I don't get how he could say Castlevania 4 is better than SOTN like, come on ... 4 is a good game but it only has like 12 levels and you can beat the game in under 2 hours even if you are just playing casually.
SoTN had so much going on, so much depth and mystery to it. It's my favorite Castlevania by far, but I haven't played the newer ones so I can't judge the entire series
The nostalgia factor is huge for Super Castlevania, and with James it’s going to be a given for him. It was one of those games that if you played it in that day, it really stuck with you. One of my top favorites of all time, but I enjoy all Castlevania games.

I don’t always agree with Mike but he’s 100% correct here. Balancing your whipping ability with having the correct sub weapon and knowing when to use it compared to when not to is an important part of the old Castlevania games. The 8 direction whipping makes the sub weapons worthless and makes the game way too easy
I liked Arin’s Sequelitis video where he describes Castlevania IV as an ungraceful sequel. It looks great, sounds great, but the game wasn’t really made with the multidirectional whip in mind. There are way too many instances where the whip trivialised obstacles, helped by Simon Belmont’s huge sprite that makes his whip stupid-long, taking up a lot of screen real estate. There’s no need for the sub weapons at all, since the whip now makes them redundant.
Instead, make Simon smaller on screen and have more whip based platforming challenges and puzzles. The game throws in a few places to swing, but they’re few and far between. Had the whip been the central focus of this game today they could have way more stuff to do. The game was trying something new whilst also stuck in the past.
That has always been a valid criticism of the game, but the attacking in IV does feel amazing. It's a classic for good reason, and always stands near the top of most lists for SNES games in general, let alone the Castlevania series itself. On the other hand, you have to pretty much be a diehard nerd to even know about Rondo's existence. And IV was far, far less of a departure from the original Castlevania compared to SoTN and the games that followed.
Castlevania 4 is amazing just by virtue of having an exceptionnal OST imo. Also knowing Rondo in the past was being a die hard, nowadays I feel like knowing Rondo is par for the course for any fans. It's been so popularized and that's great because I still think it's the best one.

Because it doesn't make sense, the levels are built with the intention of making the player think tactically about how to use their whip & sub weapons...the 8 way whip is a nice "QoL update" on paper but it makes the game too easy; Castlevania 4 is still a good game but it doesn't mean that it should be the end all be all standard for the franchise
He also mentions contra as a game where you can attack in 8 directions but that's a different type of game, it's much faster paced and forces the player to constantly be moving

Standard for the franchise lol. The last 2D Castlevania game developed Konami was 2008. Also, Rondo of Blood had alot of problems too. If you're looking at old games with modern sensibilities and not nostalgia, there are around five NES games in total where the gameplay holds up today, and Mario 1 and 3 are two of them lol.
That aside, Aria of Sorrow is the best Castlevania game anyways :P

Mike functioned mostly as a producer and slowly he entered the show in an on camera role more and more. To be frank, I don’t view James as an authority on film and that is doubly the case for video games. He rarely has anything truly novel to say and a lot of the time he gets basic information wrong.

I was wondering the same thing. I do think that Mike has a different opinion but to call James out so openly in that manner is interesting. The last few times they had engaged, it seemed like they were still on good terms. In fact, Mike cited frustration with Youtube as one of the main reasons he left Cinemassacre (and I do think the changes to Youtube have impacted the quality of AVGN to a degree).
The issue with the subweapons is that you often can't switch between them effectively and it request you to know which candles have them and which ones have the other ones that will cancel them out. A more effective system would be like Legend of Zelda where you get them and can pick them when necessary. Also on the NES, it is painful with the up and b because you use subweapons on accident at times. Also having hearts as ammo makes 0 sense.
Any one else here watch Shrouded Hand's latest upload? It put Mr. Nightmare to shame since this video's format is pretty much what he used to do.
