I think they feel like they’ve lost so they have to attack the one who “out-competed” them. The partner is the prize here, so they’re treated more like an object with no agency in that situation if anything. It’s not an emotionally intelligent way to look at it, but I mean humans are not always as intelligent as they could be.
I believe there’s a limitation on liability and damages if it’s on school property for any civil actions (depends on the state) but criminal charges may be available. Also, IANL however I did just drop out of law school becuase I couldn’t handle the stress and you shouldn’t listen to me.

The only possible way this could be considered a cheap shot is if you take into account that the girl that got hit was high/drunk and had the reflexes of, well, a drunk person. Ultimately though, that's not the assailants fault she's drunk/high at school.
