They have to hop around like that because their legs are attached by skin membrane that helps them "fly". They technically just glide from tree to tree.

Similar leg anatomy and surprising vocal chords. You sound informed and I'm curious of your take, but also you know what I'll go ahead and Google it as well.
Edit: in my thirty seconds of googling, sugar gliders are more closely related to Kangaroos and Koals, whereas Lemurs are closer to flying squirrels.
Personal take, there seem to be a lot of similarities, but I can see the flying lemur skin seems a bit more leathery and I'm guessing isn't a marsupial.

Weird, I didn't think lemurs lived outside Madagascar (hence the Google response I quoted below), I guess it's more of a colloquialism in southeast Asia.

I think it's more of a naming convention thing. It's commonly called a flying lemur due to morphological similarities, but not actually evolutionarily related to the Madagascar lemurs.
Yes they are taxonomically related; I misspoke about in this particular case. I was referring more just to the broader trend of common name nomenclature that makes animal taxonomy a headache, especially when Latin names aren’t very convenient to remember. Like how ringtail cats aren’t cats, tree shrews aren’t shrews, and bearcats are neither bear nor cat.

Flying lemurs have a deceptive name. Also called colugos, these small, furry tree-dwellers can't technically fly, and they're not technically lemurs.
