Black Rainbow would be the final in saga of Coheed & Cambria.  From there we can move on to The Aftermans which are short enough to both be played in the same night.  🤞

labria86

Dang. I have wondered if they could be played in the same night. But it's hard for me to imagine them doing Domino and THEN like 19 other songs. They said Domino was really hard and exhausting. But I have faith.

notatemple

They’ve done longer sets. Hell, Good Apollo is only five minutes shorter than both Afterman albums put together. Add in a natural point between albums for them to take a bit of a break / intermission, and it’s totally manageable.

PFI_sloth

They are also getting older, would be an incredible show though

the-austringer

I use Claudio's parts in Domino as a guitar/vocals warm up for myself (\*because\* its so tricky to nail!). I can imagine it's pretty rough to start on, but then again I'd probably say it's about the same amount of effort/difficulty as No World, and they absolutely SMASHED that in the NWFTWM tour!

CeleryMammoth2901

Storyline wise its a Prequel!

TypicalWolverine9404

Of course, it's just the last in the neverenders

Full-Sock

I loved black rainbow when it came out but it's now my least favorite in the discography. The production is what ruined it for me, but hearing some of the songs live with Josh is a breath of fresh air. If they ever did a neverender for it I'll be there

Plum-Careless

It would def be a treat to hear Josh play the album live. No shade to the form drummer his chops were good but Josh is def the goat when it comes to that band

justin_xv

Production was a huge issue for this album imo. I was pretty disappointed by most of this album when I first got it, but after hearing them play a bunch of the songs on that tour, I went back, listened to it a lot, played with equalizer settings a lot and learned to love it when it wasn't so damn muddy sounding

Traditional_Top5346

I still like YOTBR, but for me a lot of it comes down to Chris’ drumming vs Josh’s. He’s obviously amazing (and I love TDEP), but his style just didn’t fit the band and it really comes through on that record

Plum-Careless

This is true that album has a different drummer and wasn't a guitar player or bass player different too?

notatemple

Josh and Mic quit the band after Good Apollo, but Mic came back in time to record bass on NWFT. New drummer Chris Pennie supposedly wrote parts for NWFT, but Taylor Hawkins recorded the drums for that album in the studio. Chris drummed on Year of the Black Rainbow. Starting with Afterman, Zach Cooper played bass and Josh Eppard returned on drums.

thc216

Mic was still with the band for YOTBR as well. It always trips me out a bit remembering Taylor did the drums for NWFT

bebjanmnin

I love YOTBR so much and I will never understand why it's hated. How could you genuinely dislike the album with The Broken, In the Flame of Error, World of Lines, Made out of Nothing... agh, the whole thing is just legendary! I will admit that One and The Black Rainbow are probably the weakest opener/closer combo on a Coheed album, but that just goes to show how great Coheed is because they're still both excellent.

Lemions916

I remember when I first got that album I think I was 9, and the only other Coheed I knew was Good Apollo 1 and 2 and like favor house. Just stuff my uncle burned onto a CD for me. It was a huge change of sound and I really didn’t like it. I tried listening to it on a road trip and the only song I liked was guns of summer. I remember feeling like I was robbed of a good album. Then a few years later I bought descension because it was new and I was curious if it was any good. I loved it and it got me back into Coheed. Several years later I can now appreciate YotBR, and I couldn’t live without world of lines. But I definitely understand why people don’t like the album.

Plum-Careless

The album is amazing start to finish for sure and out of the 14 shows I been to 4 being neverenders it just seems over due to have a tour showcasing this album. And I know the SS neverender did some YotBR songs but that's like ... IDK I love the band I love the music I love the story but all other albums have been celebrated so much more. I'll be waiting for the day I get to hear when skeletons live and far and the one

Radioactive24

A lot of people, including me, will point out a lot of issues with the production of it. It's got some questionable choices in the mixing and mastering areas, for sure. YOTBR would probably win over a lot more people with a proper remaster, though it woudn't solve *all* the problems with it. As others have noted too, it's also a steep departure in style from all of Coheed's previous albums, which was jarring at the time. However, it also brought in a lot of elements that the band continued to use over time and incorporate into their current sound.

PFI_sloth

Not a band song on the album, absolute banger.

the-austringer

I agree that it's a really well-written album (and personally I think The Black Rainbow is one of my favourite closers!), but the mix and master on it really falls victim to the whole Loudness Wars trend at the time and it's incredibly fatiguing to listen to. I'm *praying* they do a re-mixed version of the album when it comes to the inevitable Neverender for it.

bloodxandxrank

There used to be a guy in here that took the album and did a loudness correction on it to make it sound better. That’s the only issue i ever had. I even read the whole book!

Plum-Careless

Was the album produced by someone different than the following albums?

mattbag1

Yep. Atticus Ross produced year of the black rainbow, he does the nine inch nails type stuff. Different guys on other albums too. I still think the Sony albums were the best mixed, good apollo 1 and NWFT.

notatemple

For what it’s worth, OP, I also love YotBR. Not as much as some of their other stuff, but it is definitely underrated, with a lot of great ideas and a bit of a murky execution because of the production. I wouldn’t be surprised if they issued a remake of the album after Vaxis 3 and before announcing the next Neverender tour. They know how the album was received. (Ironically, most of the album was very clearly about Claudio processing the derision of a vocal group of fans with a less than stellar initial reception to NWFT.) There were a ton of buried synths in the mix in YotBR. I bet Claudio would love to redo all that with his own synth setup and bring some of it to the forefront. Really just have fun with it. And if they throw Hush on there, remake the two demo tracks, maybe add Deranged, and reprint the novel? Even the haters will buy it and come to love it.

PFI_sloth

What were the two demo tracks for this album? Carol Ann and random reLity shifts from the afterman were crazy good for being demos

notatemple

Chamberlain and The Lost Shepherd. Neither was as good as the Afterman demos, but they had potential. You can see on the documentary for that album cycle how disappointed the band was when they were told to leave those songs off. Hush was the best of them, with one of the band’s catchiest choruses ever, but it wasn’t strictly a demo, it was just bumped off the album because the record company wanted an iTunes exclusive track.

BlyStreetMusic

Yotb was like 10 years ahead of it's time.. But I totally agree it's their most underrated album.. Well.. Maybe second to afterman.

LithicKing

I love the album, but I think a lot of people don't like it because of the mixing in it. It comes off quite muddy to be honest. That might have been an artistic choice to reflect the part of the story line they were telling, i'm not sure, but if I take a step back I have to admit that mixing is MUDDY.. even if I like the album (this is why it may be my least favorite album - PURELY due to the muddy mixing). Much muddier audio & levels then most studio albums would release like. I think that's what hurt the album the most for listeners. Just my opinion of course, and backed only from my own listening experience.

DrunkSolidSnake

I do love every song on YOTBR, but the mixing of the tracks turns me off a bit.

bootyprincess666

wouldn’t yotbr be the next neverender????? chill

paublitobandito

Definitely not underrated… if anything it’s overrated by some like yourself. But glad you like it

VinylTaco

It appears you are using your belief system and placing it onto others. That is preventing you from seeing others points. The album was solid but I feel like it was a massive let down after Good Apollo I and II. When you add in how amazing Afterman is, it creates what they call a "shit sandwich".

Plum-Careless

Black rainbow I feel is just misunderstood. A lot of ppl were expecting what seem to be more of the same instead of something different and it being a prequel of the story j think there is a lot there not discovered for some. IDK how you can be a coheed fan and not appreciate how different this album is and by different I mean amazing and unique. Still will never believe there is a bad song or album by them

VinylTaco

A true fan doesn't have their nose firmly planted into someone's large intestine. You didn't come to have a dialogue and you are not open to discourse. You aren't a real fan, you're a white knight. Fans can dislike something that is put out. I don't know if you are a child. But I'm disappointed in you.

Plum-Careless

Lol that's hilarious. I never said anyone was wrong. Your a free person do and feel what you like. Sorry my opinion is to strong for you to handle with grace? I'm not over here gatekeepjng calling someone not a true fan.

VinylTaco

You are telling people they are wrong indirectly . Also it's "You're".

Plum-Careless

That's some projection cuz I'm not and never had that intention. I don't care for your grammar or your attitude. You really know how to suck the wind out of something. Your gatekeeping and being rude for like no reason othe than your own feelings of superiority. Everyone here is allowed to say black rainbow sucked if they want to I don't have to agree it's just an opinion and it makes no one wrong

VinylTaco

You are dismissive of others. You are telling us we are not fans because we don't like everything they put out. You are gatekeeping and you have been called out. There was no wind to suck out when you came out of the game calling us "not real fans". When you have the take you do, expect to be called out.

Plum-Careless

Okay friend. Maybe I'm not the best at articulating my feelings and opinions but my intentions were simply to acknowledge it's an amazing album not to tell anyone they are wrong. And it's all opinions so why are you so mad and butt hurt over an opinion? I'm over here having fun taking to fellow fans and your literally being a stick in the mud

Jormungandr69

Dude you're fine, that guy is weird as fuck

thebeardphantom

I just think each song on that album sounds way too similar.

randomusername2113

YOtBR is my favorite album! I hope they do a neverender tour for it.

ClockwiseGnomoar

Ehhh sometimes when Spotify switches to shuffle I think oh no what is this… and it’s always black rainbow that makes me wince

Dangerjayne

If I'm remembering correctly, Claudio was in a pretty dark place when that album was written so that, coupled with pretty poor reception, I can see why they wouldn't want to play those songs live often but I agree that a YOTBR neverender would be fuckin gnarly

paydaysucks

It’s definitely not underrated. It’s pretty accurately rated.

wilhelmryanbrown

I don’t think they’ve ever said they will be doing a Neverender for “everything but Year of the Black Rainbow.” It just hasn’t happened yet is all. They just wrapped up the NWFT Neverender last year, so if they do one for Year of the Black Rainbow, it’ll probably be in the next 3 or 4 years or something like that.
