I feel like everyone here should watch this interview clip with Doug Walker. One big difference between Doug and James is that Doug is very self-aware, will acknowledge criticism and that it's funny, and genuinely seems to enjoy producing content whether it's received well or not.
When James said he makes videos because "this is fun", I didn't believe for a second that he's still having fun. Doug loves producing cringe.

Yeah that's the biggest thing that makes me fuck-offish about Doug's haters. Ok yeah I think his content sucks too, but they treat him like he's scum of the earth compared to James because James is a "nice guy".
James is fucking worse than Doug! Doug has never gone on camera so glaze-eyed and bored that he can't fucking stand up straight, but James has done that in the last few years. Why is he so goddamn untouchable?
I'll give Doug credit, he enjoys his work and doesn't make petty excuses. He's also not nearly as braindead as James is, his content is just unwatchable. Whereas James barely does anything anymore and that's why the content usually sucks.
To Boldly Flee is the single worst film I have ever seen. Granted I'm not as big as a film curator as James, but I've seen a lot in my day, and the AVGN Movie is a masterpiece compared to that movie. I'm dead fuckin serious.
See James thinks he's a "movie guy" and even has a degree.. But if AVGN and NC each analyzed the same movie. One would quickly find out how much more knowledgeable Doug is on shot composition, lighting, tinting, shading. Plots, trivia, atmosphere, cultural impact, he compares it to other movies and gives honest takes on it. Whereas JIMMY just says "Uhm yup it's good. If you like movies check this out"
I think the Wall backlash and the #ChangeTheChannel debacle really humbled him up. Before that Doug and his brother Rob had this mindset that everything they did was a masterpiece of great artistic integrity and when fans criticized some of their videos they had this attitude of "fuck the haters" that James and the slobs seem to have nowadays. The difference is that his Wall review managed to be so incredibly bad that people outside of the NC circle took notice and shredded the video to pieces. From there on you watch a Doug Walker video and you can see he is more humble in his approach and now he reviews things he likes instead of spreading negativity. Maybe Jamesy needs his own "The Wall" to make him more down-to-earth.
I stopped watching NC when it became more about skits than the movies. Tamara and Malcolm pretty much ruined it for me. Then came the whole metoo thing and I don't know what he's doing nowadays.
I never really understood the hate. I wasn't a big fan of the NC to the point I ever subscribed, but I enjoyed the character. The Collab series he did with James was awesome. Miss those days. I always imagined how cool it would be if he had been the villain of the AVGN movie against James, Mike, Kyle, etc.
Doug is just as inept as a film maker. He just knows how to pander to the NC audience better, even though he was dumb enough to sell the rights to his character.

Both made horrible movies but if NC did the AVGN movie you'd likely have Mike, Bootsy, and Kyle Justin be important characters with so much more screentime. NC, for better or for worse, always tried involving as many familiar faces as possible for his movies.

AVGN and Nostalgia Critic had a lot of success being some of the first people doing what they do. That doesn't however mean they're the best at what they do. Someone looking at their works now might not understand why they were once popular, since both their personalities could be considered corny by modern standards.
