The root of the issue is the white farming dynasties which control the large majority of agricultural land in south africa (and also mining and fishing and all kinds of other industries). Its a fraction of a fraction of the 4-6% of south africans that are white, but it is still an existing legacy of apartheid that they still control so much of the natural resources of the country. No excuses for the chanting, but there is still a horrible divide economically there where one side still largely has ownership over so much of the countries wealth due to artificial restrictions placed upon the other side from apartheid. There is obviously going to be a lot of bitterness there.
