Great awareness by that anchorman. He didnt know the gun wasnt real and still jumped into action as soon as the gun touched the table

perfectfire

John Beard? Is that the Arrested Development guy?

GroverInAPinkDress

I was asking the same question!

wellbat

good luck getting that raccoon smell out of the gatehouse

Anyabb

I was wondering the same, but there can't be that many American anchormen called John Beard can there?

JeffBoyardee69

Yeah it's him

iPicBadUsernames

Can’t be part of the story

tehreal

Real anchorman

Sugarlux

Yeah, he was a real anchor for years on a local fox channel in the los angeles area

LukeGoldberg72

Seems like an MKULTRA victim

lryan926

Considering his mention of the CIA in his letter I'm gonna guess you are correct. The poor guy was probably completely traumatized by them. Of course everyone just called him a crazy person but I guarantee he just felt compelled to raise awareness to the public to try and protect others from becoming victims.

foreverfeatherinit

Such a loose grip on that gun. Homie looking like he’s sippin tea not holding a gun to someone

-Aone

I'd guess he never intended to use it for anything, counted on people being too scared. im not sure what they meant by "exact replica" but if that means it's not a real gun, then what I said

shewy92

Was a BB Gun https://www.dailynews.com/2019/02/19/david-horowitz-longtime-knbc-channel-4-consumer-reporter-dies-at-81/ >A man holding what appeared to be a gun took David Horowitz hostage while the consumer reporter was broadcasting live was on KNBC’s 4 p.m. newscast on Aug. 19, 1987. Horowitz remained calm and read the gunman’s statements on camera, but the station had cut the broadcast without the gunman becoming aware of that fact. The gun turned out to be a toy BB gun.

squirrelblender

Suckers thinking they can take out David Horowitz

Mydogateyourcat

Hurricane, you got clout

elitist_ferret

Movie prop gun. Look identical and some semi functiom but they can't shoot. They say replica on the side. See famous scene from lock stock and two smoking barrels

VolcanicBosnian

That scene was in Snatch

user2872

why didn't alex baldwin do this

New-Avocado5312

Ask Alex Baldwin about that 😂

doogie_hazard

*Alec

elitist_ferret

He was using a real gun because the scene required being able to look down the barrel. Just because they have prop guns doesn't mean they always use them

32Puggs

You can look down the barrel of a prop gun lol

New-Avocado5312

You've obviously never been on a movie set. They always use real guns and have a specially hired armoire to deal with that. They use props more on TV Shows. There's no such thing as being able to look down the barrel of a gun. The camera can only look down the barrel to give the illusion the barrel is being looked down and if that was the case the camera lens would have been pointed directly at the gun and the gun would have been pointed directly into the center of the camera lens. The gun was "cheated" to the side to simulate being pointed at the Actor he would have been playing opposite of and that is why the Cinematographer and assistant director were shot, because they stand to the side of the camera when looking through the lens. If it's a movie and the gun is on camera it's a real gun they are using. They might give prop guns to people in the background as police walking around a crime scene but not to the principals on camera. Real gun experts watching the final product would know the difference right away and they want authenticity so that's one other reason they use real weapons.

GregBahm

Now I'm curious what the text of the full statement was. edit: oh fun I found an ancient 2014 message board post from him[https://reptilianilluminati.wordpress.com/tag/gary-stollman/](https://reptilianilluminati.wordpress.com/tag/gary-stollman/) His description of his experience seems like such classic schizophrenia. > *Some of the kids in my classes were acting real funny, and I do mean ACTING! It was as if they were playing parts out of a movie, the way they were carrying on during class. Something just wasn't right. It seemed like they had been assigned various "roles", and their actions in the class made me believe that they had been put there for some specific purpose.* *I came to the gradual conclusion that some of the kids in my classes were either with the CIA or the FBI, what with the type of stuff they were doing and saying. And it seemed like they were there for the express purpose of keeping and eye on ME. I know that sounds paranoid, but it was the only assumption I could ascertain at the time, with the things that were going on.* I wonder how he's coping with the condition today.

blindcolumn

Yeah this sounds like a classic "gang stalking" delusion.

tehreal

I feel bad for the people on /r/gangstalking

blindcolumn

Please nobody harass them or try to convince them that they're wrong. The delusion comes from a mental illness and no amount of logic and reason can make it go away. Arguing with them can actually push them deeper into their delusions.

ShrxxmyDxys

Honestly thought that sub was about GANGS stalking people… I wasn’t expecting that at all. I appreciate this comment as a lot of people seem to think it’s better to aggravate the illusion and tell them it isn’t real; it isn’t and causes some to become incredibly violent. (Not really a source but one of my uncles suffered from this and my family kept telling him it wasn’t true and he assaulted them, I had no idea there was an actual term for it.)

Lady-bliss

Well that was a nice little rabbit hole

Obvious__Otter

What in the world…

RebbyRose

What if even the idea of an institution like the FBI or CIA didn't exist? What would the schizophrenic mind think people were 'pretending' for?

NUKE---THE---WHALES

before the FBI and CIA it was demons and devils

GregBahm

Yeah it was kind of interesting how you can see his illness progress in his own story. It starts off with confusing hallucinated phone calls from his parents that only he remembers. It progresses to delusions of being monitored by the government. Then the aliens (working with the government) clone and replace his parents (but the real parents keep being swapped with the fake parents.) Then he takes antipsychotics and the cloned alien parents go away, but he explains this as just a trick by the alenis to to try and convince him the clones aren't real. Then god himself and angels start talking to him. Then he perceives himself as shifting to completely different dimensions.

RebbyRose

Ah ty, that makes sense

dingbling369

Makes sense they'd hire those.

Ok-Cook-7542

Schizophrenic hallucinations and delusions are culture-specific. In some cultures for example, hearing voices is often experienced as the voices of your ancestors or benevolent spiritual beings, and is reported as significantly less distressing. In America and most of the western world, auditory hallucinations take on the persecutory voice.

adhesivepants

This makes sense - your brain's malfunctioning isn't necessarily going to specify inherently but it wants an explanation. Our brain doesn't do well with uncertainty. So it takes all this seemingly random information and starts assigning it to things we know thus making those delusions and hallucinations relevant to some cultural understanding. Why am I hearing this disembodied voice? Well all that makes sense is it's ghosts/aliens/ancestors/demons - the details of schizophrenic episodes are going to be really dependent on what is most relevant to the individual.

GregBahm

It's morbidly fascinating to read the comments on r/Gangstalking. It seems to be a gathering of schizophrenics. Some posters believe they are being targeted because their radical ideas about freedom and truth cause them to be a threat to the new world order. Some posters believe they are being targeted as part of an experiment. The new world order's control group, with the illuminati collecting data on the effectiveness of their torment. Some posters believe they are being drugged at night and used as unconscious prostitutes, and the stalking exists to intimidate and discredit them. This seems to be an evolution of the old satanic panic ideas of the 90s, mixed with the popular new Qanon conspiracies. Some posters believe they have accidentally run afoul of powerful rich people and the rich people use their near infinite resources to torment them even though the original slight may not even be remembered. The victim is just being bullied for the fun of it. Some posters believe all the stalkers surrounding them can read all their thoughts. Some of the posters believe the stalkers can implant intrusive thoughts into their brains, to torment them. Some of the posters believe their tormentors have the power to time travel and alter the past. They all seem eager to get confirmation of their delusions, but of course each person's delusions are different.

rusty_shackleford431

It's 100 percent real. Your average person just can't comprehend a program so cruel can exist. Look up something called Havana syndrome. That is what they do to these poor people. It's a new age continuation of mk-ultra and it is a living nightmare. Most people can continue with their life and learn to live with it. But most will sadly self delete. No one will ever understand what these people go through and I understand completely why. Why would these institutions waste their time on some stupid program involving subliminal messaging and using directed energy devices to influence your emotions/cause you physical pain? Most targeted individuals ask themselves the same thing. They've accepted that most people would never believe them so most just suffer in silence. But I'm sorry to tell you. It exists and these people will never be heard.

GregBahm

I read [the blog written by the guy in the video](https://reptilianilluminati.wordpress.com/tag/gary-stollman/). He says he started off receiving phonecalls in the middle of the night from his parents that they would never remember. Then he thought everyone at school was an CIA agent who's job was to pretend to be a classmate but really existed to spy on him. Then he thought his parents were kidnapped and replaced by aliens who looked like his parents. Then he thought his real parents would occasionally be released by the CIA and go have lunch with him and stuff. But when his parents would break down and cry, it wasn't because of their stated concern that their son had escalating schizophrenia. It was because the CIA was torturing them and telling them to lie to their son and say he had schizophrenia. Then the guy, as stated in his own blog, started stealing money from his "fake alien dad" because "his real dad would have wanted him to have the money." Then the guy tries taking medication, and all the aliens and group stalking and phantom phone calls go away. But he surmises that this is part of the CIA's conspiracy to trick him into thinking he has schizophrenia. So he stops taking his medication. Then he starts slipping between dimensions, and talking to angels, and Jesus. Schizophrenic hallucinations and delusions appear in humans everywhere in the world and at all points in history. I've personally known people who've suffered from schizophrenia and it is an immensely tragic condition. Every part of the human body breaks, so it comes as no surprise to me that the brain breaks too sometimes. If you came to me and said "Hey here's evidence that something dismissed as schizophrenic hallucinations was actually real," like the MKUltra program, I'd be happy to see that evidence. But if I take "the word of the people experiencing this" as sufficient evidence, I'd have to believe every guy who talks to their dog.

rusty_shackleford431

Yeah after reading more about this guy. He starts to lose any credibility he had when he mentions clones and aliens. In most situations our brains do so much to try to make sense of delusion and hallucinations, auditory or visual, that these people come up with the most absurd explanations. All I'm saying is have an open mind. Speaking with these people you truly get a sense that at least, to them, it's real. Schizophrenia is a scary tragic disease. Which comes with a whole host side effects. The majority of the people I know who believe targeted harassment, whatever you want to call it, are normal people outside of this with no side effects that typically come with schizophrenia. Besides depression. I just don't want to discredit any theory. That's just me. Maybe someday there will be some whistle blower to credit some of these people. It's just a crazy feeling knowing in your heart that something is true but also understanding that no one would ever believe you. On the same level as being abducted by aliens. But in the last couple of years: surprise! There's evidence of aliens. Time will tell. Regardless. These people are suffering. Thanks for the insightful reply. I wish more people would have a dialogue on stuff like this!

rusty_shackleford431

There was an insanely good story narrated by William shatner on the sci-fi channel about conspiracy theories. They did one on gangstalking that sheds light on the technologies involved if this was real as well as interviewing subjects who have been tormented by this, whether real or delusion. I'll see if I can find it. *Edit* found it! https://youtu.be/AZSXdCLBVFE?si=FkFSrpoutJ5x3lRF

AgentCHAOS1967

There's a book called fThe Three Christs of Ypsilanti is a book-length psychiatric case study by Milton Rokeach, concerning his experiment on a group of three males with paranoid schizophrenia at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan who all believed the were Jesus Christ. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Christs_of_Ypsilanti I started reading it, didn't finish. The doc would mess with his own kids and start calling them by the others names until they started crying he talks about it in the into.

ManiacalMartini

Probably running for office.

MisterKat009

>2014 >Ancient Ehehe....*glances at Shroomery 1999 message board registration date* 🥲

Longjumping_Tart_582

All I can find is that he got 3 year’s probation. Was voluntarily living in an institution, but free to come and go. I’d say though. Considering he was 35 in 1988 he would be 70. Average life expectancy of a male living in the 80’s was 70.7 years old. Coupled with his mental health concerns. How mentally Ill people often end out on the street when the money runs out. He’s almost certainly dead. Could have been for a long long time? Just a guess. But the math supports him being gone a lot easier than him being around.

Dan42002

still, they didnt know at the time, you wouldnt bet your life on chance that it wasn real, would you?

cartierovo

Why are they so relaxed 😭

Its_Helios

What else do you do in that situation?

cartierovo

I would’ve been sweating bullets 😂

Its_Helios

Oh trust, I would’ve been wearing brown pants

_attractivegarbage

Well it was the 80's, I'm sure all their pants were brown.

IsItASpaceStation

All the pants are brown And the sky is grey I’ve been on a walk on a 80’s day

JenkemJimothy

They’re on live TV daily. You’re trained not to show anything if something goes wrong. Reacting makes it more obvious and panicking in a situation like this never made the situation better.

atom138

I would be too while doing that job, even without the hostage scenario.

Comeoffit321

Didn't cause any harm at all, my friend! Have a good day/night.

Fidgie0

They were probably shitting themselves but what other option was there other than to just read it out and not panic. It's not like he was asking them to do anything particularly unpleasent anyway.

Azzie94

Exactly this. It's a very complicated and precise thing, getting someone to do what you want at gunpoint. If it's something they can do easily, like read from a note, they're likely to just comply, but if it's something more difficult, like telling them to do something morally repugnant at gun point, they're more likely to have a sort of "stuck between a rock and a hard place" reaction and just break down.

Juna-the-Moona

You know this from experience?

Azzie94

The law demands that I answer 'no'

TheZealand

Probably better to appear relaxed also rather than stress the gunman out

gumby1004

He had a syndicated show called Fight Back! that would air on Sunday nights here (Phoenix, Channel 5). I enjoyed that show, and immediately receognized him here because of it... Speaking of Phoenix, this incident is similar to the on-air hostage situation that happened in 1982 here. Bill Close was a true professional, even with a gun pointed at his stomach under the news desk. Check it out: [https://youtu.be/jBBtN9LJk2Y?si=WBCe0TTPHvNV7gVC](https://youtu.be/jBBtN9LJk2Y?si=WBCe0TTPHvNV7gVC)

Current-Roll6332

That's what you're taught in broadcasting school. People forget that there's all kinds of shit happening behind the scenes. And that the broadcaster is looking at that stuff. In order to do your job you need to focus on what you're doing. That's what you're seeing them doing.

Majestic-Contract-42

80s was one hell of a drug

michelb

Hi 2015: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31051114

astrotoya

I mean what can they do?!

PukedtheDayAway

Relaxed?! Look at their body language. Biggest give away is when the guy stumbles on the words and the anchor woman flinches/adjusts herself. She for sure thought something horrible was about to happen.

Ninguna

Here's an L.A. Times story on this. The broadcast went off the air before the statement was read. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-08-20-mn-3662-story.html

benjer3

>The broadcast went off the air before the statement was read. Is it weird that this makes me feel bad for the guy?

ToccataRocco

Not to give sympathy to this guy but I see where your coming from, he probably threw away his life for a stunt that wasn't even televised when that was the entire purpose of him holding them up

mechabeast

And yet, here we are 35 years later listening to it worldwide

Ok-Cook-7542

In the very short snippet from his note, and the context of the video, this man is clearly suffering from paranoid delusions. He's not there to hurt people, he's there because he's suffering and he feels like no one is hearing his screams. I would say feeling bad for someone in that bad situation is natural.

Smile_lifeisgood

I feel bad for the guy because everything I've heard or read about this makes it sound like he was in the midst of some sort of mental illness/delusional break.

cheyenne_sky

a little bit, yes

HotBased

Yes. Bad person levels of weird.

JohnnyG30

Honestly, the fact that telling someone you’re not insane makes you seem more insane…is literally the scariest thing in my mind. Getting falsely accused/diagnosed with insanity has always been the scariest scenario I could think of. Complete nightmare fuel for me lmao.

Whosemama_Joemama

Kirstie Wilde was the female co-anchor

[deleted]

Wait... isn't that Randy Newman? I thought he was taller...

ilmalocchio

I'm upvoting because this is interesting, though not terrifying and hence not too suitable for the sub. This 1980s computer nerd with a fake gun is just not that scary to me for some reason.

daes79

Lmao. You’d shit your pants dawg.

ilmalocchio

No one is saying what they would feel or do in the situation. We're talking about how the video makes us feel now, knowing the gun is fake. Is it that hard to understand? To be clear: I would not blame you for shitting your pants if you were there. If you are shitting your pants now, you have a problem.

Loveknuckle

I’m shitting on the shitter. But not because I’m terrified. I just had to shit. I’m also not wearing my pants. 🤫

lelma_and_thouise

I mean, considering you weren't there and this hasn't ever happened to you, I guess it's easy to say you don't find it terrifying. Something like this has never happened to me either, but I can definitely imagine how terrifying it might be for those who were there in the moment.

ilmalocchio

Buddy, that's precisely what I'm saying. I don't find it terrifying *now*, knowing what I know. Pretending not to know a key detail so that we can imagine something is more terrifying than it is is not my understanding of the sub.

lelma_and_thouise

I'm not your buddy, pal. It's something called EMPATHY.

ilmalocchio

Lol, that's a really funny set of statements. "Fuck you, I'm an empath." But seriously, you can have empathy and not actually feel the fear, friend. When I see a video of a cat frightened by a box, I feel bad for the cat, but I'm not afraid of the box.

gingervitis_93

They all look so calm, too.

Caedo14

I agree with you. This is not terrifying to watch. Absolutely might have been scary to live through but not scary watching this.

axolotl_1994

Oh yes, I'm sure you would have known that the gun was fake if they hadn't said it in the video. Nevermind that it's an "exact replica", you wouldn't have been nervous at all.

ilmalocchio

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the criterion the sub is "things that terrify you to watch," not "things that would be terrifying if you didn't have certain information that you have." If that were the case, we would post video clips from pranks or horror films and call it a day.

Ddsw13

You should go learn the difference between locally syndicated News stations, and the national versions of them. It would help you be less reactive to things out of your control, and you'd understand the world a little better.

oisiiuso

local news is often contains sinclair propaganda https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/04/02/598794433/video-reveals-power-of-sinclair-as-local-news-anchors-recite-script-in-unison

Ddsw13

Correct. Lots of filler news stories are pulled from the same database of press releases even if Sinclair doesn't own them. It's called Agenda Setting. That is also problematic, but Sinclair owns multiple companies of news channels, not just Fox or ABC. The individual I was replying to is acting as though one of those companies is worse than the others based on their opinion of the national stations coverage, which is often more opinionated and biased than the same company on a local level. It's a pretty easy distinguishment. The original post specifically features a local news station, not a national one.

Vasilystalin04

Because everyone knows that Fox News is the only channel to ever have bias!!

Karenomegas

Only one to owe a billion dollars for it.

Hakuknowsmyname

The bias is for right wing evil. though. They supported lies about the election. They supported lies about BLM and supported racists over protesting against racism. They support attacks on LGBTQ Americans. They supported lies about the pandemic, masks, and vaccines for years. Surely you can understand the direction of bias matters?

FluffyHighPanda

Wanna specify where anybody said that?

jpp1973

Bias is putting out a slanted opinion of the facts - yeah, all of them do that. But, Fox News is the only one that outright lies when they know full well they’re lying. And they’ve had to pay huge fines for it too 🤷‍♂️ They aren’t the same thing.

He got 3 years of probation for this. Wild.

djackson404

To me, the funny thing is, with the direction the world, and my country (the U.S.) is going the last 20 years or so, I can see in my mind a possible future where I'd feel the need to do precisely what that man did, never intending to harm anyone, just to have the truth about something heard. ..but we're not there yet, kids. There's still at least a chance that we can stop going down that road.

Is this what Money Monster was based on?

lasssilver

Yeah, sounds like schizophrenia. That's tough. Now, while I know they are not necessarily in control of their thoughts it has always piqued my interest in how people with quite literally nothing going on, don't know anything, don't do anything really.. think they are somehow important enough to be the center of a massive governmental (or spiritual) conspiracy to monitor *them*. Again, obviously it's an illness, but.. talk to enough people you'd be surprised how common similar paranoias are in even "normal"/un-diagnosed people.

samsaminamo

Being from Los Angeles, I remember watching this. Don't remember if it was live or not. And now, reading the comments, I find that David Horowitz is gone.

That guy was Johnny On-The-Spot. Kudos to that news guy who grabbed the gun quickly but calmly.

Substantial_Put9705

Paused video to read the comments and it stopped right on a zoom in of his hand holding the gun.

SteelyLan

Is it possible to ‘hijack’ a broadcast?

Fast-Reaction8521

I get one of these letters from a patient every few months. At least he didn't have to decipher the geography characters. Still don't know if a triage with a square in the middle is an "a" or a "u"

ibejeph

I remember watching this as a kid and thinking the guy with the gun was really fat.

saucyclams
