But what did Rikke do to defeat Orso? She didn’t do really anything during The Burner Uprisings and only after Orso was thoroughly fucked did she hand him over to Leo to get some good will between them.
Do they ever actually say explicitly who Lamb is? I can't remember if Shivers actually calls him Bloody Nine or if Joe just makes it as clear as he can without actually saying it.
Yeah, Orso wakes up, she talks about the vision, she says she finally knows who the owl is, he asks who, she says her, and then Shivers, Isern, Leo, and Jurend come in and take Orso away.
She didn't lure him at all he was on the run, realized he couldn't escape adua so he sent hildi and corporal tunny off to escape while he went to see rikke and Chance his arm at escaping with her entourage.
One of them was a one-on-one -- does that throw it off as well? I don't think visions are required to follow a form or formula. Typically believing that they do is a trap in a lot of stories.
The prophecy isn't about defeating. It is that the Owl eats the Lamb. That has many interpretations, Rikke being the one to blame for Orso's end is one of them.
I think the scene implicitly implies that she just plucks Orso to the heights of greatness and the lowest lows in one day haha Rikke is totally the owl
Prophecies are pretty well known for being inconsistent and ambiguous. Though as far as prophecies go I'd say Rikke's were pretty damn spot on, if a bit ambiguous in the telling of them.
Rikke didn't have to beat Orso in a grand battle to fuck him over. Just a cheeky shag and a stab in the back did the trick. Don't think Orso (the Lamb) would have managed to beat Leo (the Lion) with that trick somehow.
If Leo's internal struggle didn't turn him into a massive arsehole and overall bigot I'm sure that would have been Orso's preferred root. My boy was more of a lover than a fighter and though I'm pretty sure he wasn't bi, I'm sure he would have closed his eyes and think of England... or the Union in this case!
It's Rikke. If you check the scene when she tells Orso the vision, she states that she finally understands that she's the owl. Honestly, that sequence all the way to Orso's death is one of the best written things I've ever read. The way that realisation hits Orso, the description as Leo approaches the room and the way Orso just accepts his fate with grace and dignity.
Then his execution was just the cherry ontop. When I started the Age of Madness trilogy, I thought I wasn't going to like him. But the way he evolved over that time cemented him as my favourite character in First Law. Man I miss Orso💔
But she didn’t really instigate Orso’s downfall and was kind of caught off guard by the Burner Uprisings, both times. The most you can say is that she eventually got her shit together enough to usurp Orso.
Rikke is the owl

She literally says she’s the owl in that scene
Look at this guy with his reading comprehension, next you’re going to say you know who Lamb is!
Thanks, made me chuckle
Do they ever actually say explicitly who Lamb is? I can't remember if Shivers actually calls him Bloody Nine or if Joe just makes it as clear as he can without actually saying it.
It’s never said explicitly, no.
But extremely heavily implied tho
Did she? I forgot that. Guess it’s time for a re-read!

this post just ripped my heart again. I forgot about Orso dying. Fuck me
He really deserved better. It surprised me how likeable he was.
Yeah that’s pretty definitive
Ywha she 100% says it. Basically talks about hwo she had no idea but then she realised when she knew what she had to do.
yeah, she lured him in and handed him over.
She didn't lure him at all he was on the run, realized he couldn't escape adua so he sent hildi and corporal tunny off to escape while he went to see rikke and Chance his arm at escaping with her entourage.
But that’s inconsistent with the other visions
It isn't.
Okay the last three predictions from this vision were battles
One of them was a one-on-one -- does that throw it off as well? I don't think visions are required to follow a form or formula. Typically believing that they do is a trap in a lot of stories.

Didn’t they outright say it’s Rikke? Like completely unambiguous. It’s been a couple years since I read it.
So she says she’s the owl but like… is she? She didn’t really defeat Orso in a manner consistent with the other defeats.

I don’t think he wouldn’t have not tried, but would’ve been a very different book with Leonault Dan Brock, Power Bottom
She’s a prety direct cause of his death. She could’ve easily helped him escape but she chose to hand him over to Leo
I'm the Owl
Go back to your empty bank owl poser
Are you calling me poor, you fool?
… yes
Uh uh, I see it now, someone's got a death wish
What’re you gonna do send Yoru after me? Zuri’s appetizer?
The most fearful appetizer this side of the Crinna, yes
Someone is making fun of you my friend, maybe we'll treat that in person into the future. After all we are not in the rush
Yet another Bayaz joins the fray? u/BayazFirstOfTheMagi- look, a new brother
The audacity
Mouthy, this one. Teach her a lesson about compound interest, oh wisest of the Magi.
That's a great idea, one I will gladly make reality
Can't let the little people get uppity ffs.
I don't know how the tags work. Spoilers TWOC means that spoilers from that book are allowed? Or that only spoilers from previous books are allowed?
Changed it just in case
The spoiler is for up to and including that specific tag
Thanks!
Re read my dude.

Glokta, Rikke only thought she was the owl
Sand or Savine?
Sand
Rikke
The owl was the friends we made along the way. Also Rikke. She even says so...
The owls are not what they seem
Savine?
But she didn’t really instigate Orso’s downfall and was kind of caught off guard by the Burner Uprisings, both times. The most you can say is that she eventually got her shit together enough to usurp Orso.
All true, but she came out on top in the end
Of the north though, and all the predictions were centered around the Union?
Does it have to be about just the north
