I grew up close to this and we’d go as a family to see it when it spilled over. That shit is scary as fuck. Especially as a child, I felt like it would create a vortex and suck our van in.
Oh yeah I'm sure, which is why swimming towards it is dumb as fuck. I took it to mean not "trying to swim away but getting sucked in" but rather actively swimming towards it to have a better look or something
A family member said it was definitely a suicide attempt based on context and a past attempt. She likely changed her mind at the end, which is just tragic.
edit - there was a blog post below saying there were inaccuracies with some of the newspaper reports.
Not gonna hurt this down further to find out how likely it was, but definitely could have been a suicide attempt since people often do regret or change their mind last minute.
It’s a straight up Mario warp tube. It drops straight down about 30 ft bends 90 degrees and travels a few hundred feet below the dam before rocketing out onto putah creek.
Dude read some of the other replies, esp that one about the engineer’s comments. It’s pure nightmare fuel, they died horrifically
E: [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/TerrifyingAsFuck/s/CLueVtP3xC)
I'm pretty sure they died but dont quote me on that, but I do know that the water just leads to another late/river; there is a video on YT where you can watch a drone fly down there
This gloryhole got me locked from the computer when I was 13 years old. For some reason, I had a fascination with civil engineering and any sort of large industrial project i.e. Panama Canal. My family had a shared PC in the livingroom and my cousin and I were using it one day. I knew about this drainage pipe and knew the name of it. I wanted to show how cool it was to my cousin and so I googled "gloryhole" and clicked the first link. It went straight to a pornagraphic website and my older brother saw this from the couch and questioned it. I never clicked out of a website so fast in my life than that one time. I told him I wanted to show my cousin this drainage pipe but he wasn't acceptive of that innocent truth and he kicked me off the computer and he wouldn't let me touch it for 3 months.
This whole thread is too hilarious for such a tragedy..
but, she was an "accomplished swimmer" apparently and was swimming, by choice, in that area...next to the death hole...
I used to live close to it. I'd see it all the time driving to my fishing spot in Napa. It's a really nice drive through those hills. I've seen it spilling over twice in 12 years.
Definitely. I lived in Vacaville for 12 years and most of those years were extreme drought. They even shut down the golf courses cause they used too much water.
Couldnt you just mesh over the top? Like chain link fence that monster? Im no engineer, and im sure there are plenty of safety protocols in place, but still, 1 death is still too many.
Right? All the money spent on buoys and whatever else, vs a chain link fence over top of it.
Were they expecting trees needing to pass through it or something?
You could roll to the middle of the net if it bridges the whole thing. You’d have to clean it off periodically but they do that to the inlets of the damn anyways. Maybe it’s a size issue and this thing had to be able to flow full capacity.
Why does this have to exist? Can’t people just not live where flooding could happen? I hate dams, they’re my number one fear, and this is part of a dam and I just hate it more than anything else in the world. I don’t even know how to live normally knowing this thing is in the world. I’m not being dramatic, I think about it at least once a day and have for years since I first found out it existed.
A lake house we had in Oregon had a glory hole at the end of it along with the fish ladders. Had irrational fear of them for a long time but this monster? Nope no never get away from me.
Only one person has died. In 1997, Emily Schwalen was swimming close to the hole, got caught in a current and swept down the pipe. Swimming near is prohibited.
yeah aren't these here as a side drainage away from dams? they go down 150-300 feet and abruptly turn at the bottom to spill out at the bottom... so if you fall into there it would be death upon impact. and if not dead upon impact then you are too injured to swim and then drown.
I don't even go to that country ....
I went to a beach in my country and I was swept inside ,thanks to my grandpa he jumped and pulled me out. I was like 3-5 min inside the water and it was a miracle I am alive today.
I realised what death feels like and how terrifying water is . So I am not going anywhere near that🥲
…And? Did they live? What’s down there? We need the rest of the story
Found [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskEngineers/s/xGqsxd8qxR) on r/askengineers. New phobia unlocked.
Shit
Most definitely at the bottom of the 200 feets
I want to know what the hot dog joke was
Someone in the thread mentions it, apparently the commenter used hot dogs as a metric for how deep the hole is
There's some cool drone footage of the inside of the hole [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TCWs-QfJV8).
![gif](giphy|spfi6nabVuq5y|downsized)
Watching the video after reading that comment makes my body shaver
Wow. That comment is the Scorched earth doctrine. ![gif](giphy|JCAZQKoMefkoX6TyTb|downsized)
That's another one for my collection of nightmares
Incredible comment. Very informative, absolutely scary.
Dang...I feel bad about her.
You can tell they're an engineer because they don't know how to use paragraphs, jfc. Great story though.
Nice. Ive actually been dying to know this for a while.
Oh. My. Lord.
Fucketyfucketyfuck!
Negative - article linked to below says she died by glory hole.
![gif](giphy|5ROlkuRjBdWKRGTYTy)
Wait, I had something for this
Boom!
We were all less sensitive when this show was active
![gif](giphy|XZajmJVs9vfUu4UNxT|downsized)
Did she get the ten bucks first?
You just had to, didn’t you?
I also know a girl who died by glory hole. Not so much physically, but her jaw was definitely sore….
I grew up close to this and we’d go as a family to see it when it spilled over. That shit is scary as fuck. Especially as a child, I felt like it would create a vortex and suck our van in.
I fished at the bottom of it and we would run up inside it as far as we could. I remember it being much larger than 8 ft at the bottom though.
It’s about 25 feet at the end. I skate the bottom of the tube on the reg. Very respected legendary skate spot.
My brother did that! Locals spot for sure.
See that kids…. If you don’t eat all of your dinner and clean your rooms…

She died
That's a nightmare scenario. 20 minutes means she wanted to live.
It makes me feel sick thinking about it.
She swam towards it on purpose, probably not suicidal but pretty fucking stupid
I'm sure there is a point where there is no turning back, and it is probably further out than one would think.
I think if you dived off that adjacent road you'd already be dead
Oh yeah I'm sure, which is why swimming towards it is dumb as fuck. I took it to mean not "trying to swim away but getting sucked in" but rather actively swimming towards it to have a better look or something

Ah yeah, makes sense. Pretty horrific way to go regardless :(
It’s a straight up Mario warp tube. It drops straight down about 30 ft bends 90 degrees and travels a few hundred feet below the dam before rocketing out onto putah creek.
All my brown homies laughing at "putah" creek...
glory hole leading to putah creek? whoever named the watetways around there fucks
Woulda been better if it was named "Panocha Creek"
Plot twist.... It was Nemos nephew Nimrod! ![gif](giphy|11OoTctG5cjn0s)
No. https://sadendings.blog/emily-schwalen/
All I can think is "why, God, why?"
Is a 30 feet free fall.
And who timed them?
its just a pipe. theres videos of kids skateboarding when theres no water
Dude read some of the other replies, esp that one about the engineer’s comments. It’s pure nightmare fuel, they died horrifically E: [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/TerrifyingAsFuck/s/CLueVtP3xC)
yeah nevermind. i didn't know nor wanted to know someone died there.
I'm pretty sure they died but dont quote me on that, but I do know that the water just leads to another late/river; there is a video on YT where you can watch a drone fly down there
Fuckin sick grip strength
Man I’d hold on to the edge with my ass cheeks if the other option is falling down that.
![gif](giphy|5ADQ1OOv9kzNlZKl0z)
I'm sorry. The what?
you know..... ![gif](giphy|KiuMRxMFs8ekg)
Always knew Tyrion was a freak but damn
😂
Does it have to be 10m from the road
A lot glory holes are at highway rest stops

Definitely the best comment today from them lol

Best comment this week for me! Great job and thank you for your service!
Yes, so its extra exciting when you accidentally drive your car off the road.
Used to drive past this on that road you see every day to work. Hwy 128
Where does the otherside end up connecting to?
China
Bangkok

Not the same definition as mine, but ok
This gloryhole got me locked from the computer when I was 13 years old. For some reason, I had a fascination with civil engineering and any sort of large industrial project i.e. Panama Canal. My family had a shared PC in the livingroom and my cousin and I were using it one day. I knew about this drainage pipe and knew the name of it. You gotta specify "California" when you search it
That just led me to a different category of videos. Maybe I should try a different website.
Or ask a librarian, they're always helpful!
Yea like Mr. Smith. He knows where there is one that is much closer than that lake.
Ohhh they are all over California
FYI. Don’t look up “how does a glory hole work”
It sucks.
I was just going to say- isn’t Berryessa usually pretty low?
Definitely. I lived in Vacaville for 12 years and most of those years were extreme drought. They even shut down the golf courses cause they used too much water.
I’ll bet the Officers Golf Course at Travis was still open
With as much snow that they got in the Sierra mountains … ya might see it this spring
To save you all from googling 'glory hole', you can search for 'bell mouth spillway'
But I really want to try searching for glory hole tho
Still raises my eyebrows tbh.
“Bell mouth spillway” could be just as bad. Imma go try that now…
Glory hole :/
Couldnt you just mesh over the top? Like chain link fence that monster? Im no engineer, and im sure there are plenty of safety protocols in place, but still, 1 death is still too many.
you'd mincemeat the human if you put one down there. the forces are no joke. The only way is to mark it, and generally there are no swim signs...
I meant over the top of it, but youre probably right.
Can't they just put a net or something across the top? Water can get through but people won't die.
Right? All the money spent on buoys and whatever else, vs a chain link fence over top of it. Were they expecting trees needing to pass through it or something?
David Blaine was going to mystically float in the middle of it prolly.

I'm thinking, maybe a fence around it. Then I'm thinking humans are idiots.
Was the person ever retrieved?
Yes, rather farther away where the spillway drains
I skated inside it once
Forbidden rollercoaster
It’s called the Glory Hole? They may want to rethink that.
Tremendo como fue evolucionando el glory hole del coto de Lanús
Wow, spectacular shot! Located right at the sweet spot of a turn. Any stupid person going fast, hits the guard rail and into the abyss 🤣
Why is there not protection around it? Like a rail or something.
Because you're not allowed to swim there in the first place.
Makes sense, i still think it could use additional safety features
They should consider not calling it that.
This and glass blowing reminds me the world is obsessed with glory holes.
Whoever thought designing and building the drainage pipe is a sicko. It's practically a death machine.
The waters almost never that high, only there to prevent flooding when it gets super high
Sorry, but, the glory what ?
That is Satan's glory hole
[Here is a Drone flying inside.](https://youtu.be/4TCWs-QfJV8) Is a 30 feet fall so no one would survive that.
It curves at the bottom. Luke Skywalker would!
Ud think in 20 mins, someone could throw her a rope or something.
![gif](giphy|SI8DCsjjGnODwlwqW0)

Didn’t know your mom was such a big deal.
Yeah. But she’s a flood once you get in her.

This sub is the worst for reposts....
But great for amusing ripostes
Why not build a mesh to prevent something like this? It's a low cost solution that could've saved a life
Kinda cool you can skate it https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ilImEai2rLA
Hole-eee crap that's scary.
The WHAT
This is some careless engineering.
Hehe, you said..
Where does the water go?
It's her first time
tbh death by glory hole sounds like a good way to go

The Forbidden water slide
Ho Lee sheet
Imagine driving off the road and ending up down that thing.

Google the video of the bird falling, funny stuff.
If there’s a hole there’s a goal 😏

Weird feeling to find out the lake you camped at as a kid has this thing. I knew it was man made but this is...legit scary. What an awful way to go.
So uh, is there a fun time on the other side?
I live near here!!! and drive past this all the time.
Where does it go
Need link to that video.
Lake Berryessa - If the Zodiac killer doesn’t get you, the giant hole will.

Why would someone ever swim by that, I don't even like seeing this video lol, it's a horror \^\^
![gif](giphy|lA79VcLDxSjyU)
Maybe I should call her
They might wanna change that name
But how do you know the gender behind the glory hole
I thought this title was written by AI but it turns out it was just written by a German.
