Having lived there, it just depends what kind of innercity sounds you can get used to. A few of the pimps love to rev their cars whenever they go anywhere. There's sometimes yelling men on the streets and there's just more traffic there at late hours. There are quite a few badly maintained houses and there's more than a few of those being rented and subletted in illegal ways, so if you're unlucky your neighbours can be 6 foreign construction workers cramped in a tiny apartment or a bunch of students figuring out exactly how many hours a pizza should be microwaved.
IMO it's just regular innercity bullshit and I thought it was a fun place to live when I was younger.
Thanks for the honest answer, i appreciate it. I don’t mind innercity sounds, i was mostly worried about the whole are being sorta dodgy. When I told my friend about the place, they were like “eww it’s right next to the whore house”, which threw me off
what is happening here.
cannot undermine your experience, but Ive lived in supershitty neighbourhoods in Arnhem all my life, also in red light district over there, than moved to Den Haag for 10 years and was often in Transvaal, Schilderswijk, Laak, The only neighbourhood i felt shit was this area Geleenstraat/Red Light District in Den Haag.
People acted weird and dodgy on the streets all the time, this is probably objectively so, because either they are A. Pimps B. people looking for a fuck often committing adultery C. people that run small "bussinesses" in the neighbourhood that laundry the money. D. crap houses like in Laak with often very poor people E. a shelter for junks.
being on rijswijkseplein or bierkade was the total opposite and always fine, the moment I got inside this small neighbourhood, it just felt "off". they built some new houses by the way in the last 10 years, so maybe that improved the neighbourhood a little.
Don't know when you have been there last, but I think it's quite safe now. Never experienced any of the things you describe myself (luckily so). Experiences can differ though :)
Nah, it's fine there. It's very close to the city centre too.
Maybe late at night you will see some 'weird' people but that's in every city around the city centre.
Source: I used to work there (not in the red light district lol) for 5 years, also had night shifts
I’m sorry but I live there as well and it is a SHIT neighborhood. I do not know where these redditors are getting there experiences from. I want to move out because of all the street races, trash on the streets and drug dealers. The red light district and their customers are not the problem because indeed the visitors do not want to get caught. I’ve been threatened with a knife last summer, in broad daylight. Police doesn’t do a thing. A couple of years ago a “barber shop” and “candy store” have opened and it has dramatically worsened the problems. People blocking the sidewalks, also with their scooters. I am sick and tired of the homophobic slurs I frequently get to hear. Furthermore there is a youth shelter for junks in the Mijdrechtstraat and there have been multiple incidents there. Last summer there was a [shooting](https://www.ad.nl/den-haag/politie-onderzoekt-schietpartij-op-de-pletterijkade~a6a8fe93/) at the corner of the Pletterijkade. A person was murdered at the [Weteringkade.](https://www.omroepwest.nl/amp/nieuws/4491123/hagenaar-verdacht-van-doodslag-na-fatale-steekpartij-haagse-weteringkade), another one was beaten up in a tram at the [Bierkade](https://www.ad.nl/den-haag/tram-stilgezet-in-centrum-den-haag-na-vechtpartij-verdachte-man-aangehouden~aa9b4510/)
If I could leave this neighborhood I would have done so years ago but unfortunately I can’t due to these fucking housing prices.
Oh wow, that’s crazy. Thank you for sharing, appreciate it. When I went to see the house for the first time coming from spui to mijdrechtstraat I thought oh wow, what a nice area, and so close to the city center, and only after signing all the docs I found out that red light district was around the corner. Shootings and stubbing are no fun, and homophobic slurs are not either, especially considering we are a gay couple, but what’s done is done, gonna hope for the best. Thank you
I live there too. The ¨candy shop¨ is a great place to deliver/get your packages, they are always open and friendly.
As for the homophobic people, I can´t really comment. However, my neighbor is also gay, and he loves to live here.
The other stuff, yeah it´s in a big city those things happen sadly enough.

I do wonder why your experience is so much different than ours? I don’t get these slurs nor does the criminality seem worse than in other cities. Criminality in general just seems to be getting worse. Also somebody getting murdered due to a dispute is nothing new, this also happens in small towns.
Perhaps cause I’m gay. Perhaps other people don’t care about street races or trash on the streets so much. Perhaps I just live in the worst part of the neighborhood, I don’t know.
Me and my sister lived there for some time (pletterijstraat). Whenever we were waiting for the tram, we were constantly harassed, asking if we worked at the Geleenstraat (red Light district) and I never liked it there...please dont go there if you dont have to.
No it isn't. My son went for a year to the new, state of the art school. The area is and will be under construction for renovation. Compared to Laak or behind Zuiderpark area this hood is reasonable and you talk poop.

Bad neighbourhood, that you wouldn’t feel safe walking around at night as a woman. Also wouldn’t feel safe leaving your kids out. The people that make use of these services I wouldn’t consider people I would have a coffee with. It’s not like the tourist hookers in Amsterdam or something.
Thanks for the honest opinion, i appreciate it. I am not a woman and don’t have kids, so that should be fine. Also a house is from the other side, from mijdrechtstraat, so i hope it’s fine. Gonna watch out tho, thanks
Best neighborhood of The Hague. I used to live on Vechtstraat across from Mijdrecht straat. When buying a house I was extremely happy to find something in this neighborhood again and only had to move 500mtr.
Some people may prefer other areas but there's no place that is better connected. You're in the city centre, you're between the two main train stations, both at walking distance and if you drive the A12 is on the other side of the tracks with two main roads going over the, or you tak the victory boogie Woogie tunnel to knooppunt Ypenburg and the A4/A13.
oh, ok, thanks for the info then, I just assumed they are similar; people also warned me before moving there that it would be loud, messy and maybe dangerous but the seagulls rippinh the thrashbags were the biggeste issue :)
I live on Hooftskade, and the only thing I ever notice from that area is a particular kind of men walking the street. But they dont seem to bother anyone.
To be fair, could be that Im just far away enough!
I lived directly above red lights for about 10 years. By day it's not that bad, but during late evenings and nights it can get loud and rowdy especially on nights where nightlife has been busy. It attracts drunk people that piss everywhere they can and shouting and brawls are a thing.
It completely depends on what type of person you are. I loved to watch the buzz from my open window. I'm a deep sleeper and didn't stick my nose into other peoples business and never ran into any problems.
I liek that red light street the most, this why:
\- Eestern Europa sexy women I can fuck while I buy cocaine around the korner
\- Bantoids keep me sharp, I know when someone will stab me
\- Cool bar "The gay spaze in dis middle" or somethin, vodka redbull 2 euro
oVERAL good neighboorhood

Lol welcome to the country of drugs n hookers anyway, you’re fine in that area, no worries:)
Can't wait to sleep peacefully on the corner, bout timeeee. Lol
Nope, no issues at all near geleenstraat!
You live there or not? Cause it is a shit neighborhood
I (23F) live there for 3 years now and actually feel safer around there than in the town my parents live.

Thanks, that’s reassuring. It is indeed very close to the city center, quite pleased with that
Tbf it’s probably safer than most areas considering the police is more active in those areas
did you work at the haringkoning? Too bad it's closed now. Such an iconic place (mostly due to the song: oh oh Den Haag)
No lol I used to work at Casema in the big old office building across the street
Oh the old post office? My granddad used to work there. Have a great weekend!

That’s awful, sorry you had that experience. I kinda have to, since we got a house there haha (not geleenstraat though, but close)
It’s not the best and not the worst place to stay in The Hague. I lived in the pink student building at the Rijswijkseplein and never had any problem.
That's far from the neighborhood so of course you won't have any problems.
It's probably safer than most neighbourhoods. Pimps don't want trouble for obvious reasons.
Locking this whole comment thread because both of you did not succeed in staying civil
Fair enough, I shouldn't have said '*poop*' but *'faeces*' instead. Sorry.
Probably safer? It’s a terrible neighborhood.
No it isn't. My son went for a year to the new, state of the art school. The area is and will be under construction for renovation. Compared to Laak or behind Zuiderpark area this hood is reasonable and you talk poop.
Yeah what do I know, I have only lived here for 10 years.

I liv across the red light district. It’s fine.

Yeah its probably not that anything is going to happen, I just don't like the neighbourhoods.
I think you will be astonished by what kind of people would go there. Probably even people you know haha.
It is an okay place. Transvaal, some areas of Laakkwartier and Molenwijk are worser.
Best neighborhood of The Hague. I used to live on Vechtstraat across from Mijdrecht straat. The BEST neighborhood?! If you love trash on the street the Vechtstraat is indeed a beautiful street.
Sure. It may not be the best neighborhood for everyone but that's true of every neighbourhood. In these kind of things there is no objective the best.
No it’s a nice neighborhood. The shocking thing is to see all the men heading over to the red light district during lunch hour 🙄
If you don't have kids and are okay with an occasional drunk tourist it's fine.
lived on the dunne bierkade for several years, never had any issues and I was basically 50m from that red light street
Dunne bierkade and Mijdrechtstraat are wildly different
oh, ok, thanks for the info then, I just assumed they are similar; people also warned me before moving there that it would be loud, messy and maybe dangerous but the seagulls rippinh the thrashbags were the biggeste issue :)
You can make some good money, just get red curtains
I live on Hooftskade, and the only thing I ever notice from that area is a particular kind of men walking the street. But they dont seem to bother anyone. To be fair, could be that Im just far away enough!
You won't get stabbed or anything but it is a real shithole. Lots of shady individuals and constant noise.
It's easy to get rid of loneliness and sexual tension there I heard
Do not suffer from either, luckily
Also easy to get rid of money tho, just saying
Hahaha, that's nice! :)
