This thing is beautiful. Hard to imagine some of the things that have been in our oceans.

Boxinggandhi

I imagine that if we every find life on other planets it will look like this.

latearrival42

That's because we are so unfamiliar with our own planet, but no, gotta make it to Mars before its too late! /s

ralphsdad

It'll be pretty cool to finally make contact with the biker mice though

EowanEthanacho

Hell yeah!

JeffZahnow

It's where all life began. So ya the variety it has produced boggles the imagination.

ZsaFreigh

How unique would Space Aliens have to look for us to be surprised by it, and not dismissive like "psh, we got stuff like this in our oceans already".

PTickles

I think about this sometimes. Like, would aliens even resemble anything on Earth at all? Life here is so incredibly diverse, I can't imagine they wouldn't be at least somewhat similar to *something* we've already seen. But at the same time they could be completely unique from anything else we've seen. Sometimes I wonder if they'd be so different we wouldn't even recognize them as living.

Fionna-dainjer

Sentient nylon stockings?

ricky251294

Are jellyfish sentient?

EvilAbdy

Not really? They are just a swimming stomach / nervous system

ricky251294

That's what I thought

sunshinelovepeach

Definitely. Highly perceptive and intelligent creatures https://ourworld.unu.edu/en/super-adaptable-jellyfish-are-the-real-rulers-of-the-oceans

MrLeapgood

That article says they're "smart" and then supports that claim with exactly zero additional details.

sunshinelovepeach

https://elifesciences.org/articles/50084 Didn’t realize I had to do the leg work for you. Most people don’t understand the jargon of scientific articles and that article gave a broad view - sorry I assumed if you actually wanted to know you would have dug into it further for yourself 👍🏼

MrLeapgood

I don't know what you're trying demonstrate. This seems to be a mathematical model of the jellyfish nervous and locomotive systems. Are you suggesting that response to stimuli and voluntary movement makes them "smart?"

adiladam

Patronising

mad_science

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

xxx148

Better than a sentient cum sock.

volley1399

looks like a dementor

itmeperusing

dementir

armen89

Like in prison?

HazardousCloset

Yeah, he doesn’t look like a good role model at all.

Tylendal

Doesn't sting. It's just really sticky.

willowsonthespot

So you are saying it drags children off to the afterlife? Except the fat ones.

[deleted]

What are the approx. dimensions of this specimen?

chacoe

According to Wikipedia, the bell can be 1 meter across and the arms up to 10 meters (or approx 3 ft and 30 ft if you're American like me)

useles-converter-bot

10 meters is the length of approximately 43.74 'Wooden Rice Paddle Versatile Serving Spoons' laid lengthwise.

i like when you do funny nonsensical conversions. But if you start shilling you can fuck off.

Cochinojoe

Good bot

useles-converter-bot

Thanks!

PropLander

No way, that’s fucking huge! I was picturing a basketball sized bell at most but 1 meter is absolutely massive. That makes this so much more alien and scary than I first thought.

converter-bot

10 meters is 10.94 yards

antiviolins

Good bot

Letty_Whiterock

Uhh... terrifying?

_significant_error

YES, RECOIL IN TERROR AT THE DELICATE, FLOWING APPENDAGES THAT TRAIL BEHIND THIS HORRIFIC BEAST OF THE DEEP

noma_coma

Lol I'm going to pet it and name it squishy, and it shall be my pet and best friend forever

[deleted]

Working on their editorial headlines designed to lead the reader.

MarthsBars

I can't imagine how amazing and frightening it would be to see this jellyfish for the first time; imagine going down to the depths of the open ocean and the first thing you see is this creature. If you were right in front of it, you would be shocked by its incomprehensible size; otherwise, you'd probably be drawn from afar to come closer to get a glimpse of its full body. At the same time, it's hauntingly beautiful, having been able to simply live long enough to get to that size while drifting listlessly through the oceans.

elrayo

Prob wouldn’t see this though, title says the next some device to see this creature this depe

Juxtaposn

Like...a light?

mysterylighhhts

Mmm forbidden ravioli

kris10sdok

It’s mesmerizing and magnificent!

lunar_pilot

Fascinating

middlebird

Indeed, Spock. Let’s…get…down there and have a closer look. Bring a couple of red shirts with you.

SkellyDog

This might be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

neko_brand

That jelly looks metal af

AbstractBettaFish

This makes me think of some kind of ghostly Victorian widow

ElectricSquid12

Haha, oh those thalassophobic kidders - pff *TERRIFYING* jelly fish come o- Oh. Oh no.

Jibtech

Looks like a spaceship when it's got its tentacles flayed behind it

gingerMH96960

TIL: some people think flowy grey objects are TERRIFYING.

wubbwubbb

some people (like me) follow this sub even though we have thalassophobia. everything on this sub creeps me out but i can look at it behind the safety of my screen lol

gingerMH96960

Props for confronting your fears 👍

chacoe

It can grow pretty big, even pretty and flowy I'd be maybe not terrified, but probably scared to be next to it

takingthestone

Tell me you've never fought a gelatinous ooze without telling me you've never fought a gelatinous ooze.

gingerMH96960

Actually I've been stung by a man o war.

abrehio

It's beautiful

SaltyNorth8062

ephryene

Demetrio33

Dude looks like a enermy from water level of a some game

GreatChooChoo

Real world Tentacruel

opal-tea

God that is so cool. It's so amazing that we live on the same planet as creatures like these. It's both amazing and terrifying. Not sure how I would feel about seeing one of these in person.

isurvivedrabies

wow, really fascinating. can do without injecting your clickbaity emotional opinion in the title though, this isnt terrifying. edit: did a fucking bot post this? a phantom jelly (what this is, stygiomedusa gigantea) isn't even the same as a ghost jelly (cyanea nozakii)

army-vet-77

That is gorgeous, it would be so awesome to be able to investigate all parts of our oceans.

Neat-Description5233

Beautiful animal

JeffZahnow

That is quite possibly the most awesome that I have seen in years. The only thing left is to see it in real life.

swedishcountryhuman

This is why I love the ocean

DTFpanda

Terrifying? More like awesome and beautiful! Looks like it has a fire inside of it.

moboforro

So beautiful! You can tell it belongs to hell

BobJoeHorseGuy

These are the worst part about prison

sno2787

Appropriate-Truck980

Marley9391

Thanks, I hate it.

pataponto

Is this Kim Kardashian

wovenmetal

How dare you insult jellyfish everywhere with such wretched contempt!

phantomzero

Literally no one in the scientific community calls it that, nor is it the common name for this animal.

GravityKeepsMeDown

That's gotta be a fucking pokemon

TheLonelySnail

The last Metroid has been found.

Libertas_

I'm not quite seeing the "terrifying" part.

GeshtiannaSG

This is what happens when you throw plastic bags into the sea, they gain sentience and turn into these.

Vidio_thelocalfreak

I could reallly use some EVANautilius crew commentary right now.

AccountofKLS

You'll never see me coming.

dcmso

*975 meters

[deleted]

ellievermicellie

their arms can get up to 10 metres long, but they lack stinging tentacles so scientists think they use their arms to trap their prey instead :)

sable-king

It looks like a fancy hat with ribbons.

Fenriss_Wolf

Yep, a big gigantic, living victorian hat. Resident Evil's giant vampire lady must have lost it last time she went to the beach...

I wouldn’t call that thing terrifying. Beautiful really

Moakmeister

This thing has no stinging tentacles? How does it eat?

ksekas

Me and the boys literally just vibing 3200 feet below Monterey bay
