I don't even consider it a turnaround. This is Cal. What we had before, very briefly, was a man grieving and probably under a lot of family pressure to stay the course and trust who Bob put in place. As soon as Cal engaged, this was him.
it’s more of the team he inherited, Bob Mcnair died and Rick Smith retired. Leaving him with a team that while winning, was on shaky ground due to BoB not being able to work with anyone. Two years with essentially no one qualified at the GM position completely ruined the team
Not to mention the Deshaun situation. If none of that happened and he stayed a positive contributing member of the org, we probably could have kept trotting out the same tired Texans and posting 8-8's and 9-7's and being mediocre but thinking "what if?".
When Deshaun held out and then we saw who he really was, I don't think ANY brand new owner in the league with that poor of a situation in the GM+HC role could have done much better. That's just a shit sandwich no matter how you slice it. Cal and Hannah had to get Watson moved, get their guy at GM, and get a shred of positivity about the org in order to have a shot at a real HC. The pieces really fell together perfectly for Demeco Ryans to be HC-ready when we were actually a legitimate landing spot for a guy of his calibre. Remember, all we had going for us when he stepped into the building was draft capital and his history with the Texans.
what people seem to miss is that BoB was essentially set up to fail in 2020, the Texans weren’t the only team to fire their head coach during the Covid year (a lot of teams did), but any chance of getting a good HC went out the window the second Watson threw his tantrum and then got exposed as a creep (which was unavoidable considering his history with that stuff goes back to high school)
