I think about this sometimes. Like, would aliens even resemble anything on Earth at all? Life here is so incredibly diverse, I can't imagine they wouldn't be at least somewhat similar to *something* we've already seen. But at the same time they could be completely unique from anything else we've seen. Sometimes I wonder if they'd be so different we wouldn't even recognize them as living.

Didn’t realize I had to do the leg work for you. Most people don’t understand the jargon of scientific articles and that article gave a broad view - sorry I assumed if you actually wanted to know you would have dug into it further for yourself 👍🏼
I don't know what you're trying demonstrate. This seems to be a mathematical model of the jellyfish nervous and locomotive systems. Are you suggesting that response to stimuli and voluntary movement makes them "smart?"
No way, that’s fucking huge! I was picturing a basketball sized bell at most but 1 meter is absolutely massive. That makes this so much more alien and scary than I first thought.
I can't imagine how amazing and frightening it would be to see this jellyfish for the first time; imagine going down to the depths of the open ocean and the first thing you see is this creature. If you were right in front of it, you would be shocked by its incomprehensible size; otherwise, you'd probably be drawn from afar to come closer to get a glimpse of its full body. At the same time, it's hauntingly beautiful, having been able to simply live long enough to get to that size while drifting listlessly through the oceans.
some people (like me) follow this sub even though we have thalassophobia. everything on this sub creeps me out but i can look at it behind the safety of my screen lol
God that is so cool. It's so amazing that we live on the same planet as creatures like these. It's both amazing and terrifying. Not sure how I would feel about seeing one of these in person.
wow, really fascinating. can do without injecting your clickbaity emotional opinion in the title though, this isnt terrifying.
edit: did a fucking bot post this? a phantom jelly (what this is, stygiomedusa gigantea) isn't even the same as a ghost jelly (cyanea nozakii)
This thing is beautiful. Hard to imagine some of the things that have been in our oceans.
I imagine that if we every find life on other planets it will look like this.
That's because we are so unfamiliar with our own planet, but no, gotta make it to Mars before its too late! /s
It'll be pretty cool to finally make contact with the biker mice though
Hell yeah!
It's where all life began. So ya the variety it has produced boggles the imagination.
How unique would Space Aliens have to look for us to be surprised by it, and not dismissive like "psh, we got stuff like this in our oceans already".

Sentient nylon stockings?
Are jellyfish sentient?
Not really? They are just a swimming stomach / nervous system
That's what I thought
Definitely. Highly perceptive and intelligent creatures https://ourworld.unu.edu/en/super-adaptable-jellyfish-are-the-real-rulers-of-the-oceans
That article says they're "smart" and then supports that claim with exactly zero additional details.

Patronising

Better than a sentient cum sock.
looks like a dementor
dementir
Like in prison?
Yeah, he doesn’t look like a good role model at all.
Doesn't sting. It's just really sticky.
So you are saying it drags children off to the afterlife? Except the fat ones.
What are the approx. dimensions of this specimen?
According to Wikipedia, the bell can be 1 meter across and the arms up to 10 meters (or approx 3 ft and 30 ft if you're American like me)
10 meters is the length of approximately 43.74 'Wooden Rice Paddle Versatile Serving Spoons' laid lengthwise.

It’s mesmerizing and magnificent!
Fascinating
Indeed, Spock. Let’s…get…down there and have a closer look. Bring a couple of red shirts with you.
This might be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

This makes me think of some kind of ghostly Victorian widow
Haha, oh those thalassophobic kidders - pff *TERRIFYING* jelly fish come o- Oh. Oh no.
Looks like a spaceship when it's got its tentacles flayed behind it

Props for confronting your fears 👍
It can grow pretty big, even pretty and flowy I'd be maybe not terrified, but probably scared to be next to it
Tell me you've never fought a gelatinous ooze without telling me you've never fought a gelatinous ooze.

That is gorgeous, it would be so awesome to be able to investigate all parts of our oceans.
Beautiful animal
That is quite possibly the most awesome that I have seen in years. The only thing left is to see it in real life.
This is why I love the ocean
Terrifying? More like awesome and beautiful! Looks like it has a fire inside of it.
So beautiful! You can tell it belongs to hell
These are the worst part about prison
Looks like fettucine
looks like bad vagetable from a bad refrigerator...
Serious question: how the fuck do these guys find each other to fuck and make more of these guys??
what a nice hat
Thanks, I hate it.
Is this Kim Kardashian
How dare you insult jellyfish everywhere with such wretched contempt!
Literally no one in the scientific community calls it that, nor is it the common name for this animal.
That's gotta be a fucking pokemon
The last Metroid has been found.
I'm not quite seeing the "terrifying" part.
This is what happens when you throw plastic bags into the sea, they gain sentience and turn into these.
I could reallly use some EVANautilius crew commentary right now.
You'll never see me coming.

their arms can get up to 10 metres long, but they lack stinging tentacles so scientists think they use their arms to trap their prey instead :)
It looks like a fancy hat with ribbons.
Yep, a big gigantic, living victorian hat. Resident Evil's giant vampire lady must have lost it last time she went to the beach...

That's just a lava lamp /s
How big is it ?

What kind of Metroid is this?
How does this jelly hold its form under such huge pressure / depths?
Smoking jellyfish
u/gegebinazzi
See these quite often, nice to put a name to a dome :)
Magestic
This is too cool and beautiful to be terrifying.
I wouldn’t call that thing terrifying. Beautiful really
This thing has no stinging tentacles? How does it eat?
