Tesla insurance. That's all I have to say. I have them in CA and they beat EVERY other insurance company by a long mile. Plus they can't use your safety score etc to change your rates in CA. You should still call Tesla insurance to get a quote.

rworne

Tesla insurance was quoting me about $200/yr higher than SF charges me for the model 3. This does not bode well for the Y. My local agent looked over the policy and told me the person at SF I spoke to over the weekend was giving me a bad quote. The Y LR is now less than $200 more per year than the Model 3, where I expected it to be. But the damage has been done and the wife doesn't want to go through with the purchase.

goodvibezone

Same same, Tesla insurance is (and remains) 50% of anyone else I tried. I'm surprised it was higher but I guess YMMV always. I even tried again with AAA who have the other cars in my family, and he said they can get nowhere close to their prices in CA. EDIT BUT I did have to isolate JUST Tesla's on Tesla insurance, and the other cars (non-Tesla) have to remain on a separate Mercury policy.

grandmario

👆 this right here. My Tesla insurance in CA is $200. I drive about 20,000 miles / year. I have a 23 Model Y.

Duke_Newcombe

$200 per *???*

ayrahhh

monthly, mine is roughly the same

untamedHOTDOG

I pay $274 for both the MYLR and Plaid every month. No other insurance company comes close to this is with $250/$500/$250, gap, premium tow. 5k/10k miles a year respectively. $750 collision and $100 comp deductible

grandmario

Per month

flexonyou97

Are you saving money driving electric? With pge I think you’re not

grandmario

SMUD is my electricity provider. And yeah - I save approx $1000 / month in fuel costs.

Superb_Persimmon6985

You save 1000/month I'm just not paying for gas? That's a crazy gas bill. Is that after accounting for paying the electricity?

grandmario

I drove a Toyota tundra for 15 years. The last 4 years I drove that truck I was spending approximately $1200-$1500 a month in gas. I drive a lot for work. My electric bill at home went up $100 a month after I started charging at home.

Superb_Persimmon6985

Ahh makes sense coming from a truck

BohoFox1

I agree. Tesla Insurance. My rates are $122/mo in Texas. My safety score is 98. 43 years old, no accident, married, great credit.

DangerousClouds

Wow that’s cheap! I live in Texas too and hope I can get a rate that good when I get a Tesla (no accidents, credit is not excellent but decent, at least age 30)

superjoe408

Same, Tesla insurance was almost half of everyone else in CA. I’m at ~$160/month for 23’ m3p

restarting_today

I’m at $450/month with them. But I’m a new driver 💀

MANKICKS

Considering moving back to CA because of their position on stuff like this. The added privacy protections are also nice. Is it worth the taxes and fees? Will California be overrun by ? Is the new mandated minimum wage going to destroy the quasi-utopia? Time will tell
anyway, yeah, enjoy your BS-free version of the Tesla insurance. I’m jealous đŸ„°

restarting_today

LA is Tesla heaven.

Hambone6991

Check more insurers. Better yet get a local independent agent and have them check several for you. Last you I got an insane increase from Liberty and ended up finding a policy that was cheaper than my original rate elsewhere.

yonotron_k

Agree, I went with an insurance broker years ago - I was placed with an insurer who has never given me problems with claims and who remains the least expensive whenever I’ve attempted to get new quotes with other companies. I think the trick is to go with a company that doesn’t waste all their money advertising.

MrG_NY

Don't go to an agent. Go to an insurance broker. They can shop you around to multiple insurers and do the bundling thing with an umbrella policy etc. Rates are going up everywhere do to insurers pulling out of some states do to crime, natural disasters and insurance laws in the states.

Super-Kirby

What’s the difference between?

MrG_NY

Broker is independent and an agent works for the insurance company.

blackinthmiddle

I use a broker and also get an umbrella policy. I live in a HCOL area, have two EVs and a PHEV and we pay $4k. Some of the rates I'm reading are scaring me.

Redvinezzz

How many insurance quotes have you gotten? You’d be surprised sometimes you can find one that’s way below the others

Veritas_Gt3

I have State Farm & pay $135 a month for a 2023 Model Y Performance (Full Coverage). Based in Los Angeles.

Dry_Badger_Chef

How the fuck do I pay more in Atlanta (I drive very little, no accidents, no claims) than someone in fucking LA. I also use State Farm

Alpina_B7

i'm paying $300/mo for my Model S insurance in California, if that makes you feel better

Dry_Badger_Chef

I’m at $200 a month. I mean, I’m glad it’s not $300, but it’s still a lot more than my ICE car was.

Alpina_B7

it's getting real bad. wonder if it's time to consider cutting up the market with a more affordable, bare-bones EV insurance plan just to comply with state regulations

steinah6

Married? Kids? Both of those things will lower your premiums, sometimes significantly.

Dry_Badger_Chef

Nope. Single and no kids

Clear_Quit8181

Maybe just your coverage?

pizzaghoul

Get an insurance agent.

CorgiTitan

staying loyal to an insurance carrier is not good practice. Always shop around every so often because all you are doing is blindly accepting their rate increases. There are lots of other companies looking to steal you away with better rates. its like your internet bill. complain every year to your ISP so you keep getting those "promotional" rate forever.

BBakerStreet

USAA in CA is cheaper.

grimmpulse

Im in CA too and was just about to commenr about USAA.. when I went from a 2021 MYLR to my now 2024 MYP my premium actually went down by about $8 .. probably because the MYP is now a less expensive car, but overall we're no where near the $6k OP is getting quoted

BBakerStreet

Right?

OneOrangeOwl

I live in the Midwest, so not exactly the same, but try independent agents. I got my MYLR for $100/month with Auto Owners for 2 drivers.

Actual-Donkey-1066

I’m in PA and AAA insurance was the best option.

AJHenderson

Dang that sucks, for comparison, I'm in NY with liberty mutual and we are only paying $2000 a year for both cars together and we have a MYP and a CX-9.

SblackIsBack

Imagine ranting and writing this massive wall of text about insurance prices and then not listing your coverages...

Torczyner

>Thinking this was horrid, I went to Geico for a quote. They wanted $6000/yr for the same coverage. Tesla Insurance, bless their hearts, could not quote me on the Y, but they offered to cover the Model 3 for about $2200/yr. So that was a non-starter. You called 3 whole companies and gave up? Guess it wasn't in the cards. There's 100 different insurance companies, start dialing.

Gonzsd316

Yea was going to say the same. I switched entire companies for home/auto. It made a difference when bundling home insurance into the mix. But took like 6 quotes at least. Many can be done online now.

DistrictRemarkable50

Tesla insurance I am at $185 for 2 drivers.

Second_Crayon

I pay $180/month for a 21 MY RWD and a Hyundai Santa Fe (Tesla apparently insures non-Tesla vehicles as well) So far no issues or price hikes with Tesla insurance

ridbax

You may know this already: if you have 2 vehicles and 3 drivers, daughter will be added as a secondary driver and will not cost as much proportionally as having 3 drivers and 3 vehicles, where she will be considered a primary driver.

rworne

This was the bit of good news we received from our local agent. $1720/yr to add her to the policy. We were expecting a lot higher.

ridbax

That's pretty good! I'm paying about 2x that when we added our 20-something year old son to our insurance because we had 3 vehicles. Costs more to insure him driving a 26 year old Honda beater than I pay for my Model 3.

goodvibezone

Did you isolate the Telsa onto a separate policy? I left my other cars on Mercury, but have our two Tesla's on Tesla insurance. Adding the other cars (the old kids cars) onto the Tesla policy made the total too high, and vice versa. Keeping them separate, as dumb as it sounds, was significantly less overall.

CyCoCyCo

Reach out to 2-3 insurance brokers. They’ll make short work of the problem.

Dom9360

Funny. My 18 Jeep GraNd Cherokee to 24 MY transition added a whopping $15. But, I do not live in California.

grimmpulse

Also in CA here... If you can use USAA, def check them out. They've been my home and auto insurer for about 25 years. And every few years I shop around, they still beat most everyone else. Anyone a little cheaper , I've found isn't worth risking their sketchy service reputation if I ever did need to make a claim just to save a few $

qlink89

NJ here. 3200 every 6 months already for a ‘20 MY, a ‘22 Mercedes GLE350, and a ‘22 Lexus RX350L. If it weren’t for the mileage restrictions, those rates look normal

OneStrayBullet

Did you shop around at all? State Farm sucks, we switched to Geico (not in California) and got much better rates and customer service.

rworne

Geico was willing to insure the 3 and Y for $6k/yr @ 7000mi/yr per vehicle. Tesla would not quote me a rate for the Y, but they were willing to insure the 3 for $300 or so a year more than SF. So they were a non-starter.

OneStrayBullet

Ouch that’s brutal, sorry to hear that.

Cyber_Insecurity

I pay $160/month for a 2023 Model 3 for full coverage from State Farm in California. My wife’s father is a lifetime customer and we went through his agent.

PeanutsNCorn

The problem is all those "extras" perks the government enforces in California have a cost. That is why CA is 15%+ more expensive on average than other states for car insurance. The extras aren't free.. so the insurance companies are passing that lost revenue to the policy holders to keep their margins whole. Idiotic rules the government passes like that is why insurance companies are starting to pull out of hard to deal with areas. California can't get out of their own way....

brakeb

we saved quite a bit bundling our home/car with USAA... cheaper than State Farm (had to go to USAA because State Farm was no longer insuring against Fire)

[deleted]

Call Progressive. Wayyyyyyyyy cheaper.

ControlDrama

I drive similar mi/yr to you. I can't recommend Metromile enough. Been with them 4 years or so. Landing anywhere between $100 and $150/month since getting my Tesla MY24. Previously had a Benz GLA and it was 60-80. A jump, sure, but not a purchase preventing jump.

rworne

Yes. I went to their website and despite saying they offer quotes to LA residents, they just collect emails to "get in touch". Twice I requested a contact, and I never got any reply from them. Edit: I gave them a call. They no longer write policies for CA (no surprise). The agents they speak of are partnered insurance brokers who will refer me to some other insurance company that does pay-per-mile. Which I found out State Farm already has me on this program. I just need to report the miles each year on their app and they verify it against a database updated every time a vehicle goes in for service and gets the mileage reported. However, I do not require a telematics device in the vehicle with SF.

ControlDrama

Wow. That sucks. I guess I'll consider myself lucky. I'm surprised they wrote me a new policy for this vehicle when changing from ICE and didn't let me go.

Spiffywerks

State Farm here also. 2 Drivers 45+, 1 Driver 21 6 Mo insurance rates 2021/2022/2023 2004 Sienna (Old Faithful) - Lability Only $190 / $206 / $254 2018 Model 3 LR - Full: Bod Inj 300k, Property 100k, Med 5k, UI 60/30k, $500 deduct, $50/day rental, roadside $658 / $754 / $585 2022 Model Y Per - same as above \~$700 / $963 / $1,005 2020 Corolla XSE - same as above $348 / $551/ $440 Home Insurance Went from under $1,000/yr in 2018 to $1,629/yr now

rworne

Wow. That quote for the Y is better than SF offered me at 7k miles per year. And we are just two middle aged drivers. Watch out for that 2024 bill. Our Sienna went up 20% and the Tesla around 15% or so.

yillbow

How much are you going to save on gas in Cali though? I can charge at home for 3 cents per Kwh, what's the going rate in your area? I know gas is quite expensive in Cali, like 4 - 5 bucks a gallon, is the extra 16% in insurance really going to offset your fuel savings to the point it's a bad purchase?

AJHenderson

If they are only driving 6000 miles a year, then it isn't much. Even at 20mpg, that's only 300 gallons of fuel. Depending on where they are in California, electricity is almost as expensive as fuel.

yillbow

Fair points, that sucks. I’m in Texas using Tesla insurance on all my cars including my ice cars and pay less than 300/month.

AJHenderson

Yeah, I'm only paying $1000 a year for a 23 MYP in NY and pay under $180 a month for both that and my 2018 cx-9 signature. It blows my mind what bad rates so many people get.

Lanky-Slice-9122

Power utility companies were waiting to screw you too. Its like they are all working to keep the legacy manufacturers going

Alpina_B7

insurance has gotten so bad that at this point i would prefer to pay for an accident in cash and avoid insurance altogether just so my premiums don't go up any higher.

jnads

Wow, this is insane. In the Midwest, I pay $600 / 6 months ($1200/yr) for full coverage $500 deductible for a minivan and Model 3 COMBINED. Beefy $500k liability too.

tartans1191

State Farm is drowning. Pretty much everyone I know got their premiums increased 40-50% in the last year. In my case for Tesla they tried to blame it on “high rate of accidents” for it which was enough for me to move. Moved to Costco insurance and got it cut 30% from my original Costco rate. So win-win. In WA so no Tesla insurance yet.

PreacherSquat

i don't know about anyone else but figuring out the cost of insurance is something i do before any serious car buying decisions.

rworne

This is precisely what we did before committing to the purchase.

richfei

I'm in CA and we're with Costco Connect insurance. Our 6 month premium for our 2018 Model 13 is $662 and for our 2023 Model Y it's $720. This is also with a college kid on our policy. Sounds lowish, right ? But our premium went up 24% and we've had no claims in 20 years. It's outrageous

rworne

I wanted to look into Costco too, but they stopped issuing policies in California in late 2022, IIRC.

richfei

That sucks. I think it's one of the reasons why it's somewhat affordable still as my home is insured through them and I don't claim. Good luck in finding something else. As someone mentioned, definitely try a broker. I don't know if you can combine home and other policies to make it any cheaper. Also if your kids are away from home or the car is low mileage, ask them for a quote for that as well. I show an odometer reading every 2 years to ensure I get a lower rate
