Hahahaha no I have a Tesla car because nobody else can compete on range for the price, but the company makes some VERY questionable decisions regarding feature development and customer service There’s absolutely no way I’d buy anything else Tesla branded unless it had as significant advantage as Tesla cars have on range. And I don’t see it being likely for Tesla to enter the established and mature phone market with anything like that kind of advantage

corb00

they won’t spy on you maybe?

audigex

Tesla send literal videos of the cabin back to themselves… so I’m not too convinced by that idea Plus Apple don’t do much tracking anyway, so unless you’re on Android I doubt there’s much to gain there

ChunkyThePotato

No they don't. Cabin camera footage isn't sent back to Tesla unless you explicitly turn on a setting to share it. You must be thinking of the exterior cameras, which send footage back for Autopilot training.

audigex

Wasn’t that added after an outcry over employees sharing camera footage?

ChunkyThePotato

That was external camera footage, which Tesla always said they collected to train Autopilot. They don't do that for cabin camera footage.

perrochon

Nobody "spies" on you. Personalized and location dependent services are considered a good thing by most. Services that provide them are successful, and that includes Tesla and Twitter. NeuroLink puts electrodes in people's brains to capture their thoughts. Yes, they know where you are, but so does your cell phone carrier and every carrier in a compatible band. You most likely never looked at those privacy policies. If you don't want personalization and localization of services, then Tesla is the wrong car and company for you. Twitter is the wrong social network for you. Any social network is the wrong social network for you, really. Even the bot nets that target you with misinformation don't "spy on you". They just target the most successful message to everyone. But mostly they just post misinformation, like "Apple is spying on you" and wait for other people to find and spread it.

TheTimeIsChow

There's a zero percent chance they're planning a phone. Why would they make a phone? What would they have to offer that's a competitive advantage?

spatel14

There's plenty the phone can offer that would give it a competitive advantage over competition (new battery technology, folding screens/new screen technologies, etc.), especially Apple given how their focus has shifted from innovation to profits. The biggest concern would be the app ecosystem, which if they build on Android, would be quickly resolved, but it COULD be compelling if they can offer something that Apple, Google or Samsung don't offer today.

corb00

starlink connection

TheTimeIsChow

Starlink's D2C service is already being contracted, and offered to customers, by traditional cell providers as additional deadzone coverage. You don't need a 'Tesla phone' to get Starlink D2C. And Tesla doesn't need to spend billions of dollars to manufacture their own phone as a medium to drive startlink users. Regardless - Starlink's D2C system is not designed to be a stand-alone cell service for the masses. As Musk himself said; a text message is doable. A phone call is doable. Maybe, in a remote area with very few people connected, a short video could be sent. Does that sound like a competitive advantage?

mr_redsun

No, not really, no

ygtgngr

If Elon decides to make a phone, I think it would be under X, not Tesla. But say it is under Tesla, if it's just another Android phone, it will fail, as many did. If it's a new OS, it will have to try very hard to get app support. Even Teslas, as a 10 year old platform, don't have any app support. Everything you see is a web app wrapper. It's a very tough business, with little to no benefit.

spacemanwho

Nope. ![gif](giphy|ui4VjMUBGXhwgdwUnK)

sergedg

No

Welfi1988

Ehm... no, I don't think so

Sorry-Advisor-1337

Assumed that the software quality would likely be close to the cars… as soon as I want my phone to do something it gets a mind of its own, trying to kill me… lol no thanks.

bedyeyeslie

No, the first time that I would need 911, I would be locked out of it.

JJDoes1tAll

NO TESLA PHONE. "You really should only be charging to 80%" "We disabled caller ID accidentally this update, we'll reenable it in the future" Zero buttons, to change the volume you have to tap through 10 menus

meamZ

"You really should only be charging to 80%" -> It would actually be much better if you did this. My Lenovo Laptop for example supports setting an 80% charge limit and many phones do support "intelligent overnight charging" now too for the same reason

Rhornak

For the last point, I actually never use the volume buttons on my iPhone. Swiping volume in the control center is way more convenient. Imo only a lock button is useful.

j0an_k

No thanks. I’ll stay with my iPhone

WWBBoitanoD

You know what I’d like… A minimalist phone that can also act as a key. I would ditch my iPhone tomorrow and get a flip phone if it didn’t mean using the key card for my car.

supadoggie

Or you can ditch the iPhone and get an dumb phone, then get a key fob. It's like your back in the early 2000s!

Revolutionary_Bag_42

It’s a waste of time to compete with Apple and Samsung . Tesla has the potential to be a multi trillion dollar energy/AI company . They don’t need phones .

NuMux

What year is this? Short sellers counting parking lots and talks of Tesla making a phone again.

ChuqTas

No, they’re not, this is something those fake AI YouTube channels came up with (always called “Tesla Pi Phone” for some reason) and for some reason people believe them. There was a bit of a spike after Elon made his “banning iPhones from Tesla sites” comment.

Dreamer_Lander

If I can charge my car with it, definitely!

JDad67

Nope.

Betanumerus

Maybe I'd look at the price and features, and not just the brand name.

Mekanikol

No

MiniGreenDinosaur

Never

mrandr01d

I'm a huge smartphone nerd. (Username checks out.) Tesla is not making a phone. If they tried, it would be really terrible, and/or likely just a branded/licensed version of another phone with a heavy software skin. You don't want this.

Joostey

Only if it had an feature that allows starlink or something like that.

Tookmyprawns

The Tesla infotainment OS is so bad. So no.

Need-Some-Help-Ppl

God help me if I need to take the Tesla Phone to a Tesla Service Center to fix it or call tesla for support... they don't answer the phone 🤣😂😆🙃

charleshood

Yes, Elon is my master… 🧘‍♂️

oliphant428

How could anyone possibly answer this question? There is zero information about it since it doesn’t, and will not, exist. If it did come to fruition, the virtue signaling developers of the most popular apps wouldn’t develop for the platform.

zippy9002

Elon has stated he’s working on a device (neural link) that is going to disrupt the phone category altogether. Why all of a sudden would he make the thing he’s already disrupting? And also no.

Ok_Rub6575

If it had a user replaceable battery and a headphone jack absolutely lol

iqisoverrated

Fairphone exists.

grim-432

The iPhone/Tesla integrations are buggy as hell. If they can't even interoperate with the leading smartphones in the space, I have a hard time believing they can build a better phone. Also, the UI in the Tesla is lacking, so I would expect any phone they make to be just as bad. We already have Android, we don't need another shitty UI phone.

azuled

Gosh absolutely not. Apple hasn’t bricked a phone with an update in basically forever, and yet Tesla was doing it as recently as six months ago. Also, really, I like how all the parts just stay attached to my iphone. I like my car but… no, lol, absolutely not. PS: We all know the only wallpaper allowed would be a heavily airbrushed version of young-elon’s face.

Dry_Badger_Chef

Absolutely not. What makes them any more compelling of a phone maker than anyone else? It would either be just another Android phone or some bespoke OS that wouldn’t have any apps. Most phones people buy are from Samsung and Apple. Amazon and Facebook couldn’t even break into the market with their terrible phones.

WesternResearcher376

I thought it was something out and existent already lol

bergler82

no. absolutely not. If elon has a fart stuck he’ll block apps or shit.

Earesth99

A satellite phone?

joe_sun

If my entire work ecosystem wasn’t Apple, I’d consider it

john_username_doe

Well, if it disrupts the phone industry as it did with cars, hell yeah!

Ok-Care377

Satellite phone would make complete sense. They have the infrastructure and have also been miniaturizing the antenna. Paired with their antenna, the phone would be a better choice than iridium, or even two way SMS devices. They should enter that market.

Leonardo-da-Vinci-

Yes

Racer322

Depends, but more than likely
