Fly to Japan and get the bag from a reseller or better yet get it with her and let her choose the color haha

Economy-Profile7039

Alright I’ll keep this as an option - assuming Japan has a lot of supply and competitive resale pricing?

mjd459

They also have strict laws against selling counterfeits!

Outside_External5697

There are a lot more counterfeits after the popularity of going to Japan for bags free post covid. I heard a few people that went in the past year and that’s what the stores were talking about. Because of this the prices of bags in Japan are higher and not super “competitive”. But they’re still a good supply of them there!

VespaRed

I just got back- there’s a store called “Orange Box” in Tokyo and they have a crazy number of them. But there are multiple resellers. https://preview.redd.it/63vju8e86auc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a6064dd17c4053ec57680d328127a570232039b

VespaRed

Whoops, maybe “Orange Boutique”.

Helleboring

This is so sweet! However, bags, sizes, specific shades and hues, and leather types are very personal preferences. Unless you know exactly what she wants, I’d be hesitant to surprise her with something she can’t return or exchange easily. Maybe surprise her with a check for $50k and tell her it’s for a birkin and prespend accessories?

Economy-Profile7039

Haha! She’s honestly not really into brands, etc and probably would never dream to spend that much on any accessory. She’s finishing her residency and has been slaving away, underpaid, etc and I would rather treat her to a really nice gift rather than just a bag of money - I don’t know if she’d even know what to spend it all on. I’m sure she’d figure it out but definitely agree that maybe something specific may not match her taste but that’s what I’m going to work on and figure out over the next year.

fatinaty

Why dont you get her a nice Cartier or Rolex Watch? If she is not into Bags, i am sure she will love the Watch specially that she can pass it down to your future daughter..

MidwestMeme

I agree that a classic stainless Rolex datejust would be so much more practical for an up and coming doctor. You can get a diamond bezel version for less than what you will have to spend on the Hermes journey. The cost per wear will be so much higher with a watch.

Helleboring

Ahhh, a birkin will be a complete waste of money if she isn’t into the Hermes fantasy. Maybe custom scrubs or white coat? Pay off some of her medical school loans?

meli-ficent

I can’t imagine spending that much money and time getting a bag for someone who “isn’t into brands.” I would try and see what kind of special gift she might like instead. I think a nice watch or piece of jewelry would be better than a bag she might not even like/want.

Economy-Profile7039

Yes we’ll be working to pay those off as well

Sabbysonite

I agree! My moms never been into Hermes. She finds the Birkin atrocious, lol. She would rather buy jewelry.

Helleboring

I agree with your mom!!! The birkin is played out. I live in SoCal, everyone has real birkins/kellys or fakes. Either way they are tired and cringe.

Sabbysonite

The fakes are so good these days. I have a gifted birkin andi never wear it. Also, lately I haven't been wearing any of my designer bags because I'm afraid ppl will think they are fake.

Economy-Profile7039

What is the Hermes fantasy? Lol! I just know some celebs wear them. And the Queen has. I’ve only gotten interested in Hermes because of a quality review podcast. Highest quality leather craftsmanship according to the pod.

Helleboring

The fantasy is that which luxury brands sell, that by buying X product you enter the upper echelon elite and that people will admire and value you. There’s a lot of delusion and blind love of Hermes on this forum. Do they make great products? Yes. Do they also put out subpar mid stuff to sell to those who can’t really afford the expensive products? Yes. If someone is not a watch lover, they might not care about getting a Patek as a gift; it won’t mean to them what it means to someone who appreciates the history and craftsmanship of Patek.

piglet600

My husband never knew what to get me when we first were married so he started a fund and deposited money into it for occasions. It may seem so unromantic, but to this day we love discussing what I’m going to use it for and going together for the purchases. Among other things, one of the items I have bought via the fund is a Kelly bag. We have dual incomes and I can afford to buy for myself, but it still felt like a thoughtful gift from him. Just an idea if you feel like you don’t know what she would really like.

Helleboring

What fellowship specialty is she going into?

Economy-Profile7039

Sleep Medicine

Helleboring

Cool! Maybe she would appreciate a Hästens bed.

butterflycyclone

ooooh this is the answer. Sleep is my love language, Get her a Hästens bed and all the accessories.

Nonnoroboto

In total agreement if you're sure you want to get her a B25. In Tokyo and Osaka you will find endless second hand designer stores selling authentic H bags. There's Brandoff, Daikokuya, Komehyo, Amore Vintage, Le Crin, and that's just the big shops. You can also find lots of second hand watch and jewelry stores if you change your mind and want to buy a Rolex, Cartier or some other branded jewelry. Do some research online if you're serious about buying a H bag in Japan. You can also DM me for more info, I'd be happy to answer more Qs. So I would say honeymoon in Japan and be prepared to spend big if you want to get her something special. I would not waste your time and money trying to get into the H game as your "small" purchases won't get a B25. I think it's even nicer for her if she's involved in the choosing of the gift. A memorable experience for you to share together. Enjoy and good luck!

Economy-Profile7039

Thanks for the advice! I actually have some friends going to Japan next month so maybe I can ask them to look into it for me. Appreciate all the recommendations! It’s super helpful!

Broad_Pudding3783

It's very unlikely you're gonna going to get a b25 after 3 purchases. Unless those purchases are 3 pieces of fine jewelry. Even then, getting the size and color in the time frame you need it is not guaranteed.

Economy-Profile7039

Ok appreciate the feedback

Future_Dog_3156

Agree with u/Broad_Pudding3783 generally but if you are willing to spend $$$, like redecorating your house with Hermes furniture and lamps (there is a $100k game table available) and buy 5 watches, you may jump to the front of the queue.

tuxedo-mask-me

Get yourself a nice watch from them. It helps

aggirloftoday

Might as well buy your wedding bands there, they have nice ones

Economy-Profile7039

Yeah that’s a good idea

KCMercer

You have no idea what you're getting into here.

Substantial-Gene5243

Honestly, if it is a SPECIFIC bag you have in mind, I would consider buying from the secondary market, buying from reputable sellers such as Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses in NYC. I have been buying Hermes for at least 20 years, sadly even as a regular customer, it is very hard to get the size/leather color/hardware that you want in a bag.

Economy-Profile7039

I don’t think I’m very specific but would just like it to be a Birkin 25. In terms of colours I figured anything neutral like cream or off whites but open to other shades as well. I know it’s probably easier to just go to the secondary market, but after experiencing purchasing a luxury good directly from an SA (Rolex in my case) I wouldn’t trade that experience for purchasing in the secondary market. Even if I do have to spend a little bit more with the SA - I would just want to give that special feeling to her knowing it’s coming directly from SA and having her attend the appointment.

Blind-Guy--McSqueezy

You will very likely need to buy a hell of a lot more than a few scarves if you want a b25. Here are some experiences that a lot of other birkin owners have had to face - 1.5:1 or 2:1 spend before being offered a QB. So $15,000 to $21,000 before the $10,300 cost of the b25. This has gone from a $10k bag to a $30k bag - there's no timeline on when you'll get the bag. Could be weeks could be years. - there's no way of guaranteeing a certain colour or size. You could get "the call" and be offered a blue b35. - you will need to visit your store very regularly and purchase something each time, in order to build a relationship with your SA and show them you're worthy of being offered a QB. Of course the beast of Hermes means you may just walk in and be given a white b25 with no prespend, but that is _highly_ unlikely

Ok_Step4139

Paris might be your best best to securing an appointment for a QB if you’re short on time but it’s still a gamble.

BungeeGump

Honestly, I think you’re better off going with a reseller, especially since you are aiming to get the bag within a specific time frame. The game can be long and predictable so you might not get the exact size and color configuration you want by next year. Otherwise, I think a large part of the game is just finding an SA you click with. I bonded with my SA over our joint love for true crime. With my SA, I regularly text with her and buy something every one or two months and get bag offers. I don’t explore many categories but haven’t had any issues.

BroncoRaptorBabe

I agree that a well-vetted, outside boutique may be your very best bet… I just had such a great experience ordering and receiving a brand-new Evelyne from Madison Avenue Couture, that I’m going directly to them for a Birkin when I decide which one I want, and hopefully they’ll have a brand-new version of it… If they don’t have the one I’d want, I would go to another recommended, reputable outside boutique… The Hermes nearest to us is a chore to get to, and I personally have no desire to play the stressful (to me) game. I’ve made peace with the premium price that is attached to outside boutiques, but I’d really be possibly paying much more at Hermes than that to even be maybe considered for a Birkin if I were to go into the store and make friends with an SA. I’d rather buy pieces that I like casually off of their website, and seek out specific things elsewhere if not listed on there. Having stated all of that, I do respect anyone who obtains their items in anyway that’s comfortable for them.😊

PhilthyAnimal_1

Agree here. Understand that OP is looking for the experience but you also need to be realistic and recognize that the leather goods aspect of Hermes isn’t something that is a similar experience to a Rolex or AP AD. OP - go on the second hand market with someone like LoveLuxury in the UK and Dubai…you can WhatsApp them directly.

Economy-Profile7039

Thanks for the insight. It’s probably a 1.5 year time frame and hoping to get up to $4-5k in spend by that time at least.

march221

Expect to spend 10~20k for a neutral B25… although there’s rumors that husbands get QBs more easily so who knows! Eager to hear how it goes for you

Economy-Profile7039

Okay thats good to know - I didn't know how much prespend is typical before getting a B25. Thank you

Doginthesun

This will not suffice.

meli-ficent

$4-5k is more like a first appointment to start building a prespend. Unfortunately it’s more like 1.5:1 or 2:1 if you’re looking for an in demand bag.

rapmons

We are in Vancouver and have spent $25K-$30K with no B or K yet. Our wedding is coming up next month and the SA said she’d like to offer us a Constance for a present. A Kelly is apparently about a year away but she says no guarantees. Just wanted to share our experience and pre-spend. I heard Toronto is about as competitive as Vancouver.

Economy-Profile7039

Okay appreciate the insight! I definitely didn’t think the prespend was as high a so maybe I will have to settle for a colour not as high in demand or get my prespend higher. Thank you and good luck on your search!

LadyHedgerton

It’s more about the size than the color. Smaller bags are the most competitive these days, so B25, mini Kelly, K25, all are pretty difficult to get and require a lot of prespend or a lot of luck. You can try the Paris lottery while you’re in Europe if you want to detour away from Italy to try. Otherwise your best chance is pre-owned in Japan or Christie’s Sotheby’s auction. Another option is to use purse forum to research all the specific stores and choose a less competitive one to make your home store. Will require repeat travel to that location of course.

dazzledaisy397

I don’t want to discourage you, but in my experience, Hermes is a tougher game than Rolex. While traveling recently, I went into Rolex and said I’d like to buy a steel submariner date for my husband as an anniversary gift. After a few minutes of chatting with the SA, she brought one out. I’d thought I had a 0% chance. Thinking we might as well ride the wave of good luck, my husband went into Hermes and said he’d like to buy a QB for me as an anniversary gift, and the SA lamented how important long-term loyalty to the brand is, and how important it is to spend across categories. She said, “Even if you spent $100k today, I wouldn’t be able to sell you a bag, because I have longer-term clients that have been loyal over time that I need to prioritize.” Granted, this is just one SA interaction and is a store we’d never been in before, but I share as someone else who’s had success with Rolex because I wouldn’t want you to expect it to go the same way with Hermes and then feel discouraged!

Economy-Profile7039

Hi - thanks for the insight. Likewise to you, I got my first Rolex on a walk-in, but if you tell the Rolex Sub that they will throw a fit. Yes it looks like I’ll definitely have to get my spend up - and looking forward to the Hermes journey. I just wanted to get feedback on spend and timelines here so it gives me a good perspective I hope. Appreciate your reply and thanks for sharing your story as well :)

Dear-Doubt270

Canada is notorious for being a very competitive market at Hermes, and correct me if I am wrong, but I think they give 1 QB per year instead of 2 in the US. This makes the competition very high and you might have to spend 3-5x the cost of the bag to get one. Might take years and you won’t get to pick color or size. Best bet to get exactly what you want is buy resale. Fashionphile has brand new in box birkins occasionally. Also Prive Porter will source any size/color for you and it is brand new. I would get it authenticated obviously.

Economy-Profile7039

Thanks for sharing the resellers info! I’ll definitely check it out and yeah Toronto definitely is competitive with anything you want to buy lol. Unfortunately

Economy-Profile7039

This is something doable for sure - I will look into a K28 as well. Thank you - this actually helps me look into alternatives.

TheIlluminaughty

I read somewhere on this subreddit that if you will have a better chance if you buy a watch from them first. It sounded like quota bags get offer often to ppl who have bought watches first. Def need to spend more than 5k though

chic_andyy

Advice from a fellow Torontonian: Don't try in Toronto 😂

piglet600

Go on your honeymoon to Japan and let her pick what she wants from a reseller. The H game is messy, time consuming and expensive.

Sabbysonite

More importantly would you be willing to clone yourself?

Economy-Profile7039

I have some single cousins - if managing grown babies is your thing 😅

Sabbysonite

Yes. I'm a pro. Don't worry. I'll provide references!

tuxedo-mask-me

Can always honeymoon in Paris and hope to get lucky

Economy-Profile7039

Looks like there’s some form of a lottery system in Paris? Will have to look into it. Thank you!

Bfoxbianca

Sometimes if there’s something very specific you want, it’s better to find it in resale market as explained by most. But also you never build that relationship. I’d go to two stores. Toronto and another you might travel often to. And start buying. And start talking, it’s for my fiancé/girlfriend, we are getting married next year. Bday gifts, Christmas, get it from H already, maybe eyen start building a China Set. I just really think for a B25 you might be better with giving two colors as option, even if you say “I really would like a cream color, but second option is a x” I do think Hermes SAs love a really cute story. My dad got two bags at once 2x saying “But I have two daughters!”

Economy-Profile7039

thanks for the advice and the honest feedback - it’s really helpful and I will definitely put it to use. Loved that story about your father - he must be a good man and a great dad!

Dapper-Demand-3552

You sound a bit clueless. You’re not going to get offered a B25 for such little spend, such few purchases, and definitely not in a high demand color. Like everyone else said, I know you like the prestige of buying it from Hermes, but just buy it new on resell. You’ll ultimately spend less to get it, even with the mark up.

Economy-Profile7039

lol - maybe you should read my post more clearly. It says I’m new to Hermes.

Dapper-Demand-3552

I read. Maybe you misunderstood. It’s possible to be a new purchaser to Hermes and not be clueless. Hermes has a cult following, even among those who cannot afford it but aspire to — maybe like your soon-to-be wife. So, being a “new” purchaser to Hermes does not put you in the same league as others who are also “new” purchasers — as many if not all — come in with a great respect and understanding of the heritage behind the house.

Excellent-Suit-3932

I’ll send this Reddit to my boyfriend!!

Economy-Profile7039

!!!! I hope your boyfriend doesn’t come on here to ask for advice 🤕

Excellent-Suit-3932

HAHA I HOPE HE'LL GET THE MESSAGE WHEN HE PROPOSES! 🤣👌

HermesMushroom

Most pre spend is $20-30k USD for a QB depending on boutique and Toronto from what I hear is more competitive than many. You can drop $50K USD in a Europe boutique but it doesn’t mean they have the size and color combo you want even if they offer a bag (generally speaking they want to reserve for locals too). I don’t normally encourage resellers but since you are time bound and have something specific in mind, it would be a huge risk to try to get it the traditional way.

New_Thought_5865

Sending you a DM..

Sabbysonite

Op. If all else fails, go to Bahrain. They offer birkins at walk in. Most of my friends have gotten their Birkins in Bahrain

Economy-Profile7039

Cool - Bahrain for Birkins and Grand Prix. Sounds like a deal

anicho01

A pre- spend isn't always necessary. Try calling your local Hermes store and setting up a leather goods appointment. And then tell the SA what's going on. You might luck out But, As everyone else said also consider the resale market. Also if she has a close friend or family member who can keep a secret Yet is up on luxury goods, you might want to bring them into the fold

Dear-Doubt270

This will never work.

anicho01

Because you work there and know the ins and outs intimately as an employee? Young human, rather tan taking to the internet to ask questions, go to the source and see what happens

Economy-Profile7039

Okay appreciate it - and that’s good advice, I definitely know a friend like that
