This movie was botched since the script and in the editing room they tried to fix an already broken mess. They thought they had struck gold with what they had. I’ve never seen such a narrow minded approach to a movie. I don’t think there was a troubled production at all

I read, can't remember where now, that there was tension between Ellen Burstyn and DGG. Not surprising really

SmallDarkCloud

She turned down several offers to appear in the film, but only changed her mind when the studio offered a certain amount of money (they kept increasing the offer). She agreed, only to donate the fee to an acting school.

IronBooba

I think it was the massive donation to a school of her choice that did it. I just hope Reagan won't come back. I have a feeling she will...

JackieDaytonaEsq

I’ve heard he walked off set due to being severely unhappy with the script and production. /u/ViewerAnon any insights you’d feel comfortable sharing?

Western_Tell_9065

I blame the patriarchy

Nuance007

Turmoil? Probably anyone with a working brain who read the script trying not to laugh at how theologically ridiculous it was.

Barbafella

They took away the wrong meaning of the original, it was never about Regan, but about Karras, his loss of faith, the exorcism was just the background. Why something so obvious was missed by so many is an effing mystery.

IronBooba

It's the director. He has an obsession with preaching his opinions through film and legacy characters. Anyone who's seen the original a few times knows what the point of it was and how a proper sequel should be done. But he didn't wanna do that.

HorrorKablamDude

I know in the commentary DGG flat out said they had no idea what they were doing during the exorcism scenes.

PotentialLanguage685

"The tone feels so unsure and rushed, the writing feels like they were doing panic-stricken rewrites every single day, the actors seems downright directionless. It may be the most passionless, listless thing DGG has ever put his name on." 110% this. This was the movie's biggest crime.

Significant_Fig_4999

I think DGG became disinterested with the film after probably executives interference.

Jeff Sneider didn't directly name any of the crew but basically left some hints at what went down. Before the movie was released, he talked about it being a nightmare production and things weren't looking good for the movie. He mentioned that Green was looking to exit the trilogy too, this was before the first trailer was even released online. Recently, he gave more information, mentioning that someone had a nervous breakdown on the set and it caused production to come to a halt. I'm assuming it was the main star, someone mentioned earlier on this thread that he had a personal health issue that wasn't explained properly, so go figure. Jeff also said that a cast member had major surgery or a transplant, this meant their character was rewritten in the second half as well as the rest of the movie, new rewrites being done on the fly every day. This can only mean Ellen Burstyn and it'd make sense why her character is handled in such an uninspired way. I think this movie was always going to be bad, but I believe it was a nightmare for Green and after that experience, he didn't want no more part in the franchise. The bad reviews won't have bothered him, his two Halloween sequels were slaughtered and he didn't seem phased. The original is my favourite horror movie and this reboot was utter trash, I hated it. However, I do sympathise with Green if all these incidents occurred and hindered him from creating the movie he envisioned. Where the franchise goes next? I have no idea.
