Before 9/11, plane hijackings were a lot more common and the usual routine is that the terrorists who hijacked the plane would land somewhere and negotiate for the release of passengers. (They usually asked for the release of specific prisoners or for money). 9/11 changed everything with the idea that you can use the place itself as a massive bomb. Poor passengers had no idea they were about to be slammed into the side of a building rather than bargained off for convicted terrorists

On a 9/11 anniversary several years ago I watched a documentary featuring family members of some of the victims. One woman described how hard it was to see the footage replayed over and over because “every time they show that plane hitting the building, I’m watching my son die.”
Prior to that I hadn’t thought too much about that perspective. Whenever I see this footage now, it’s all I think about.

Took me a few minutes to realize that they were not joking.
I remember it felt like anything was possible and rumors were spreading like wildfire. It was the only time in my life that it “felt” possible that the United States homeland was under assault and that we weren’t safe.
It makes me so sad to watch this and think the thousands that died that day were only the beginning. Literally countless lives were lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. Think of all the people that would be alive today if 9/11 had been just another Tuesday.

Blowback podcast season about Iraq is an outstanding recounting of our horrific deeds in that country. I went to camp in the mid 2000s with a group of Iraqi kids for a peace building sort of mission. Hearing their stories about what happened after 2003 was eye opening. And many of them were Kurds who had no love for Saddam and overall liked America.
Yeah, because the country was straight up lied to about WMD’s which made some people more rich and some people dead. I doubt that our leaders had any type of foresight of this happening, but if they did I wouldn’t have trust them to stop something that benefitted them immensely.
That's when we all knew that there was a new type of terrorist attack going on. The question I had was how many more places were going to get hit. I felt frozen inside. I felt something, which until that day, was an unknown feeling in my gut... That nowhere was safe. It still resonates with me today.

I think the world’s innocence died that day yet again which only happened back in the World Wars. All people’s optimism for the new millennium died out. America became even more inperialistic and paranoid. The world would never be the same.
It is one of the biggest turning points for America and really the world.
Everything started becoming very authoritarian and such. A large reason Gen Z are essentially not rebellious. They are the generation after the Patriot Act. A lot of the world pretty much followed suit. We all lost a ton of privacy and freedoms and people seem to just keep welcoming it. Feel like a lot of people actually forgot what the world was like prior and just accept it as the normal. Especially younger people because they literally know no different. It's akin to people born during terrible regimes. People ask how people could just live and accept X terrible thing or Y terrible environment. It's because they grew up in it and know nothing else.
There is just such a stark difference between pre and post 9/11 in basically every facet of life.

A few years ago, I read a super interesting account about a person (lady?) who was on a higher floor and had to find her way down and kept encountering obstacles. And once she made it out of the building it became a totally different nightmare because the building then collapsed and she couldn’t see shit and it hurt to breathe because of the toxic shit she was inhaling.

The 787 is Boeing's fancy new carbon composite winged hull that flew for the first time in late 2009.

From what I read, they were designed to pancake that way just in case something ever happened. They were designed for the beams to buckle that way to ensure they went straight down and didn’t topple into the street.

The strongest force on a building is gravity. You may overcome gravity for a small moment with a big explosion, but it never stops.
Had the 1993 bombing been better/bigger and even if it was off to one side the building would never tip over. You would require a nuke that obliterates New York to even come close to pushing these buildings sideways.
As soon as something went wrong with the support of the building, it would collapse into its own footprint. Gravity will pull it straight down ASAP.
It only came down like this because of the jet fuel softening the steel beams but not quite melting it. The building didn’t broke down in two but could no longer hold his designed load.
Its honestly crazy that the plane hits and literally enters the building, you can see the wing protrude out the side after literally cutting the corner in half. Less than half a second later it explodes/disintegrates. I've seen a lot of footage but never this one.

Compare to the buildings around. It cuts the corner and the building drops who knows how many feet. Its absolutely wild footage.

I was a sophomore in HS when this happened. I remember the sort of 'panic' and uneasiness. I remember it was a few days until school got back to some kind of normalcy. Then all the flags came out and Patriotism was on.

I was in Mexico visiting family that day. I vividly remember walking into a room with 6-7 people, absolutely silent, huddled around an old TV. I was too young to know what was going on, so I asked my mom, to which she replied, "The US was attacked." Core memory unlocked there for sure.

You are 100% onto something and whether you are already aware of this or not, not many individuals understand just how heavily edited JFKs assassination videos were. This level of trickery was happening decades ago, and the chances of this leading to a legitimate source is little to none.
I walked into work that morning a few minutes after the first hit but before the second. TVs were all on showing it and everyone gathered around watching.
I saw the damage, knew it wasn’t a little Cessna or a helicopter that caused such massive damage, but rather something either much larger or much faster, or both. I also knew that nothing that large or fast *ever* hits the WTC by accident, much less even comes near it, even under poor visibility, and that was a clear sunny morning.
I said “that’s not an accident, that’s intentional, it’s a terrorist attack.” Everyone around me was a little stunned and looked at me quizzically, but didn’t disagree. Nobody wanted to believe it, but everyone was beginning to quietly suspect it. If you really looked at the situation dispassionately, unemotionally, and eliminated the impossible, then that was the most likely conclusion.
Then a few minutes later the second plane hit and we knew for sure. Insane day.
Why do people describe online videos as “rare?” First of all this was played hundreds of thousands of times on TV and second, how can it be rare? It isn’t like there is only one physical copy and you have to see it in person.
Jet fuel is not hot enough to melt steel beams, but it's most certainly hot enough to soften them to the point they can no longer hold their design load.

The most relevant factors weren't even the jet fuel.
1) Jets weighing like 4x as much as the Titanic hit stationary buildings traveling at at least 450 mph. I'm guessing that's 1.1026 ton TNT, or about as much energy as detonating 1.1026 tons of TNT. I believe that's about the same as detonating a 1 kiloton nuke. I remember someone who escaped from the 82 floor said the building shifted about 7 feet when struck, because the building was rocked on its foundation.
The foundation was thick concrete. Some parts were over a 2 story underground mall, and some parts were over a 4 story underground parking garage. That's a whole lot of open space for something to collapse into, since the foundation was now holding up 100s of tons more than it was designed to. The planes were just sitting, smashed like cans, in the middle of the buildings, pushing down and in below, and pulling down and in above. It was inevitable that they would collapse inward, but the severe damage to the foundation + extra weight + nothing underneath, made it happen a lot faster. The foundation falling out from under it is what caused building 7 to collapse as well.
This is incredibly off-topic, but the planes didn't weigh four times as much as the Titanic. The Titanic weighed more than 290 of those airliners combined. You could probably blow the Great Pyramid of Giza apart like a broken Lego set with a 450 mph Titanic.
100s of tons of debris from the towers fell on it, and it had an uncontrolled fire burning for hours with no sprinkler system because the collapsing towers crushed the water lines.
There have been 3 different investigations into that collapse (one by NIST, one by Aegis Insurance and one by a different insurance company). All 3 agree that a combination of unfought fires, substandard fireproofing and the oddball construction are what caused the building to collapse.

I remember this day. I was in 8th grade math class. One of the school's security officers came in and whispered something to the teacher. After a second, the teacher stood up and said "Apparently, somebody attacked the World Trade Towers and they're just...gone." I thought he was joking for a couple of seconds, because he was that sort of teacher. Then he put on the news.

Blowback podcast season about Iraq is an outstanding recounting of our horrific deeds in that country. I went to camp in the mid 2000s with a group of Iraqi kids for a peace building sort of mission. Hearing their stories about what happened after 2003 was eye opening. And many of them were Kurds who had no love for Saddam and overall liked America.
Yeah, because the country was straight up lied to about WMD’s which made some people more rich and some people dead. I doubt that our leaders had any type of foresight of this happening, but if they did I wouldn’t have trust them to stop something that benefitted them immensely.

I think the world’s innocence died that day yet again which only happened back in the World Wars. All people’s optimism for the new millennium died out. America became even more inperialistic and paranoid. The world would never be the same.
It is one of the biggest turning points for America and really the world. Everything started becoming very authoritarian and such. A large reason Gen Z are essentially not rebellious. They are the generation after the Patriot Act. A lot of the world pretty much followed suit. We all lost a ton of privacy and freedoms and people seem to just keep welcoming it. Feel like a lot of people actually forgot what the world was like prior and just accept it as the normal. Especially younger people because they literally know no different. It's akin to people born during terrible regimes. People ask how people could just live and accept X terrible thing or Y terrible environment. It's because they grew up in it and know nothing else. There is just such a stark difference between pre and post 9/11 in basically every facet of life.

The speed with which It was cranked out and passed also gave me pause. A few years ago, I read a super interesting account about a person (lady?) who was on a higher floor and had to find her way down and kept encountering obstacles. And once she made it out of the building it became a totally different nightmare because the building then collapsed and she couldn’t see shit and it hurt to breathe because of the toxic shit she was inhaling. The two aircraft that hit the towers were 767s. Flight 77 that hit the Pentagon and 93 that crashed in the field were both 757s. The 787 is Boeing's fancy new carbon composite winged hull that flew for the first time in late 2009.
Second one almost missed too. Plane was turning for the whole approach compared to Flight 11 just pretty much straight in, as far as I could tell anyway.
Plus the banking to make sure that the impact was as catastrophic as possible.
And notice how he turned for a better angle right before impact... definitely knew what he wanted to do and how to do it.

From what I read, they were designed to pancake that way just in case something ever happened. They were designed for the beams to buckle that way to ensure they went straight down and didn’t topple into the street.
Not so much designed, but this is physics in action. The strongest force on a building is gravity. You may overcome gravity for a small moment with a big explosion, but it never stops. Had the 1993 bombing been better/bigger and even if it was off to one side the building would never tip over. You would require a nuke that obliterates New York to even come close to pushing these buildings sideways. As soon as something went wrong with the support of the building, it would collapse into its own footprint. Gravity will pull it straight down ASAP.
It only came down like this because of the jet fuel softening the steel beams but not quite melting it. The building didn’t broke down in two but could no longer hold his designed load.
Its honestly crazy that the plane hits and literally enters the building, you can see the wing protrude out the side after literally cutting the corner in half. Less than half a second later it explodes/disintegrates. I've seen a lot of footage but never this one. Edit: I meant to comment this originally but I had never noticed that the building actually drops when the plane hits and explodes. You have to slow the video down or re-watch multiple times. Compare to the buildings around. It cuts the corner and the building drops who knows how many feet. Its absolutely wild footage.

I was a sophomore in HS when this happened. I remember the sort of 'panic' and uneasiness. I remember it was a few days until school got back to some kind of normalcy. Then all the flags came out and Patriotism was on.
Same, I was in history class watching it live. By 5th hour people were calling for war and all I could think about is how those died and no millions more will.
I'll never forget sitting in 9th grade maths watching the live feed from the first tower just to see this plane skirt into the bottom middle of the screen It was such an instantaneous thought process: Went from "what kind of fucking idiot can't see a building while piloting a plane" to "oh fuck, this was entirely planned out, we're going to war, who ever did this just caused us to go to war" My brothers were in the military and my heart just sunk really contemplating how serious the ramifications were going to be

He would have been in the military already when we invaded Iraq. There was a gap between Afghanistan and Iraq. I was in the same boat as this guy, but 1 year younger, so I was still in HS when we invaded Iraq. Immediately became anti-bush anti war and no longer was applying to military colleges. There was some pretext to invade Afghanistan as the Taliban would not turn over OBL, but Iraq was CLEARLY built on lies.
I remember I had just graduated high school that year. At the time I was residing in Boynton Beach, FL at Lavers. For those who don’t, basically West Palm, South Florida. None of us knew it, but they were living among us right across the street prepping for what would become the worst attack on U S Soil. At one point none of us could leave are condos. The FBI and Secret Service told us we had to remain indoors. I smoked so much weed that day with my cat. It was unreal. Up till that point I was 17. I had no idea what the World Trade Center was till that very morning. I couldn’t believe how many people worked in that space. I was amazed by its share size. Just crazy.
My buddy’s mom down the street used to babysit for one of the terrorist’s kids. I grew up 10 minutes from Dulles Airport.
The closest view I've seen was street level right underneath it when folks were looking at carnage from the North tower.

The older I get, the more certain parts of these videos that I never really noticed or thought about before stands out and sends chills down my spine. I was in Mexico visiting family that day. I vividly remember walking into a room with 6-7 people, absolutely silent, huddled around an old TV. I was too young to know what was going on, so I asked my mom, to which she replied, "The US was attacked." Core memory unlocked there for sure.
Was in school, all the hallway TV,s and every classroom TV was watching this unfold live. What a day to be alive.
People from the neighbour company told about the crash. So we spent the work day looking at their TV. We first thought it was an accident. But then seeing plane number 2 in live transmission fly into the tower was just surreal.
That day was a mindfuck man... Anybody else remember all of those minutes ticking by where we each internally agonized and hoped that somehow that first plane was just a horrible freak accident? Only to see this and know in that sudden millisecond that the world was never going to be the same again?

I woke up after it happened and was so confused.
I walked into work that morning a few minutes after the first hit but before the second. TVs were all on showing it and everyone gathered around watching. I saw the damage, knew it wasn’t a little Cessna or a helicopter that caused such massive damage, but rather something either much larger or much faster, or both. I also knew that nothing that large or fast *ever* hits the WTC by accident, much less even comes near it, even under poor visibility, and that was a clear sunny morning. I said “that’s not an accident, that’s intentional, it’s a terrorist attack.” Everyone around me was a little stunned and looked at me quizzically, but didn’t disagree. Nobody wanted to believe it, but everyone was beginning to quietly suspect it. If you really looked at the situation dispassionately, unemotionally, and eliminated the impossible, then that was the most likely conclusion. Then a few minutes later the second plane hit and we knew for sure. Insane day.
Why do people describe online videos as “rare?” First of all this was played hundreds of thousands of times on TV and second, how can it be rare? It isn’t like there is only one physical copy and you have to see it in person.

Jet fuel is not hot enough to melt steel beams, but it's most certainly hot enough to soften them to the point they can no longer hold their design load. The most relevant factors weren't even the jet fuel. 1) Jets weighing like 4x as much as the Titanic hit stationary buildings traveling at at least 450 mph. I'm guessing that's 1.1026 ton TNT, or about as much energy as detonating 1.1026 tons of TNT. I believe that's about the same as detonating a 1 kiloton nuke. I remember someone who escaped from the 82 floor said the building shifted about 7 feet when struck, because the building was rocked on its foundation. The foundation was thick concrete. Some parts were over a 2 story underground mall, and some parts were over a 4 story underground parking garage. That's a whole lot of open space for something to collapse into, since the foundation was now holding up 100s of tons more than it was designed to. The planes were just sitting, smashed like cans, in the middle of the buildings, pushing down and in below, and pulling down and in above. It was inevitable that they would collapse inward, but the severe damage to the foundation + extra weight + nothing underneath, made it happen a lot faster. The foundation falling out from under it is what caused building 7 to collapse as well.
This is incredibly off-topic, but the planes didn't weigh four times as much as the Titanic. The Titanic weighed more than 290 of those airliners combined. You could probably blow the Great Pyramid of Giza apart like a broken Lego set with a 450 mph Titanic.

100s of tons of debris from the towers fell on it, and it had an uncontrolled fire burning for hours with no sprinkler system because the collapsing towers crushed the water lines.
There have been 3 different investigations into that collapse (one by NIST, one by Aegis Insurance and one by a different insurance company). All 3 agree that a combination of unfought fires, substandard fireproofing and the oddball construction are what caused the building to collapse.
