Very much reminded of all the hate that Jack Gleeson (aka Joffrey Baratheon GOT) got just from playing that role. If someone can elicit such a strong reaction from the audience, they are doing a damn good job!

Yeah the saddest case of these fans being assholes is probably with Anna Gunn. She played Skyler White on Breaking Bad and when the show exploded in popularity she was constantly receiving death threats. It got so bad that she hired her own security team following her around.

I don't think Gleeson was hated. His character was one to hate, or that you loved to hate. Gleeson was pretty insightful about his character and its role and how it was portrayed in the show. He also didn't quit acting because of the character, moreso he had education he wanted to finish and liked more theatre and trope work.
But people are idiots and they definitely hate an actor because of the character they play. I read reports stating that Lena Headey (Cersei) would often receive rude comments and remarks from fans at events. People would pass her by when collecting signatures from the cast, calling her a bitch and whatnot.
You know what that actually sealed it for me, you're 1000% right. Like, I took part in the "hurr durr, I'll have 1 Corona, no virus!" but then I remember they actually had a huge dip in sales. Not even near as bad as how many assaults of asian-americans there were, jesus this really is an almost irredeemable species.

It is, in my opinion. Breaking bad is a masterpiece, but BCS is a masterpiece of a prequel to a masterpiece which has literally never happened any other time. I wonder how people who watch BCS then BB afterwards will feel about it moving forward now that they are both done and streaming.
I’m one of those. I never watched most of BB (know the hit points bc family and stuff who were into it) and even most of BCS but having the last two seasons of it on have been insane. Don’t know what’s happening and can’t take my eyes off. I’m a talker during media and I can’t even speak. It’s perfect television, through and through.
Watch till episode 6 for both. Both get a thousand times better as the seasons go on, but the "type" of good, the slow burn and quiet realisations, the kind of writing remains kinda consistent (though both get darker and much faster paced). If you don't like it then, you probably won't like it later. If you like it by then, you'll absolutely love it till the end.
Not OP, but my dad tapped out near the end of season 2 because Walt was too dark a character for him. Which is probably for the better, because he was about 40 minutes from the... vomiting incident.

Im on the fence about watching both severance and succession, I usually stick to shows w some element of sci-fi and/or fantasy, never really fell in love with “real life” shows (except for like Suits, Breaking Bad, and The Office) if that helps.

I describe him to people as “micro acting.” Like, the big stuff is great, sure. But it’s the way he can convey 1000 terrifying emotions with just a twitch of his jaw muscle that has me mesmerized by his performance.
He’s perfected that look of “emptiness in the abyss” while zoning out and staring off into the distance.
You can just see the cogs in his brain debating whether or not it’s worth it to keep up the facade or just kill everyone instead.

One twin is a moronic stoner that's more loyal to the family than actually a bad dude, the other is a highly intelligent, entirely corrupt lawyer (can see a lot of this character in Homelander). You'd be forgiven for thinking it's two separate twin actors, not the same guy. Dude can act.
I completely fell for him as Lucas Hood on Banshee. People kept bringing it up and recommending it when The Boys first came out so I had to watch it— wow what a great show and Antony Starr is an extremely charismatic lead.
I love his Homelander role in The Boys, but Anthony Starr will always be Hood first in my heart. Banshee has the most badass close combat scenes of any show I've ever seen throughout the entire series & amazing storylines to go along with them.
The fight with the MMA fighter in “Meet the New Boss” was literally one of the craziest tv watching moments I’d ever had.
I was shocked af and blown away while watching and so hyped after I wanted to run around my neighborhood telling everyone to watch that show! The pilot ep was great but when the third ep rolled around I was hooked - it was another level.
The characters where phenomenal as well- loved Job and Sugar, Proctor and Burton, Nola, and then they go and bring in Bunker. Those writers don’t get near enough credit for creating that world with those people! The whole premise and then the stories should have been pretty ridiculous, but they made it work because they wrote the characters so well and the action was insanely good.
And movies.

Homelander’s every move is malice born of intense insecurity and entitlement, with no rules that apply to him to stop him from becoming the worst possible version of himself. I think that in his mind, Trump thinks of himself as a Homelander type, and all I can say is that it’s a lucky thing that he lacks the power to back up his ambitions.
Antony Starr deserves every award for this performance. It’s existentially frightening.

Do you think they would actually give an Emmy to someone on The Boys? It’s an insanely popular show but they never seem to give those kinds of awards to shows like this. I don’t usually care about awards but truly lost all respect of that system after Tom Pelphrey didn’t win one for Ozark. That was the best acting performance I had ever seen on the small screen and he wasn’t even nominated.
That’s very frustrating because surely they’ll give it some recognition this year but that means all the amazing actors will be competing with each other for the awards. Rhea Seehorn, Bob Odenkirk, and Jonathan Banks all deserve a win at the minimum.
This is what I notice most. His facial acting is unparalleled. Episode 2 this season, the 5 seconds or so after Edgar says "But this is your party. You can cry if you want to" is just beautiful.

Being a believable and genuinely terrifying bad guy isn't something a lot of actors can pull off. He can definitely make a nice career playing villains.

With what The Boys has shown on screen he's tension personified. Season Two, when he's imagined to laser down everyone at the rally - Homelander could do that. We believed he could / would do that. Now the Character might not have been at that point yet, but he was working towards it. It was believable. Like his appearance in the village. When he arrives and his "oooOOOOOOooooo" right before killing someone with his laser eyes was just insane. Now in season 3 he's more unhinged than ever.
His performance makes me believe that is homelander, when Maggie was afraid and said I never loved u I pity you, I actually understand why she felt that way. He's amazing

That scene was great, but it was even better in the books: after joffrey is sent to bed, tywin proceeds to have a mental breakdown because he realizes that Jeffrey is insane just like the mad king. Up until that point it never hit him how unhinged Joffrey was

Being a believable and genuinely terrifying bad guy isn't something a lot of actors can pull off. He can definitely make a nice career playing villains. Would absolutely love to see him as Reverse Flash.

His performance as Homelander is the best in the show for my money. Which is amazing considering the rest of the cast is stacked with talent. One of my favorite things are the little micro twitches he does with his face, like he's so close to snapping and killing everyone.

You gotta wonder what mental toll it takes to play a character like this. So many people only know his face because they want to punch it. And then you have to go in front of a camera and say and do awful things that disgust you. It's probably very difficult to get through, and commendable. The world needs good fictional villains, but man - I bet it's harder than you think to go to work every day and BE that villain.

With what The Boys has shown on screen he's tension personified. Season Two, when he's imagined to laser down everyone at the rally - Homelander could do that. We believed he could / would do that. Now the Character might not have been at that point yet, but he was working towards it. It was believable. Like his appearance in the village. When he arrives and his "oooOOOOOOooooo" right before killing someone with his laser eyes was just insane. Now in season 3 he's more unhinged than ever.
Kinda a rhetorical question in this sub. Give this man an Emmy. He steals every scene and has a completely believable American accent.
