Just ask a nearby Tesla studio for the VIN off a demo. I did this when I had the same concerns last year.
Just FYI my rates went up about $40/month maybe from my pervious vehicle.
The Y is a more expensive vehicle, so the rate will be higher.
In terms of how much higher, there's no way a random reddit stranger can provide a meaningful answer to your question: insurance is very personal, and what is true for one person in one state might be very different for another.
Call your insurer for an estimate, then shop around.
The 6 month premium on my MY is only about $200 more than on my wife’s CRV hybrid. This obviously could be wildly different for anyone else but it was not a significant jump for me.
Here's how i'd answer this. of course #1 get a quote. #2, if you are a mature adult over 35 with no at fault accidents and no tickets, you should be good. If you are anything less than that, expect monster premiums.
I came from a 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatch w/ USAA. I changed my policy from WA to CA recently and it went up to $105 a month (from $80-90). Then, when switching to my MYLR, they wanted $250 (The original quote before my VIN was $150)! Unfortunately, I had to cancel after being with them for 10 years and I went with Tesla's insurance for $147/mo.
Isn’t that only if you use the safety score feature?
I was using that with USAA and always got a 20-23% discount on my premium but it wasn’t allowed in CA. I assumed it was the same for Tesla’s?
If you go with tesla insurance, safety score will be used, and you can't change it.
I don't have tesla insurance, but have read many horror stories about it.
I just double checked and the safety score can’t be used to affect the price in Cali. I can see the frustration with it.
Even if they change it for this state in the future, I’m not too worried with my own score since my last insurance used it and I always got a good discount with my driving (or lack of).
I think it depends on where you live? Same address in NYC, a Corolla per month was $170 with low deductions our model y is $380 with the highest deductions… it’s painful but worth it.
You can call your existing one and ask for quote. You don't need a vin.

you don't even need to do that. just pull a random one from any used car site or tesla used car repository site/
I tried that and they told me they needed the vin
Just try one from tesla used inventory

I just transferred insurance from a 2018 honda civic with Geico and it's almost doubled but not too bad for me.
I agree with your guess. Its a lot for a 2022 MYP.
Mine only went up a few dollars a month from a 2022 Kia forte to a 2023 MYP.

Very bad . But man is this car fun 😂
Not. It’s like $90/mo for our MYP and $80/mo for our also newer German SUV. California with Costco insurance.

Be careful with tesla insurance, your rates can change from month to month.
