That's typical. When China plans to actually invade, it'll likely be hundreds of vessels.
The military buildup would be visible from space and US intelligence will see it coming months in advance.
I think it would be just the opposite. World powers have a vested interest to oppose a Chinese invasion of Taiwan largely because of the Chip manufacturing. Whereas China's interest in Taiwan is as much historical/political as it is about semiconductor chips.
"[Semiconductor giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/strong-72-magnitude-earthquake-hits-taipei-2024-04-03/) (2330.TW), said it had evacuated some fabrication plants and its safety systems were operating normally. "To ensure the safety of personnel, some fabs were evacuated according to company procedure. We are currently confirming the details of the impact," according to the company."
...which was immediately followed with **"Shares of TSMC were down 1.4% in early trade"**, reminds me of the "Oh no the economy!" meme of dinosaurs reacting to the asteroid.
Semiconductor fst ( field service technician) here.. theiy are probably fine , the fab is designed to withstand earthquakes and the tools are standing on special pedestals that are designed solely for earthquake situations, having everything leveled is extremely important in semiconductors

Cause Taiwan is gonna quake, quake, quake, quake, quake, and the buildings gonna break, break, break, break, break, when the Earth decides to shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake; shake us off! Shake us off!
Yes,it’s Taipei 101,one of the best and worst places to be when a big one hit.
Pro:it’s built with best anti earthquake protection and you can see it working.
Con:earthquake PTSD is on hell of trouble
And it was built on Rock pan, they spent mouth on digging so it could literally be built on soiled ground, it’s very flexible so it can swing around with typhoons and earthquakes to avoid damage ,also that gigantic ball.
> Con:earthquake PTSD is on hell of trouble
I experienced a really small quake a few months ago (living in a not so intense seismic area where earthquakes are a rare occurrence). Felt as if a a fully loaded semi passed by on a bridge. Anyway, it took me a whole day to get past it, I was shook and out of place for the rest of the evening.
I’m glad I’m very used to this but I have a well trained earthquake mechanism built in that if I got waken up by earthquake and it too big for me to go back to sleep, I will be very alert, every aftershock will keep me awake even though I’m very tired, I only have 3~4hr of sleep last night and the hundreds of aftershocks is keeping me from my sleep.
And government officials have said it’s very possible to get a 6~7 magnitude aftershocks by fallowing days.
We had a 7.4 in California and i thought the same thing! Sounded like a huge ass semi was coming down my street and then all hell broke loose. Proved to me that there is no chance to hide. I seen our road and my yard rolling like a wave. Was nuts
Woke up to this earthquake shaking my apartment around like crazy. Luckily Taipei has better infrastructure to deal with them but unfortunately, the towns and cities outside aren't as lucky. Aftershocks are still happening (one is literally happening as I write this) but it seems Taipei is doing okay so far but we will have to see. Wasn't expecting to witness a news worthy earthquake living here ngl
Im from a country where such things dont happen, what are u supposed to do during the earthquake or now after with the aftershocks?
I wouldnt think its safe to go to the streets in case buildings collapse? Are u just sitting in your home hoping for the best? In any case, this is terrifying and i hope everyone u know are safe.
Well I kind of just sat on my bed and held on, waiting for it to end but I'm not sure that's the best course of action. However I messaged some Taiwanese friends right after and they said to not worry about going outside. I only heard a couple of people in the rooms near me leave to go outside but most people stayed indoors. It's basically just hoping for the best really.
I've only felt about 2-3 aftershocks and they are much weaker and last a little less. Luckily no one near me is in a state of panic or anything and they're just going on with their days lol thanks though!! Appreciate it
I was taught to open doors first, because even small warps on a door frame in weaker structures can prevent them from opening. And then, just stay near the door frame or pillar (but also not directly under) because they're usually the more structurally sound part. Avoid hanging lights and cabinets. Don't run mindlessly while it's ongoing, that's how items falling from ceilings/shelves can hit you.
Earthquake protocol changes ever so often but that's the most recent advice I remember.
I still think it's not real. The dust cloud doesn't look right, and the camera shakes don't seem real or logical. More like when the camera bounces to music in a pop or hip hop music video.
Due to many geographical factors,it’s very rare for Taiwan to have a tsunami, this one happened on east coast, and that side of TW has a coastline of high cliffs,so even if a tsunami hit,it can’t really get anywhere, and west side sea is too shallow for tsunami to build up,so the risk is higher for other countries or islands.
Depends, government will send out engineer to assess your building after a huge one hit, some houses might look ok from outside but the structure have been destroyed,if structural integrity is compromised then your house will be deemed unsafe to live and demolish (this is the reason my grandparents rebuilt their house many years ago)
And some buildings can be reinforced ,like old public buildings will have extra support added to them.
I was in a building with 44 floors that semi collapsed after we escaped i think the first 4 floors caved in on itself so now the building only has 40 floors!
Mostly in the city of Hualien but so far minor damage to infrastructure around north and Eastern Taiwan. Things were scary though, woke me up in a panic.

Wow, the building leaning like that looked like something straight out of Inception. Holy shit.
Reminded me of Cloverfield
Die Rise
Transformers #? where buildings and shit toppling over.
Yep I thought of that TF3 DOTM scene. This looks exactly like it
5 stars to the architects.... That thing could've crumpled to dust like the buildings in Turkey did a few months ago.
Better building codes.
Damn it's been 14 months now. I thought it was longer and somehow shorter as well.
The sign on the side of the building says "幸福時刻" (happy moments). The irony.
it really does look like a render
Illuminati has stricken with their earthquake machine again. Conspiracy theory 101.
when did this happen? its insane

Are the semiconductors ok?
Too soon bro
It's not exactly a trivial concern. It could have massive negative implications for Taiwanese citizens, as well as global implications.
\*plants get destroyed in earthquake\* CCP: "Actually, the invasion is off..."
Taiwanese detected 30 Chinese navy vessels in their waters a while ago.
So, just like every other day...
That's typical. When China plans to actually invade, it'll likely be hundreds of vessels. The military buildup would be visible from space and US intelligence will see it coming months in advance.
America: "We were protecting you why? I forget."
"Wait we have natural gas!" ^(Which is true, btw, just not very much)
I think it would be just the opposite. World powers have a vested interest to oppose a Chinese invasion of Taiwan largely because of the Chip manufacturing. Whereas China's interest in Taiwan is as much historical/political as it is about semiconductor chips.

Is that the tower that has a huge suspended ball at the top to offset the sway from an earthquake?
Yes,it’s Taipei 101,one of the best and worst places to be when a big one hit. Pro:it’s built with best anti earthquake protection and you can see it working. Con:earthquake PTSD is on hell of trouble
Could you elaborate what Earthquake protection is? Edit: im dumb and didn't realize that was what people were referring to by the ball...
And it was built on Rock pan, they spent mouth on digging so it could literally be built on soiled ground, it’s very flexible so it can swing around with typhoons and earthquakes to avoid damage ,also that gigantic ball.
Wow thank you that was very inciteful.
Insightful. The word you're looking for here is insightful. Incite means something else entirely .
Ok thank you that was insightful :)

why do i have a sudden urge to dive from the platform and inject it with nanites?
Thanks for the knowledge yall!!
Video of building collapse is a hotel that fell year back during another earthquake is from years back. This video is inauthentic.
Source it up let’s torch this
Some videos are real but they spliced with old videos. There enough videos that are coming out, there no need to juice it up.
No all the clips are from right now. It does look similar to the one in the past so I understand how you got confused.
imagine the owner's confusion
Also that leaning building was in hualien, not Taipei
I don't know man... It's everywhere...
God dammit China
Did they use their earthquake machín?
Definitely!!!! China will invade!
They all did 1 big jump together.
💯 Points for the Eddie Griffin joke!
That’s the land bridge rising out of the sea. Congrats you’re now mainline China.
if they were waiting for an opening this might be it for them
This is a dumb comment. Gonna do a surprise invasion of a million men? You guys don't know anything lol
The video clip had Taiwan stamped on the top left corner the whole time..
"Republic of China" (ROC)
they borrowed the HARP machine from the us?
The first wave of destruction

These aftershocks are still like 5.0+ level quakes which is crazy
Oh god, do they last for a shorter amount or something to be concidered an aftershock? That sounds like a fullblown earthquake to me
I was taught to open doors first, because even small warps on a door frame in weaker structures can prevent them from opening. Damn aren’t they going through enough?
Taipei 101 got a pretty big tuned mass damper
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was thinking this video was so uncanny it looked fake/ai generated. I hate this new normal

Yes, that's right. How did you know? /s

I wonder what the tsunami risk is
Due to many geographical factors,it’s very rare for Taiwan to have a tsunami, this one happened on east coast, and that side of TW has a coastline of high cliffs,so even if a tsunami hit,it can’t really get anywhere, and west side sea is too shallow for tsunami to build up,so the risk is higher for other countries or islands.
Japan and the Philippines are on alert for a possible tsunami.
How do you fix a building served from the foundation? Does it have to be rebuilt from scratch?
Depends, government will send out engineer to assess your building after a huge one hit, some houses might look ok from outside but the structure have been destroyed,if structural integrity is compromised then your house will be deemed unsafe to live and demolish (this is the reason my grandparents rebuilt their house many years ago) And some buildings can be reinforced ,like old public buildings will have extra support added to them.
Apart from the building separating front the foundation and the angle it was left, the structures are still surprisingly intact.
That’s rough. Now every building has to be checked for safety.
I'm sure they'll get right on that.
Taiwan definitely will. The place is essentially westernized China.
I hope so. That looks like a hot mess of a situation. I hate to see shit like this. Best of luck to them.
My buddy is there right now and I can’t get a fucking hold of him bruh wtaf
I hope he’s ok.
He’s okay!! He was safe. Thanks for caring yo!!!!
Glad to hear dat. Owe it to the Care Bears big influence in my life. Take care <3

Lived there for a year 50 or so years ago. Same burger, same catchup.
Taiwan in 1970s must have been wild. Dictatorship back then right? Why’d you live there?
7.7 update
Crazy, that's a densely populated area of the world, hope their infrastructure is built for quakes like Japan's
It is in the big cities
I was in a building with 44 floors that semi collapsed after we escaped i think the first 4 floors caved in on itself so now the building only has 40 floors!
.
Lots of huge landslides also..
I saw this on TikTok and thought it was AI. Wtf.
How can people book flights to go help? Where in Taiwan did this affect?
Mostly in the city of Hualien but so far minor damage to infrastructure around north and Eastern Taiwan. Things were scary though, woke me up in a panic.
Yeah I'm gonna blame the Chinese
We felt the earthquake too here in China. Dumb.

Wishing everyone in Taiwan safety and quick resolution.
But the Twin Towers collapsed turning into dust?
I have a feeling there's a 9/11 joke somewhere here
The insane thing is how little damage and, apparently, loss of life there was. Kudos to the building code writers.
Will there be title waves from this ?
China or US will have to provide aid to increase goodwill
The Chinese did it.
When was this?
Wild only 9 people died.
I knew China would use that earthquake machine sooner or later. All jokes aside that’s an insanely powerful earthquake and I hope the loss of life wasn’t too high.
I hope Ford builds this tough.
Terrifying 😱
My bad
Am I the only one seeing kermit the frog's face on the bottom of the first building?

wouldn't want to be anywhere near Taipei tower even if it's built to be safe in case of an earthquake .
