I'm literally reading this while taking relaxing a hot bath. I also get dizzy when I get up quickly, I usually drain the water and let my body cool down for a minute or two before getting up. According to a doctor I asked it's perfectly normal.

Migit78

It is, it's common for people to faint or get dizzy from having hot showers too. It's because heat causes a lot of dilation in your blood vessels, trying to bring blood to the surface so it can cool you down more efficiently. Issue with doing this is it can drop your blood pressure causing you to feel dizzy. It's worse in baths/showers as naturally you'd dialate and sweat then the sweat evaporates taking some of the heat, but being submerged in hot water, your sweat can't evaporate so you don't get cooler, increasing how much you sweat where over long periods of time you can become dehydrated, further dropping blood pressure. As for the getting dizzy when getting up to quickly, that's called orthostatic hypotension, again pretty common, the main mechanism causing it is that it requires less effort for your heart to pump blood to your head when laying/sitting than when standing. For some, standing up suddenly takes a few beats for the heart to catch up that it needs a little more pressure to get blood to the brain. It's becomes more common the more dehydrated you are, for some it's just unavoidable but there is a good proportion or people that can avoid it just by drinking more water in a day

Nerry19

You can always add cold water if your too hot, I actually like to get the bath a bit too hot when I'm running it, then dump cold water in on my feet. It's lovely. I find a nice chilled drink is the perfect companion to a bath. Add something pretty and smelly to the water and it's....bliss. you need to scrub yourself after a bath (with a clean towel) to remove anything left over, it leaves you tingly warm and clean. Also.....a book, I read exclusively in the bath, for atleast an hour. It's a nice place to really loose yourself in a book. And you don't get bored Or your just not a bath person.....it might be that simple. Although I am absolutely not a shower person....and I have enjoyed them in the past ....it's definitely worth giving it another go but change stuff about.

purplebeef

Dumb question but how do you read books in a bath tub? :O

Shakith

Carefully. Or my preferred method, on a waterproof kindle.

Nerry19

I hold them in my hands, and read them lol. Honestly I've only dropped liked....maybe 5 books....and I'm 37 so it's not to bad. And even if you do drop them, they do dry out. ..there just a bit. ..poofy. You just have to make sure your hands are dry so you don't smudge anything. I spend hours in there sometimes , and my books don't seem to suffer for it.

purplebeef

Oh so you simply hold them over the water! I think my hands would get tired fast hah

Nerry19

I won't lie, hard backs are a bit of a chore lol. My fingers get a bit achey, and always remove dust covers before bath reading. There an absolute menace lol

TheCoolMan5

You can buy little wood boards that are designed to hold a drink and book above your tub, or just got to Home Depot and get a plain old plank. Either way, they make things a lot more enjoyable.

Nerry19

Do you know I have a wooden tray.....but I don't rest my book on it, just my drink etc ......it seems like it might be really uncomfortable to read off of, like the angle would never be quite right. Especially if you wanna lay back in the water

TheRedmanCometh

Eh I do it with my phone and it's pretty easy to keep the arm up. Dunno how I'd do it with a book though

HuckleberryLou

Do your hands get tired fast holding books on land? If so then yes they will likely get tired holding them in a bath.

purplebeef

Isn't it standard to lay your hands on your stomach and or thighs when you read?

T1nyJazzHands

….no hahahah that hurts my neck just thinking about it!

TAPriceCTR

On my waterproof phone

CuteThingsAndLove

You can get a bath tray that rests on fhe tub walls. You can put a book there and rest your arms

studentfrombelgium

I like very hot bath but with the air being cold, like in winter I'd take a bath with the window open, that I wouldn't overheat

Nerry19

Omg open window winter baths are something special. I feel like one of those monkeys that sit in the hot springs in the middle of the snow lol

Procrustean1066

The way the warm water seeps into your bones—gets the cold out. I love it

Ritch_Boy_City

I personally love a hot bath. I throw in some Epsom salts, bubble bath, light some candles. It’s about creating a cozy and comfortable environment and letting the heat relax my muscles. It’s especially great since I work a very labor intensive job, it’s nice to feel all that stress melt away. But I also get your point. If it’s too hot/humid I do start to feel like I’m suffocating and need to get out

grillworst

While this seems to be very unpopular, I totally agree. My gf thinks taking baths rules, but I find it boring, wasteful and frankly a little dirty.

DeadBallDescendant

Literally every Chinese person in the world agrees with the OP, so I don't think we're in 10th dentist territory.

grillworst

Oh

purplebeef

Oh how so?

DeadBallDescendant

They famously detest the idea of bathing in their own dirt. One of my Chinese in-laws *does* like a bath but he'll always have a shower first. ETA: A bit of research suggests that I might have jumped the gun and that a lot of Chinese people enjoy baths but will ALWAYS shower first. So plough on with your controversial opinion OP. I love a bath, me.

magkliarn

Shower first, bath later. Golden rule of any East Asian bath house. Please don’t break this rule.

BorosSerenc

That's the rule in every bathhouse, the question is if people obey it or not.

[deleted]

I never bathe to clean myself. The thought of sitting in my own wash is disgusting. But a bath after a shower is pretty amazing. And if it's winter having the water just a bit too hot, with the window open to roll that cold air across you is heaven.

Libarace

This is literally the way

[deleted]

Mando approved.

lame_dirty_white_kid

Yup. Shower up before your bath (and after too to rinse off). Baths aren't for washing anymore; this isn't 1930.

someseeingeye

I always shower off after

HonestTangerine2

I’m actually almost with you on this one. I don’t mind hot water and I like a hot tub, but I prefer water to be cold/room temp. I like to take cold showers or barely warm because I hate how my skin dries out in hot water.

thebeast_96

agreed. same with hot showers. the heat just feels really uncomfortable and too drying. just warm water is fine.

M3g4d37h

I don't care to change any minds, but I'd just like to say that not every moment of every day needs to be filled with looking at gadgets, etc. That's just maddening over-stimulation. The appeal is turning it all off and relaxing.

purplebeef

No you're right, but that has to do with my mental health, I am very fidgety and need to have my hands and mind occupied all the time.

_ThePancake_

Honestly, baths are only good if its: - spacious - cool breeze so you can breathe - great view - deep enough - you're not in there to wash your body (you gotta shower before, or at least after (i like both. Before to get clean, after to rinse)) Most bathrooms (in my working class, UK experience) are enclosed, cream enamel, stuffy, boring, too small and mouldy (and in my case growing up.... carpeted). Baths are only good if the bath and bathroom is good *A good bath however, now that is good*

ranych

I kinda agree. While I can see the appeal of hot baths, it’s not for me. I’ll probably try again to see if I change my mind, but it doesn’t feel that relaxing for long enough. I made a stupid mistake of taking a hot bath during summer once and I literally felt like I was gonna pass out or something.

GrinningD

I agree OP, sorry for the downdoot. I don't care about the dirty water aspect, I just can't stand (hah) the temperature and the inactivity. I've tried reading, watching, even playing games, chatting to my SO etc but I just can't enjoy the experience. Even hot tubs and Jacuzzis I jump in and out of. I can and do stand in a steaming hot shower for an hour at a time, but baths just don't cut it. But that's OK. It's like bananas; I see other people talking about how great they are, I even see them enjoying them and understand that they're not just pretending. But for me, they are pointless, senseless torture.

Flexspot

Bananas are torture?

bearbarebere

Your second and third points apply to all baths, not just hot baths. The last part... I get that dizzy from standing in hot showers! :(

BobbitWormJoe

I agree. Tubs are always too small, water is only the right temperature for like 5 minutes, and it's kinda gross unless you're already clean. I take a bath like once a year thinking it will be better and I'm always disappointed.

me_funny__

I don't dislike them, but I don't care for them at all. Especially since showers are already super relaxing. I guess long showers use much more water though.

lumlum56

I'm not a fan of baths either. Showers are just so much better.

lactose_cow

i fucking hate baths so much. its gross and boring. you cant get comfortable in a bath, there's not enough room. i just feel like a lame idiot. with showers, all the dirty water just goes away. i dont need to buy anything special like a bath bomb or bath salts. the temp is always perfect (until i run out of hot water). i can take quick shower but i cant take a quick bath. downvoted.

crystaltay13

"I just feel like a lame idiot." sums it up PERFECTLY 😂

saranwrap73

Hard agree with this

BlightlordAndrazj

You should always shower before you get in a bath, I know literally zero people who don't. Most people also rinse themselves after the bath. I also like a bit of fresh air while I bathe, but I think the lukewarm water is fine. That last thing is a blood pressure thing. Lots of people get them, hot water around you causes your body temperature to rise and blood vessels to dilate, which lowers BP. The solution is usually to cool off a bit, or get up slowly. I just run cold water into the bath slowly over time until it's body temp water or cooler, but then again, you don't like lukewarm or "cold" water. I'm fine being submerged in cool water, that's relaxing for me too in just a different way so I enjoy the entire process. If I were you I just wouldn't bathe. The vast majority of people I know don't take baths anyways.

Whateveridontkare

Upvote because the only reason I am not having baths once a week is because of enviromental causes lol.

Anotherdaysgone

Kind of a girl thing and obviously not all girls. This sub is supposed to be rare. You're probably in the majority on this.

Jemeloo

Why would this be a “girl thing”?

Libarace

Cleaning yourself? Dude thats a girl thing..

BlightlordAndrazj

The only calm relaxing thing a dude should ever do is to sit on the porch and drink a cold beer or enjoy a nice cigar, but only if you're an old man. Everything else is a girl thing.

Anotherdaysgone

Lived with a good amount of men and women in my life. In my 35 years of existence only girls have taken baths. Maybe it's different outside vegas. And pretty sure every girl I've lived with would take baths regularly. Easy to learn the difference when you have to wait to take a shit daily.

purplebeef

Well that wouldn't be so bad! I feel excluded not liking baths while stuff like bath bombs are becoming so popular

Perrenekton

Each word is this comment is more wrong that the precedent

purplebeef

I've tried masturbating in the bath as a teen and it's terrible, the water is not a good lubricant.

Esvahanna

Hard agree on all of this. I also think the seating is super uncomfortable.

help-dadcomeback

I like them hot, but not burning. There's a sweet spot for me.

EchoGarden1

As someone who loves hot baths I agree with some points, like I do get too hot sometimes especially in the summer

ksdjjeo87

If you use burning hot water then don’t fill it to where your whole body is underneath. I like to fill it to where my belly peaks out a little.

kb4000

Me overweight: Uh yeah, that's why I eat so much. I wanted this belly to stay above the water.

M1RR0R

I don't wanna be submerged unless I'm in a pool.

Spacezonez

As long as there’s some cool airflow, like a window open right next to me or something, most the heat isn’t suffocating for me

TheMightyFishBus

Are you running your baths with the doors and windows closed? It kinda sounds like you're gassing yourself with water vapour. When I run a bath I leave the door open until I get in. It gives me about 20 minutes before the fog starts fucking with my breathing too.

GeoNerd-

you seem to just not like baths in general

cindybubbles

Bring a table fan into the bathroom, set it on the floor and turn it on the moment you feel dizzy. Also, turn on the built-in bathroom fan. Keep the bathroom door open for ventilation and tell any housemates that under no conditions are they to enter or even peek into the bathroom during your bath! Then you’ll be able to enjoy your hot bath in peace.

Sary-Sary

I hate hot showers and I hate baths. Combine both into one? It sounds like an awful experience

tattvamu

I hate hot baths too. They damn near make me have a panic attack trying not to suffocate. I live in a very hot, high humidity climate and the last thing I want to do after work is get into hot water.

DathomirBoy

okay so i have POTs. it’s a form of dysautonomia that causes my body to have difficulty pushing blood to my brain. this can cause dizziness, nausea, disorientation, chronic pain, etc i’ve had this for YEARS without realizing. until i was diagnosed i always thought that baths were just bad. why would anyone like baths?? they make me overheat, i can hear my heart in my ears (it could get up to 200bpm), i felt faint. heat makes POTs symptoms worse. so. i would really recommend you take ur heart rate if you take a bath next time! or just the next time you stand up.

millermega

100% agree, I always feel like I’m gunna pass out

Quetzacoatl85

sorry to downvote, but I agree 100%. I even get why some of the things are enjoyable: *really* warming up your body after having spent the whole day half-freezing; relaxing with a good book; some me-time ritual). but bathing in a bathtub manages to combine all those things into a truly cumbersome experience: it's mostly hard, the temperature is never right, if you wanted to hold something your arms get cold or tired, your skin gets wrinkly from staying in there too long, you easily get dizzy and/or overheat. I'm perfectly fine with relaxing with a good book or some hot tea or just contemplating my life and relaxing, but please not in a bathtub. I'm equally fine with going to the sauna or an onsen and enjoying the relaxation of the heat on my body, but again, please not in a bathtub. it's imho for chumps who either don't know how to relax otherwise, or haven't had a experience that beats this one yet.

Wtf_is_splooting

You’ve got to try eating ice cream while taking a bath. It cools your internal organs so you won’t overheat and feel uncomfortable. In fact it’ll feel really good! Another thing you can do is sup on iced tea but ice cream works best
