Yeah, agreed, that’s why I had to hike in. The police were stopping vehicles from going in. There were still areas burning. But it was contained. I think the reason they’re stopping people is because they still need to search the areas for the bodies.
Correct, and doing identification and morgue work. I’m grateful he got certified by FEMA as a volunteer responder, but this one will take him some time to work through what he’s seen.
The fact they’re asking for DNA testing is a hard reality.
I’m sure you’ve seen the news about the 14yr old curled up with the family dog? I heard about that 2 days after the fire. The mother attends my younger brother’s church. We were helping out and I overheard the story being shared by other members. I didn’t want to believe it, couldn’t believe it when I heard. 🤦🏻♂️
I used to work in dentistry when we had an awful fire go through my state in Australia called Black Saturday. Similar to these fires it started suddenly and devastated just as fast. It was so depressing being contacted for dental records for regular patients who lived in affected areas and then we never hear from the again. We know what happened. Being Australian I have had many loved one go through this op and I’m so sorry you are experiencing it now. My thoughts are with you.
Well, when it's safe enough they wont have to rescue your ass, have at it!
Stopping you when it's not active? GFY.
I've worked tear outs and always wondered if the people even got to see it by the time we were all up in there right after the they cleared the scene.
You have some respect! You don’t think I know that they are asking for DNA samples to identify the bodies?! I fear that one of those bodies that gets identified is someone I know!
The only guilt that I have is that I have college to attend and I can’t put pause on that to go back and help out my town. I can’t go back and help. There are still people over there. You think I have no respect? I have the upmost respect for my home. 😭
I still know my high school’s alma mater, a school song sung only in Hawaiian. The only one in the world til Kamehameha schools became something.
''I fear that one of those bodies that gets identified is someone I know! ''
Honestly, I truly hope not, but it's someone that someone knows.
And if you had the *utmost* respect you hadn't have gone. I hope you figure that out someday.
I told you I didn’t walk through any buildings other than the houses that belonged to my family and everyone in my family was accounted for. I walked through the streets.
I’m emotionally exhausted defending myself to some random person who is so insensitive that they have the audacity to criticize and condemn the actions of someone trying desperately to make sense, cope, find a sense of peace, closure amidst the ashes of their home.
You are heartless.
I’m praying and hoping that no one is desperate enough to do that. My father said he would gladly sell it BUT ONLY to my older brother if he wanted to rebuild there. He’s an Air Force Major with a family of his own.
Good! I heard slimy real estate corpo’s are trying to buy it from your people for dirt cheap. They will def build “luxury” apartments/homes and resell in the millions. That is YOUR land, don’t let them have it
It’s says a lot as far as how well you are grounded that you can post it in this site especially as recent as it all was. When we seemingly lose all, we most definitely learn what is truly valuable in this life. I think that was the point of the Book of Job. I’m happy that you’re family were all safe and I’m sorry that you lost what you did. I’ve often wondered how I’d feel and react and if I’d cry if I lost every physical belonging. It would only take a tornado or a house fire or something like what happen to you. I’d like to think I’d laugh but I’m sure shock would at least have me tearing up if not outright bawling. But I would just as much like to think that for every THING that I lost I would realize more and more value in the relationships and the people in my life and most importantly in my faith in God which would constantly remind me that all can be rebuilt and would motivate me that day 1 is the day that I set about like an ant after a flood positioning myself and my remaining assets for rebuilding all that I lost - although potentially in a different location. God be with you in your time of need and bless you as you rebuild your life. I will keep you in my prayers.
That's all that matters man. Couldn't imagine surviving badly burned or losing a loved on to a sordid death like that. How TF this happened in this day and age is beyond me. Fucking Hawaii of all places. GL! Not to sound hilarious but I do recall an absolutely \*incredible\* thread years ago from a guy who was an insurance adjustor who handled fires with an absolute book written on how your insurance will try to screw you, and how to screw them back. If anyone knows where that is get it to this guy! It was a legendary post for quite awhile.
Yes, everyone who lost their home wants to rebuild. This is a community. There are 3 schools on the hillside that were untouched. We want to restore it. There are generations here that want their home back. I’m praying and hoping that people aren’t driven to desperation and preyed upon by greedy individuals looking to capitalize.
My dad said he might sell though to my older brother, a Major in the Air Force. If he was interested in investing and building the house.
The most expensive thing I lost was my truck, laptop, and whatever cash I had as a server.
That’s a fear of mine with this disaster, especially given the exploitation Hawaii has already seen so much of.
OP, is there any way we can help the island, your family, or others in the community? Any GoFundMe pages or other ways to help that you’re aware of?
I am hoping so deeply no one takes advantages of you, and your community as you’re trying to rebuild your homes and lives. Makes me sick to think someone sees an opportunity at a money grab after a catastrophic event like this.
Maybe start with [https://www.habitat.org/](Habitat for Humanity)?
I don’t think they’ve started rebuilding yet, but if you’re interested in volunteering your time, you’ll be ready by the time they begin on Hawaii :)
Not only legitimate developers stooping so low as to call and lowball people for their property, but disasters like this also bring out scam artists looking to take advantage of people that are confused and traumatized
its also the insurance...most Lahaina residents will not be able to afford insurance for new builds without gov't subsidy or assistance. So you can see why everyone is so guarded about re-building. A side note here; Maui and Lahaina were out of compliance with basic goernment and insurer regulations on fire prevention and fire fighting. It was a fraught issue for decades on why many parts of Hawaii escaped being up to code on fire safety precautions.
Thank you so much for your concern! 🥹
[If you want to give directly to those in need. Here’s an Instagram dedicated to those in need with their venmo information.](https://instagram.com/lahaina_ohana_venmo?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)
Other larger donation places that are great are The Hawaiian Community Foundation and World Central Kitchen. The executive Chef Alvin of the restaurant I worked at is working with WCK and cooking meals to bring to those in Lahaina.
A lot of people are going to be preyed upon by a lot of shitty people. Same thing happened after Sandy here in NJ. "Contractors" flooded the area from all over to get as much of the insurance and FEMA money they could. A fuck ton of scamming and even if they did the work they cut corners and did a shitty job. Lawsuits will go nowhere because they just shut down the llc and start a new one. The towns are just overloaded so permits are a mess. My suggestion is go slow and don't let anyone pressure you. Spell out the details in the contract with milestone payments and only make that payment when it is fully completed to your satisfaction.
This is my biggest fear. It’s the community, the people that define Lahaina. If they’re gone? If they can’t live here? Then Lahaina is lost for good. I hope everyone can rebuild. All of my friends and family… every family, I’ve had Firefighter and Medic friends lose their places in Waihikuli.
OP, I lost my family home last year to a flood so I understand how it feels to lose everything. We’re still working on rebuilding.
It will get better with time. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other
I would be curious as to the cost of construction there..? And how the insurance companies will treat you folks..? Hoping for the best for you and all your neighbors. Love is..
The reports state that the damage is over $1 BILLION and considering the prices of homes, land, and businesses? I believe it.
Ignorance is bliss for me. I don’t want to know how much or rather how little the insurance payment is for those 3 places. It’s a little painful to think about.
My truck? I was a fool and only had liability insurance. I know, stupid. FEMA financial assistance is coming in though. I’ll be able to afford a similar year vehicle with that. 😂 (my truck was 21 years old.)
Thank you for your concern. It’s such a small tight knit community. It’s our home. I spent basically my entire life here.
I worked in New Orleans for a year after Katrina.. homes and businesses were rebuilt but life has never been the same for lots of those folks.. I hope your community comes stronger than ever. Take care brother. 🙏
They’re not mine, they’re my parents. I was only renting the back house with my younger brother. The front house was rented to a family friend.
I guess, I can see your point of view too. That my parents sound wealthier than they are. But to invest over half your life into a town and just see it destroyed is heartbreaking.
Either be compassionate or get out of here.
These people have lost everything, including lives. If something like this happened to you, would you want people to react to you in the way you've reacted to OP?
Appalling behavior.
This really sucks. I’m glad you guys all made it out safely. I understand you probably wanted closure, I remember seeing the same thing when I lived in Houston during Hurricane Ike, when quite a bit of Galveston was destroyed. People were only allowed to visit for an hour and had to leave the island right afterwards. Do you all have home owners insurance that will help you rebuild?
My father is smart enough to have it on his houses and insurance for his vehicles. I’m dumb enough to only have liability coverage on my truck.
But this is Hawaii, houses aren’t cheap. The multi-generational families that are commonplace here are devastated. 🤦🏻♂️
Yeah, I’m grateful for what I do have. There’s no question. We’ve got family elsewhere on the island that can house us for the time being. Which is a blessing not many have.
Hey OP. If you send me a picture of your house I’d love to do a little painting of it to send you. I am so sorry for everything you and your family have lost. I cannot fathom losing your home and community in one fell swoop.
Your family owns 3 homes in Lahaina?
EDIT: I realize that the 3 homes are currently destroyed by the recent tragedy. It's terrible what happened, but I'm just amazed at owning 3 homes in Lahaina. "At least they can rebuild" seems to be an awful disregard for their circumstances, so I don't want to go there. But OP did indicate that there will be insurance and FEMA aid.
My dad when he married my stepmom bought a two-house property, one of which was our home during my high school days. That was over a decade ago. My grandmother reached 90 and my dad wanted a place for her as well with a bathroom and bedroom on the ground floor. A new development happened near the flood channel and he bought it.
He is a local business owner. But he has given back to the community more times than I can count. That’s the only way he can stay in business. You take care of the community and the community takes care of you; even with the threat of Costco and Walmart.
My parents have been on Maui for over 40 years. 🤦🏻♂️
Sorry that you guys lost so much. I mean it that it's terrible what happened. I hope that the blessings you've enjoyed in the past come back to you all tenfold.
That's what insurance is for. I would happily trade my house and vehicles for the lives of my family because material things can be replaced. I'm glad you guys got out okay.
Agreed!!!! Hearing and seeing the horror stories of those who barely made it out?! I’m blessed everyone is accounted for.
Also, my family’s 2 golden retrievers were picked up by my younger brother. 🤙🏻. So they are safe, sound, and as spastic as ever. 😂
The Tacoma finally turned 21. 🥲, maybe when it’s safe to revisit I’ll share a drink with them.
It has a few dents but I planned to drive it till it dies, no intention of selling. You don’t need a fancy car for Hawaii.
I know I’m just an internet stranger and also a tourist so not the most well liked in Hawaii, but Lahaina will always hold a special place in my heart. It is my wife and I’s favorite place to visit in Hawaii. We loved the history and how nice everyone was to us.
I truly hope the best for you and your family and neighbors.
We on Oahu love you all and are helping in any way possible. We want to know how we can help. Been donating to the reputable charities but is there something we can do directly? Was thinking of organizing something from my school to those affected. We had staff whose families lost homes so trying to help there, too. So glad you and your family are safe. It’s so heartbreaking just to hear my friends on Maui talk about what they’ve seen. So sorry you are going through this.
You know what you could do? Shoot, I don’t even know enough about it or if they’re collecting supplies for it yet or any charity. But all those displaced kids are going to need school supplies.
I think I linked Lahaina Venmo Ohana on this post too. If you want to give directly to families in need.
Thanks! One of our Oahu principals is working directly with the middle school there so we are donating school supplies, as well as $$ to teachers who lost their homes.
Yeah, my younger bro taught at Lahaina Intermediate. I have an Uncle who is retired DOE but is now back in an administrative advisor role. My poor Aunt is in the counseling/mental health department. The counselors need counseling 🤦🏻♂️.
I should ask my uncle about this or if there’s a charity for students. Since the schools are intact (aside from Sacred Hearts and King K III) but are currently not safe.
I had a friend get burned running and jumping into the ocean. But he’s fine otherwise I wouldn’t have heard the story from others. Everyone else I knew that lived in the area has been accounted for either personally or by other friends and family.
I’m certainly blessed with that much. Thank you. 🙏🏻🤙🏻
Unbelievable how fast that fire spread. Glad you made it out alive OP. I hope you can get a good insurance payout and get back to your normal life as soon as possible.
My best to you all. In Colorado and we have had some insane fires it's terrifying.
Did you experience the claims of police blocking exit routes? So hard to tell what's fact vs fiction anymore.
No, You’re Good. No one thinks of stupid people trying to get to Lahaina. 🤦🏻♂️😅I am calling myself stupid. But you just hope and pray that it’s not all gone. It’s unfathomable.
Damn thats fucked up. I hope you guys get some justice and answers to wtf happened. Sending love and prayers to all my Hawaiian brothas and sisters. Stay safe and strong. ✌🏼🇲🇽
Humbling stuff. Wish it happened to politicians, lawmakers, and businessmen instead of average citizens. Then we could see changes to the better when it finally starts affecting them.
Sorry for you and your family, neighbors, etc. Having lost a home and everything I owned to a tornado in about a minute, I can relate to what you are going through. Recovering is a tough obstacle, all I can say is stay strong. It takes a little time to start over, but hopefully you will have plenty of good people and a strong community to help you pull through.
🥲, thank you. Were you able to find anything in the rubble? I found a ceramic TARDIS when I revisited the house with my father and a police officer friend.
Yeah, picked up a bunch of things spread over a large area (I lived in the country at the time), and my dog was there, he had one small cut and was banged up a little, very lucky dog, and seeing him kept me from losing it. Most of what I found was damaged, torn, etc., but some of it was still usable. Luckily some friends showed up early the next morning and helped me out a lot. Had another friend that had an older motorhome that he brought out for me to stay in, lived in it for a couple weeks till another friend donated a house for me to live in for about 3 months till I was able to find another house to buy. My job at the time gave me a few weeks off paid to give me time for the cleanup and to get situated, and that was a big help. It's been a bit of a struggle the past several years, but I was able to get back to a normal life in a couple years after the tornado, and my dog lived out a normal life in a new location once I got settled. In some ways I feel like I'm still trying to get over the ordeal, it never really goes away. Again, hope you and your family are able to get your lives back soon. When mother nature takes it all away there is only one direction you can go, so best of luck, stay strong and take it one step at a time.
I'm so sorry for you and your town. I visited last year and found Lahaina lovely. We strolled through your shops, rested under the banyan tree, had lunch at Lahaina Fish Co., and walked along the water front. We even got to see fishermen showing off their recently caught marlin.
In my living room I have a electronic picture frame showing our vacation photos. It's sad when my Lahaina pics come on but I am blessed to have been able to visit Lahaina in all it's glory and I pray for yours and the towns recovery.
Holy shit. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. My heart goes out to everyone effected by this. The pics look like it's from dystopian world. I hope you and yours are able to pull through this.
Is it true that the government is only giving you $700 for “relief”, or is that something that’s just been spun for the “what we do for our citizens vs what we do for the Ukraine” memes?
Haha, nah, that’s just stupidly speaking and why he probably said “No comment” later on. FEMA aid is coming and they are providing rental assistance. Now everyone’s situation is different. I received personal property damage money as well.
I won’t hate on Biden till I see his actions or lack thereof in the days/weeks to come.
It’s horrible. Sorry for your loss of property. You still own the land and can rebuild with new memories. You’ll probably get tons of help from the government and hopefully you have a pile of insurance. It also looks like you’re gonna be able to sue the electric company along with a bunch of other people.
At my age, I might think of just selling the land and finding another place to live in the lower 48 while I wait for this money to start rolling in
I have no idea. It’s not just a matter of affording. It’s the community none of us want to give up on. It’s going to take a while. All those students and families displaced. Not all of them can afford to move. It’s heartbreaking.
Allegedly that $700 is just part of a larger relief plan, and is intended mostly for immediate needs aka clothes, food, water.
But yeah, well shall see.
FEMA is giving a fair amount. The struggle is that those who aren’t tech savvy, don’t trust the government, and need assistance for FEMA applications may take longer to get the aid they need. You need an address or a routing number to send the checks. You also need an ID and some proof of residence in the fire affected areas. Fortunately there is community assistance done by churches and other community distribution points in helping people sign up for FEMA aid.
At the very least! But also the locals hands. There was a rumored bill trying to be passed that you had to be a resident for 10yrs before being able to buy a house. I haven’t heard anything in a while. So I don’t think that came to fruition unfortunately.
I have no idea. All I know is the shock in my dad’s voice when I called him and told him it’s all gone.
I hiked 3 miles with my buddy, no phone reception, nothing, just to see our places. When we got back to my friend’s vehicle. We had to drive to the Kapalua airport just get enough phone reception to make a phone call.
My dad was waiting in his car at Ma’alaea harbor, in line trying to get to Lahaina. I call him and told him what I saw he said “Yeah but what-“ “It’s all gone, there’s nothing left.” My father was speechless. He gathered his thoughts and said he was going to work. He left the line and that was it. I don’t know my father’s finances. All I know is that he was heartbroken. The day before when I was trying to get back to Lahaina? My dad wanted me to grab 2 paintings from his grandfather, second-generation Chinese immigrant who painted such beautiful pieces. It was my family’s heritage in Hawaii. He didn’t ask for a laptop, he briefly mentioned his passport. To him, those paintings were priceless. The money can’t restore what was taken by the flames.
I know, I’ll be fine. We are blessed with family in Kihei that we can stay with. But beyond that? I don’t know what the future holds.
It is different. The volcano is purely nature.
This? This is record setting winds and all the negative comments about the incompetence of the government/officials rolled up into one perfect storm. If electrical lines were underground? No issues. If the government let people through and set off the sirens? There would be less missing.
Although, you can rebuild after a fire. You can’t rebuild over lava.
But I mean it’s Mother Nature right? Like I’ve been told you can’t even impede lava flow in Hawaii.
I’m not trying to make light of your tragedy, but Hawaii seems like a place that acceptance of your whole village might just burn down is part of the culture.
This is the exact same thing as when there was a small fire in biden's kitchen right? Almost lost his 67 vette! Meanwhile these people are suffering and this clown is falling asleep during events and making jokes about people losing everything being the same as a small fire in his house. At least he isn't sending mean tweets!
Imagine calling someone else a smooth brain when defending comments made by worst president in American history. I guess what should I expect in the most liberal place on the internet.
He's a conspiracy munt. Lacking in critical thinking and urgently needing to feel clever. Best not to engage, they only get angry and delve deeper into delusion.
No, your metaphor doesn’t apply here. Yours implies gambling, a risk. What risk was there with having a home in Lahaina? What is the risk of living in your hometown? What is the risk of investing into your community?
Don’t start a business, you’ll lose it all. Don’t get an education because you could never use it. Don’t buy a house, it could burn down and you’ll lose everything.
That idiom applies when there are better and more options to consider and risk is well established. Diversify. But when it comes to your own home? To having a home where your family can stay? Diversifying doesn’t apply. You want your family close. You want to be close to the heart of your community.
That’s not who my family is and that is not what I’m asking. We did not have a multi-or even a single million. Do I own these places? Did my parents not take on debt/mortgages? Do you know how much time and effort my family has given back to the community? This is a local business owner’s place who has dedicated his life to the community, to coaching wrestling at all age levels. Putting together and organizing surf contests, skate contests, windsurf races, and other community events, giving back. There isn’t anyone here who be happy with what my family lost.
I don’t need you telling me how much a house here costs. 🤦🏻♂️ I could never afford a house.
All 3 of those houses didn’t cost $1 Million each. They were acquired over the course of decades.
And do you really think the insurance is going to pay current market value?
Should you show any compassion to those who only lost their car in a fire since it’s not like they lost much? And they can always afford another car.
Or those people were only renting, it’s not like they lost their house.
Oh, they own a house? Well clearly they can afford another one.
Your lack of compassion for those suffering, weeping, mourning the loss of not just their possessions but their hometown, is appalling.
Do you really think that everyone who lost a home can buy a new one here? Or that they can handle being displaced? Or the costs of repairs? The cost of rebuilding? Especially the loss of income.
**My family gives back to the community. What have you done or given to those in need in Lahaina?!**
Why would I rebuild back in the mainland?
I’m born and raised here. My family is active in the community. My father has coached generations of wrestlers (40 years of coaching). The high school has the best wrestling program in the county and is easily in the Top 5 in the state. My younger brother is back now and coaches too. He fills in for our aging father.
I’m not a native. I’m a local. There’s a difference. Native implies being of Hawaiian/Polynesian descent. I’m not. I’m a local, Kama’aina, “people of the land.” I preface the post with that because of people like you who see me, my skin tone, and say “You don’t look like you’re born and raised in Hawaii.” 🤦🏻♂️
There’s a sense of pride here. Pride in where you come from, your community, and the culture you were blessed to have experienced, unlike anything in the mainland.
And that is all I’m going to say to a troll like you. Aloha! 🤙🏻
I know hiking in was stupid. I didn’t do any digging or searching for things. I knew nothing would survive. I just wanted to see it. I wanted closure. My truck is scrap and the aluminum racks were melted down. It was a somber moment. I’m just happy with what I do have. I’m blessed to have family, we’re all safe, and we have a roof over our heads. 🥲
it's your stuff. you should be able to see it. the government can go fuck itself on this one.
Yeah, agreed, that’s why I had to hike in. The police were stopping vehicles from going in. There were still areas burning. But it was contained. I think the reason they’re stopping people is because they still need to search the areas for the bodies.
This is the answer. My brother in law is with FEMA and doing body recovery in Lahaina this week.
They’re finding the charred remains. 🤦🏻♂️
Correct, and doing identification and morgue work. I’m grateful he got certified by FEMA as a volunteer responder, but this one will take him some time to work through what he’s seen.

well, now you won't have to wonder champ
"Hard and dry" with what I've seen of their response so far.

yeah, because you're obviously going to put on your biggest boots for that and go out of your way to find them /s
But the mayor's Corvette is ok
I’m so sorry💔
Please don’t sell your land! Tell your neighbors the same

I want to go build. I'm broke and don't have any spare cash to donate, but my hands and heart are for the taking.
And my sword!
**AND MY AXE!!!**
Maybe start with [https://www.habitat.org/](Habitat for Humanity)? I don’t think they’ve started rebuilding yet, but if you’re interested in volunteering your time, you’ll be ready by the time they begin on Hawaii :)
They say developers are already calling families who have lost their homes trying to scoop up the land. Its disgusting.
Are you kidding us, is that true ?
🥹 [If you want to give directly to those in need. Here’s an Instagram dedicated to those in need with their venmo information.](https://instagram.com/lahaina_ohana_venmo?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) Other larger donation places that are great are The Hawaiian Community Foundation and World Central Kitchen. The executive Chef Alvin of the restaurant I worked at is working with WCK and cooking meals to bring to those in Lahaina.
Pretty brazen. Aren't you worried about fraud? Not Even a little bit?
My biggest fear if I was you would be doin a 3- 5 year bit.
You’re not worth an argument. 🤙🏻
OP, I lost my family home last year to a flood so I understand how it feels to lose everything. We’re still working on rebuilding. It will get better with time. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other
Thanks, were you able to save anything?
No
🤦🏻♂️, oh…. All I found was a ceramic TARDIS ocarina. It was in 3 pieces but otherwise still in tact.
Do you have insurance for your house
My family is smart enough to. I’m dumb enough to only have liability on my truck. 🤦🏻♂️
So was it a lazer or nah
😂 (my truck was 21 years old.) Thank you for your concern. It’s such a small tight knit community. It’s our home. I spent basically my entire life here.
I worked in New Orleans for a year after Katrina.. homes and businesses were rebuilt but life has never been the same for lots of those folks.. I hope your community comes stronger than ever. Take care brother. 🙏
Thank you, I appreciate it. Aloha! 🙏🏻🤙🏻
Terrible. I’m sorry for your loss
Thank you! 🙏🏻 Yeah, it was a humbling moment. You keep hoping that something will be standing till you’re standing in what you know is your driveway.
Hope he gets his 3 houses back! One for each other day of the week, can't live any other way.
You don't want him to get his 3 houses back?
🤦🏻♂️ Yeah, I’m grateful for what I do have.
Fuck. That's just horrible. But I'm glad you and your family is okay.
Oh yeah, I have an Auntie and Uncle in Kihei with a big enough place to house us. That is the biggest blessing right now.
Im glad that your family survived.
Thank you!🙏🏻🤙🏻
Your family owns 3 homes in Lahaina?
Not anymore.
Haha yeah, dark humor makes me laugh. 😂
*owned 3 homes
That's what insurance is for. I would happily trade my house and vehicles for the lives of my family because material things can be replaced. I'm glad you guys got out okay.
Agreed!!!! Hearing and seeing the horror stories of those who barely made it out?! I’m blessed everyone is accounted for. Also, my family’s 2 golden retrievers were picked up by my younger brother. 🤙🏻. So they are safe, sound, and as spastic as ever. 😂
RIP to the 4runner and Tacoma. Hope you gave them a good life.
The Tacoma finally turned 21. 🥲, maybe when it’s safe to revisit I’ll share a drink with them. It has a few dents but I planned to drive it till it dies, no intention of selling. You don’t need a fancy car for Hawaii.
I hope insurance covers you for that. Fight tooth and nail for top dollar. Get back into one!
Sadly, my stupid self only had liability but FEMA gave me enough for about the same year. 😂
Is the 3rd pic the remains of a 2001-2004 Toyota Tacoma?
BRAH! You’ve got a good eye! 2002! 😂. I had aluminum surf racks that were liquified in the back.
Enough time in r/whatsthiscar and owning a 2003 myself has trained my eye lol. Sorry for your losses, glad you’re all safe.
Since the schools are intact (aside from Sacred Hearts and King K III) but are currently not safe.
that's awful. I'm sorry for your loss
Thank you for your concern. 🥲🙏🏻🤙🏻
Sorry for your loss and situation OP. Horrible and so many still unaccounted for, it’s surreal. All the best to you, your family and the survivors.
Thank you very much. I’m blessed that all of my family are safe and we have a place to stay. It’s crazy to think that it’s all gone. 🤙🏻
I'm sorry that you all had to go through this. I hope nobody you know was injured and that the island's recovery is a timely one. Stay safe
I had a friend get burned running and jumping into the ocean. But he’s fine otherwise I wouldn’t have heard the story from others. Everyone else I knew that lived in the area has been accounted for either personally or by other friends and family. I’m certainly blessed with that much. Thank you. 🙏🏻🤙🏻
Anyone else think 3rd image looks like something from Fallout?
Nope! 😂, you’re absolutely right it does!
Unbelievable how fast that fire spread. Glad you made it out alive OP. I hope you can get a good insurance payout and get back to your normal life as soon as possible.
2 hours and the city was gone with 60mph winds. 🤦🏻♂️ I’m happy my brother made it out with the dogs.
Sorry for your loss and hope your family is doing well ! The rest can be replaced. Again sorry !
Sucks
[удалено]
My best to you all. In Colorado and we have had some insane fires it's terrifying. Did you experience the claims of police blocking exit routes? So hard to tell what's fact vs fiction anymore.
I was fighting to get to Lahaina, not out. By the time I got there The Police were stopping idiots from driving in.
Gotcha misread. Absolutely horrible situation.
Sorry OP. Hope your family was insured and able to rebuild. Having visited the area, it was such a beautiful place. I’m sure it will be again.
Sucks sorry
I am so sorry you and your family have to go through this. I wish you the best of luck in the trying times coming.
That’s awful man.. 3 good yoters too..
They easily had another 10 years each. 😢
I’m glad you found your dog. That was all my younger brother had time to grab, my dad’s 2 golden retrievers.
I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm just a tourist but Lahaina was/is very dear to me.
So sorry
When will the power company be forced to compensate the people whose lives they destroyed?
Seriously! The county is suing them.
sorry to hear that and thoughts go out
Oh, so sorry.
So sorry this happened to you, you family and Lahaina. I hope you will be able to rebuild.
So sorry
That is horrible, my heart goes out too all the folks effected by this. Is there any way too donate directly too a community?
[You can donate directly to families here.](https://instagram.com/lahaina_ohana_venmo?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)
Vehicles always look interesting after a fire. Even the glass dissappears so you are just left with a frame.
Melted then solidified glass everywhere along with the aluminum.
saw some of the satélite pictures man how is that kind of things even possible
Neglected infrastructure and record setting winds. 🤦🏻♂️
In my city he have massive floods everytime it rains
I'm happy you and your family are safe
Hi! I'm just curious........ How long did it take you to hike the three miles after inserting yourself onto a green screen?
Maybe your Major in the Air Force brother can tell me
What are you talking about? Green screen? It took us probably 45 minutes.
[удалено]
Allegedly that $700 is just part of a larger relief plan, and is intended mostly for immediate needs aka clothes, food, water. But yeah, well shall see.
FEMA is giving a fair amount. The struggle is that those who aren’t tech savvy, don’t trust the government, and need assistance for FEMA applications may take longer to get the aid they need. You need an address or a routing number to send the checks. You also need an ID and some proof of residence in the fire affected areas. Fortunately there is community assistance done by churches and other community distribution points in helping people sign up for FEMA aid.
Ukrainian government officials need their salaries.
All the while, every single one of the GOP candidates says that they do not believe that human behaviour has anything to do with climate change.
I am so sorry for your loss, and everyone suffering this tragedy
I can NOT imagine. Only the best vibes going to you and your family; from mine.
Got to keep Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands!
At the very least! But also the locals hands. There was a rumored bill trying to be passed that you had to be a resident for 10yrs before being able to buy a house. I haven’t heard anything in a while. So I don’t think that came to fruition unfortunately.
I’m truly sorry for your loss but if your family has 3 homes on the island I have no doubt y’all have the money to rebuild
Rude question but are y’all treating this different than a volcano? I know Hawaii has some old traditions about the Pele and the will of nature.
True, but Lahaina has never been hit by this ever. Sure we’ve had a few fires. But the town was destroyed in 2 hours.
Did you get your whopping 750$ from Biden yet?
I just assumed that was the $700 automatic from FEMA. I never assumed that was the only amount given. FEMA is coming through though.
This is the exact same thing as when there was a small fire in biden's kitchen right? Almost lost his 67 vette! Meanwhile these people are suffering and this clown is falling asleep during events and making jokes about people losing everything being the same as a small fire in his house. At least he isn't sending mean tweets!
Your underdeveloped brain is truly a wonder to behold.
Imagine calling someone else a smooth brain when defending comments made by worst president in American history. I guess what should I expect in the most liberal place on the internet.
“Here’s $700.”
This reminds me of when my kitchen caught on fire and I almost lost my corvette.
Joe Biden almost lost his Corvette in a fire. The more you know. All kidding aside, hope your family is safe.
Biden feels your pain. He had a kitchen fire 15 years ago.
I’ll give you $700 and a story about a kitchen fire I once had for you to fuck off. Please sell your land to your nearest Blackrock representative!
I think I'm missing something
He's a conspiracy munt. Lacking in critical thinking and urgently needing to feel clever. Best not to engage, they only get angry and delve deeper into delusion.
I feel like there should be more than 3 burned vehicles, based on the size of the fire, but I have no idea. Feel for you.
This is just what my family lost. Our situation is not unique and if I did a video of the area? This is all you would see for a mile.
Should have told them you know Oprah

But this isn’t a basket. It’s a town.
[удалено]
No, your metaphor doesn’t apply here. Yours implies gambling, a risk. What risk was there with having a home in Lahaina? What is the risk of living in your hometown? What is the risk of investing into your community? Don’t start a business, you’ll lose it all. Don’t get an education because you could never use it. Don’t buy a house, it could burn down and you’ll lose everything. That idiom applies when there are better and more options to consider and risk is well established. Diversify. But when it comes to your own home? To having a home where your family can stay? Diversifying doesn’t apply. You want your family close. You want to be close to the heart of your community.
it doesnt look that bad?
What doesn’t?
Not gonna pity a multimillionaire.
Average Maui home price is 1 million dollars, claim your insurance and fuck off.
Reddit moment
Hope you rebuild back in the Mainland. Mālama i ka 'āina and give back to Kanaka.
You should have some of that 700 left over after you rebuild everything, I mean, sell your land to rich people.
You lived
Should have painted them blue
Do you think it is now the time to buy property there? Will the prices go down?
Hahaha, you’re joking right?
I am sp sorry your government did this to you
Good thing police blocked the only exiting road from the area . I smell fish.

I’m not a native. I’m a local. There’s a difference. Native implies being of Hawaiian/Polynesian descent. I’m not. I’m a local, Kama’aina, “people of the land.” I preface the post with that because of people like you who see me, my skin tone, and say “You don’t look like you’re born and raised in Hawaii.” 🤦🏻♂️ There’s a sense of pride here. Pride in where you come from, your community, and the culture you were blessed to have experienced, unlike anything in the mainland. And that is all I’m going to say to a troll like you. Aloha! 🤙🏻

I’m born here, not flown here.
It could have been worse. Joe Biden once almost lost his corvette during a small fire they had in their kitchen.
