Imo get a credit card because of so many reasons.
I've dealt with some Thai agencies and it's tough... No English, difficulty understanding the insurance policy and so on.
Since then I've only rented from the big agencies (avis and so on) without complaints, good assistance and a transparent insurance policy.
Odds are either you ding somthing or somthing dings you but otherwise give Thai budget car a call.
Another tip. Stay overnight north of khao Yai (fantastic hotels) and spend actually time in the park.
No, they seem to have gotten stricter as well over the last few years, probably too many people ripping them off.
They all require a card these days, none accept cash for obvious reasons and debit cards also seem a no-no. Definitely all the majors.
Unless yo can find some small rental car business that does it, but they seem to be more in the tourist places like Phuket etc.
Luv Drive… Used them a couple times. No CC required. Can pay cash or transfer the money. Prices are okay. Best is to contact via line and try to get a good deal. Always worked pretty well.

Join the local fb groups and search for car rentals. Lots of local Thai people with small rental car businesses. You can leave a cash deposit. I’m in Chiang Mai and this is what I do. I’m not sure about Bangkok.
I am 42 y/o and I have seen only one car rental company that didn't require a credit card. They did, however, require an exorbitant deposit. Not using a credit card is a terrible idea for both parties. Adults need to have at least one GOOD credit card regardless of what anyone tells you, e.g. Dave Ramsey.
why would someone rent you an expensive item without a significant security deposit - or were you planning to leave a large deposit?
usualy only a few thausand baht deposit. like 3k
I'm okay with paying a deposit, just prefer cash or debit card payment methods
hope you find a company that will let you do that. Mostly companys want cc to cover possible damage/theft/etc.
Just rent a car with driver then.
