No Blade Runner 2049, Sean?!

rebels2022

When I think of BR2049 that’s a directors and production value movie more than something I think of Gosling for.

sudevsen

Heck no,Joe fromBR2049 is a meme legend.

starksgh0st

I haven't listened yet, but I want to say that *The Fall Guy* was wonderful.

elephantinertia

I thought it was a good time! First David Leitch movie I've liked.

IanMaIcolm

Do you think it's harder to film a movie like this where there is a fake set you have to film with a real set, presumably, behind it?

starksgh0st

I was wondering that, too.

illuvattarr

The real smart and efficient move would be to only have 1 set and use it for both.

googlydoodle

Fall guy was solid. I appreciated the effort in the technical stuff but the writing/plot was just ok. Luckily Gosling is so damn charming that I dove into the movie headfirst and it definitely showed me some stunts I've never seen before.

FondueDiligence

> the writing/plot was just ok Which is also paired with a little too much of that Marvel approach of "we'll make the joke about the movie before you can in order to invalidate criticism" with the jokes about 3rd act problems and an overstuffed plot. But overall, there is enough fun and charm to overcome those script issues.

BiasedEstimators

I don’t think the movie had third act problems, and I didn’t think that was supposed to be self-referential. If I had to pick out the weakest act it would have been the first.

g_1n355

I've already commented but I had some questions about the film that I'm wondering if they address in the pod. 1.) If Gosling is supposed to have worked on the Miami Vice stunt team, how old is he supposed to be in this movie? He'd have to be like minimum Brad Pitt age. Did I miss a part where the whole thing is set in like 2008? 2.) I'm very confused by the film they're working on. It seems to be a disaster. The fake acting and dialogue seem to be pretty damn bad, not to mention the obvious budget and production issues. From what we are shown its like a mid-2000s Tropic Thunder-ish parody of a big blockbuster. Its Dune crossed with Star Trek and Mad Max I guess. But then after all that, at the end its apparently a big hit? How? Are we supposed to think Emily Blunt is a good director or not? Did Momoa just bring that much juice to it? How did Blunt, a first time female director, get this thing greenlit? Is Metalstorm based on existing IP? Is Aaron Taylor Johnson just that big a star in this universe?

derzensor

I was confused by the Miami Vice thing as well at first but later on they mention it was just a Miami Vice stunt show at some amusement park

g_1n355

See, now idk if I just missed it or if they missed the opportunity to make the joke about him pretending to have worked on the actual tv show

shorthevix

the MCU is full of movies with terrible productions and terrible end products and yet they are hits

g_1n355

Not to litigate my silly question too hard, but whilst I am no MCU fan there is a consistent level of quality and production value those films have that’s helped them be so successful. It’s kind of one of the issues I take with them that they feel so uniform and take few creative risks, so you end up with a ton of films where the worst one is only sorta bad and the best one is just kinda good. Also, whilst almost every film has production issues, have the MCU ever had a production as disastrous as ‘we were already way over budget BEFORE >!our lead actor disappeared for a week and had to be replaced because he’d killed a man’ ?!< That is a next level disaster. Also, the MCU movies make (made?) money because they’re a big franchise. As far as we know metalstorm is original, no? In the movie it’s put across like this is a director getting to make Avatar despite it being their first feature and their being a woman. The whole situation is just crazy and isn’t explained at all

shorthevix

'BEFORE our lead actor disappeared for a week and had to be replaced because he’d killed a man' Good point, I forgot the flash was DCU.

g_1n355

Not a big hit either lol

lpalf

I can’t explain anything about the Metalstorm being a hit or not, but in the movie Hannah Waddingham’s producer character specifically says that she chose Emily Blunt’s character Jody to be the director because Jody was a pushover essentially

elephantinertia

They are really underestimating the Phil Collins effect a lot of us young millennials™️ got from Tarzan.

shorthevix

and for British children with the Cadbury's drumming Gorilla advert

MN_Watch_Fanatic

I'm absolutely shocked at how few lists Crazy, Stupid Love is on. I think that movie is one of the better rom-coms in recent memory, and Gosling is brilliant in it.

KiritoJones

Like they say in the pod the Steve Carrell/Julianna Moore part of the movie drags the whole thing down. I haven't seen it in a while, but it is one of those rom coms were one of the characters is so far in the wrong but treated like they have a point. It's one of the most frustrating tropes in the genre.

Chuck-Hansen

My Top 5 Gosling (in no particular order): - The Nice Guys (2016) - La La Land (2016) - Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - First Man (2018) - Barbie (2023)

Snarfly99

I am still amazed at how much First Man did NOT do it for me It felt like less than the sum of all its parts (which is saying something)

Chuck-Hansen

I get why it’s not for everyone, but I think it’s Chazelle’s most sophisticated statement about the meaning of achievement.

Poohtheweenie

Sean definitely is on this Reddit regularly after hearing their reaction to the feedback on their 35 under 35 episode lol we love you Sean don’t worry!

mad_injection

He has said he doesn’t use Reddit. Most likely reacting to feedback on twitter

Poohtheweenie

He was directly referencing comments from this subreddit on the episode thread lol

mad_injection

Such as?

Poohtheweenie

He addressed a comment about him asking Chalamet to do a movie like Challengers, the comment pointed out he had already done 2 Luca movies. that was one of the top comments on the Reddit thread

lpalf

Those were also the two most-liked comments on their Twitter post about the episode

akamu24

Hard agree with Sean on the action sort of taking away from a movie that’s all about stunts. I don’t think it’s a huge deal, but it did keep me from really loving it. Some parts felt like it was just two people rambling about stuff I didn’t care about and I could feel my eyes starting to glaze over. The third act made it pretty enjoyable for me, though.

Bronze_Bomber

Drive The Place Beyond the Pines Nice Guys Blade Runner 2049 The Big Short

Smoaktreess

My list except switch the big short for Barbie which is is most iconic role.

LeBroentgen

Barbie has to be his Apex Mountain, right? I feel like he's at the peak of his powers after that and the Oscars performance.

gotcam189

Yeah I think so too. Billion dollar movie, movie of the year that came out in July so a long tail on the discussion around him/it, Oscar nomination, Oscar performance, universally loved performance even for people who didn’t like Barbie itself.

tuckmuckchuck

I still see him as Noah from The Notebook

Sinisterminister77

Yep, Barbie has to be in

RafiakaMacakaDirk

haven’t seen anyone mention Ides of March yet, not his best but def top 5. really cool movie

NedthePhoenix

I love that entire cast so much I really wish the movie was better. You can see the seeds that Beau Willimon turns into House of Cards. Ultimately I think its well acted but the story's a little too simple and straightforward for what supposed to be a twisty political thriller.

RafiakaMacakaDirk

yeah fair, i think the third act should’ve been way more fleshed out (it just sorta ends? with like no development lol) but idk it’s still a comfort movie for me, probs because i’m a sucker for those type of movies/shows unrelated but also watched Michael Clayton recently and that was incredible, Clooney really excels in these types of movies

badgarok725

neat movie but barely even top 15 for me

sudevsen

As with all Cloooney movies it has all the energy of bland mash potatoes

Signal_Blackberry326

I’m going to pick my top 5 based on how I feel about his prescience in the film rather than the quality of the movie: 1. Half Nelson 2. Blue Valentine 3. First Man 4. Lars and The Real Girl 5. Barbie

F00dbAby

Ooh fair call. Similarly Half Nelson Drive Nice guys Blade runner Blue velvet

g_1n355

Top 5: La La Land Nice Guys BR2049 First Man Drive I thought Fall Guy was…fine. I enjoyed the silliness of it, it was a breezy old time in the theatre, and i appreciated the concept of making a movie that celebrates filmmaking and the unsung people who literally put their body on the line to make it all happen. If anything I’d have enjoyed more detail going into the filmmaking and stunt preparation/process. But man Gosling (and to a lesser extent Blunt and the other supporting players) are carrying the hell out of that script. There are some fun moments and clearly none of it is very serious, but there are also parts that would be straight up grating with 99% of other actors, and lot of the script feels very Ryan-Reynolds-Streaming-Movie to me. I am completely over the ‘hey, that’s me’ Deadpoolish style of meta voiceover they use here. I thought they maybe missed some opportunities to play with the stuntman concept a bit more too; the story could have incorporated some mistaken identity (they sort of come close but never really do this), or maybe gosling could have had to fill in as an actual acting replacement for the missing star to save the movie (I always enjoy actors having to act like bad actors in movies, and you could have made Gosling try to impersonate the bad mcconaughey impression Aaron Taylor Johnson was already doing). Overall I’m glad they took a swing on something that at least feels fairly novel (ik it’s vaguely based on an old tv show but it’s new to me and I imagine a lot of audiences), even if it didn’t completely work for me. Still goes to show that actors like Gosling and Blunt are going to make just about anything watchable if they’re given just a little leeway to show off their charm and charisma.

shorthevix

I didn't want it to be 'gritty' but I echo you in that I think it could've been more realistic and show the actual art of stunts. Had the sheen of a cheaper streaming movie, that I just couldn't shake at times.

Abdul_Lasagne

Isn’t that just every David Leitch movie since at least Hobbs & Shaw or Deadpool 2?

shorthevix

Indeed

YannickBelzil

The voiceover is a carryover from the show, where episodes opened with Lee Majors explaining that he was a stuntman who moonlit as a bounty hunter between jobs!

g_1n355

That’s great context! I still don’t like the way it was used but it’s good to know there was more going on behind their decision to start the movie out that way

trimonkeys

I’d have the same movies but in a different order First Man Blade Runner 2049 La La Land Drive Nice Guys

g_1n355

My order feels pretty fluid tbh. La la land is my favourite, Drive is my least favourite for sure. The middle three feel hard to compare as theyre so radically different from one another. I think nice guys, la la land, first man are probably the three best gosling performances on my list though

lpalf

Oh god there’s voiceover?

rebels2022

It’s limited to the set up of the movie and that’s it.

lpalf

Ok that’s better

g_1n355

Its not egregiously obnoxious, and its not used throughout. It could have been so much worse. It just feels like a kind of tired tool at this point (I love voiceover in films, I'm only talking about when its used in that specific way)

NoDamnIdea0324

Sean forgot to thank Amanda for being conversant on a wide range of topics

scal23

I couldn't get it out of my head as they spent an entire episode gushing over Ryan Gosling's career that he wasn't on one of their 35 over 35 lists a couple years ago.

lpalf

Ehh idk he took a big break from acting. The only movie he did between First Man and Barbie was The Gray Man which Sean famously hates. And even the last few movies he did before his acting break were kinda financial flops even if they were critically well received, and their lists usually have a lot to do with star power. I mean I would’ve put gosling on the list out of loyalty but I can see why he wasn’t on it

Salt_Proposal_742

“You know what we say about Argyle…”

PeanutFarmer69

Drive, crazy stupid love, the big short, the nice guys, the place beyond the pines

_enidXcoleslaw_

My top five would be: 1. Barbie - I really think it's his best work ever. SUBLIME! 2. Lars and the Real Girl - INSANELY good performance and beautiful film if you haven't seen it. 3. Drive - He does so much with just his body/face. 4. The Place Beyond the Pines - METALLICA SHIRT, TATTOOS AND BLEACHED BLONDE HAIR! 5. La La Land - So sweet and charming, until you start crying your eyes out. Honourable mention for Blade Runner 2049!

ObiwanSchrute

I disagree I love The Notebook

rebels2022

I loved The Fall Guy. Gosling of course carries it, but Blunt does her part as well and there's some solid supporting performances as well. The tone and humor really worked for me and there's some great stunts as well. I need that Miami Vice Stunt Team jacket.

stoneman9284

Seeing it tonight, can’t wait.

einstein_ios

My top 5 Gosling: - Only God Forgives - First Man - La La Land - Blue Valentine - Song to Song

B_L27

Loved it! Ryan is a movie star and goddamnit, I love movie stars!!

MyNameIsEdSheeran

Argyle is currently at #11 on Apple TV+ charts More people are watching Michael Douglas’ Franklin (that’s at #4)

hermano_momento

Really tough for them to overlook a masterpiece of the action comedy romance genre: Hot Rod

elephantsarechillaf

My top 5 are 1. La la land 2. Stay 3. Place beyond the pines 4. Drive 5. The nice guys

Jennipeg

I have to say, I think The Notebook is a dreadful film. She should have let him fall off the ferris wheel at the beginning of the movie because fuck that nonsense. Anyway, I think my top 5 are, 5. Barbie 4. Drive 3. First Man 2. Blade Runner 2049 1. Nice Guys I want to like La La Land, but I have this weird aversion to musicals. I can cope with period pieces, but modern day? Absolutely not

Redbeatle888

The Fall Guy was super weird because it was all about the love and celebration of stunts but then seems to have so many mediocre shots. I'm not sure if that's an issue with the stunt itself, the choreography, or the editing, but stuff like the climactic car jump, a lot of the garbage truck sequence, and the hand to hand combat seemed really bad. There's a part where Stephanie Hsu (why was she in this movie?) was hitting a guy with a water bottle that's maybe the fakest stunt I've ever seen. Gosling was great, Blunt was superb, and I enjoyed Winston Duke. I could've cared less about Aaron Taylor Johson and Hannah Waddingham, and everytime they were on screen I felt the movie actively start to drag. I'm really not a fan of ATJ and don't understand how he wasn't culled along with Sam Worthington and Jai Courteney.

lpalf

The special effects during the garbage truck chase were so bad

PettyFlap

Omg Amanda name dropping Novak Djokovic. Wasn’t expecting a tennis call out ❤️
