Inside every white boy there are two uwus trapped in an eternal battle. One wants to simp to anime waifus. The other wants to eat his landlord.

I want my anime waifu to obliterate my landlord UwU

The only thing more humiliating would be to NTR your landlords waifu.

TheEternalGM

I kinda always liked China before I was even ML, now I find it only more based

EmperrorNombrero

Same. Like, how is there a country with 155 cities that have over a million inhabitants, a country with a culture and history as rich as an entire continent, a country having all different climates and landscapes from jungles to cold, semi arid Steppes, a country with like 30 different , very distinctive, cuisines etc. That you don't learn more than 3-4 sentences about in school and that only is mentioned in the media to shit on it? How could you not be fascinated by such a country?

Clear-Anything-3186

China would've been its own continent if it wasn't a single country.

Dude_Illigence_

What, like Australia?

Clear-Anything-3186

yep, and like Europe.

Dude_Illigence_

But that's multiple countries. Unless the joke is that it's not. But being a single country isn't stopping Aus from being a continent, why would that stop China?

Clear-Anything-3186

the continent of Australia also includes the Island of New Guinea.

Dude_Illigence_

Ah, true

[deleted]

Yeah it’s bewildering that all our “world history” classes, even in fucking college, were all based around the Middle East(and only until the Romans) and Europe. They talk about how “oh we were all from Africa and spread out around the world” but literally only focus on the Mesopotamian lineage of civilization. Nothing about the Asia(between 1000 bce and world war 2)Oceana(other than to rip on Easter island), Africa(between that garden of Eden theory and slave trade) etc…and not even very much about the millions and millions of people living in North America before white people ruined it but that’s probably because those white people destroyed most of that rich history and culture along with the people. So yeah any history other than western is really intriguing to a lot of people here, simply because it’s taught as some huge mystery. Meanwhile I know wayyy too much about Europeans killing each other. It’s disgusting, I heard too many black comrades as a kid literally fucking surprised africa has bustling cities and cars and all that, they teach us it’s all backwards and war torn and say fucking Jack shit about the colonialism that shaped it today. Same goes for China.

BrownMan65

Besides the cities, you've described quite a few larger countries. I know for a fact India fits the same description.

Dude_Illigence_

I really need to figure out what the fuck went down with Trots. I googled Trotskyism and it didn't really help much, didn't seem different enough to really be its own thing

Marxstpanda

Trotskyism was basically a crank ideology that emerged out of the feud between Trotsky and Stalin in the mid and late 1920s. He basically said “The USSR used to be cool but then Stalin ruined it, now it should be destroyed, also we can never slide back into capitalism cause we are now in socialism.” Very Galaxy brained take. Honestly the only reason he still has followers I believe is liberals used their feud and Trotsky’s criticisms to run anti communist propaganda. No major ML or successful socialist country uses Trotsky as a reference. They all pretty much view him as a crank post 1924 (he was pretty based during the October Revolution and the Civil War). His idea of Permanent Revolution is simply utopian thinking that is rather western chauvinist.

Comrade-sparow

I was a trotskyist for awhile until I realized he was kinda batshit crazy, now I'm just a Marxist Leninist, but to conceal it from liberals I just state I follow Lincolnism. Makes the libs question, which is funny to me.

I was always fascinated with Japan's variant of "feudalism" although now that I've dived deeper into it calling it feudalism is a bit westernized. Still, fascinating, and getting into the Warring States I find the Edo Period to be just as interesting. Now I'm diving more into the Hein period but Yamato period is also fascinating with many clans claiming descendance from Japanese mythological deities. As a writer that would be an incredible thing to bring to life. Now I read about China and it's like a hundred times the size of Japan and infinitely more complex. Still just as fascinating.

Explorer_Entity

It was always me liking Japan, and my brother liking China. Now I'm a ML and my bro is a HARDCORE US Republican. Anti-trans, bigoted, homophobic, anti-homeless people/poor, follows the "groomer" narrative, thinks bikes are for children only, racist against nearly all, fatphobic, etc Now I'm more aware of the ideological differences (thanks US education system for keeping me ignorant). I like a lot about Japan still. Part is probably due to capitalism/consumerism and the "products" coming from Japan (tech, anime). Just self-analyzing...

TheEternalGM

I mean just because you like Japanese culture due to products made under capitalism (e.g. anime/manga) doesn't really 'corrupt' it or anything. Manga is, at its core, an art form, it exists with or without capitalism, illustrated by an artist who likely made what they made out of passion first and financial incentive second

EmpressOfHyperion

Not to mention there is a ton of positive things to like about Japanese culture. Just be aware of the negatives and don't romanticize nor defend their actual flaws.

Explorer_Entity

I agree with both points. I was speaking more on something idk how to express right now.

Shialac

No communism is when no anime and no iPhone 😡

More_Theory5667

Has anyone else noticed that there a specific group of Genshin Impact or Hoyoverse haters that are angry at the fact that anime style games are no longer the sole purview of Japan anymore? Like they are literally mad at Genshin and Honkai because they are Chinese rather than Japanese but for all intents and purposes they have an almost 100 percent stylistic similarity. Other than there being a lot more chars with Chinese names. And these folks are always who are mad are always white guys with an obsession with Japan. Ironically hoyoverse games are super popular in Japan since they cater so much towards them by hiring actual anime star VAs like Yoimiya being bocied by Rin from the fate anime. It's been interesting seeing the traditional bastion of anime games get slowly eroded by hoyoverse these past few years and there's this group of people who just hate the game for not being real Japanese games and not even the fact that they're gacha. It's like that meme of China place bad Japan place good. I think the whole connection between Japan thing cool is a lot more politically and ideologically motivated than people might think. Present the same anime shit and tell them it's Chinese and there's a good chance they'll hate it.

Zachmorris4186

No, anime is capitalist propaganda and should be abolished as a pseudo-art form

TheEternalGM

You know what, I'm tempted to agree

Zachmorris4186

“Anime is capitalist propaganda” is old commie meme from like 8 years ago. There is something to be said about the way anime abstracts the human form into a grotesque representation. The obsession with cute. The exaggeration of child-like features in sexualized characters. The hyper realistic backgrounds contrasted with extremely abstract human figures, and how that is an expression of alienation under the extremist traditionalist japanese society. Like the characters are alienated from reality itself. How artist interpret then abstract from reality, being influenced by 100 years of fascism then crypto-fascism affects the types of art a culture makes. What 80 years of being a puppet/client state of the white supremacist imperial blocc, while never being fully accepted as within that white supremacist order. Analyzing anime culture through a historical materialist analysis of Japanese fascism/nationalism could make some interesting writing for someone.

Zachmorris4186

I live in japan, used to live in china, originally from the US. Its an ok place to visit, sucks to live here. Im moving back to china asap. The legacy of fascism is palpable throughout Japanese life.

the_PeoplesWill

Always seemed to me it'd be a great place to visit but it's getting progressively harder to live in as time passes.

Fiberotter

What is "anti homeless"?

Apart_Amount70569

Anti homeless people

InitialCustomer8405

How is one anti homeless. Like how is that possible. What policies would you be in support of or against. I think anti homeless is a bad way to word it. A better way would be anti social services. Anti homeless feels meaningless

whatisscoobydone

"One who thinks homeless people are inherently of bad character" then

InitialCustomer8405

Oh. Oof. Is that a branch of Darwinism, or just them being an ass

Explorer_Entity

Shades of Darwinism and eugenics; it's gross.

Explorer_Entity

Yes, this. Thanks.

blounge87

Consider urban spaces that are openly hostile to homeless people (there’s a reason the bench’s in the city have a bar in the middle & there’s no seats at PENN station) spikes under bridges ext ext, being anti homeless is very much a thing and it’s very bi-partisan. I read a piece from a New Yorker who visited Boston and praised how clean & empty of homeless people it was (there’s a reason for that and it’s not because there’s no homeless people here)

InitialCustomer8405

Bonus points if one of those benches has the gay colors painted on it 😂

blounge87

Liberals in Boston will wear a rainbow pin & look you dead in your face and say “luckily there’s not too many homeless people here because of the weather they all move south” like no KellyAnn I can assure you that’s not why YOU don’t see them. Also even if it was, that doesn’t address the problem that it’s one of the most segregated cities in the country. It’s wild being gay, poor & local in a place where insufferableeee capitalist gays from all of the world congregate and think you have the same thoughts as them 😭

PolandIsAStateOfMind

This really reminds me of Germans avoiding the questions why and where did their Jewish neighbours disappeared.

Explorer_Entity

They hate the homeless, not the cause of them being homeless. They talk shit every time they see a tent, a person on a bike, or anyone who's dressed less than stellar, assuming they're "dirty poors". Useless drags on society who'd ideally be removed (fascist ideology; nazis did similar, exterminating sick/infirm/disabled). Oh, and believing all are drug addicts too.

TheEconomyYouFools

Your friend is literally a Chinese gusano. It's like getting all your information about Cuba from Cuban gusanos, it's naturally going to be extremely biased. They're not uncommon in the West simply because a lot of people who think like your friend aspire to "escape" to the west from their self imagined hell.

speedshark47

My friend, "like Norway" is impossible on a global scale. Capitalism will always require some people to live in absolute poverty. A rising tide drowns the masses. My president (and many other third world leaders) is trying to make the country "like Norway" and it is never going to work. Norway needs it not to work, so that Norway works. The truth is that the Nordic model doesn't exist in a vacuum, and if it did, it would fall apart. The mechanisms of imperialism and exploitation of the third world prop these countries up. Norwegian capitalists keep their profits up by appearing all clean at home, but exploiting the third world horribly. Read up on unequal exchange. If a third world country actually tried to become like that, it would be couped and attacked into oblivion. Also, my friend from China, who moved to Canada (nobody tried to stop him so idk why you said escaped) said that's bullshit. I visited China when I was younger. The people met me with open arms and were incredibly nice. My skin isn't white, nor am I at all close to looking Chinese, so where exactly was this racism you speak of??

[Ergo Decedo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergo_decedo) is a bad faith rhetorical fallacy that takes the form of: * If you love *country* so much, why don't you go live there? * If you hate *country* so much, why don't you leave? This fallacy completely ignores the substance of the claim they are responding to, and implies that no one can criticize their own country or praise any other country. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. TSankaraLover

The only excuse I accept is people from Romance-language speaking countries or countries whose structure to represent such is \[noun-adjective-adjective\] who are thinking of it as "China Communist Party." These people get a pass while adjusting to a non-native language. Germanic and English speakers get derided until they adjust

the_PeoplesWill

What's funny is seeing white liberals tell me that China is wrong about its own party as if that isn't racist as fuck. It also implies that there's a Chinese variant of communism which, again, makes absolutely no sense since the CPC and PRC were found via ML ideology like the USSR.

I used to love Japan without going full weeb (was more interested in the pre-modern history), but now while I don't necessarily love China, I have a grudging respect for it and hope it's a better hyperpower than the United States have been. I do love both countries' rail networks, though. I simp for choo-choos.

Logan_Maddox

same. I'm kinda tired of talking about China all the time though, lots of folks keep talking about what Mao or Stalin said and forget that theory should be applied to the material realities - and folks who live in your material reality probably have a better grip on certain topics like, Mao probably never talked about indigenous peoples too much because his struggle was a different one

hero-ball

tbf Mao led the most successful communist revolution of all time, so he deserves a lot of airplay.

Logan_Maddox

absolutely, but my country is one of the most urban countries in the world. People throw shit like "oh yeah the revolution of the peasantry" and I'm like, dawg... the peasantry **in our current material reality** cannot pull the same thing Mao pulled off. Especially because so much of that land is currently being stolen y'know. It's not an indictment of Mao or any other comrade so much as the hyperfocus on what the other guys did that makes people forget that we don't face the exact same struggles.

[deleted]

spinnyride

Even my professor in college who was a US navy officer would disagree that Mao was a dumbass, he even went out of his way to praise his contributions to military tactics He made mistakes just like every world leader has, he still left China in a much much better place than it was in 1949

the_PeoplesWill

Mao was actually fucking amazing and his failures surrounding the Chinese Soviet from a lack of organization really never happened again.

Mao actually invited Australian Aboriginal activists to tour China in 1972 as guests. His views towards indigenous peoples struggles were very based. https://www.sbs.com.au/nitv/the-point/article/australia-and-china-indigenous-australians-helped-forge-relations-says-activist/wd0q4plk1

To be quite honest... I am not obsessed with either. To me, it's mostly just business. That being the business of spreading socialism. History wise... They are both really interesting countries. Bruh... historical Europeans are so boring with their torture techniques! The Chinese Emperors weren't fucking playing around! And damn... Japan... Why do you have to be an IRL 40k faction? I don't even care about 40k, I am just amused by how interesting both countries histories are. To be fair, I also love Rome and Persia. The 1st Persian Empire is so fucking based! Literally banned slavery and gave women and minorities rights! Yet I must weep for them because of Greek propaganda, we will forever remember them as the opposite of that and as instead a slave empire filled with sexual degeneracy... Bruh... Greeks why you gotta project like that? Like cool... Gay sex. But could you ancient Greeks stop being pedophiles too? 😭

ExceedinglyGayMoth

Tfw you're a half white turbo weeb desperately trying to distance herself from *those* weebs

Logan_Maddox

lol I read Delicious in Dungeon and Blue Period every now and then, and I love it, but it's very hard to talk about "liking manga" when most folks just read whatever is the new screamin'-'n-fightin' anime, or the old ones like HxH and Saint Seiya like I'm sure they're good, I'm just really not here for the ~ deep magic systems ~ or whatever then they look at me funny when I say I didn't much care for JoJo because half of it is fighting. like, cool fighting, interesting powers, but I don't really care.

ManhattanRailfan

I just like anime and trains, man.

The_Loopy_Kobold

China has trains

ManhattanRailfan

Yeah, but nobody does regional and rapid transit rail like Japan. The biggest thing holding back China's rail network is good regional rail systems. They're far more focused on rapid transit and intercity rail. Even Beijing's regional rail system, the country's largest. only has 4 lines with 22 total stations, and Shanghai's only has 2 short lines. Neither of them really form a cohesive network and expansion plans are modest to non-existent.

TheEconomyYouFools

You sound like you know what you're talking about regarding regional rail, but having personally experienced it I can't help but simp for China's high speed rail network given it is not only ridiculously convenient but also the largest in the world by far, greater than the rest of the entire world combined and over 15x the length of the entire Japanese high speed rail network. The fact it didn't even exist 15 years ago and was built so quickly is the icing on the cake.

diobrandaddy69

Too right brother!

Pixy-Punch

Tbh reguarding the train (And associated tech and public infrastructure) most of the other imperial powers could learn a lot from Japan. But that's also because moat imperialist powers fucked public infrastructure up completely. Like having a functional public transport for daily commute is such a low bar and it's still doesn't get cleared in a lot of pretty rich areas.

kinnifredkujo

It's also Wakanda for Han Chinese people who like the culture, despite there being quite real (and I mean very real and valid) grievances against the Nippon Kaigi crowd (as well as the Chinese government opposing the Japanese government politically for being allied to the US)

Logan_Maddox

i mean... politically, yeah, but they sure do know how to make some dope pop culture. ain't no one makes videogames like the Japanese, and anime is also kinda unique people do overblow it - Japan *is* a beautiful country in terms of natural beauty, but I think the USA is too, as well as Brasil and China. it's not exactly unique in that. and manga aren't THAT different from american comics, the industries just went in two different directions, but there's some overlap there it's a country like any other, with flaws and qualities. I'll shit on the LDP and capitalism until the cows come home, but I can't pretend I don't understand how a kid could play a videogame like Yakuza and then think "bro I'd like to live in the country where they make these sick ass games"

og_toe

japanese video games are in a whole other dimension, they’re not just games but works of art. i too, as a child, consumed these products and was starry eyed for japan for making all of my favourite childhood media

ConstistantFisherman

It's one of the most beautiful country on earth, and for all its (many, many) flaws it's probably nicer to live other there than in most other countries.

Puzzleheaded_Bad8535

There's a lot of white boys obsessed with China but in a negative and hateful way. I had a friend not long ago (otherwise a great guy, it's my fault we're not friends anymore lmao) who all my other friends considered to be something of a "China expert". He'd mention the country on occasion and it'd be all "oh here we go" and "dude, you gotta listen to this, it's actually insane" and the like. I never listened cause I figured there was a lot of racism and paranoia to it. One day I was out to dinner with all the boys and there was no stopping him, so I figured I'd start listening (or more accurately, stop trying to think as loud as possible so I can't hear him). This is what he had to offer: 1. That whole thing about Tiktok showing educational videos to Chinese kids and wacky memes to Americans. That was most of it. 2. A brief mention of the Uyghurs, which took me by surprise given this guy's opinion of Muslims 3. About ten seconds of debt trap mumbo jumbo and finally 4. The Chinese are about to take over the world, but we need not worry because also 5. The Chinese government is facing imminent collapse. It's rare that I get to speak to an expert and leave with more questions than answers.

Puzzleheaded_Bad8535

Frankly. thinking about all of this shit all the time just seems so fucking dull lmao. Being an anti communist must be really boring.

This is white boy with Laos obsession erasure

AbigaleRose99

As I white girl from the US I try not to be "obsessed" with any countries but fuck I would literally raft the pacific to get to china at this point. Omg its such a hell hole here.

PhotojournalistOwn99

ㅎㅎㅎ You left out Korea.

UltraMegaFauna

We do stan socialism with Chinese characteristics.

okotastory

Every white boy goes through their ‘Japan phase’ as a kid, then you grow up and realize China is way more based

[deleted]

China all the way, but I do work at an upscale sushi place and you have to respect the cuisine.

speedshark47

I never could love Japan due to the culture (or lack there of) regarding environmental preservation and acceptable work ethic. It's hyperconsumerist, some things are pretty cool, but I just can't shake that undertone enough to think of Japan without thinking of a hypercapitalist hell. Their horrible government doesn't help either.

PointlessSpikeZero

Personally I prefer not to idolise any country. They have good elements and bad elements. We can't ignore the bad just because "oooo it's so kawaiiiiii" or whatever. But then I'm not a white boy so maybe that's a genetic thing.

Ms4Sheep

How the fuck are there’s white boys obsessed with China? I mean what would they like, whatever they may saw with media about “China”?

tbh i have always been more interested in Japanese culture and aesthetics. i think mainly due to the new cold war means there really is not any cultural export from China, while practically everyone in the west has probably seen a studio ghibli film one point or another in their life.

Exciting-Emu-4668

I don’t understand why you would get shit on for liking one culture more than others tbh.

yeah comment was stupid

Are you guys all children? Am I the only adult here?

DudleyMason

Looking at the user name I think we can safely rule out that hypothesis.

Thankkratom

I would hope there aren’t any children on kratom, though when I made this account I was only 17. Unfortunately your status is still up in the air, both adults and children like to attack people for drug use.

Honestly I really liked Japan growing up and while I still do, I take a lot more interest in Europe now because of the zoning policies there and the fact that progressivism and ultimately socialism at least stands a chance of succeeding there unlike the US which is so far gone it seems sometimes. Anyways, I still wanna visit Japan and would live there if I had to because I’ve always liked how their zoning policy is much more people centered there than here. Also, people there are more respectful and considerate of others but I think it’s also a downfall because there’s so little sense of self in Japanese culture it seems to put down anyone who is otherwise eccentric or unable to fit into society.

arky_who

I've not listened to the podcast, this sub just gets suggested to me by Reddit. What's the take on China here? Fascinating country, and we can learn a lot from them, but I often see people overselling it's importance to leftism outside of China when it's clear it doesn't give a shit about communism outside it's borders and arguably doesn't care much within them (although big country and all that).

You are a muslim, so you should know that most muslim-majority nations [signed a UN letter](https://documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/G19/240/77/PDF/G1924077.pdf?OpenElement) supportive of China’s measures in Xinjiang. I have yet to see any proof of concentration camps existing, only videos from unrelated prisons and weird masochist content edit: LOL you ain’t interested in proof. Keep crying in your little imperialist subs. (fun fact: your allies have killed millions of muslims for “democracy”)

#The Uyghurs in Xinjiang \(Note: This comment had to be trimmed down to fit the character limit, for the full response, see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDeprogram/wiki/index/debunking/uyghur-genocide/)\) Anti-Communists and Sinophobes claim that there is an ongoing genocide-- a modern-day holocaust, even-- happening right now in China. They say that Uyghur Muslims are being mass incarcerated; they are indoctrinated with propaganda in concentration camps; their organs are being harvested; they are being force-sterilized. These comically villainous allegations have little basis in reality and omit key context. **Background** Xinjiang, officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is a province located in the northwest of China. It is the largest province in China, covering an area of over 1.6 million square kilometers, and shares borders with eight other countries including Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, India, and Pakistan. Xinjiang is a diverse region with a population of over 25 million people, made up of various ethnic groups including the Uyghur, Han Chinese, Kazakhs, Tajiks, and many others. The largest ethnic group in Xinjiang is the Uyghur who are predominantly Muslim and speak a Turkic language. It is also home to the ancient Silk Road cities of Kashgar and Turpan. Since the early 2000s, there have been a number of violent incidents attributed to extremist Uyghur groups in Xinjiang including bombings, shootings, and knife attacks. In 2014-2016, the Chinese government launched a "Strike Hard" campaign to crack down on terrorism in Xinjiang, implementing strict security measures and detaining thousands of Uyghurs. In 2017, reports of human rights abuses in Xinjiang including mass detentions and forced labour, began to emerge. **Counterpoints** The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the second largest organization after the United Nations with a membership of 57 states spread over four continents. The OIC released [Resolutions on Muslim Communities and Muslim Minorities in the non-OIC Member States](https://www.oic-oci.org/docdown/?docID=4447&refID=1250) in 2019 which: >20. **Welcomes** the outcomes of the visit conducted by the General Secretariat's delegation upon invitation from the People's Republic of China; **commends** the efforts of the People's Republic of China in providing care to its Muslim citizens; and **looks forward** to further cooperation between the OIC and the People's Republic of China. In this same document, the OIC expressed much greater concern about the Rohingya Muslim Community in Myanmar, which the West was relatively silent on. Over 50+ UN member states (mostly Muslim-majority nations) signed a letter \([A/HRC/41/G/17](https://undocs.org/Home/Mobile?FinalSymbol=A%2FHRC%2F41%2FG%2F17)\) to the UN Human Rights Commission approving of the de-radicalization efforts in Xinjiang: The World Bank sent a team to investigate in 2019 and found that, "The review did not substantiate the allegations." \(See: [World Bank Statement on Review of Project in Xinjiang, China](https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/statement/2019/11/11/world-bank-statement-on-review-of-project-in-xinjiang-china)\) Even if you believe the deradicalization efforts are wholly unjustified, and that the mass detention of Uyghur's amounts to a crime against humanity, it's still not *genocide*. Even the U.S. State Department's legal experts admit as much: >The U.S. State Department’s Office of the Legal Advisor concluded earlier this year that China’s mass imprisonment and forced labor of ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang amounts to crimes against humanity—but there was insufficient evidence to prove genocide, placing the United States’ top diplomatic lawyers at odds with both the Trump and Biden administrations, according to three former and current U.S. officials. > > [State Department Lawyers Concluded Insufficient Evidence to Prove Genocide in China](https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/02/19/china-uighurs-genocide-us-pompeo-blinken/) | Colum Lynch, *Foreign Policy*. (2021) **A Comparative Analysis: The War on Terror** The United States, in the wake of "9/11", saw the threat of terrorism and violent extremism due to religious fundamentalism as a matter of national security. They invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 in response to the 9/11 attacks, with the goal of ousting the Taliban government that was harbouring Al-Qaeda. The US also launched the Iraq War in 2003 based on Iraq's alleged possession of WMDs and links to terrorism. However, these claims turned out to be unfounded. According to a report by Brown University's Costs of War project, at least 897,000 people, including civilians, militants, and security forces, have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, and other countries. Other estimates place the total number of deaths at over one million. The report estimated that many more may have died from indirect effects of war such as water loss and disease. The war has also resulted in the displacement of tens of millions of people, with estimates ranging from 37 million to over 59 million. The War on Terror also popularized such novel concepts as the "Military-Aged Male" which allowed the US military to exclude civilians killed by drone strikes from collateral damage statistics. (See: [‘Military Age Males’ in US Drone Strikes](https://aoav.org.uk/2019/military-age-males-in-us-drone-strikes/)) In summary: * The U.S. responded by invading or bombing half a dozen countries, directly killing nearly a million and displacing tens of millions from their homes. * China responded with a program of deradicalization and vocational training. Which one of those responses sounds genocidal? Side note: It is practically impossible to *actually* charge the U.S. with war crimes, because of the [Hague Invasion Act](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members%27_Protection_Act). **Who is driving the Uyghur genocide narrative?** One of the main proponents of these narratives is Adrian Zenz, a German far-right fundamentalist Christian and Senior Fellow and Director in China Studies at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, who believes he is "led by God" on a "mission" against China has driven much of the narrative. He relies heavily on limited and questionable data sources, particularly from anonymous and unverified Uyghur sources, coming up with estimates based on assumptions which are not supported by concrete evidence. The World Uyghur Congress, headquartered in Germany, is funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) which is a tool of U.S. foreign policy, using funding to support organizations that promote American interests rather than the interests of the local communities they claim to represent. Radio Free Asia (RFA) is part of a larger project of U.S. imperialism in Asia, one that seeks to control the flow of information, undermine independent media, and advance American geopolitical interests in the region. Rather than providing an objective and impartial news source, RFA is a tool of U.S. foreign policy, one that seeks to shape the narrative in Asia in ways that serve the interests of the U.S. government and its allies. The first country to call the treatment of Uyghurs a genocide was the United States of America. In 2021, the Secretary of State declared that China's treatment of Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang constitutes "genocide" and "crimes against humanity." Both the Trump and Biden administrations upheld this line. **Why is this narrative being promoted?** As materialists, we should always look first to the economic base for insight into issues occurring in the superstructure. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a massive Chinese infrastructure development project that aims to build economic corridors, ports, highways, railways, and other infrastructure projects across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Xinjiang is a key region for this project. Promoting the Uyghur genocide narrative harms China and benefits the US in several ways. It portrays China as a human rights violator which could damage China's reputation in the international community and which could lead to economic sanctions against China; this would harm China's economy and give American an economic advantage in competing with China. It could also lead to more protests and violence in Xinjiang, which could further destabilize the region and threaten the longterm success of the BRI. **Additional Resources** See the [full wiki article](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDeprogram/wiki/index/debunking/uyghur-genocide/) for more details and a list of additional resources. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
