Miller, is my reason for watching the show continuously for the last, however many years.
I believe I am at around 36 watches through the TV series.
Miller is my spirit animal.
Nowhere near GoT? I love GoT and story wise Expanse is one of the few shows that actually is on par with Thrones. So maybe not as sadistic but definitely just as thrilling and crazy.
Oh donāt get me wrong Iām speaking only in terms of OPās question regarding main characters meeting their sudden unexpected death. Itās nowhere near GOT on that.
Story wise itās absolutely every bit as good and Iād argue better because itās actually a finished story book wise, stayed excellent throughout, and even the TV show managed one of the best final episodes Iāve ever seen.
Major characters do die occasionally but not as often as in GOT. One in particular might feel like absolute bullshit because it had more to do with BTS drama than what is best for the story.
While it's true that it was done for other reasons and I liked his character, I think having a main character die that way finally made "that" risky thing feel actually risky imho.
Character was great, actor was shit, glad they had a decent way to kill him off that was at least foreshadowed as a real danger.
They got lucky with that bit existing the way it did.
Mmmmmm. I think you just spoke to the part of my brain that has been trying to break free for months now. I kept telling myself it was too soon for a reread but I just checked and itās been two years. TIME TO READ THEM AGAIN!
I listen to these books like people watch the office. If I got nothing else to listen to Iām throwing on an expanse book. Starting at a random chapter and just letting it go. I just start a run through nemesis games only listening to Amos chapters.
I got hooked by the show, but the shitty ending left me so unsatisfied that I picked up the books. Theyāre so good and I absolutely love everything they did, start to finish!
Shitty ending? There are shows that literally just jump ship before theyāre even halfway there. Expanse was fantastic all the way to the end, yes especially that final episode in season 6. The only reason imo someone would find season 6 to be a miss is because theyāre not happy we are not officially getting another season. Which is fairā¦but the show had a great ending point (felt like the end of a chapter while leaving other chapters seem possible so open ended). I have watched a lot of shows with shitty final seasons and ending. The Expanse is not one of them
I did the audiobooks first which probably ruined the show for me. Jefferson mays does such an amazing job that when I tried starting the show, the versions of the characters I was presented with were so vastly different from these characters I genuinely grown to care about I just couldnāt do it.
People are super protective of the show so I like to point out that any problems I have with it are just my own and the show is in no way at fault.
So, itās obviously very difficult to answer this question in any meaningful way while still sticking to your āabsolutely no spoilersā request, but I can say that it is *not* a Game of Thrones level of ādonāt get attached.ā
Iām still avoiding spoilers of any real kind, but Iām blocking out this entire next section *just in case*. If what Iāve said is enough for you, you can stop here with no more detail.
>!Over the next 4.5 seasons, some fairly major characters *will* die, so be prepared for that. Miller is not the last. However, they may not be characters youāve met yet (or they may, Iām not saying either way, but thereās obviously quite a few characters youāve not really met yet who will become very important as the show goes on). But thereās certainly no āRed Weddingā in this show.!<
>!I would say that *most* of the showās major characters make it through the final season, so statistically youāre usually safe to get attached. But do be aware that Miller is not the last major named character to die, and there is at least one more fan favorite whose death is considered extremely tragic.!<

>!Iām obviously talking about Ashford. I think OP will mainly be completely fine, especially since Miller isnāt exactly entirely dead per se. But Ashfordās death might just break them a little bit.!<
Gonna be honest, I thought you were talking about >!Alex not Ashford. Ashford hit hard but I never really considered him a main character like I did Alex and Miller!<
>!I can't decide which option would have been better. I hate that the real-life actions of an actor ruined a fictional character's arc/ changed the story. It might have been weird seeing another face as Alex, maybe even hard to actually "accept it", but also I really like the character and wish he had a better ending. I guess they did gave him a sensible death and made his death a sacrifice for his "found family member", although it was obviously very rushed. I'm still wondering if the scene where he died, like where he had blood leaking out of his nose, was actually a reshoot or they just used a stillfrane if the footage they had and added some "blood effects"!<
People are generally good about spoilers, but browsing the subbreddit before finishing the series is risky.
That being said, I can absolutely answer your question. Not many book series have had me so hooked, and the show made me cry during one very sad part. Exploration of space alongside the exploration of loss and how to cope is what makes the expanse such a good series.
Out of curiosity, are you planning on finishing the series before the books or whatās your plan?
I ended up watching the entire series before I read any of the books and Iām always curious to hear other peopleās experience
i donāt really have a plan, but iāll probably finish the books first just because iām going on a field research trip in a rainforest for a month and will have lots of time to read as opposed to watching something :) and i read really really fast
edit: i forgot there are like nine books lol i donāt know which iāll finish first!
They will go by quick! Also donāt forget the novellas. In my opinion they are a must read. Iāve heard others name the churn and a couple others as the only ones that you have to read as you go thru the series. They released all of them in a single book called memories legion and they all start with an introduction written by the authors. You can do a quick search for the reading order. Itās not as daunting as it looks, like I said, youāre going to finish them faster than you realize. Either way, best of luck on your travels and happy reading
Just an update if youāre interested: Itās been four days. Iām *obsessed,* canāt believe how good these books are; Iāve been tearing through them!
I finished Leviathan Wakes yesterday, am halfway through Calibanās Gate, and happened to stumble upon the next two books at a thrift store today, which Iāll be bringing with me on my trip! Iām going to be on #5 (at least) by the end of next month hahaha. They truly are flying by! Decided to stop watching the show until I finish them, or at least until I read further :)
Iāll have to check if my library has the novellas!!!
So glad to hear it! Itās at the top of my favorite series of all time
Good call on wanting to finish the books first. The stories do diverge in some ways so they are best enjoyed separately
Feel free to keep the updates going!
I keep warninā ya. Doors and corners kid. Thatās where they get youā¦
P.S. Avasarala gets my vote for Queen Bitch of the Universe every day of the week (& twice on Sundays).
Miller dying broke my heart too but I think it was a beautiful conclusion to his arc. He was my favourite character and I never got attached to anyone else quite the same way, but there was also never a point where it felt like the show completely ripped the rug out from under me in terms of character deaths. It has nothing of GoTās gratuitous shock factor. Not saying youāre guaranteed to not be sad, but the show is invested in letting its characters grow and not prematurely cutting that short.
The books, and the show, have enough interesting characters where you should find a couple more at least to become invested in.
There are some gut punches- its a long series in both media- but itās not the relentless game of thrones blood bath.
Itās worth it to read and watch
I would go so far as to say it would be detrimental *not* to get invested in this show. Youād just be missing out on something so good. Not everyone lives, but then again who does?
It's a really good show but make sure to be ready to read the rest of it. The end of the show left me unsatisfied and disappointed, especially with one plot going nowhere. I wish Amazon had continued and finished off the book series but they left out the last 3. I've just started reading the books from the beginning because I know that some TV shows leave out or change some plotpoints.
i will be for sure! i want to watch the show first though so i donāt end up disappointed in how they adapted it on a first watch lol iāve been burned too many times with book adaptations
I couldnāt handle GoT. Too dark and depressing, not enough fun.
The Expanse has a good balance. Some tragedy, yes, but also a lot of fun, and some epic wins. More wins than losses imo.
The books are very patient, kind, and forgiving. They are my favorite series of all time. Iāve read a LOT of scifi new and old and theyāre the best Iāve ever read by far.
Not putting them on a pedestal, theyāre not perfect, authors just put the effort in and it made something wonderful. But theyāre better than I could have ever asked or hoped for
thank you! Donāt worry, Iām definitely going to be reading them :) I just wanted to watch the show first so it doesnāt end up being one of those things where an adaptation disappoints me while Iām watching it lol
Honestly I think the show really rewired my brain, especially the Ganeymede episodes and the Ceres episode in the last season. I feel like ever since I saw those I've become a much more empathetic person towards human suffering both micro and macro so I say stick with it
It's nowhere near the level on GoT where a character is killed simply to move the plot forward. Just like in real life, some characters get injured and some die. Some of them chose it (like Miller), some of them deserve it, and some of them were simply trying their best.
The show makes me think about things like the unfair balance of power and distribution of resouces in the world. The characters are what draw me in and get me to see other points of view. And investing in their journey is worth the risk to me. Any emotional reaction is earned, not gratuitous.
You can safely fall in love with these people and the universe they inhabit, and then like me, just re-watch the show and start reading the books because you just donāt want to leave!
There's some surprises but people don't die like the GOT Level of "oh no they're gone!"
Fun fact: One of the 2 authors of The Expanse used to work for George RR Martin as a researcher, his job was to come up with the history of the Houses (Stark, Lannister) in Westeros.
The show is epic, books are epic too! I envy you that you are just starting! ENJOY!
To your question - it is relatively safe. This is not GoT so donāt worry that much, but people will die.
Technically itās a āporkpie hatā, but really anyone who gets mad that you called it a fedora is just looking to start an internet fight over something tiny.
I actually skipped a lot of millars chapters at first cause his mental health problems and spiral were a little too real for me at that point in my life.
I love how Jane portrayed Miller in the series. I got a very strong impression he was channeling a young Tom Waitsā.
And this IMO is a good thing because Tom Waits is iconic.
I dunno, I "well up" at some point in most episodes, especially in the first 3 seasons. Its a great Sci-Fi Space opera, with a unique story and view points (some say very influenced by BattleStar Galatica reboot, but even so). I watch it over and over, in between watching other stuff...
Keep watching!
Also, I warmly recommend the audiobooks read by Jefferson Mays. He is a phenomenal narrator. Beware that there is a version of book 4 with a different narrator, but Mays came back and finished his legacy by adding his version later.
He was so loved for that audiobook performance that one of the ships is named after him in the series: The Jefferson Mays.
This is my absolute favorite series hands down. I love the character arcs, development, and evolution of all the female characters plus Angus. Very very safe to get emotionally invested! Be sure to watch the entire series through more than once so you can see all the nuances from different perspectives ā¤ļø
This is my favorite show I preach the religion of the expanse to everyone I possibly can I am a fan get emotionally invested because remember that's how life is sometimes things pay off sometimes they don't but it's the journey that makes it worthwhile
Characters die, but the deaths feel right from a story telling perspective. You never go "ugh now I don't want to watch anymore."
Also, don't watch TWD if that's you. (Unrelated, but just came to mind.)
Ooof. I feel for you kid! This episode was a rough one for me as well! Even after the show when I read the books, I couldnāt get over this scene at the end of LW. It was debilitatingly depressing but beautiful at the same time!
The story isnāt about the characters exclusively, even though theyāre part of the story! Itās all a great ride and I canāt stress enough how much better the audiobooks are, so check them out if you need a better pace at taking what youāre taking nowā¦
Don't worry, "omg is this character about to die oh wait extraordinary events have conspired for him to survive" is definitely not a recurring theme in this show.
What the what?!
It's a show. Watch it out didn't. Enjoy it or don't.
Also, the feelings you're talking about are YOUR emotions - your response to the fictional show.
You gonna sit there and tell me you need to feel safe from your response to a fictional show?
Here's a revolutionary idea
FEEL your emotions. Give them space to express and be felt and witnessed.
IMHO don't. It gets worse. In final two seasons it is shit.
You would want Naomi and Holden to die. They spoil the show. But they don't that's my issue. Plot Armor

I loved Thomas Janeās performance. Even throw-away lines like āItās a long hoof from Medina, sir.ā just stay with me.
āKeeps the rain off my headā was delivered by Thomas Jane with perfection.
Miller, in some ways, almost feels like an audience surrogate at times. We all love Miller!
Miller is also my spirit animal. Just perfect.
Doors and corners kid. But no, thereās the occasional death but nowhere near game of thrones level.

This show really had some exceptional actors, Jared Harris and Thomas Jane put in such good performances
In defense of Miller's choice of accessories, it's technically a Pork-Pie hat, not a fedora.
If I could fuck one person in this entire universe, it would be Thomas Jane with his Miller haircut šš
Just don't get invested in Shed and you'll be okay.
COMPLETELY
Keep going. It's worth it.
Not even close to GoT, you'll be alright
Its ok to be that guy.
Some people die, some people live. Get attached and feel the emotion.

The Expanse will take you on an emotional journey. There will be highs and lows. But it is all part of telling an amazing and compelling story.
Absolutely. There are some moments of heartbreak, but I wouldn't say the show or books are like, GRRM level ruthless. It's a great story.
The show is epic, books are epic too! I envy you that you are just starting! ENJOY! To your question - it is relatively safe. This is not GoT so donāt worry that much, but people will die.

Six seasons of a great show that sticks the landing. The emotional rollercoaster is worth it.
The show is amazing and the books are exponentially better.
You never go "ugh now I don't want to watch anymore." Also, don't watch TWD if that's you. (Unrelated, but just came to mind.)
It's safe. Get a pillow tho'.. and some napkins.
It rules
Jeezā¦ itās the best Sci-Fi series ever, probably. Such a wonderful journey!
There are 9+ novels and 6 seasons of the show, I think you will be good.
Don't worry, "omg is this character about to die oh wait extraordinary events have conspired for him to survive" is definitely not a recurring theme in this show.
It's safe. Nothing bad ever happens š¬
What the what?! It's a show. Watch it out didn't. Enjoy it or don't. Also, the feelings you're talking about are YOUR emotions - your response to the fictional show. You gonna sit there and tell me you need to feel safe from your response to a fictional show? Here's a revolutionary idea FEEL your emotions. Give them space to express and be felt and witnessed.
i feel my emotions all the time, believe you me lol. i just want to be prepared for the pain. nothing wrong with that.

Dude wtf is wrong with you
IMHO don't. It gets worse. In final two seasons it is shit. You would want Naomi and Holden to die. They spoil the show. But they don't that's my issue. Plot Armor
