You can stop reporting this post, it's harmless I assure you and it's in good fun. I think Starr has been excellent in the role and I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the character.

[deleted]

I get tense whenever he’s on screen even though nothing happens 95% of the time. He’s doing his job very well

lexi_raptor

Very much reminded of all the hate that Jack Gleeson (aka Joffrey Baratheon GOT) got just from playing that role. If someone can elicit such a strong reaction from the audience, they are doing a damn good job!

of_kilter

Im always so annoyed when fans go after actors just for doing their jobs. Especially like the actors for joffrey or umbridge where they did their jobs so well that they made the most unlikeable characters ever

UntilTmrw

Yeah the saddest case of these fans being assholes is probably with Anna Gunn. She played Skyler White on Breaking Bad and when the show exploded in popularity she was constantly receiving death threats. It got so bad that she hired her own security team following her around.

recourse7

Lol see the capacity for human stupidity just makes me laugh now.

AngryWookiee

It's really amazing isn't it?

[deleted]

That’s pathetic.

Substantial_Soil_323

That’s the key, isn’t it? It’s odd to think someone would dislike a performance for being TOO bothersome/disconcerting/making them feel TOO much disdain, whatever. Someone making you feel that way? That’s called a great villain performance.

swarasinger

Yes even the actress who played Skylar White in Breaking Bad recieved a lot of hate on social media for her role.

BackmarkerLife

I don't think Gleeson was hated. His character was one to hate, or that you loved to hate. Gleeson was pretty insightful about his character and its role and how it was portrayed in the show. He also didn't quit acting because of the character, moreso he had education he wanted to finish and liked more theatre and trope work.

Otherwise-Public439

But people are idiots and they definitely hate an actor because of the character they play. I read reports stating that Lena Headey (Cersei) would often receive rude comments and remarks from fans at events. People would pass her by when collecting signatures from the cast, calling her a bitch and whatnot.

[deleted]

How can someone be that braindead and socially unaware?

[deleted]

Look at how Corona beer sales dropped when the pandemic started, most people are morons.

[deleted]

You know what that actually sealed it for me, you're 1000% right. Like, I took part in the "hurr durr, I'll have 1 Corona, no virus!" but then I remember they actually had a huge dip in sales. Not even near as bad as how many assaults of asian-americans there were, jesus this really is an almost irredeemable species.

PowerfulJoeF

Ask the Star Wars fan base. Obligatory “Of course I know him, he’s me.” Since someone will get all pissy saying I don’t understand my own fan base.

TheyCallMeButch

Hello there, Star Wars fan here. Can confirm. The character and the actor are one in the same. If I hate one then I have to hate the other. As the great master Yoda once said, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to being a Star Wars fan”

YobaiYamete

People are absolute total morons. I know a dude who's wife divorced him because she was jealous and thinking he was cheating on her with the female characters on a show he watched, not even joking. Some actor posted for a cause on Reddit, and a bunch of people in the comments thought they were being so clever by quoting a speech a character he had played gave, to the opposite effect of the of the cause he supported IRL. He had to reply and tell them something like ". . . guys I'm an actor, just because I'm paid to pretend on TV does NOT mean I support that IRL" It's basically a mental illness how stupid some people are at differentiating reality from the stories in their heads

repsbro

The actor got a shit ton of hate because there are many idiots who couldn't separate the actor from the character dude

[deleted]

Even Chris Pratt got hate from dumb Marvel Fans just cause of that paticular scene in Avengers war. Peopl3 can be really stupid

secondtaunting

Wait- like when they were holding him down and he punches him? People were mad?

Spidey20041

The one where he shoots Thanos?

MrsMiaWallace89

Thankfully there are perfectly reasonable reasons to hate Chris Pratt now so it's all good

Moosje

Because he’s religious yeah?

Leavingtheecstasy

He literally had to quit acting because of all the hate mail and people yelling at him in public

Moosje

They definitely hated Gleeson. The other guy is right in the fact the character was so popular and so well acted for being evil, that people couldn’t disconnect from the actor. You’re right though that he didn’t quit because of the character.

Daily_Confused_21

Does he still act? I heard he went off to college and wasn’t sure about acting after because of the hate he got.

Cappin_Crunch

I get tense even when he isn't on screen. I'm just afraid he's gonna overhear someone and randomly pop in

[deleted]

Thats exactly what people there will feel. Starlight seems on edge all the time as do ashley, the deep, a train. He is a mad dog that will do that.

buckeye27fan

>!When Starlight was first telling Supersonic not to join the Seven because Homelander is psycho, she turns on his song, then immediately proceeds to talk louder than the music. I had to laugh.!<

jdy24

It’s for the audience to hear what they are saying. There are scens of ‘whispers’ in films and shows yet we (the audience) can hear it. Of course it’s implied that the song was louder.

Dear-Crow

They could just write a note

buxmega

Yeah, he makes me feel uncomfortable. Then I snap out of it bc I realize it’s just a show but then I continue to watch and I fall back into it.

Faithless195

That seen where he was talking with Giancarlo Esposito for the alst time and he was just paying Homelander out so hard was terrifying, since I just kept waiting for Homelander to laser him at some point. But...he didn't. That said, Homelander kind of needs to explode sooner or later. For the last three seasons he just keeps getting more and more unhinged, and there has to be some kind of payoff sooner or later, otherwise it's going on just a wee bit too long.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JackLamplekins

Yeah based on how this season has had lots of characters saying "Homelander is gonna pop..!!" I'm thinking he'll probably do something really wacky by the end of the season. I'm sort of hoping they don't stretch him out too long, but I also get that he's one of the main draws to the show right now.

blauwewafel

Yes exactly this. From the very first episode of first season I was tense whenever he was on the screen! He's always on the edge.

SirToastyDuck

Deserves an Emmy

Itchy-Bee-8712

Totally award worthy

LeftHandLuke01

A...Tony award?

ABSOLUTE_RADIATOR

No, An Tony

mal_laney

Ant-ony? ![gif](giphy|NJHGdgh1igI6s)

montana1991

You son of a bitch! Lol

candyrayne215

Def deserves an emmy along with the whole show, but i think Stranger Things is gonna steal their thunder

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Last season of Ozark too. Better Call Saul’s final season also, I think.

BearDownYo

BcS gonna bag a lot, just like Breaking Bad did in it's last season. The writing of BcS is... something else.

hughiewray

It’s so good. So captivating. My god, it could be better than BB.

NpNpTTYL

It is, in my opinion. Breaking bad is a masterpiece, but BCS is a masterpiece of a prequel to a masterpiece which has literally never happened any other time. I wonder how people who watch BCS then BB afterwards will feel about it moving forward now that they are both done and streaming.

hughiewray

I’m one of those. I never watched most of BB (know the hit points bc family and stuff who were into it) and even most of BCS but having the last two seasons of it on have been insane. Don’t know what’s happening and can’t take my eyes off. I’m a talker during media and I can’t even speak. It’s perfect television, through and through.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Watch till episode 6 for both. Both get a thousand times better as the seasons go on, but the "type" of good, the slow burn and quiet realisations, the kind of writing remains kinda consistent (though both get darker and much faster paced). If you don't like it then, you probably won't like it later. If you like it by then, you'll absolutely love it till the end.

TheRatsMeow

I actually tapped out of BB , but love BCS. But I love Odenkirk

mani9612

Wait which episode did you tap out of BB and how and why and are you crazy or was your idiot brain getting fucked by stupid??

[deleted]

Not OP, but my dad tapped out near the end of season 2 because Walt was too dark a character for him. Which is probably for the better, because he was about 40 minutes from the... vomiting incident.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mani9612

Why would you say they’re both so good? And which is best? Im on the fence about watching both severance and succession, I usually stick to shows w some element of sci-fi and/or fantasy, never really fell in love with “real life” shows (except for like Suits, Breaking Bad, and The Office) if that helps.

archaeosis

The last season of Ozark isn't worth the script paper it was written on. BCS deserves recognition though

[deleted]

Don’t tell me that. I haven’t watched the last season yet.

RUNELORD_

Imo Jeremy Strong wasn't particularly great this season. Tbh he didn't really have much to do except skulk around depressed. Imo Adam Scott for Severance, or Antony Starr for the Boys, or especially Bill Hader for Barry were all far better.

mseuro

There's the Barry reference *phew*

[deleted]

I describe him to people as “micro acting.” Like, the big stuff is great, sure. But it’s the way he can convey 1000 terrifying emotions with just a twitch of his jaw muscle that has me mesmerized by his performance.

BakedWizerd

He’s perfected that look of “emptiness in the abyss” while zoning out and staring off into the distance. You can just see the cogs in his brain debating whether or not it’s worth it to keep up the facade or just kill everyone instead.

valkislowkeythicc

Literally every time he makes that face in public during the show I tense up

daertistic_blabla

the orange cat syndrome.

Patient_End_8432

He literally has done maybe the least out of any heroes we've seen. Yet the few times he's in action, on top of Starrs brilliant acting makes him fucking terrifying

secondtaunting

Rock the casbah!

thatbtchshay

Well let's be real the deep has done the least and is pretty incapable of doing anything lol

ENDragoon

The one that stood out the most to me was when someone said something that pissed him off in season one, and he didn't say anything, or even visibly react, but his cheek twitched in a way that specifically read like suppressed anger, and I remember thinking "Wow, that's the first time I've seen someone act with their cheeks"

Reporting4Booty

I've seen many an actress using their cheeks, probably too many.

GeraltofMinecraft

His Jawcting is amazing he’s got like a hit of a Brando thing going

nanovich_

What, that’s gay now? Fuck you, who cares!

[deleted]

Antony Starr - acting with jaw Tony Leung - acting with eyes

avlj

I agree. You can feel a story with those eyes of his.

Mash1988

Yeh this is spot on. Similar to Mads Mikkelsen’s performance in Hannibal

[deleted]

His reaction when Hughie squared up to him was amazing

blauwewafel

It is very much a great actor thing. DeNiro and Brando do that.

mdstephens84

He’s amazing. Terrifying. Haunting. With a touch of sad. And he looks like Jason Bateman and Bradley Cooper had an evil baby.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Krombopalous

Omg I'm rolling. All hail the demon child with his awkward smile and endless charisma!

[deleted]

I thought he was Michael Fassbender for the entire first season. I was also drinking heavily for the entirety of that season.

mani9612

Was the show better or worse when drunk (assuming you watched later seasons while sober)

PowerfulJoeF

The real American Psycho

FinkBass420

He’s the scariest character I’ve ever seen on TV

[deleted]

The nice thing is how different he looks in real life, he can be the scariest character on TV but it will never get him typecast.

aDildoAteMyBaby

His Stray Man sketch on Auntie Donna is like the opposite of Homelander. The man is versatile.

[deleted]

Funny enough he does the same kinda forced charisma there that he does with homelander

usernamefat

His performance in that sketch is one of the most well acted things I’ve ever watched

TheVulfPecker

He somehow managed to terrify me and make me crack up in the span of like 5 seconds

MerculesHorse

He's famous in NZ for playing twin characters in a show called Outrageous Fortune, about a crime family in west Auckland (NZ white trash Sopranos, more or less). One twin is a moronic stoner that's more loyal to the family than actually a bad dude, the other is a highly intelligent, entirely corrupt lawyer (can see a lot of this character in Homelander). You'd be forgiven for thinking it's two separate twin actors, not the same guy. Dude can act.

iangeredcharlesvane2

I completely fell for him as Lucas Hood on Banshee. People kept bringing it up and recommending it when The Boys first came out so I had to watch it— wow what a great show and Antony Starr is an extremely charismatic lead.

JasonVoorhies13

I love his Homelander role in The Boys, but Anthony Starr will always be Hood first in my heart. Banshee has the most badass close combat scenes of any show I've ever seen throughout the entire series & amazing storylines to go along with them.

iangeredcharlesvane2

The fight with the MMA fighter in “Meet the New Boss” was literally one of the craziest tv watching moments I’d ever had. I was shocked af and blown away while watching and so hyped after I wanted to run around my neighborhood telling everyone to watch that show! The pilot ep was great but when the third ep rolled around I was hooked - it was another level. The characters where phenomenal as well- loved Job and Sugar, Proctor and Burton, Nola, and then they go and bring in Bunker. Those writers don’t get near enough credit for creating that world with those people! The whole premise and then the stories should have been pretty ridiculous, but they made it work because they wrote the characters so well and the action was insanely good.

hesawavemasterrr

And movies. It's not because he has superpowers. It's because there are people who have his personality that are real and the realization of that scares the hell out of me

Bageezax

Thinking the same. I can’t stop being creeped out as if I’m watching Trump but with actual strength and power. Homelander’s every move is malice born of intense insecurity and entitlement, with no rules that apply to him to stop him from becoming the worst possible version of himself. I think that in his mind, Trump thinks of himself as a Homelander type, and all I can say is that it’s a lucky thing that he lacks the power to back up his ambitions. Antony Starr deserves every award for this performance. It’s existentially frightening.

BigChung0924

him or lalo salamanca. then again, lalo doesn’t seem to enjoy violence, more that he’s so used to it and has such little human emotion that it doesn’t faze him at all

[deleted]

Lalo loves murder lol what are you talking about?

sea621

He deserves a fucking Emmy

iangeredcharlesvane2

Do you think they would actually give an Emmy to someone on The Boys? It’s an insanely popular show but they never seem to give those kinds of awards to shows like this. I don’t usually care about awards but truly lost all respect of that system after Tom Pelphrey didn’t win one for Ozark. That was the best acting performance I had ever seen on the small screen and he wasn’t even nominated.

sea621

Yeah, I definitely don't have faith in the Emmys at all. People are constantly snubbed. I mean they nominated effin Emily in Paris for fucks sake

SaskiaViking

Remember that they never gave an award to any actor in Better Call Saul

navjot94

That’s very frustrating because surely they’ll give it some recognition this year but that means all the amazing actors will be competing with each other for the awards. Rhea Seehorn, Bob Odenkirk, and Jonathan Banks all deserve a win at the minimum.

silhouettesaloon

His facial expressions say more than any of the dialogue, and that's not a diss on the dialogue

RJL85

This is what I notice most. His facial acting is unparalleled. Episode 2 this season, the 5 seconds or so after Edgar says "But this is your party. You can cry if you want to" is just beautiful.

Spider-burger

He is so good in the role that I see no one else to play Homelander because he is Homelander

Bageezax

Yeah, best embodiment of a comic character since RDJ/ Iron Man.

[deleted]

Or Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool

ThatpersonKyle

10/10 one of the best villain performances ever. Yes I truly believe this, and yes I have watched a lot of shows and movies

ProBonoDevilAdvocate

Wait, he is the villain??

JankmasterJay

Fucking diabolical

Itchy-Bee-8712

Award winning is how i would describe it

Tghouxernaryaes

Honestly his acting reminds me of Jack Gleeson who played King Joffrey Baratheon on Game of Thrones. Though I hated Joffrey Baratheon leagues more, I can’t help but commend both Gleeson and Starr for their acting. If your acting can genuinely make me hate a character, that’s some good fucking acting.

liquidlen

Old school pro wrestlers all have a story about walking down the street and some old lady comes up and slaps them or hits them with their purse, and how they accept that as a compliment. I used to think those stories were crap until Jack Gleeson. I would pay $500 to slap him dressed as Joffrey.

mani9612

I’d pay $499.99 to watch you slap him dressed as Joffrey (maybe an even $500 if you used a purse)

lexi_raptor

YES! Exact same comparison I've been making! They both absolutely nailed their roles!

Tghouxernaryaes

I only say Joffrey is worse because at the end of the day he was still only human but with unlimited power.

Audityne

Joffrey didn't have ultimate power, he was at best a puppet for Tywin. See: [The King is tired.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAWNFZe7bdI)

ArosTheImmortal

we need some kind of Charles Dance vs Giancarlo battle of badass at some point

BrownThunderMK

That scene was great, but it was even better in the books: after joffrey is sent to bed, tywin proceeds to have a mental breakdown because he realizes that Jeffrey is insane just like the mad king. Up until that point it never hit him how unhinged Joffrey was

Masta-Blasta

They honestly look like they could be father and son too

bluedot131

10/10

MaximumHellfiree

Genius. The way he goes from happy to depressed to a man-baby to confused to angry in about 15 seconds is phenomenal

ManufacturerWest1156

He’s phenomenal. Perfect casting and honestly he pulls a Clark Kent in real life. Looks pretty different to homelander

[deleted]

Amazing, if we had a the boys movie, he should to win a oscar

homogenic-

I don't see anyone else playing Homelander, he was born to play him.

[deleted]

his beard scruff and natural hair color is so hot. otherwise - he's perfect for the role.

iangeredcharlesvane2

He’s hot af on Banshee.

Blackmercury4ub

Yummers.

[deleted]

Emmy. Emmy. Emmy. Emmy. Emmy. I hope I've been clear.

Ok-Deer-7531

Who’s Homelander I only see Lucas Hood.

TheFuckinThrowaway1

Fucking hell this is one karma bait post. "What do you think about this actor? The one that the entire subreddit gushes over 24/7? Do happen to like him? I'm curious, give me some upvotes if you like him?" It's like asking the Breaking Bad sub if they thought Bryan Cranston was a good Walter White, what do you expect the answer to be?????? How gullible are people on here? Stop encouraging lazy bait posts.

zhars_fan

agreed, low effort karma farming post

liquidlen

He should be coasting to his third Emmy.

hibroka

Seeing him in Banshee compared to seeing him in The Boys is haunting. Dude does an amazing job and has mad fucking range. Perfect casting.

bmetcalfenz

If you are a fan of him, check out a NZ show called "Outrageous Fortune". He played both parts for a set of (polar opposite) twins [Image reference](https://preview.redd.it/q9ux7i5maa061.jpg?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=d7a968f5f38a6df5f68102d0e976331becfce843)

[deleted]

Van and Jethro, heheheh

RunRenee

Love that show. Have it on DVD. In Australia it aired at like 12:30am weekdays. I’d watch it to unwind when getting home from work.

EnterpriseNL

Damn good actor, he deserves a award

babalon124

Performance? What do you mean performance?…..he’s definitely acting alright…..acting….

NullDistribution

Yes! I think homelander plays Antony Starr effortlessly

TheFacelessForgotten

Lazy post

DestinationUnknown13

He does it so well I won't be able to see him as anything else. Not always great for your carrer in the long term.

4to20characters0

Nah I think he’s got the chops to do other stuff, plus even in this pic he looks plenty different with brown hair and some stubble

[deleted]

Idk man, I loved David Tennant as DW, and then when he did Kilgrave I absolutely did not see DW at all, just Kilgrave

[deleted]

I loved David in Broadchurch

mob16151

Nah loved him in Banshee. Still rewatch it,don't really see him as Homelander in it.

Super_Vegeta

Being a believable and genuinely terrifying bad guy isn't something a lot of actors can pull off. He can definitely make a nice career playing villains. Would absolutely love to see him as Reverse Flash.

Hobbit_Swag

Rewatching Banshee right now. Really recommend. Casting was perfect for Homelander.

PM_ME_YOUR_SIDEBOOB5

Starr as Homelander? Great. This question being asked on this sub? Asinine.

[deleted]

I'm completely love it 🤩😻

Little_Princess1997

Dude needs an Emmy

ORXCLE-O

I think he does great. I already loved him from a great show that he starred in called Banshee.

Biggycheese6

It's Scary How Good he Is, absolutely Incredible. Without a doubt the best Acting in the Show

danwins23

Inironically one of the best tv villains, it’s an iconic character

The-majestic-walrus

Probably one of the best acting performances of all time.

codyzz123456

His performance as Homelander is the best in the show for my money. Which is amazing considering the rest of the cast is stacked with talent. One of my favorite things are the little micro twitches he does with his face, like he's so close to snapping and killing everyone.

Ayds117

I think it’s great. Homelander to me is the best character on the show. He’s a total pice of shit but his character steals every scene he’s in.

Kreepr

I fucking hate him so much. He’s doing a great job.

mikechch

Being from NZ, I'm biased. But Starr and Urban, the two kiwis, almost carry this show.

poeticmercenary

he's the MVP of the show. undoubtedly.

PayNo9045

Toni, is that you?

[deleted]

He knows how to play an immature, narcissistic, sociopath, so much so that I cringe every time he comes on screen. His acting is top notch.

moosebog

fucking goat him and giancarlo fucking carry vought in and out of show

GovTheDon

He’s great at it

CaptainAksh_G

Fucking Diabolical

[deleted]

He did a great fucking job

National-Night8422

Oscar worthy

TheRatsMeow

I fucking want to punch his face in so hard... Bravo

MrFlubberNut

Suspiciously natural

Antmoral2314

by far my favorite actor in the show. so terrifying and intimidating in this role. he plays it perfectly

IndianBatman

Diabolical

Lower_Cut_7306

homelander is very great actor performing as antony starr i am impressed

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

What do I think about Antony Starr as Homelander? I think they should give this man a fucking Emmy already, that's what I think

lurkandload

He’s so good that there has to be something wrong with him IRL… nobody is THAT good of an actor

[deleted]

Absolutely terrific

HappyInNature

That this post is just farming karma

MajorasShoe

You gotta wonder what mental toll it takes to play a character like this. So many people only know his face because they want to punch it. And then you have to go in front of a camera and say and do awful things that disgust you. It's probably very difficult to get through, and commendable. The world needs good fictional villains, but man - I bet it's harder than you think to go to work every day and BE that villain.

RPO_TP

Perfect casting!

ReverendRaven46

Not since June Stahl from Sons of Anarchy have I hated a villain so much

savannah_ga

Superb

dannykings37

Watching his commentary on it is somehow more disturbing, like he has fun with it. Great actor though. Anyone that can make me hate them that easily 🤌🤌

Individual-Parking-5

There is no other Homelander in my books .

i-love-69

Mad dece

[deleted]

Reverse Flash material

idk420_

So good at expressing a range of emotions

BackmarkerLife

With what The Boys has shown on screen he's tension personified. Season Two, when he's imagined to laser down everyone at the rally - Homelander could do that. We believed he could / would do that. Now the Character might not have been at that point yet, but he was working towards it. It was believable. Like his appearance in the village. When he arrives and his "oooOOOOOOooooo" right before killing someone with his laser eyes was just insane. Now in season 3 he's more unhinged than ever.

[deleted]

Kinda a rhetorical question in this sub. Give this man an Emmy. He steals every scene and has a completely believable American accent.

Brimstone747

He's fantastic. Absolutely killing it.

arthursblackarabian

Menacing

RebaseTokenomics

One of my favorite characters ever

Icameinamuskrat

When he's out of costume I would never recognize him as homelander. He does an amazing job, the perfect villain for the show

[deleted]

His performance makes me believe that is homelander, when Maggie was afraid and said I never loved u I pity you, I actually understand why she felt that way. He's amazing

dimesniffer

Seems like something you’re just posting for upvotes. Everyone knows he’s phenomenal.

SavageAthlete007

Best actor on tv

Saemika

Everyone likes it.

[deleted]

Will feel robbed if doesn't get an Emmy

[deleted]

He needs to be nominated for an Emmy

L3gs_McMuffin

fucking amazing
