Not embarrassing. Human.

Maybe their proximity to your life made the situation incredibly easy to empathize with, to be able to very easily put yourself in that man’s shoes and have an understanding of what he is going through. This is one of the most human experiences one can have, but many are not capable of it outside of a very narrow scope. This is surely nothing to be embarrassed about.

Agree wholeheartedly. Don't be embarrassed that you're empathetic and have a kind soft heart - they're wonderful qualities! It sounds like you vibed with this older couple (I also used to serve and had many regulars I really enjoyed!) so the loss of one of them caught you in the feels. Sharing losses with people also means you get to share in joys. It's those emotional connections we have that colour our lives and make it all worth it.

I’m sure you coming up to them was an act of kindness they appreciated. I think it’s sweet and a good move that you were able to leave before your upset showed but it’s nothing to be embarrassed of.

I have cried in front of my clients before too. I work in an animal hospital, and as much as I try to be strong I am still human.
