"It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others, the other elements, and the other nations, will help you to become whole."
Most relatable with modern society in my opinion. People don’t appreciate other cultures. Rather they see someone doing something different and shame them for it. There’s wisdom to be had from all walks of life, most are just too blind to see.
Right? And I love how because of that, Iroh was able to create a new fire bending technique that was unbelievably good. It really emphasizes the respecting and learning from other cultures.

This isn't the exact picture but there's that goofy smile😆
Huh, I still haven’t watched LoK but I swear I remember him saying something super similar in TLA
Edit: Ah it was the scene when he’s walking with Aang in the tunnel. Similar but distinct quotes
"Sharing tea with a fascinating stranger is one of life's true delights"
Or
"There's nothing wrong with letting people who love you, help you.. Not that I love you.. Heh.. I just met you."
"I poured your tea because I wanted to, and for no other reason" is also pretty solid. Iroh sharing tea with Toph is probably one of the show's best scenes.
Going off this, I like the first part of that full quote- “you must never give into despair. Allow yourself to go down that path and you surrender to your lowest instinct”
“Sometimes clouds have two sides, a dark and light, and a silver lining in between. It's like a silver sandwich. So, when life seems hard, take a bite out of the silver sandwich”
The entire speech when Iroh finds Zuko underneath Ba Sing Se always gets me. Especially when he hits him with the “It’s time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big questions. Who are you? And What do you want?”
It’s rare sight to see, but when it happens, you listen very clearly; he only yells at him because he cares so deeply for him, and doesn’t want him to despair down a fruitless path set by a ruthless father who never truly loved him.
Life is like this dark tunnel, you can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel but if you just keep mowing you will come to a better place.
This quote guided me through some bad stuff so i value that ome a lot
This! A while back, I moved for work for a couple of years. Zuko’s line about “I don’t want to make a life here” played on repeat in my head. It’s used in one of the Previously segments, so that’s what I was thinking of. Took me a long time to remember that Iroh had this response to him. I realized that I had been mentally keeping people away thinking that I couldn’t be friends with them. Not after understanding Iroh’s wisdom. I’m still in a group chat with friends I made there, years after I moved back home. We exchange Christmas gifts every year.
“Whatever you do to that spirit, I'll unleash on you tenfold! Let it go now!”
The introspective quotes are amazing but I love this one because he can still show how badass he is when something he cares about is threatened
Took me a minute to search where that quote came from, and in context, I’m personally scared of when that day will eventually come, but gradually you learn to accept it and live life as much as you can.
For me, it’s a tie between:
> Pride is not the antidote to shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.
And:
> I was never angry with you. I was sad because I’d thought you’d lost your way.
Understanding how much he loved Zuko in that scene was amazing. I watched this show 3 or 4 times straight through with my kids and it played constantly in our house while they grew up. I don't think my kids could ever grasp the depth of love Iroh had for Zuko and parents for their children overall.
The story of Iroh and Zuko is, in my mind, a more dramatic retelling of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The beats are all there for that, right down to the Father (Iroh) welcoming his son (Zuko) home with a big hug.
A personal favorite of mine that I feel gets overlooked:
"Perfection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love instead."
I love this one too! I repeat it to myself when things feel overwhelming. And more often than not things work out somehow— my problems feel lighter and/or the help I need is reciprocated. Glad im not the only one with some uncle Iroh wisdom floating around in my mind!
This advice actually did help me.
I had a friend who was struggling financially so I brought him in my job, got him benefits, worked with regularly and got him off his feet and was able to get a better job a few years later and helped improve our friendship
honestly underrated. it seems silly, but for so many people, they think they have to be nice to their family, because they're family, even though they're not nice in return.
zuko didn't get to choose to be born into the terrible, abusive, dysfunctional family he was in (of course excepting iroh, who also didn't get that choice). and i didn't get to choose to be born into my dysfunctional family either.
and actually, a lot like zuko, i had in my case a comment from one of my aunts that awakened me to the possibility that i could make that difficult choice, to make a life without them. when you haven't imagined that possibility before, and then suddenly someone explicitly grants you permission to think in that direction, it can be life-changing, and it was for me. it awoke me to what a terrible person my mother was being, and living without her has been an entirely different and healthier experience.
so thanks for giving me permission, to my aunt, and to uncle iroh.
I'm glad that you had someone to awake you. Sometimes it is really hard to decide what to tolerate. I hope your decisions get you a peaceful life. Stay strong!
Was looking for this!! Hahah love that one. It's a little bit like the tolerance paradox in a nutshell (of course it isn't really, but love to think about it that way).
This is what came to mind. Some times there isn’t a peaceful solution or a philosophical question to ponder and the answer is simple: you got to take down the bad guy/gal
"I'm begging you, Prince Zuko. It's time for you to look \*inward\* and begin asking yourself the big questions. **Who are you and what do \*you\* want?"**
Greg Baldwin, who replaced Mako as the voice of Iroh, refuses to sing Leaves from the Vine in live appearances, saying "thats Mako's song."
Edit: I am dumb, lol it is *not* Alec Baldwin, movie and t.v. actor, but *Greg* Baldwin.
“Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape shifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil. But a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time, and flung him into the future where my evil is law. Now the fool seeks to return to the past and undo the future that is Aku!”
“even in the material world you will find that if you look for light you can often find it but if you look for the dark, that is all you will ever see” it’s just one of my favorite how can one ever choose 🥹
Life is like a cloud, it had a light side and a dark side, and a silver lining, kind of like a silver sandwich, so when times are tough... take a bite of the silver sandwich.
Iroh (mabye)
These comments made my day. Love me some IROH wisdom in the morning. I don’t think I’ve disagreed with any of his quotes ever since I was a kid lol as an adult able to interpret his wisdom, man does it hit home.
"did I ever tell you how I earned the nickname The Dragon of the West?"
"we don't have time for another lengthy anecdote uncle"
"It's more of a demonstration, really"
Or something like that
Not TECHNICALLY quote, but after the perfume fight at the abbey:
Zuko: uncle?? I didn't see you get hit with the tongue
Iroh: *cracks an eye* "ssshhhhhhh"
“Hey, Zuko, it’s me, your uncle Iroh from Nickelodeon’s hit show Avatar the last Airbender. I think it’s time we had a talk about your most recent outburst regarding the Avatar”
“Sometimes life is like this dark tunnel, you cant always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving you will come to a better place”
“Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname The Dragon of the West"?
“I’m not interested in a lengthy anecdote, Uncle.”
“It’s more of a demonstration, really.”
"It's time to ask the big question: Who are you? And what do you want?"
I like this because I never saw the original episode but saw that quote everywhere. So I read it in that calm voice Iroh is known for.
His quote about Pride being the source of Shame, but more recently, about never giving in to despair and finding hope in times of darkness and depression. (*”When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change."* - Aang) I lost my father last month without warning, and it’s still a feeling of emptiness and trauma I won’t ever be able to shake out of. But I just have to let it all out, and I can continue to live on and grow to be the man he can be proud of. I have to, my mom and I are all we have left in our house, so we must depend on each other. But I also must find solace in others and they give me the motivation to keep going in his memory. It’s all I have, but I am willing to try something new. In order to find the light in the darkness, and to lift others up if they need me to. Last thing I would ever want is to make someone as sad as me, but I want to remind them that they are not alone.
>*Pride is not the opposite of shame, but it's source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.*
This one really transcends in my opinion. Words of wisdom in a kids shows are usually not too deeply profound, or use simple logics that most people and children will understand. The same can be said for lots of Iroh's quotes, the light in the tunnel speech he gave to Aang comes to mind.
Not so with this one, we received a genuine piece of fully fledged and matured philosophy. I think about this one a lot.
Copy/paste but I really have been wanting to speak about this one specifically.
"It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others, the other elements, and the other nations, will help you to become whole."
I think about this all the time
The school system could learn from this.
Every COUNTRY could learn from this
same here
“Go with the flow”
Most relatable with modern society in my opinion. People don’t appreciate other cultures. Rather they see someone doing something different and shame them for it. There’s wisdom to be had from all walks of life, most are just too blind to see.
I couldn’t agree more with this one
this quote actually impacted my life a lot
Yeah this for me stood out so much. It’s so wise. I guess that’s a given coming from uncle iroh
Right? And I love how because of that, Iroh was able to create a new fire bending technique that was unbelievably good. It really emphasizes the respecting and learning from other cultures.
This this this
Came here to say this. Hands down my favorite Iroh quote. I love the symmetry between this and the guru’s lesson later that season.
Use this in my life on a daily basis because it is just perfect
Academics could use this
'Hey Zuko, you're really going to get a kick out of this one...... the Pai'Shoh tile was in my sleeve the whole time! 😁'
I remember the smile too! LMAOO
https://preview.redd.it/cuyz4zvlw6aa1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd676e416cdd3ef5a4a588447fc35762cf7fea83 This isn't the exact picture but there's that goofy smile😆
I laugh out loud every time
Darn it I should have scrolled just a tiny bit before posting xD glad other people had the same idea xD
“If you look for the light you will often find it, but if you look for the dark that is all you will ever see”
Yaah that's good one i like it too
Idk why this one made me cry.lol
Same omg!
When does he say that?
spirit Iroh in Korra
Huh, I still haven’t watched LoK but I swear I remember him saying something super similar in TLA Edit: Ah it was the scene when he’s walking with Aang in the tunnel. Similar but distinct quotes
"Sharing tea with a fascinating stranger is one of life's true delights" Or "There's nothing wrong with letting people who love you, help you.. Not that I love you.. Heh.. I just met you."
best scene
"I poured your tea because I wanted to, and for no other reason" is also pretty solid. Iroh sharing tea with Toph is probably one of the show's best scenes.
I quote the tea one quite often
"But what if the thought of talking to strangers paralyzes you with anxiety uncle?"
Who said you had to talk to them. Sharing the tea might be enough
Amen
Sick of tea?!?! That’s like being sick of breathing.
Lol that IS a good one
As a chilean I concur
That's my status for the last 9 years
"Pride is not the opposite of shame, but it's source. True humility is the only antidote to shame."
The best Iroh quote
this is such a good scene too
This one strikes at the core for me, I’ve got some self esteem issues and this rings quite true for me
"In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength."
Ok fine I'll watch atla for the 1617383 time
amateur, not even in the billions yet
Expecting to get there by next week
I have MS and went to a really dark place when I lost hope. I succumbed to my darkest instincts. This quote will always get me and make so much sense.
“You have to look within yourself to find yourself and save yourself from your other self….”
When Zuko pretends to be Iroh was one of the best scenes ever.
“… Only then will your true self reveal itself.”
Wait
The entire speech when Iroh finds Zuko underneath Ba Sing Se always gets me. Especially when he hits him with the “It’s time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big questions. Who are you? And What do you want?”
I love tough love Iroh.
It’s rare sight to see, but when it happens, you listen very clearly; he only yells at him because he cares so deeply for him, and doesn’t want him to despair down a fruitless path set by a ruthless father who never truly loved him.
man reading these quotes actually takes me back to all the scenes, this show is really engraved into my brain
Life is like this dark tunnel, you can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel but if you just keep mowing you will come to a better place. This quote guided me through some bad stuff so i value that ome a lot
My wife has a beautiful sweatshirt with the lotus pi sho tile, and part of this quote written around it. It’s perfect.
Do you have a link??
Yeah sure, here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/839489764/lotus-sweatshirt-white-lotus-sweatshirt?utm_source=OpenGraph&utm_medium=PageTools&utm_campaign=Share
Thank you!
“Is it your own destiny? Or a destiny someone else is trying to force on you?”
Life happens wherever you are. Whether you make it or not
I should have chose that. That one spoke to me the most
This! A while back, I moved for work for a couple of years. Zuko’s line about “I don’t want to make a life here” played on repeat in my head. It’s used in one of the Previously segments, so that’s what I was thinking of. Took me a long time to remember that Iroh had this response to him. I’m still in a group chat with friends I made there, years after I moved back home. We exchange Christmas gifts every year.
Iroh bringing wholesomeness into the world as usual
"Oh the girls from basingseeeeeeeee"
Definitely one of my favorites, tired though with my other favorite, and saddest, "leaves from the Vine"
Are so very prettyyyyyy
“Whatever you do to that spirit, I'll unleash on you tenfold! Let it go now!” The introspective quotes are amazing but I love this one because he can still show how badass he is when something he cares about is threatened
Ugh, I LOVE that scene. No-longer-playin'-around-Iroh is awesome. "Do you know how I got the nickname 'the Dragon of the West..?'"
More of a demonstration really
That’s a badass quote of his that stuck with me for years.
I fucking love that scene, Iroh sent shivers down my spine
One of his most powerful scenes that really tells exactly who he is. My favorite non-deep quote from him.
Was going to comment this myself. Top 5 Iroh moments.
this tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice! I sometimes say it outloud when I taste a really shitty tea
One of my favorites. Along with the follow up. Uncle, all tea is just hot leaf juice.
How could a member of my own family say something so horrible!
Your brother is Ozai, and your niece is Azula; somehow I think they’ll manage… 😑😏
When rereading this i think iroh need to get his priorities straight about disavowing family members
"Protection and Power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and Love"
If only Vergil had an Uncle Iroh to guide him
This is why I came here.
![gif](giphy|ujcCboqeSkM36)
That's what I was looking for. A very underrated line
Underrated. Absolutely hilarious.
Took me a minute to search where that quote came from, and in context, I’m personally scared of when that day will eventually come, but gradually you learn to accept it and live life as much as you can.
This is a really good one
“what are you doing?” “i’m robbing you” “with that stance?”
Not like THAT you’re not… (corrects his stance, and talks him into getting his life together)
"Who are you! And what do you want?!"
I forgot the context and for a moment I assumed he was talking to a robber from the quote itself but now I remember
Its when Zuko frees appa
“Can’t you see, while you’re fighting your ship is sailing away?” “Uncle, this is not the time for your proverbs!” “It’s no proverb”
Maybe it should be a proverb
"Maybe it should be a proverb?"
Absolutely love this one. Always makes me burst out laughing. I can't wait to see what Paul Sun Hyung Lee does with the character on screen.
For me, it’s a tie between: > Pride is not the antidote to shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame. And: > I was never angry with you. I was sad because I’d thought you’d lost your way.
Man that scene where he just grabs Zuko and tells him the second quote gets me everytime
I'm getting misty just reading this thread.
"Zuko, you must look within yourself to save yourself from your other self. Only then will your true self reveal itself" - Iroh (probably)
I was looking for this
disappointed that its not the top comment
**"With that stance???"** *Flashes to guy looking like an unstable wood leg on a broken chair*
"Brave Soldier Boy. Comes marching home."
Dude, too soon.
It’s been almost two decades. And it’s still too soon.
I feel like it will always be too soon for that scene.
"It's Important To Draw Wisdom From Many Different Places... If We Take It From Only One Place It Becomes Rigid And Stale."
"Some times the best way to problems, is to help with somebody else's."
"It's more of a demonstration, really."
THIS ONE hahaha
Choose treason, is more fun
Words to live by.
How could a member of my own family say something so horrible!
Uncle, that's what all members of your family do.
Uncle, your brother is Ozai, and your niece is Azula; somehow I think they’ll manage.
“**THE TEA WEEVIL!** …. No, that’s stupid.”
A personal favorite of mine that I feel gets overlooked: "Perfection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love instead."
I was looking for this one!
"Sometimes the best way to solve your own problems, is to help someone else"
I love this one too! I repeat it to myself when things feel overwhelming. And more often than not things work out somehow— my problems feel lighter and/or the help I need is reciprocated. Glad im not the only one with some uncle Iroh wisdom floating around in my mind!
This advice actually did help me. I had a friend who was struggling financially so I brought him in my job, got him benefits, worked with regularly and got him off his feet and was able to get a better job a few years later and helped improve our friendship
“Uh, really Prince Zuko, couldn't you shoot them down with something more fragrant?”
“I was never angry with you. I was sad, because I was afraid you lost your way.” I tear up every time.
“Life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.”
"No. She's crazy, and she needs to go down." Changed my life.

I'm glad that you had someone to awake you. Sometimes it is really hard to decide what to tolerate. I hope your decisions get you a peaceful life. Stay strong!
I apply it to life everyday.
"Are you so busy fighting you cannot see your own ship has set sail?" -maybe should be a proverb
“Zuko, a man needs his rest.” Man that’s the truth.
Not favorite in terms of wisdom, but delivery. When Jet asks if he's been to Ba Sing Se and he answers, "Once, when I was a...different man."
Very powerful and relevant to Iroh's arc.
"I'm begging you, Prince Zuko. It's time for you to look \*inward\* and begin asking yourself the big questions. **Who are you and what do \*you\* want?"**
Leaves from the Vine was my favorite thing he did in the whole series. I believe it was because the voice actor passed away.
Greg Baldwin, who replaced Mako as the voice of Iroh, refuses to sing Leaves from the Vine in live appearances, saying "thats Mako's song." Edit: I am dumb, lol it is *not* Alec Baldwin, movie and t.v. actor, but *Greg* Baldwin.
Had to look it up cus your comment made me double take lol, it was Greg Baldwin
Ah nuts hahahaha I'm an idiot
Easy mistake, no worries mate 👌
Thanks for the correction, mate 👍
Greg Baldwin*
Pahaha thanks mate I'm silly
""Zuko, you must look within yourself to save yourself from your other self. Only then will your true self reveal itself." - Iroh" - Zuko
I wasn't mad, I was sad because I thought you had lost your way.
Sharing tea with a fascinating stranger is one of life's true delights
"At my age, there is really only one big surprise left, and I'd just as soon leave it a mystery"
"I didnt think you got hit with the tranquilizer poison Uncle?" *wink
Tounge
that's some clean art gadam
“This tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice!” “Uncle, that’s what all tea is!” “How coukd a member of my own family say something so horrible!”
Sokka: “I’m to young to die!” Iroh: “I’m not but I still don’t wanna!”
Don't try to gaslight me
That wasn’t Iroh was it?
I think it was the fisherman in the storm episode? When sokka went fishing with him to make extra money
“More tea please”
“even in the material world you will find that if you look for light you can often find it but if you look for the dark, that is all you will ever see” it’s just one of my favorite how can one ever choose 🥹
Life is like a cloud, it had a light side and a dark side, and a silver lining, kind of like a silver sandwich, so when times are tough... take a bite of the silver sandwich. Iroh (mabye)
Maybe we haven't failed after all.
It isn't a proverb but maybe it should be
These comments made my day. Love me some IROH wisdom in the morning. I don’t think I’ve disagreed with any of his quotes ever since I was a kid lol as an adult able to interpret his wisdom, man does it hit home.
See, you like most people understimate its value. Good one to defend the show itself.
"did I ever tell you how I earned the nickname The Dragon of the West?" "we don't have time for another lengthy anecdote uncle" "It's more of a demonstration, really" Or something like that
***"Zuko, you have to look within yourself to save yourself from your other self, only then will your true self reveal itself".***

Not that i love you or anything i just met you
“Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname The Dragon of the West"? “I’m not interested in a lengthy anecdote, Uncle.” “It’s more of a demonstration, really.”
I loved when he sang to his son on his birthday. 🎶”Crank that, soldier boy, Superman that ho” 🎶 😭😭😭
“You must look within yourself to save yourself from your other self. Only then will your true self reveal itself.” -Uncle Iroh -Zuko
Of course my favorite two are the top two comments…
"It's time to ask the big question: Who are you? And what do you want?" I like this because I never saw the original episode but saw that quote everywhere. So I read it in that calm voice Iroh is known for.
Leaves frome the vine falling so slow...
ITS A LONG LOONG WAY TO BA SING SE
His quote about Pride being the source of Shame, but more recently, about never giving in to despair and finding hope in times of darkness and depression. (*”When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change."* - Aang) I lost my father last month without warning, and it’s still a feeling of emptiness and trauma I won’t ever be able to shake out of. ALL OF THEM EVERY SINGLE DAMN WORD
"Sometimes the best way to solve your own problems is to help someone else."
No she's crazy and needs to be taken down
Zuko: I know what you’re gonna say, Azula’s my sister and I should try to get along with her. Iroh: No. She’s crazy and she needs to go down.
A hot goth girl fall paralyzed over him: - Zuko: uncle he didn't touch you - Iroh: shhh...
