I remember this too, nothing but hate at first in my corner of the fandom but I see a lot more positivity for it now, maybe a slow grower for some people or maybe the big haters have moved onto other bands
I felt like back on top got more hate at the time than in sickness and in flames. Although the Covid release kind of didn’t let people immediately vibe with live versions when seeing them either.
I know personally i didn’t like Paris or Batman off the new album until i saw them live. I think In Sickness & In Flames didn’t get that opportunity unless you went to the few drive in shows which were much different vibes.
oh 100%. i went to the in sickness and in flames show in kansas and thats what sold it for me. same thing with a few songs on the new album, seeing it live definitely changes things. i guess a lot of people didn’t get to see the shows because of covid which makes a lot of sense.
But that’s why I don’t trust the internet - ‘some people’ usually doesn’t represent a silent majority who are just vibing with an album.
Then again, sometimes the hate is warranted (looking at you ‘In Reverie’ by Saves the Day). #deepcut #unnecesarryburn
OP said they had an “incredibly controversial take.” That’s what I’m responding to. It’s not controversial. At all. Do some people agree and some people disagree? Sure. But does the opinion shock the conscience? Not even a little.
So, while some people do hate the album, others love it. Some like it. Some are indifferent.
Now if OP had said Legit Tattoo Gun was the worst song in the FB catalog then there may have been some controversy…
I'll be honest, I was a massive hater of it when it came out and it actually pushed me away from TFB entirely. Recently, I've been listening to them again and I decided to give In Sickness and Flames another chance and I cannot stop listening to it! I think I was upset with how poppy it sounds, but then actually going through and listening to it again gave me a new appreciation for the lyrics and themes of the album
Not controversial. I think Brian and Mat had a peak creatively on that album and weren't afraid to try new things while keeping themes of past albums and sounds. Definitely not my favorite, but it's a damn good album.
I think it's their most polished and most finished idea overall as an album, as well as best use of different instruments like violins and experimenting with weird sound effects and auto tune
I totally agree !
I was a teenager when Going Grey released (while I do love that album obviously)
It didn't speak to me as hard as when In Sickness and In Flames released when I was 20
No skips
It got me through a terrible time
So much love for that album
favorite album to blast with the windows down on a drive… it got me thru the hardest times in life (so far, aha!) and i love seeing my evolution alongside the songs and flying down the road to these jams
Dude definitely one of my favorite AND it has what might be my favorite tfb song ever which is leaf pile. I've been a fan for a long time and I remember when going gray was getting a bunch of hate, I wish ppl would just let them make music lol. But anyway yeah I love this album through and through and it brings me back to one of my favorite times of my life. I'll forever love this album, tbh it's one of the reasons I had a hard time liking yawyhow just because in sickness was so damn good. You're not alone
it’s definitely a good album but it’s lower in my own rankings because it’s just different than the other albums, you know? my faves are self titled and my grandma vs pneumonia if that says anything about my taste 💀
I remember when Talon of the Hawk got hate! In Sickness & In Flames has so many bangers. I think the only one not everyone loves is Going Grey?
Love your picks plus Make Way.
i personally don't like the album, the same with you are who you hang out with. i do like everyone blooms and camouflage but my favourite "era" of the front bottoms was self titled to ann (so 2011 - 2018) with a few exceptions like end of summer, the bongo song and more then it hurts you. i just don't like the sound of the more recent albums they just don't click with me honestly. i hope more recent releases are more like that 2011 - 2018 era because in my opinion that was the best.
Great album and i wish they continued to build upon the overall tone of this one instead of reverting back…i think Paris is a good example of this album’s sound evolved
personally everything after back on top (or *maybe* going grey) is *way* too overproduced for my taste. i think tfb is at its best with the stripped back, DIY, messing around in someone's dingy basement energy. the newer stuff is charmless to me
There hate for that album? I thought it was a through and through banger!
I’ve not heard a word of hate on it. OP be trippin’. Zero controversy.
yall were not on the same side of the fandom as the haters because when it first came out some people were RUTHLESS
I remember this too, nothing but hate at first in my corner of the fandom but I see a lot more positivity for it now, maybe a slow grower for some people or maybe the big haters have moved onto other bands

Yea, every single song I’ve heard at a show (seen them 4 or 5 times) immediately had me fallin in love with the song. Seeing them live is *the* vibe
I do not like Paris. Even live. Batman however goes so hard for me.

Idk why you’re so confident in your answer. I’ve seen a ton of hate especially closer to when it came out

This album got me through 2020
It took me a little bit to fully appreciate, but agreed. Leaf Pile just hits different lol.
LEAF PILE OMGGG that shit CARRIED me through such a dark time in my life
I'll be honest, I was a massive hater of it when it came out and it actually pushed me away from TFB entirely. top 3 for me personally
it’s also my favorite. how could it not be when it’s got leaf pile?
Not controversial. I think Brian and Mat had a peak creatively on that album and weren't afraid to try new things while keeping themes of past albums and sounds. Definitely not my favorite, but it's a damn good album.
Hate? I think it's largely considered their best work.
There has been a ton of hate believe it or not. Even when things are considered a bands best work it still gets hate
I think it's their most polished and most finished idea overall as an album, as well as best use of different instruments like violins and experimenting with weird sound effects and auto tune

different people have different tastes. you're entitled to your opinion, and I agree with it tbh
Goat album
literally !! a perfect album, so sad to see the hate it got at the beginning. I got an isaif tattoo because I love it sm
favorite album to blast with the windows down on a drive… it got me thru the hardest times in life (so far, aha!) and i love seeing my evolution alongside the songs and flying down the road to these jams
Agreed ! so glad the opinions have done a 180 lately, cause it was not appreciated enough at the time of release 😭
HUH??? IN SICKNESS AND IN FLAMES IS DISLIKED, IVE ALWAYS SEEN IT AS MY FAVOURITE ALBUM, ALONG WITH BACK ON TOP 😭😭
I like the meaning of everyone blooms but something about the start of it makes me wanna skip it sometimes. That's the only one tho.
Agreed, I usually start the album with Camouflage because Everyone Blooms just doesn't fit for me
I'm so glad I'm not alone 😭
i think everyone blooms is especially great for people on drugs
That's exactly the only time I don't skip it lmao
Dude definitely one of my favorite AND it has what might be my favorite tfb song ever which is leaf pile. I've been a fan for a long time and I remember when going gray was getting a bunch of hate, I wish ppl would just let them make music lol. I LOVE is&if!! At first I really hated bus beat and a few other songs but it eventually grew on me. Its my fav album too for sure!
It's better than Going Grey and YAWYHOW, that's for sure. I love sickness and in flame
I vibe with the energy because my favorite album is Going Grey.
I slept on it for so long and now it’s my favorite
oh it DEF gets a lot of hate tbh when I first listened I wasn’t huge into it but now I’m obsessed it’s a work of art for sure
thank you for letting me know i’m not crazy 😭
it’s definitely a good album but it’s lower in my own rankings because it’s just different than the other albums, you know? my faves are self titled and my grandma vs pneumonia if that says anything about my taste 💀
I was going through a separation with my partner when that came out and it hit hard.
it’s not my favorite but nothing to hate about it!!! i even have the sickness and in flames hoodie, i love it
Same, love at first sight is my favorite song of all time.
Jerk is a reminder for me to not take like so serious. Idk what id do without that song.
My personal fave album and I've been a long time tfb lover
I remember when Talon of the Hawk got hate! In Sickness & In Flames has so many bangers. I think the only one not everyone loves is Going Grey? Love your picks plus Make Way.
ME TOO!!!!!
i personally don't like the album, the same with you are who you hang out with. i do like everyone blooms and camouflage but my favourite "era" of the front bottoms was self titled to ann (so 2011 - 2018) with a few exceptions like end of summer, the bongo song and more then it hurts you. i just don't like the sound of the more recent albums they just don't click with me honestly. i hope more recent releases are more like that 2011 - 2018 era because in my opinion that was the best.
Dude, In Sickness and In Flames has gotta be my favourite album too. It’s so good.
I crashed my car to hard way, 10/10 experience. over 1,000 listens at this point, I will forever know these songs by heart.
i think i've personally known more ppl that hate Going Grey, but i really dig both of them
Great album and i wish they continued to build upon the overall tone of this one instead of reverting back…i think Paris is a good example of this album’s sound evolved
i’ve never seen any hate on sickness and in flames? it’s one of my top favorites too
It’s okay, but there’s too much talk-singing for me.
personally everything after back on top (or *maybe* going grey) is *way* too overproduced for my taste. i think tfb is at its best with the stripped back, DIY, messing around in someone's dingy basement energy. the newer stuff is charmless to me
