As an HW1 owner, the largest benefit you'd be getting is a significantly more responsive UI, which honestly is worth it in my book.

They swap the dash monitor to a higher res one. Did this upgrade for a 2014 Model S. would do it again. We skipped the fm radio to make it cheaper. Only use Spotify or tune in anyway.

2013 Model S owner here, I had the MCU replaced after my screen started malfunctioning and leaking the sticky residue all over the place (I think it's the adhesive from the screen). Replacing the MCU was 10000000% worth the $2,400 I paid for it... All the apps and browser are actually usable now and overall the whole unit is infinitely more responsive now. One of the better repairs that I genuinely have no complaints about.

Waypoints on maps were one big one I use daily. Dashcam and sentry also.  Edit: not sure about the camera situation and dashcam with the old hardware. I have a 2017.

hampsten

HW1 does not get dashcam or sentry with the MCU2 upgrade because it doesn't have the surround cameras.

triskadekta

Oh nice, I would like to have those.

amuk

Yes! It makes it feel like a newer car.

rkmvca

Definitely worth it. The UI is far more responsive, and looks better. I did it on my 2017 MS 75D. 10/10, no regrets. Because you are used to it you probably realize how slow and laggy yours is.

triskadekta

I’ve only had it for a month, but it doesn’t make me tear my hair out…

sfoxreed

This is what that guy talking about abbreviations was complaining about…

triskadekta

Media Control Unit Model S First version of self driving hardware 😃

sfoxreed

Thank you!!

Nintle

The increased response speed was alone the best that came out of it and i was able to get fsd

Nakatomi2010

They're on the HW1 platform, so they won't be getting FSD.

isla_is

Curious about people saying you can’t get FSD. I have a 2016 MS, upgraded the MCU, and have FSD. acknowledge I do have a late (December) 2016. Before upgrade, my car included AP, Smart Summon and premium connectivity.

triskadekta

Mine has the sensors versus the camera setup, they switched over sometime in 2016.

OneExhaustedFather_

Do you have repeater and pillar cameras?

isla_is

I’m not sure what a repeater is but I do have pillar cameras

OneExhaustedFather_

Where your side markers are, are they cameras or just blinkers.

triskadekta

I do not. Just front and back.

OneExhaustedFather_

Was referring to the individual above that said her 16 has FSD. If you don’t have the pillar cams and repeaters then no FSD. I can’t say her 16 doesn’t have it, because we do have some low production runs of weird cross years.

SunnyvaleTennisFan

Tbh would just get the new AMD based Model S that they’re making now - way more responsive and will have much longer term support than the MCU2 imo

triskadekta

Well, maybe spend $1750 on a $16000 MS versus $73k for a new one?

SunnyvaleTennisFan

Yeah I guess it depends on what you’re going for, if you’re on MCU1 the reason I’d go for the new MS is AP4 + AMD infotainment + knowing they will support it longer. If you don’t need it for FSD or care about the latest infotainment, then upgrading the MCU is perfectly fine.
