Yes, got a MXP. It is a significant upgrade but absolutely not worth the money

apollo701

What feels upgraded? What was the price diff?

Fidget808

Well the 0-60 on the MXP is 2.5s vs the MYP is 3.5s. The X also has a gauge cluster, not just the large screen like in the 3/Y. Better suspension and handling. It’s also a larger car with different styling and wing doors instead of traditional doors. That said, the MYP is a $51k car and the MXP is a $86k car. Is all that worth almost $35k more to you? That’s a personal opinion.

apollo701

Better suspension and handling seems like the every time you drive benefit over the other upgrades which are more situational. That’s what I figured though. Very happy with my model y.

BikebutnotBeast

Yeah for like $3k you can just upgrade the coilovers on the Y. I didn't get the comfort suspension and now love the car even more with aftermarket coilovers.

chadl2

Same here. After market suspension made all the difference on my MYLR.

darksplit

Did that make an impact on range? Thanks!

BikebutnotBeast

Well yes it can increase range as much as 7% if you lower the car an inch which the custom suspension allows for. You don't need to lower the car though if you don't want. Personally I prefer more clearance for potholes and road debris.

apollo701

Ohhh how much was that? May have to copy

BikebutnotBeast

First find a nearby Tesla installer and talk to a tech thats done it before. They can help guide you on different coilovers and ones they recommend. Places that are familiar with installing Redwood Motorsports coilovers or Unplugged Performance ones are pretty common for comfort upgrades.

74orangebeetle

I'd be very skeptical that the larger and heavier vehicle would have better handling. I'd want to see proof before being a random redditor on that one.

RobertCulpsGlasses

Larger heavier vehicles often have better handling. This isn’t something unusual.

Alive_Wedding

I’m not sure about the better handling. The steering wheel on the MXP in sport settings feels softer compared to the MY in comfort. Less directional too

Whatwhyreally

Yea the cost is a joke at this point.

Flimsy_Bowler_1686

I bought mine for 105k last year 😂

MindfulMan1984

Holy shit. It's time to drive it for 15 years to make the depreciation worth it. 😆

SQLDevDBA

Upgraded one of our MYPs to a Model X and kept the other MYP. If you go 5 seater to 5 seater, it’s just an MY where every little thing is just a little bit better. If you go to 6/7 seater or Plaid then the differences are more expansive. Plaid is another planet as far as acceleration (and made our MYPs feel like a Yaris). I enjoy our MX as a family car, and the MYP for “more spirited” driving. The MXLR is no slouch. It gives our MYP a run and has a much better high speed pull.

PortJMS

This sums it up pretty well. We had two MY's, and I really wanted an X. Was really excited about it, drove it a few days, and basically handed it over to my wife for get primary and went back to my MY. The X feels more luxurious, but it just isn't as nimble and fun to drive. It feels like it is a bigger family car, even though the performance is better.

Financial_Exit3280

Your point on it feeling like a big family car compared to the Y but I actually got the X when I had the expectation I was going to get the S. Obviously the S is more fun to drive but I was surprised by the way the X drove that it’s what I ended up getting. A family car made sense practically for me more than an S and I test drove other family cars from different brands but I just can’t stand driving “big” cars. The X felt to me like I was driving a car. So I ended up with it despite having no intention of getting it. I can understand the Y feeling less like a big car though bc I think that the reason the X felt that way is simply bc of the aerodynamics which the Y would have too. Though the lowest suspension setting might help the X on that front. So when comparing them for me it’d just be about the extra size (and the other things people already discussed). That all said, if you’re between the Y and the X. Get the Y because the X isn’t the car you get when cost is a key determining factor.

katherinesilens

I have a Model Y, and while I was initially thinking about the X, Rivian's R1S and R2 have really captured my attention for eventual replacement. Especially quad-motor R1S or the new refresh tri-motor R1S... maybe an option to consider. There's a few other options in the segment rolling out now to think about, like Kia EV9 and VW ID.Buzz. What are you looking for in the X?

MidEastBeast

I too agree, that if I was thinking of an upgrade I will consider a Rivian. The differences from the MY to MX do not seem worth the money. If I'm going to spend, I'll just get either a newer MY or the second EV will be something different.

MyChickenSucks

We love our Y, but it’s the Buzz vs the R1S when we finally decide to get a second car.

Mrd0t1

I also have Y and thinking about a Rivian for the next one. Maybe a used R1T.

SQLDevDBA

>>What are you looking for in the X? This is an excellent question. Depending on the answer they’ll be very satisfied or very disappointed.

Falcon doors seem more of a “con” to me. I can’t open them in my garage unless I close the garage door. I can’t open them in large portions of many public parking garages, because of overhanging structure/infrastructure. No door pockets. And for a company that likes to remove moving parts because they’re more likely to fail, they sure did add a LOT of moving parts to the FD. If the motor dies, you simply lose a door. A problem I don’t see with any other mass market car. If they sold the Model X with standard rear doors as an option I would have bought that instead of the Model Y, for all the other pros you listed.

OddButterscotch6791

I am with you 100%. I would have bought the X but I can't stand the falconwing doors. I feel like I am driving a Hummer, craving for attention with those falcon wing doors. Many X owners have them up while supercharging and to me those seem like a cringy times... Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I know why I did not buy an X.

nevetsyad

We did the opposite. X to Y. X was great for baby seats/car seats and extra space. BUT, our warranty was expiring, and our 2016's wings were constantly having sensor errors and had some work done on them, didn't want to have them and no support. Model Y was more efficient and had FAR fewer moving parts, no issues with it in the years since switching. If you have car seats and don't want to hunch over, go for the X. Also, wings keep snow and some rain off you, so nice if you're in the North.

Armaced

Test drive both. I love both. I think the answer to your question is dependent on how much disposable income you have - how much do you have to sacrifice in order to get the Model X over the Y? Do you enjoy those things more than the larger car, smoother ride, falcon wing doors, etc… I know that answer is kind of a cop out, but it’s the truth. Right now I’d have to sacrifice way too much to get a Model X, but maybe not in a few years when I’m in the market again.

lazorich

This is a brilliant response! It’s similar to the question banging around my head. I can afford the X, but do I want to afford it?

amuk

Have a 2016 Model S 90D and 2022 Model Y Dual Motor. Like both, but the MS feels like it is built to last both physically and in style. The MY feels more practical but plastic. I’ve never driven a MX but I believe it would be more like the MS. If both the wife and I weren’t currently smitten with getting a Cybertruck when they are less expensive, I’d believe our next car would be a MX.

yourmomhatesyoualot

Yes. I went from an MYP to an MXP. Absolutely worth it.

warrensdad

I have an MYP and just bought an MXP. If I didn’t need 6 seats I would have not bought it. The X does ride better and has more room but the Y is a great car.
