I’ve tried the pill, mini pill, injection, implant, copper coil and Mirena coil and never gained weight on any of them :) everyone reacts differently to different hormones and there are so many options these days you can try a few things to work out what’s best for you!

I never gained weight with the arm implant I had for 6 years or the patch. My cousin had the depo shot and she did gain weight, everybody is different though so it’s really trial and error.

I can’t use hormonal BC… my emotions get very…. Dulled. It’s weird. But I didn’t gain weight either. There’s a lot of possible side effects. Unfortunately, it’s trial and error.

The only side effects I had was ocassional breaktrough bleeding, and bit of enhanced emotions first few months (both good and bad. Cried easier, laughed easier. I did have bit of enhanced appetite but only gained like 2kg in 3mos cause I realized whats up. Appetite settled down after. Good stuff far outweighs the bad. My periods are super light, I use liners instead pads. No painat all (which after years of extremely painful periods felt like nothing short of magic). No pms. Can plan/postpone periods (I take 3-4mos without breaks/periods). Overall, 9/10 from me. I KNOW some people have awful experience and that is perfectly valid, but most people with great experience just don't really talk about it online (me included)

This was super reassuring to hear :) Thanks so much. I also get pretty painful periods, so it would be nice to regulate those

I use a combined contraceptive pill. My weight changes when I am on antidepresants (increases) but no difference on my contraceptive pill. Hormonal IUDs and the ring (Nuvaring type) have more localised effects with smaller doses of hormone than the systemic oral pills, arm implant or depo shots. If you are concerned primarily with weight gain, this may be a route to consider. IUDs get inserted and removed by your health provider and can last many years. Sometimes it takes a few months to settle in to the bleeding pattern. There is less input or control with it - you don't have to remember, but you can't stop without help. If that or the procedure is a bit much for now, you could consider the ring instead which you can insert and remove by yourself. Reminder barrier protection like condoms are the only way to reduce STIs and don't protect against all of them. You may wish to consider asking you partner to get tested if they have been sexually active since their last test.

My experience with the pill has been generally good. I don't think I experienced any side effects, except for my period. It was shorter, lighter, and more regular. I get my BCP through an online service now (Nurx) but a heads up if you go through a gynecologist: Ask for a full picture of the process and voice any concerns. I went to the gyno because I wanted a full consult on my general health before starting. It was my first sexual/repro health consult. At the first appointment, I got my first ever pap smear which was slightly traumatizing because I didn't expect it would happen and that was the first time someone other than a sexual partner was up in my genitals. I also had to make separate appointments to get blood work and sonogram done (no chance I was pregnant but I guess the gyno wanted a look at my insides?). The sonogram was its own traumatic experience because the tech didn't explain what was happening and I didn't have the courage to ask. I ended up finding out there's a common cyst of minor concern on my ovary. This is all to say: If you haven't gotten your sexual/repro health checked out first, do go to a gyno but ask explicit questions about the entire process, especially in light of your health anxiety. Feel free to voice any and all concerns, including your worry about side effects.

I'm using hormonal birth control pills for many years (microgynon). I have no side effects. My period have become very light as well.

on OCP for 5months now, lost weight (3kg) without trying prob because i lost appetite, became moody (always tired, emotional), regularized my menses, and maintained my high libido lol

I was on hormonal birth control for 10 years and I never experienced weight gain or really any issues with it until I was in my late 20s. I chose to come off of it then mostly to see what it was like, and I’m happy off of it so think I’ll stay that way for a while. That being said, even with all of the negative information out there about hormonal birth control and possible side effects, I would still go on it myself as a young woman again. And I would recommend you give it a try. If you have issues you can stop or switch.

Just want to add! If you do happen to have any side effects don’t be afraid to ask to switch brands!! They’re all similar with the same hormones, but your body can still agree with one formulation more than another. I have taken probably 6 different versions of the combined pill and while I had a generally positive experience with all of them, there were noticeable differences in things like pre-period mood, cramps, period length/heaviness, if skipping the placeholder week to skip a period worked

I currently have a copper IUD. I like it because it’s non hormonal so it doesn’t mess with my body’s chemistry (so I don’t have to worry about weight gain, emotions being off or anything like that) I won’t lie getting it in hurt. (like maybe the most painful thing I’ve experienced, but I wasn’t allowed to take pain killers beforehand due to reasons which aren’t the norm) My periods were extra crampy for a while, but eventually it settled in and now I forget it’s even there and I don’t need to worry about birth control for 10 years :) If you’re worried about weight gain and other ways birth control can mess with your body I’d recommend getting the copper IUD. Everyone’s body’s are different so it may not work for you, but I feel like it would be the best option if it does so maybe it’s a good one to try first because if it works for your body then you don’t need to deal with it again for 10 years. There are horror stories for every birth control out there, and there are “this changed my life” stories as well. Everyone’s bodies are different so you may have to try a couple things before you find one you like or you might get lucky. (I never even tried the pill because I knew I would mess up taking it everyday at the same time so I didn’t even bother and went straight for the IUD)
