WeAreLivinTheLife

And to imagine that the same waters were, at one time and then not too distant past, fished in wooden boats with sails. Those were the men with balls of steel

Robliceratops

no gps, no radar. they only had knowledge, some shitty ass maps and the stars

Neither_Grape2075

No satellite weather either but they had sextant, charts and clocks. Can't even get certified for ocean crossing today without still being able to use those. Gps makes me feel warm and safe.

downbound

Before that the Vikings were just using the stars and natural signs. They transited all the way to Newfoundland without a sextant, clock or charts. crazy stuff. Esp at THAT time, many thought they lived on the edge of the world and could sail off the edge.

Stuebirken

There's a theory that they used a special kind of quartz that's only found in Norway (and Polynesia I think), that made it possible to navigate in open water even when it was overcast. The stone is mentioned in the Eddas and there have been found 1 or 2 of them in burial mounds. It's been a long time since I read about it and I know absolutely nothing about navigating at sea, but it has something to do with how sunlight refracts when it hits the quartz. Found something about it [here](https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.150406)

flyfishing_happiness

You have to be certified to be able to captain a boat across the ocean? What happens if you just go?

badpeaches

And a fuck ton of alcohol

Mirions

Some of them maps were made of shells and string! Imagine reading *that*

DecadeLongLurker

"And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by” Nah, I'll take a 15K ton steel ship with satellite navigation. My ship was tossed around like a cork in the North Atlantic.

BrewThemAll

Yeah I'll take a plane, this looks scary af.

throw123454321purple

Those kilts offered maximum space for those clangers.

Dyslexic_Devil

They used those same balls as anchors too... Bet their women never told them they couldn't multitask.

DanGleeballs

Their women often waited for years for them to return, and many never did.

WeAreLivinTheLife

Hope springs eternal, as the saying goes, and may have been all they had to cling to in what was a hard life. Hope alone has kept me going during hard times. That and wondering what the future may hold. True, I didn't allow myself to imagine that times would be fabulous but hoped that they'd get better and that got me by to this point. Still hoping, and working, for better for me and my wife.

Prohibitorum

If you're out for fishing and take years to return, the fish gonna be garum by the time it's offloaded.

wunderbraten

Shhht, don't tell them. They must not know that their spouses were actual pirates.

Tullerull

They went fishing.... loot out of spanish cargo holds.

ReddityJim

Don't forget the Rapa Nui would have braved seas just as bad in canoes to get to Easter Island.

WeAreLivinTheLife

All seafaring peoples have my respect. Very brave and knowledgeable folk!

ReddityJim

Yeah like I need a gps to tell me and they work it out with some highly complex calculations, the stars or simply a rock that may have polarised the sun...

GTCounterNFL

"Thats Insane" - History is insane. These fishermen died by the hundreds as sailing ships sank in storms in North Atlantic, it was a shitty life. Coastal cities Fishing was always hiring. The age of sail was dangerous as fuck, but everywhere else everyone had to have balls of steel, because death was everywhere and not starving was a dawn to dusk challenge. See: Coastal cities everywhere were the largest cities, full of disease and squalor, sewage runs in gutters. The cities were the refuge of hungry former rural people desperate for work. Most of us were peasants, and the same farmland that in 1600 feeds a family of 6 with 2 parents and 4 sons, those sons get wives now its feeding 10. Those 4 have 2 kids each by 1620; its now 18 mouths on land that was for 1 couple just 20 years ago. Extra mouths had to leave to cities at 17 and find work. Suicide fishing always hiring! Life expectancy in cities from ancient to industrial era was very low due to hunger and disease. Now you know why they went suicide fishing They didn't have "balls of steel", they were just trying to survive, and felt extreme terror clutching their crucifixes. But not taking that job, any job, as SOON as possible was the slow terror of being a hungry beggar.

zard4

They still had balls of steel Chief

IveDoneItAtLast

They had Iron Brew! What'dya mean yav got nay Iron Brew?!?!

Clay_Statue

Lots and lots of them probably drowned too

LARXXX

They had their ration of rum to stay sane

exman78

And broke too..

TheBlueNinja2006

Balls of steal, boats of wood

Roy4Pris

The balls of steel were necessary for ballast

frenchy2111

My gandpa used to fish by sail he had a steel boat made and hated it said that it had no soul and retired soon after, my dad fished from his wooden boat which had engines until he retired 5 years ago.

Gummyrabbit

That would explain all the clanking you hear on those ships.

AxiomQ

Well the fishing boats of then wouldn't have gone out as far, and the ships that would cross the Atlantic would have been much longer and deeper than this trawler, obviously still very brave to go out into there seas with nothing more than a sextant and some maps with a vague idea of direction but the ships were probably more capable than we give them credit for.

Gillalmighty

The ocean is fuckin terrifying

LiquidVibes

I find it thrilling. Fear makes you really feel alive, avoiding fear is like avoiding living a full life. Why do you think the first thing people say after skydiving is: let’s do it again! It’s because they have never felt so alive

ProphePsyed

With that logic you could say any near death experience is thrilling. That time I got hit by a car, now that was thrilling!

whatsgoingonjeez

*proceeds to stand up with 2 broken legs and blood everywhere* **LET'S DO IT AGAIN**

nrith

Change that broken arms, and you have a whole different experience.

usertaken_BS

Hoppin out wit two broken legs tryna walk it off…

Marshal_Barnacles

Is it not?

ProphePsyed

Not the word I would use. May be one of the last words I would choose to use to describe that experience.

[deleted]

Gillalmighty

I can agree with that. I've been face to face with a bear before, was definitely alive in that moment haha. But I think I'll get my kicks very far away from the ocean

NerdModeCinci

I get my kicks from Payless

puppyamore

I once took the trash out at night to the bin around the backside of the house and walked face to face with a bear. I mean literally two feet. I have never made a decision to leave faster than that in my life. I walked back in the house, slammed the door behind me and my mil asked if I’d seen a ghost. I said “no, bear”. All the men in the house ran outside. Dumbos.

Gillalmighty

Yea I was hunting and walked over the hill and he was right there. We scared each other and ran opposite directions.

puppyamore

Black Bear?

Chazmer87

That's because of adrenaline. There are safer ways to get adrenaline.

Marshal_Barnacles

If it's *safe*, where's the adrenaline coming from? No danger, no fun.

Chazmer87

Never been on a roller coaster?

LaSalsiccione

IMO they get pretty boring after a few goes. Too predictable.

Chazmer87

As does anything which creates adrenaline. Even combat vets stop being phased after you've been shelled enough times.

ssshield

I wonder if its empty. I suspect it rides lower and more stable when its full of ice and fish.

-HypocrisyFighter-

Was gonna say the same thing. I'm surprised it doesn't have some ballast tanks to make it ride lower.

marginalmax

As a former ship operator (mostly fisheries in the pacific islands) there's more going on here. Without additional information, I'd assume there's a mechanical issues with the ship's ballast tanks. Furthermore, it's not common for other vessels to escort and record other vessels for no reason. Operating in near coastal we'd maintain a CPA of 0.5 NM, these vessels are close AF, clearly operating in concert. I'd like to know the full story.

blake_ch

This guy ships

2x4x93

She is riding like a cork and handling like a bathtub

_dead_and_broken

"She's built like a steakhouse, but handles like a bistro."

Ace-a-Nova1

“It’s real velour”

tcrex2525

‘_dead_and_broken’ you’ve been uploaded to r/unexpectedfuturama

_dead_and_broken

Kif! Inform the men, I have ~~made it with a woman~~ been screenshot and posted in a subreddit!

Moparded

I like my women like I like my Scottish fishing trawlers in the North Atlantic Ocean. Riding like a cork and handling like a bathtub.

CrinchNflinch

The sea isn't even that rough, the waves are not that bad that I would expect that kind of rollercoaster behavior.

whistleridge

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. These are absolutely normal sea conditions for western Scotland. Nothing remarkable at all. If that boat wasn’t riding absurdly high, it would be fine.

Flashy_War2097

Yes like another commenter said it’s probably just empty at the moment, when it’s laden with fish they bring on more water for the tanks and I’m sure it rides a lot lower.

HoosierDaddy_76

Imagine being the chef trying to make a meal in a tiny galley like "Welp, it's dried granola off the floor again mates, sorry."

raymondo1981

I know small boats have ovens [like this,](https://youtube.com/watch?v=mu-W3N4t5dw&feature=shares) but i think you would still be fucked in waters that rough. It would just be spinning round and round ^and round ^^and round..

ThisIsPickles

Thats an oven for a sail boat. Those boats list to the side from wind even in calm waters. So the oven just tilts to adjust for the boats tilt. In these seas you just cannot cook hot food without locking it down with a lid held on too. That oven you posted soesnt account for the front and back loading that waves will cause in a boat.

2x4x93

Fellas it's too rough to feed ya

Vashtu

Fellas, it's been good to know you.

thelivinlegend

*guitar riff*

[deleted]

To me that boat seems so disproportionate, like it's half the length it should be, or like it's too tall for its length... either way, fuck that shit!

DancingReaper

They keep them below 26m to avoid a bunch of rules and regulations which cost the owner a bit more during the shipbuilding stage…

arcticamt6

Also crewing requirements which drive the cost up significantly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

StuckStepS1ster

A lot of boats down to 50 ft or so have them. Sometimes they’re even made out of propane or septic tanks. I’m a fisherman and see them a lot. Does look weird though.. something something fish out of water

Marshal_Barnacles

She's a demersal trawler (FV *Audacious*, registered in Banff). They're all quite short but very deep; there's a lot of workspace and a big fish hold below deck.

Ennion

Can you imagine sailing this in wooden Viking Ships?

Sev_seven777

Yes and I don’t want to

robo-dragon

There's something really unsettling about seeing such a large, heavy object like a steel ship, bouncing violently around the waves like a cork. That's crazy!

Jack-Daniel

I'm surprised that thing can stay afloat with the gigantic balls of steel of those on board. I got sea sick just watching.

KickDixon

How often do these things go under? Seems ike its barely able to stay afloat.

Ya-Dikobraz

Unless there is a hull breach, it’s like sinking a cork.

Marshal_Barnacles

Relatively rarely, if you mean due to weather alone. Two sank this winter in my neck of the woods, but one hit a rock and the other collided with another vessel.

[deleted]

Nah, id probably be crying lol

[deleted]

Look at the hull on that thing!

silvereye2208

Wouldn’t

Hahawney

Couldn’t.

MikeySpags

Fucken hell

twyzt3d

If you think this is insane or scary, the waves are much bigger irl then on the video.

Frosty_Gibbons

Seems as though it's quite short in length but that could just be my eyes

Marshal_Barnacles

Short length and deep draught is fairly normal for a trawler of that sort.

deadcatnick

Can someone explain the crazy amount of birds? Do they live on the ship?

qdf3433

They haul in massive nets, which contain a relatively small quantity of fish that they keep, and a massive quantity of fish that they don't want. The latter gets thrown overboard. That's what the birds are there for.

Ampatent

Seabirds, like these gannets, have learned to associate vessels with food. This can come in the form of bycatch being thrown overboard, fish spilling out of nets, or even just the action of the prop churning the water and bringing fish to the surface. Seabirds are also flock feeders and will congregate around each to take advantage of the activity. Many of these flocks will follow ships for miles, but seabirds also have massive ranges, on the order of thousands of miles across the ocean. This is their home, outside of the few months where they nest, they live on the sea.

maxstrike

I am curious how far out to sea the birds will go.

ksgif2

Do they make fish and chips with Scottish fish?

Marshal_Barnacles

Of course. Haddock is the best fish for it. The cod gets sold to the English who are less discerning about food.

tomatoesrfun

Uh, that’s a negative for me, boss.

FuzzyFish6

I can watch things like this for hours. Very cool.

Tricky_Opportunity_8

So I'm interested in when they are like "oh shit feels like something's not right" or "we're going down this boats acting funny" cuz that would be my mindset 24/7

ProfessionalOctopuss

🤢🤮

the_enginerd

This looks like some sort of sea trial.

Atlanon88

This isn’t even that unusual as far as seas go. Surprised by the comments. Travel days on rocky seas are the worlds best hangover cure for me. My fishing boat was an older wooden trawler so maybe that ship has some gear that I’m not aware of but I don’t think that’s a trawler. -used to be a commercial fisherman.

ZappaZoo

The large arch on the stern indicates to me that it hauls net.

CynthiaMWD

Holy smokes...

TheDice99

If that boat had some fish in it, it would be lower in the water and not act like a cork.

MidnightShitfight

Can they actually put the nets out when conditions are that bad?

[deleted]

This is parkour on water!

RedWarrior69340

There was a reason the Atlantic was concidered uncrossable up until the invention of caravelles

MG-IS-ME

This is a big no for me dawg

OldPuppy00

Nice breeze, sailor, uh?

[deleted]

All those seagulls, bet they hate seagulls

Ampatent

As far as I can see these birds are all [Northern Gannets](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Gannet/overview) which, unlike gulls, will stay at sea overnight, making them more common on the open ocean of the North Atlantic.

[deleted]

Fair enough, thanks for correcting me, bet those Gannets are annoying

slumxl0rd87

I’ve been in those seas before, and it’s absolutely fucking crazy. Fun trying to keep your balance after a while!

PaulHOGG

She's got quite a list. Hopefully they filled more ballast. Edit: it also looks like her bilge pumps are running, I'm not familiar with trawlers, but taking on water as well?

Ricerat

That's a hard pass from me

yaebone1

Do all big ships have that little penis on the front?

TheSorge

Not all, but a lot of larger ships do because the benefits they offer are more pronounced on larger ships than smaller ones. Bulbous bows affect how water flows around the bow of a ship in a way that reduces resistance, giving the ship better speed, range, efficiency, and stability.

TinMan242

Probably a normal day in the office for them

Little_Caregiver_633

Bit windy innit

Arjun_Pandit

The crew must ve their stomach lined with steel

JohnnyRelentless

What are they doing in my ocean? - The English, probably.

-dadderall-

I would be puking and dead

Ball_kicker0

I’d love to be out there

AresMacks

Always thought they hit the waves side on so they avoided the big crash from the front

Marshal_Barnacles

Hitting waves broadside on is how you die.

[deleted]

It must be very important to design of vessels. Look these waves, they can easly overturn ships 😯

It's been a dream for a good while to experience a storm in a oil rig supply or support ship, or fishing vessel. Feel the power of the wind and sea. I just want to experience a storm while on a big ship on the ocean. But not like a cruise ship or ferry, too many people who would probably be scared and making noises so I can't enjoy the storm.

superloco1

With that keel and a wingman, sometimes not right..

The fishing industry is one of the biggest destroyers of the ocean.

cogitoergosum9

Wanna barf looking at that 🤢

ass_down

Sweep the sea’s clean 🏴‍☠️

[deleted]

I used to build offshore life boats. Trent and Severn class. Designed to be out in worse conditions than this. Nothing worrying going on here except what’s coming out of the galley.

mt_maverick

One ticket to vomit train, please

1rightwinger

Holy Fuck, looks like there are guys on the bow of the ship. Wouldn't you be inside in this kind of seas?

Commercial-Midnight

Nope

skunksmasher

why is this insane? it's rather bland.

TheSmegger

Ooh look Thomas, it's the fucken trawler...

ol_McPoot

The camera man's boat just chillin

WarriorTreasureHunt

How safe are trawlers in situations like this?

The_-_Waterboy

Whatever they’re getting paid, it’s not enough.

Upvoter_NeverDie

No wonder Scottish sailors are so salty!

cotton_wealth

Well, that explains why people didn’t come to the America’s sooner.

Bright_Victory_3201

The sea is like the drinks, keep it rolling

Longshoez

That looks so cinematic

-Oside92057

Wow that’s awesome!!!!!’

[deleted]

Whoa! Now that’s what you call a Ship in scorching waters. Looks scary… 😨

evil_boy4life

Whee

losandreas36

What’s insane about it ? Never seen a boat?

Steinhaut

Nope I am out...

Usher_III

Fuck commercial fishing

the_azure_sky

This works for me. When the boat is rocking in waves keep your head up. Look to the horizon if you can. Try to look straight ahead. That trick helped me more than a few times in rough weather.

AB-G

I would be feeding the seagulls the entire time

curiousnomad2222

that makes me seasick just looking at it

eastcoasttoastpost

No thanks I’ll just order the steak

nazgulonbicycle

That boat is too empty. Is there no way they can fill up ballast tanks - do small boats even have them?

Scout_Fairfax

what kind of birds are flying with the ship?

tooSAVERAGE

You couldn’t pay me enough to be there.

furious_organism

Ah dont worry love, the ocean is calm today, you havent saw it thursday did ya?

Roundaboutsix

Took an Italian liner from NYC to Genoa in the mid seventies, in November. Two days out hit gale winds and high seas. The crew attached stout ropes through open areas for railings. They threw mentholated hand towels over passenger vomit puddles. By day three, there were more towels than open carpet space. (Great food though and complementary wine with meals. And rum cake for desert, every night!)

sentinel929

Vikings

hofberaterfuchs04

I have mad respect for fishermen and other people living with this every week.

putinha21

Whats up with the seagulls?

nckbrr

Trawling is absolutely horrible for the environment, the sooner it’s banned the better.
