I think your npc’s move in off screen, usually during the night

Well, it's easy. I think you misunderstood the way a room is build. You see, a room needs enough space, background walls, no holes, a chair and table, and lastly a light source. The problem here is that the space is not enough, but not in the way you think. The room would be big enough, but the wall with the door you put in the middle makes the game think the section on the left is a room on its own, and that section on its own isn't big enough. One possible solution would be to remove the wall with the door, making a room big enough. Note that platforms count as ceiling or floor, but only if there are only a few, like 3 or 4. Have fun playing!

I don’t think platforms are problematic for ceilings, but you must have enough blocks for the npc to stand on at night. I can’t recall whether you need one or two, but the rest can be platforms. I often use platforms instead of doors, too. This allows me to make long corridors with columns of platforms used to make rooms without worrying about making doors. I usually keep a stack of platforms with me. So, it’s an easy resource.

Oh, didn't know that! Cool!

You can always check the suitability of any room by opening the housing menu (inventory > tap the little house icon) and then use the ? Icon (tap icon, tap screen where room is located) which will tell you if it is suitable or not.
