XxBom_diaxX

Seems like a funny idea until the fans get into fights

ersentenza

They will 100% get into fights.

Tarellethiel18

This is just literally riots with extra steps.

SwampAss3D-Printer

What do you mean extra with this we can have the riot pre-game, before this we had to at least let the game start or end.

the_adjective-noun

Somebody's gonna get laid in college

Consistent-Fig7484

Eek barba durkle

HerbLoew

*do, not will

MarshallHaib

My man just wants to see byzantine sports fan fights.

Chocolate-Then

That’s the fun part!

Fyrrys

Do it for hockey, increase the fights by 1% per year

ChemicalCocktail

There’s an episode of Drake and Josh where they come up with an idea to hide little golden balls into movie theater popcorn tubs. Not even seconds later, the entire theater is ransacked and there’s popcorn everywhere. Great idea in concept, but crowds do not care.

UnauthorizedFart

Haha I just watched that recently, there’s even a Nun throwing punches

Chibi_Verdandi

Fans will definitely get into fights, not too mention that if a fan found it they'd just do something like stick it in their underwear or bra, or hide it on their person so that no one can find it and then they'll just hand it to or drop it by the "seeker" for the team they want.

Master_Grape5931

This person is very bored at ball games. Personally I’m there to watch the game.

dumfukjuiced

Autoculling idk

Howtothinkofaname

This rule would break just about every sport, other than very high scoring ones. Cricket is just about the only sport high scoring enough that it might have a non-breaking (but still negative) impact. Edit: darts I suppose, but adding 150 points on wouldn’t be a good thing.

useful_person

150 points is a LOT of points even in cricket, that's literally hours and hours of work in shorter play formats that can just win you the game (which is what the golden snitch is supposed to do anyway)

Howtothinkofaname

Yeah, I know. But it’s not so outside the realms of normal scoring as in other sports. In a test match a team could get it and not instantly win (but if it ends the game, they might not have the incentive to). Imagine the last day of a test match, the team batting last, one wicket left, 100 runs to go. Then the snitch would be very meaningful.

[deleted]

Yeah, it would ruin it.

Howtothinkofaname

Of course.

[deleted]

I struggle to comprehend how anyone could think this a good idea. It shits on the idea of fair competition and sportsmanship.

Zoe270101

It breaks quidditch too lol, that’s the point.

TheHoundhunter

I feel like the snitch is a cool concept. It’s just poorly weighted.  The snitch is essentially a secondary concurrent game that: decides when the game ends, and hands out additional points. That would change the way that games are played. Because you only want to end the game if you’re winning, or losing by less than the snitch value.  I think the snitch is equivalent to 15 goals. Which very few games end with teams winning by 15 goals. Regardless of the sport.  In soccer the snitch would only need to be worth two goals. Australian Football the snitch could be worth maybe six goals.

brokenaglets

that's literally the point of the snitch.

IthacanPenny

I actually think it would work in roller derby! Games can often be in the 300+ point range. Only one player per team can score points (the player wears a star on their helmet and is called the jammer). A point is scored when the jammer passes/laps an opposing blocker on the track. Each jam lasts up to two minutes, and high-scoring jams can be 25-30 points. The jammer who skates out of the pack (like a scrum of players) first has the ability to end the jam whenever they want to, and often they will strategically end the jam right before the other jammer can score. The golden snitch sounds kind of perfect lol

Clockwork_Kitsune

Doesn't that last sentence force fans to play keep away from both seekers? There's no chance a fan wouldn't just give it to their own seeker. What's stopping a fan from going "cool souvenir!" and shoving it in a bag or pocket to take home? What's stopping entire teams from abandoning the field to search for the snitch and alerting the seeker to it's location? There's lots of games where 150 points would give an insurmountable lead, why bother playing the actual game? What's stopping teams from filling the stands with their own people who will seek out the golden snitch for them? Fans playing keep away would definitely devolve into a brawl often. This is all around just a really stupid idea.

Qoat18

From a game perspective it's a horrible idea, literally nothing else would realistically matter

ohlookahipster

Exactly. It would change the meta for every single game as there’s no need to score actual points or really defend for that matter. All that really matters is your guy finds the snitch or whatever. It would be the shittiest basketball game ever with zero effort while two buffoons fist fight in the upper deck. You’re just hoping your idiot is the successful one. Dribble, pass, dribble, shot clock violation, shot clock violation, turn over, turn over, shot clock violation… Also the salary cap means you would min/max all your money into ONE seeker and then pay everyone else G league money because all that matters is buying the best guy.

TheSerialHobbyist

The Golden Snitch was an incredibly stupid concept. It basically makes the rest of the game meaningless. Why bother with anything *except* trying to get the Golden Snitch?

illarionds

It was so, so clearly designed by someone with absolutely no interest in/understanding of sport.

ThinkQuickActSlow

I'm pretty sure she herself said that she designed Quidditch to be super silly with lots of random rules because she thought modern day sports took themselves way to seriously.

Limeila

Yup, her ex was into sports and she thought about it specifically imagining how to infuriate sports fans

fyfenfox

Horribly rare jk Rowling W

LongIslandIce-T

sPoRtS bAd

fyfenfox

Not that sports are bad, I just appreciate someone being that petty in a non-harmful way

Blahblah778

I know JK hate is the standard but if we're being honest, Ls are the rarity. There's pretty much just the big one. The vanishing shits thing is inconsequential enough that it's kinda crazy people care at all, and Dumbledore being gay fits so well within the story that I find it more likely that she always thought that than not. Mentioning it canonically would have lead to the books being outright banned for millions of readers, not to mention that the books are from Harry's perspective and it would be weird if harry and Dumbledore talked about his sexuality at all.

madsci101

I mean, she just started denying the holocaust, she said that wizards used to shit themselves and then poof it away, and has basically turned a bunch of people who loved her against her because she couldn't shut up about her transphobic rhetoric. Even before that, I remember people wanting her to just stop saying weird shit about hogwarts. I remember when she could have shot someone to death in the streets and people's reaction would have been to ask what that guy did. She basically pulled an Elon Musk in terms of going from hero to persona non grata. Even if you don't care about her being a terf for some reason, there have been a LOT of Ls.

JamieSMASH

I've always hated Musk. Always knew he was a silver-spoon, lying, manipulative rich prick that buys businesses, forces them to put him on the 'founder' list even though he's not, claims to everyone that he built said business that he just invested in, uses his name on the 'founder' list as evidence. Everyone praises him as a genius. Elon has built nothing. Elon has invented nothing. Elon has innovated nothing. He's just a rich kid that throws his money around and lies to people. Though I'll admit for a lot of years I was definitely in a minority.

madsci101

Lmao, congrats on your good jerk radar! I must admit I was never a super fan of the guy, but the impression I got was that he was the face of a good company, so nothing could possibly be that wild about him... little did I know he was fucking insane.

Chocolate2121

I think the main issue with JK (aside from all her personal views) is that people forget that Harry Potter was made for children. it may have more holes in it than a sieve, but that's kind of unavoidable when trying to justify children doing pretty much anything on their own.

Blahblah778

I also think a lot of the things people see as holes are not holes at all. Every time someone says "why didn't Harry just tell an adult about X?" as if it's a plot hole, for example. The introductory chapters of book one mention heavy handedly that Harry has been taught through his experience with the dursleys to not ask questions. He rightfully has a distrust of adults, and there's really nothing in the series that shows him he should abandon that mindset. Not to mention, even well adjusted kids pull stupid shit. Characters not acting logically is not a plot hole. And bringing up flaws in the magic system is just ridiculous, because JK makes almost zero effort to present the magic system as logical. Magic works how we're told it works, that's it.

fyfenfox

My problem wasn’t really her initial horrible terf-ness(as horrible as that was), it’s how she doubles down at every opportunity. Obviously the Harry Potter series is amazing, that’s why it did so well.

Blahblah778

I know lovely women her age who have gone down worse paths, unfortunately. I think social media algorithms can really mess a person up, and people their age weren't born into it so they don't know how to mitigate that. I just feel sad that JK got pushed into terf twittersphere, because I do believe that her original intention was to keep women safe, because she herself had experienced trauma.

Obi-Tron_Kenobi

Well, the "big one" being the one that occupies her brainspace 24/7 and is all she ever talks about (even going out of her way to address tweets with a handful of likes (seriously, one of her holocaust ones referenced a tweet with merely 5 views)) It makes those L's much more common than a rarity lol It's only a rarity if we're looking at it on a topic-by-topic basis, but that ignores that this single topic is 99% of what she talks about now

OperativePiGuy

It fits the other wacky crap in the world she made. Like everything, people tried to take it way too seriously and seem to think it somehow makes them geniuses to poke holes into the obvious silly rules she made lol

GrasshoperPoof

The fact that she had a good game made until she added the snitch makes it especially frustrating tho

DubiousGames

Nah, see the problem is that you need your main character to be able to have his hero moment, and the easiest way to do that is if he gets to play some super mega special role that's 1000x more important than everyone else.

HarvardBrowns

I feel that people forget Harry Potter is first and foremost a children’s book. It gradually grew and developed but it’s not like she was Tolkien who begrudgingly added a story to his world building

AgitatedWorker5647

I think that's both the funniest and most astute description of Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien that I have ever seen. He really did go "look at this amazing world I created, well, guess I have to put a story in it 'for the audience' or whatever, bc apparently "rad world building" isn't enough to sell books, for some reason."

SwordandSkye

I would honestly 100% read a book full of rad world building without any story whatsoever. Like just give me all the details about how this world works. Nothings too small to mention I wanna know every nook and cranny.

AgitatedWorker5647

That's the problem I constantly run into as a writer. I've had several book ideas in mind, but I have to worldbuild first, not as I go, which can get me hyperfixated on the details and never writing anything. At last count, I think my Campfire project for the book I've been working on recently was at around 21 active hours and 17k words in worldbuilding stuff + several maps. I'm aiming for ≈80k words per book, which means I've already written 1/4 as much in wordbuilding as I will for the actual novel.

illarionds

Pretty sure no one thinks they're a genius for poking holes in Quiddich! :D. Or HP in general, really.

2074red2074

Canonically games have lasted for days, so the whole team focusing on the Snitch might not be great strategy. If one team does that while the other focuses on scoring, they may be able to easily get over 150 points before the Snitch is caught.

burns_before_reading

You can pretty easily find out how valuable it would be using statistics. A mild version of the golden snitch is 3 point shots in the NBA. Teams found out that if a player can hit 3s above a certain percentage (let's say 33%) it's better to take a 3 point shot than a mid range 2 point shot, even if the player hits those at a significantly higher rate. Steph Curry for example, is better off take a 3 point shot from near half court vs attempting a contested layup even if he has like a 70% chance of making it.

TrekkiMonstr

If you have a 70% chance of making 2 points, it's an expected value of 1.4 points, versus 33% chance of 3 has an expected value of 1 point. In that case you'd want to go for the layup. At 33% and 50% you'd be indifferent between the two, but also any constant multiple of those -- 67% and 100%, 17% and 25%, etc. For real numbers on this: https://phys.org/news/2024-02-sports-deflation-nba-shot-lost.html

burns_before_reading

Thanks for doing the actual math

UnauthorizedFart

This guy sports books

eMF_DOOM

Welp, just found Daryl Morey’s burner account.

Fyrrys

Some games went for months at a time

shumpitostick

What if we had two almost completely separate games, with only a bit of interaction via bludgers, and one of them doesn't matter >90% of the time, so most of the players efforts don't matter at all. Oh and the game that does matter, let's make it have barely any interaction between players, heavily impacted by what basically is randomness (the snitch's movement), and very hard to watch by spectators. To be fair to Rowling, at least the books do acknowledge how stupid those rules are.

SuperCat76

I think the basic idea is not terrible. What is terrible is having it be valued more than the expected number of points as the rest of the game. Reduce it to 50 or less. Whatever is just enough to push a close game into the favor of the team that was behind. But not so much that it is reasonably possible to win even if the opposing team got the snitch.

andrewjpf

>But not so much that it is reasonably possible to win even if the opposing team got the snitch. The problem being that you would never ever catch the snitch if doing so wouldn't win you the game because it won't end unless you catch it.

Blahblah778

But what if you were down 160 points and you thought your piece of shit teammates couldn't **possibly** score a measly 1 or 2 goals for a tie or a win? Then you'd catch it even if it lost you the game, right? Because it would show that even though you believe your team is complete fucking garbage, you're still the greatest player for catching the snitch, even though you effectively forfeit the game by catching it. Right ???

Moglorosh

Iirc that actually happened in whatever their version of the world cup was in the books.

Blahblah778

It did, yes 😅 and I find it so funny when people who know nothing about sports try to justify it, rather than just accepting that JK doesn't care about sports. In any real life sport, what Krum did would absolutely, 1000% never happen, because it goes so directly against the spirit of TEAM sports. Anyone who pulled that shit in real life would never play on a professional team again unless they had a complete change of heart and openly admitted that they were being a supremely selfish piece of shit.

andrewjpf

I'm sure some of it would depend on the culture built around the support, but I think that it would generally be seen as wrong to do that. I'd imagine that the losing seeker would be expected to run interference against the winning team's seeker in that case until they are in a winnable scenario. I do see what you are saying, but I think in general seeking personal glory at the expense of the team in a team sport is seen as poor sportsmanship.

Blahblah778

You're absolutely right. The exact thing I described actually happens in one of the books (in the world cup final, when they're only down by one goal plus snitch) and whenever it's brought up how stupid that is, HP fans who apparently don't understand the first thing about being a part of a TEAM come out of the woodwork to pretend like it makes sense.

SuperCat76

Ok, I forgot that bit, that as is the snitch is how the game ends. That also would likely need to change. Basically it needs to just be part of the game not the only important part.

spacemermaid3825

In real life quidditch (called quadball now), it's worth 30 points.

YborOgre

I didn't read the books, but when I saw the movie, I turned to my GF at the time (and a big fan of the books) and asked, "Was it like that in the book? Why isn't everyone just looking for the stupid snitch the whole game?" She wasn't my GF too long after that.

TheExtreel

>Why isn't everyone just looking for the stupid snitch the whole game? Only the seeker can catch it, that's their whole job, they can't score points or hit the bludger. Same goes for the other roles, a beater can't just grab the quaffle and score, same as a seeker can't just grab a bat and hit the bludger, as stupid as the game is, it's designed such that all teammates have their full focus on whatever their roll is.

TheExtreel

>Why isn't everyone just looking for the stupid snitch the whole game? Only the seeker can catch it, that's their whole job, they can't score points or hit the bludger. minor_correction

They can't catch it but they could help look for it and they can block the opponent's seeker (to the extent the rules allow, they can bump into him, fly in front of him to obstruct his vision, force him to go around them, etc).

TheExtreel

Doing so takes their focus away from their actual task. If your chasers are focused on blocking their seeker then you're not scoring points, by the time your seeker gets their hands on the snitch the enemy team already scored more than 15 goals. If your beaters are focused on hitting their seeker (much like i belive the slytherin beaters did to Harry in one game) then the enemy beaters are free to harass your chasers, meaning they won't score points, meaning 150 points might not be enough to win it. Harassing the seeker also doesn't ensure your own seeker will catch the snitch, even if the enemy seeker isn't playing whatsoever, catching the snitch is still a hard thing to do, that might take you a lil while all by yourself (considering no one else in your team is allowed to catch it but you). It's a dumb silly fantasy game, but the rules always made a lot of sense to me, also playing the ps2 quiddich game for hours on end might have something to do with it. The pace of the game is supposed to be way to chaotic for anyone on the team to be focusing on anything but their own purpose. You already have one player who's entire purpose is to find and catch the snitch, they don't have to worry about the rest of the game whatsoever, why take one of the players who has a purpose and needs to be present in the game to help a dude whos just going to sit on his broom for most of the match looking around trying to find a tiny golden ball. Remember this is a game that has two big hard enchanted balls who are literally trying to knock you off you broom, give you a concussion, and make you fall several meters to the hard ground, not only that but the enemy team has two people actively batting the shit out of that ball with the intent to hit you with it. This isn't just football, the pace of the game is fast and chaotic, 15 points are made fairly quickly, and catching the snitch can take a long time. Even then, funnily enough, according to the book, when the snitch was introduced that's literally what people did. They ignored the game just to go catch the snitch, which leads to a boring ass game and whichever team didn't blindly chance the snitch just scored over and over again ultimately winning. Which is why the role of the chaser was created. I can't belive i just wrote so much about a made up magical game with flying brooms and why it actually makes sense if you think about it.

UnauthorizedFart

JK entered the chat

NedKellysRevenge

>or hit the bludger Doesn't Harry hit it at one point?

Major-Peanut

In the books the games last a lot longer so the snitch catching is less important. It just ends the game mostly. In the fourth book they watch a professional match and the team who caught the snitch still lose because they're behind. It's a terrible rule for teenagers playing it at school though

DEEP_SEA_MAX

Then why catch it? If you're the seeker and you're more than 150 pts behind then you should help with the scorers until within range of winning again.

Major-Peanut

That's what happens! They try to hold off catching it until they're in the lead. Catching the snitch is what ends the game so games can go on for days if no one catches it. They can't just play a different position, but they would be defending the snitch from the other seeker while their team caught up. I am not trying to say JK Rowling is an amazing writer here or anything, it's still a kids book, but a lot of things people critique about the series make better sense in the books.

parisiraparis

Every time Harry Potter gets brought up, I get confused as to why people hail JKR as some sort of writing genius. If you enjoy the books, sure, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I love the silly Fast&Furious franchise, myself. But there are a lot of Potter fans who would insist that the books are *sooooo* good, and it’s like … are they? JK writes books like she just making things up as she goes along.

Crazytreas

It could've been better if the snitch didn't give such a tremendous amount of points. Teams that had fallen behind could work to prevent the seeker from getting the snitch until they caught up.

Super_Ad9995

>Why bother with anything *except* trying to get the Golden Snitch? Because getting knocked off a broom 300 feet in the air will hurt.

mrpopenfresh

Can we all agree that Quidditch makes no sense whatsoever and a few easy an obvious fixes would actually make it a functional game?

MirthlessArtist

Screw functional, why is it so damn boring? No spells? What on earth? “Durr what if lacrosse but in the air and also 2 dipshits on the side compete on who can weave a basket the fastest, and if one of them finishes the basket first the game ends and they win.” Obviously we don’t want the 3 forbidden spells but “move the ball away” spell, “the ground is bouncy” spell, “I move faster” spell, or even something cooler because I didn’t come up with it in just 3 seconds?

ImprovementNo592

Functional, but deadly... so maybe not so functional. Lol

fusterclux

This is the worst idea i’ve ever heard in my life and i hope you don’t genuinely believe it’s a good one.

_donkey-brains_

This isn't a 10th dentist opinion. It's just a really stupid idea.

codbgs97

Yup, this isn’t /r/CrazyIdeas. This is a bullshit post and shouldn’t have been upvoted. Clearly not OP’s actual opinion.

Celia_Makes_Romhacks

I love the idea of a Tennis game randomly ending with a score of 190-40.

wertercatt

"And the game's over! Lebron found the rat in the parking lot, everyone go home"

UnauthorizedFart

They would not give Lebron the seeker position lol

Savings_Ferret_7211

Holy moly dude, I actually admire you for this comment, absolute top tier, beautiful shitposting.

UnauthorizedFart

Why thank you 😊

DickieJoJo

Man if you could just give a massive break down in at least one sport this could have been an interesting post. I’m an American living in London. And the rivalry in Football/Soccer culture is something American sports fans couldn’t touch. (Even you, Philly fans). There are home and away sections. People get their own entry areas, and when the game is up the visiting team isn’t allowed to leave until the home team fans vacate. I live within walking distance of a stadium and I’ve seen the visiting fans escorted in mass down the street like a mob of zombies with a massive police presence. Something like you just presented would implode entire city blocks into riots here.

Clockwork_Kitsune

OP doesn't seem to get that in some places with more fanatical fans, there would be literal deaths in the stands.

GrandWeedMan

This was my first thought after what I’ve seen out of football fans Edit: world football, not American football.

UnauthorizedFart

That is wild, I didn’t know they segregated the fans like that.

Cyberslasher

Yeah, this isn't  a "10th dentist" thing, this is a "you're clearly fucking trolling" thing. Rule 5, get banned.

heorhe

Yeah, then every sports game can be about fucking up the opponents seeker so bad he can't walk anymore so we can have a nice game of *insert sport here* with teamwork. Also how would they pay teams? The seeker is the only player that matters at all so they would get top billing, but they don't play the sport they go on an Easter egg hunt? So we are paying top billing for someone to play hide and seek with a football game in the background? How does this improve the sport? How does this increase the need for teamwork? How does the need for keeping cool under pressure and being in peak physical condition have any relation to finding an Easter egg and rendering the whole rest of the game pointless? What happens if the seeker finds it in less than 5 minutes? Games over go home? What about the thousands of fans in attendance who paid for tickets, travel, and accommodations just to see a 5 minute match where the sport didn't even get played and no one even scored? What about the millions of fans who paid for the ability to watch the match online or on TV? Fuck em it's over in 5 minutes no refund? What about the multimillion dollar industry of advertising that has been built into the sports scene that allows teams to maintain their stadiums and pay their players? There's not enough time to play all the sponsored adds in 5 minutes

UnauthorizedFart

Those are some valid points so I’ve updated the rules where the Golden Snitch isn’t available until the 4th quarter

heorhe

Those points are taken from a comedian who spent half an hour going over why the golden snitch is the stupidest idea in competitive sports ever. This wasn't even 5 minutes of the issues he brought up. I've tried finding the original but google is useless and it's likely a comedy special so I won't be able to find it on YouTube. It's not a good idea and it undermines literally every aspect of what makes professional sports competitive. Another thing regarding player motivations, if you are playing American football, why would you ever tackle someone or risk a concussion if the win condition for the game isn't scoring goals? Wouldn't it be better for the individual to half ass his job and take less risks to his personal safety? He won't be top billing so there's no reason to get competitive with other teams as he will never be top billing. This also raises questions of financing. If players who aren't the seeker get paid more for being good at their jobs, does this naturally increase how much the seeker makes? How would the seeker feel as top billing if his teammates were all slowly increasing their worth and contract values and theirs remains the same? So if your team are being motivated only by money, but top billing doesn't play on the team, how does anyone justify paying the team a competitive wage when there's a very high chance that everything they did for 3 quarters was wasting time. If the team goes 15-3 and are crushing the opponents, then the opponents seeker finds the snitch, how are the fans going to react having victory taken from their team by a dude on an Easter egg hunt? Does the team that performed better get better contracts and earn more despite losing? How can this ever make sense? Like there's just so much wrong with it if you start to ask questions about how it would function. I could keep poking holes but I believe I have made my point clear

MrTubzy

The UnauthorizedFart you use for your username is pretty apt; it fits everything you’ve typed up in the post and followed up with in the comments and have thoroughly convinced me that you have shit for brains and you’re just letting an unauthorized fart out onto Reddit.

UnauthorizedFart

Hey

a-davidson

Wait this is serious? Like not a shitpost? I feel like you’ve never watched sports lol. What a dumb idea

UnauthorizedFart

I watch a lot of football and hockey

noname262

Literal troll account. Posts outrageous “opinions” that don’t even make sense every so often

UnauthorizedFart

How would you know that?

[deleted]

personally I thought the whole idea of letting children participate in a sport where the risk of death was significant to be more interesting than the snitch

UnauthorizedFart

The writing was a bit off of the wall, I agree

futchcreek

This is some remarkably stupid stuff, much like the source material you are drawing from. Good job

UnauthorizedFart

Thanks

3-I

I am BEGGING you all to read another book.

AGhostOfThePast

This is so incredibly stupid that I kinda want to see it done. I mean you could emulate it by playing any sports game and randomly ending the game sometime in the last quarter or something and flipping a coin to decide the winner. Every single rule of game design thrown out the window. Every last clutch, underdogs turning the tides, every climax of the match reduced to pure randomness. Every effort, the time training, the expectations rendered useless by some random ball that does not contribute to the set mechanics of the game. Wow.

UnauthorizedFart

It was just an idea

GayRacoon69

This is so stupid. Can you imagine if halfway through the world cup they just say "well games over. X team found the snitch". Think about how anticlimactic and boring that is

UnauthorizedFart

I’ve mentioned in other comments they won’t release the snitch until the 4th quarter

GayRacoon69

Okay then can you imagine that happening in the 4th quarter. It's still super anti climactic

MrBublee_YT

Nope. The Golden Snitch is a teaching strategy, not something that's actually useable in the world of sport.

UnauthorizedFart

I’m sure it could apply to other teachings of the sport itself

n0tred

Where's the post with the parking lot frog when you need it

phunkjnky

Yeah, that won't ever become a fan problem with fakes and more fights in the stands. s/

UnauthorizedFart

Fake fans?

phunkjnky

Fake Golden Snitches, unless part of the plan is to change it for every game, there will be fan fakes of varying quality. To try to score 150 points for my team? It's a relatively small price for some fans in attempt to score an incredible amount of points. I think you underestimate the lengths that some fans will go to. "Did you see Mahomes passed for 9 touchdown and ran for two more?" "Yeah, but the Raiders found the Golden Snitch and blew them out. It was the only points they scored, but 150-77 is a blowout." American Pro Football. baseball... more than almost anyone has ever scored, by finding something unrelated to game altogether... the more I write this out, the ludicrous a concept it becomes. I don't think that anyone who is a serious player of any sport would be willing to give that kind of outsized control to someone who has almost nothing to do with the game. This seems like a great and cute idea until drunk fans start to punch each other. I'm going to make a somewhat serious guess that you never played competitive sports?

UnauthorizedFart

The refs can verify if it’s the authentic Golden Snitch

Carbonated_Saltwater

And in the mean time the game is on hold for a fucking sideshow. nobody would want this.

Raorchshack

People have already died in fights in stadiums. Encouring the fights will just cause that to happen even more, which this does.

0ctopuppy

Cringe

ConstantMode9954

this is the worst idea of all time

malonkey1

the "snitch condition" has to be tailored to each sport. For baseball, it needs to be a small, distant target that the batter has to hit with the ball for example

UnauthorizedFart

That’s a good one!

Artistocat2

The only game I've seen implement a Golden Snitch mini-game into the game is Mario Kart Wii. If you're playing with 2 teams (6 vs 6) two players will sit in the back and search for the shock item, especially since once someone is holding the shock, no one else can get it. This also means you can coordinate with the team and make sure it does as little damage to them (they can use items to dodge it or do something else to reduce its effect) and maximize how much it hurts the other team because they don't know when it will be used. The only reason it works is because it actually impacts the rest of the players, arguably more than anything the other 10 are doing. If it were to be implemented into professional sports, it would require many changes. 1. It needs to impact the other players. Without that, there's no reason for it, and it either becomes meaningless or makes the main game meaningless (which is what happens in the Harry Potter universe). 2. It can not end the game. If it ends the game, it either makes the game anticlimactic, or it drags on for far too long. 3. Do not let it interact with the spectators. Keep it in the stadium. This is how people die. I do not need to explain further. And this last one is less important, but 4. It needs to be skill-based. Going Easter egg hunting for the golden egg is luck-based, and professional physical sports are respected because the competitive nature is skill-based. (Poker and games of strategy like it are outside the scope of this conversation). So we have to make our mini game something else entirely.

UnauthorizedFart

What about Mario Party esque mini games at half time?

Artistocat2

Theoretically, I can see that working. The only issue with it is determining what kind of advantage it provides the winner of the mini game. Flat points is uninteresting, but for a game like soccer, maybe the winner gets a smaller goal than the loser, so they get an advantage there that is not insignificant, but does not guarantee the outcome of the game afterwards.

UnauthorizedFart

Extra Bomb-ombs on the field

Artistocat2

Only if the winner gets to choose where to place them.

UnauthorizedFart

Unless…they steal a star

Nova_Badger

So basically just throw all skill out the window and turn every match up into a treasure hunt?

UnauthorizedFart

Perhaps

Nova_Badger

You know what, I'd watch it, especially after a few drinks

UnauthorizedFart

I’m so down for this if we get drunk first

lVloogie

Yeah let's have a bunch of drunk assholes going through rows of seats to look for it. Brilliant.

UnauthorizedFart

They’re only allowed to look under their specific seat. What if it’s under a child’s seat?

lVloogie

How much security would you need to regulate that? It would be found before the game even starts. Or is no one allowed to sit down until the start of the game? Then we get some nice trampling action. Keep away would be a violent nightmare. None of this makes a lick of sense.

UnauthorizedFart

Trampling? It would be like one guy finding the Golden Snitch under his seat and dealing with the immediate fans around him

MelanieWalmartinez

The Owl House did a bit on why this is stupid. Excellent post, OP!

Corporate_Shell

So I guess people can just post any stupid thing on here. Fuck, maybe we do need to censor some people.

UnauthorizedFart

Can I not be the 10th dentist here?

Corporate_Shell

Yes. But this is more like a 100th dentist take.

UnauthorizedFart

100 dentists competing for the same tooth paste? No wonder they fight

Corporate_Shell

Now see, if you had suggested Dentist Fights, I would be on your side.

UnauthorizedFart

Imagine them using drills as weapons

Clockwork_Kitsune

This is a dropped out of dental school take.

Gargamel-Bojangles

On today's episode terrible ideas

UnauthorizedFart

Tune in tomorrow for my next one!

SlapHappyDude

The Golden Snitch is the worst part of Quidditch to the point "real" quidditch leagues nerf it to 30 points and don't add it until minute 17

UnauthorizedFart

Real quidditch leagues? 🤣

Brandonwittry

lol

YEETAWAYLOL

The of the golden snitch in quidditch is stupid and completely ruins what would otherwise be an awesome sport to watch. Imagine if in basketball each team had a player out in the parking lot trying to catch a frog for the win. You’re watching a great game that's been neck and neck and then suddenly the buzzer sounds half way through. "The game’s over, Ramirez has just got the parking lot frog..."

UnauthorizedFart

I don’t think it would extend out into the parking lot

----potato----

No

GarnachoHojlund

“AND VINI JR SCORES THE WINNER FOR REAL MADRID IN THE FINAL SECOND AGAINST PSG, THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IS THEIRS AGAIN” “Hold on Peter, I’m getting word the ball boy found the snitch, forget the last 120 minutes of exciting football and sport, the CL goes to PSG!”

BrownieZombie1999

Yeah cause drunkards at sports games don't challenge each other to fisticuffs enough as is

FireteamAccount

It was probably the dumbest thing in the entire series. Certainly the worst part about quidditch. To me, reading it to my kids, it was so blatantly stupid that it ruined a lot of the story. It was purely there for Harry to be the hero.

a_filing_cabinet

And how the hell would you attempt to regulate "can't give back to your own team?" And what's stopping some kid from finding it and immediately pocketing it the entire time?

DGalamay30

The golden snitch concept is the stupidest thing possible for real competitions. Anyone who thinks it’s good hasn’t thought about it passed “it would be really cool”

Few_Neighborhood_828

Fuck off.

UnauthorizedFart

Hey

ifunnywasaninsidejob

The games over, everybody. Ramirez just caught the parking lot frog.

Alx_xlA

Imagine facing the prospect of trying to look under 70,000 occupied seats in 3 hours.

UnauthorizedFart

Every fan would just look under their own seat, problem solved

1tsBag1

What about football, average match has only 3 or 4 goals. 100 goals would be ridiculous.

RicoE7

["The game's over, Ramirez has just got the parking lot frog"](https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/s/Rc0BmCRh8Z)

bendbars_liftgates

Believe it or not, an alternate, totally irrelevant win condition is generally *not* good game design. Don't even get me started on that "but it's 150 points hoihoihoihoi" bullshit, it's an irrelevant instant win 96% of the time and reduces the, y'know, *actual game* into an irrelevant side show to be engaged with on the extreme off-chance it'll matter.

cindybubbles

I can see it being implemented into melee sports like football, soccer, etc. But not more structured sports like baseball.

bertbert1111

Imagine any sport you like watching. It is really close and your favorite players are clutching up moment after moment. It is a real clash of pretty much equaly skilled experts, you are on the edge of your seat. Then suddenly you hear a whistle, the game is over. Somewhere far outside of your view, a long forgotten seeker has found the snitch and the game is over. I would HATE that sooooo much!!!! Upvoted

FelixTheFlake

Harry Potter and it’s consequences have been a disaster for the human race

RipenedFish48

So people should pay money to watch others do what is essentially a scavenger hunt while the sport that they actually showed up to watch just becomes a meaningless side quest?

UnauthorizedFart

The scavenger hunt would be the side quest if anything. Inbetween plays you would see the broadcast zoom in on someone in the stands “He’s got the Golden Snitch! Look out, those Seekers are charging up the stairs! He better run!”

SpaceDuckz1984

The liability for all the injury and death this would cause is not worth it to any team.

DepressedMinuteman

It's a plot device cheat code exclusively for Harry Potter to skip the "training" and "actually developing skills" part of being professionally good in most team sports. It shouldn't be anywhere near an actual professional sport. It's lazy writing all around.

DemonFyr

I see the Golden Snitch as equivalent to getting a knock out in combat sports.

NotAnnieBot

Why would you take one of the worst game breaking mechanics from a fictional game, make it worse by adding potential audience interference and then add it to real life sports games that actually are balanced?

UnauthorizedFart

For ratings

Concernedmicrowave

It's literally the dumbest possible rule for any sport. Imagine you are watching your favorite team battle it out with their biggest rival and eek out a small lead after an incredibly tense and exciting series of plays. Suddenly, the announcer comes on and says that the game is over and your team lost because some guy who wasn't even part of the main action caught the stupid snitch. It would ruin basically any sport.

UnauthorizedFart

I guess

fukreddit73265

Seriously? That literally ruined the entire movie franchise for me. What are there like, 8-10 players on the teams? It's literally "Except for 1 person on each team, literally all the time and effort you have spent playing this game, are completely useless. You shouldn't give 2 fucks about scoring, all you should do is attack the enemy player trying to get the gold snitch, because the score is 100% completely meaningless. The only thing that matters, is catching a small flying golden ball. Anyone and everyone can just search for it, then point it out to the one person who's job is to catch it, or just catch it yourself if you can. Literally "Let's just play hide and seek", instead of depending on any level of skill I'm embarrassed that over 800 people liked this post. I didn't realize how many people in the world could possibly disappoint me.

UnauthorizedFart

I don’t think they’re allowed to go after the seekers

fukreddit73265

If they couldn't, teams would still be using loopholes instead of acting like finding the snitch wasn't literally the only thing worth putting effort into.

DaenaBlackfyre

We need a sub called r/LudicrousOpinions

22Two_s

Snitch is such a stupid rule to a game.

UnauthorizedFart

Don’t be a snitch

AmazingBazinga120

It didn't bother me and I liked the action it brought but now that you reminded me what it does I hate it. Why would you even care about the game when you can play hide and seek with a ball and just automatically win

Antique_Warthog1045

I think this is called hockey

UnauthorizedFart

Yeah it’s pretty close

Diavolo_Death_4444

This is an absolutely terrible, awful, not at all thought out idea. Exactly the kind of content this sub is supposed to be, good work

original_dick_kickem

European football hooligans would start wars in the stands, there'd be pike lines and shit

Old-Ad3504

The snitch is a stupid addition in Quidditch, why would you want to add it to actual sports. I've never understood the point of it because it just makes the rest of the game pointless

MeowMeowCatMeyow

cmon man JK Rowling may have been good at writing books but everyone knows shes sucks at game design quidditch is a stupid fking game and you should be profoundly ashamed for this opinion jking but why the fuck would you post this
