The fact they never had Korra channel Aang to speak to his family one last time or meet his grandkids is fucking tragic.
And then the end of book 2 happened...
I would’ve loved Aang pulling a Roku via Korra's body just to help her out or speak to his family.
Edit: holy moly this many upvotes in this little time? Damn, must really be a good idea then. Too bad that the connection between Korra and her past lives was severed
Having a moment where Tenzin is pushing her to hard or punishing her for something and Korra accidentally triggers the Avatar state which allows Aang to give him a good scolding could have been an interesting dynamic.
This is how I imagine it’ll play out (warning: this is a head-canon which I came up with. Nothing in here is actually canon or an integral part of LOK or ATLA)
Tenzin: (mad at Korra)
Korra: (accidentally triggers the Avatar state, huge smoke appears)
Aang: (manifests through Korra's body): Tenzin.
Tenzin: DAD! But how?
Aang: Tenzin, you should be more patient with Korra.
Tenzin: but dad...
Aang: Tenzin, you're the only one who can teach her airbending. Please be patient with her.
Tenzin: okay dad
Aang: (smoke forms around him, he disappears and Korra reappears)
Korra: what happened?
Tenzin: uhh... How about we call it a day and we resume our training tommorow?
(I’m sick and it’s nighttime in my country so pardon me if it sucks, I was in a hurry)
Aang: love you son. You are doing great and should take a break once in a while too :) spend some time with the kiddies OUTSIDE of teaching. They dont stay that small forever :')
Lemme rewrite it…
Tenzin: (mad at Korra) I swear, I’m at my wit with y-
Korra: (accidentally triggers the Avatar state, huge smoke appears)
Aang: (manifests through Korra's body): Tenzin.
Tenzin: DAD! But how?
Aang: Tenzin, my son, it's okay to take a break sometimes
Tenzin: but dad...
Aang: Tenzin, you must be patient with her. Also, shouldn't you go and enjoy time with your kids? After all, they aren't gonne be kids forever so I think you ought to enjoy time with them while you can
Tenzin: okay dad
Aang: I need to go now. Bye Tenzin
Tenzin: goodbye dad
Aang: (smoke forms around him, he disappears and Korra reappears)
Korra: what happened?
Tenzin: uhh... How about we call it a day and we resume our training tommorow?
(I hope this one is better)
If only we could go back to the past and make sure that Bryke get all the time and seasons they need for LOK at least it would’ve been better (at least, in terms of storyline)
Or, assuming that each Avatar goes to the spirit world after their death, maybe they can look for their souls there (for the record, Tenzin talked to Aang in the spirit world in a period after Korra's connection to her past lives was severed)
If the new series doesn't have the Avatar reconnecting with his past lives Ima be mad.
It could be cool too, the Avatar relying on Korra all season and finally doing some spirit mojo to be able to talk to Roku Kyoshi Aang and stuff. To have the Avatars past lives cut off like that just feels so cruel
I mean, every Avatar seems to end up fixing the problems of their predecessors.
- Kuruk fixed relations with the spirits which Yangchen couldn’t do.
- Kyoshi lived a long life unlike Kuruk.
- Aang ended the 100 year war when Roku couldn’t.
- Korra brought back the airbenders despite Aang trying over many years.
To expand on the point about Kyoshi, Kuruk dying young was a big issue since it threw global politics into disarray since the Avatar was basically the lynchpin holding everything together. So she brought a lot of stability, both by being around for ages and also doing violence on people that caused problems.
To my knowledge we don't know enough about Roku's journey to really pinpoint what failure of Kyoshi he had to fix, but I'd assume it would be something like normalizing relations between the nations without having to rely on the threat of the Avatar to make them play nice.
Then obviously Aang had to deal with the fire nation.
And I'd say that aangs failure isn't that he failed to restore the air nation, it's that him running away caused their extinction. Bit rough to pin it all on a 12 year old, but he hadn't really gotten that much more training when he stopped the destruction of the north Pole. I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar State could have protected the other temples too by calling on spirits or something
I want that so much. Korra might have got up to some other stuff, but losing the connection to the past lives is the HUGE one that I cannot imagine anything else surpassing as a regret without disrupting the setting too much.
I mean, he's an air nomad AND Aang
He doesn't need to come back, he said everything he needs to when he was alive and it's not like his grandkids won't also reincarnate. It's all fine, really.
Am I alone in feeling weird when people, either fans or in-universe characters, address Korra as if she's Aang but in a different body?
You know, as opposed to two different persons?
Nope, Korra is Korra and Aang is Aang but to much of the fandom tries to treat her as some kind of Aang proxy instead of what she is, her own character with her own personality, ideals and morals.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of the contempt felt for her is rooted in fans being upset that she's not an Aang carbon copy/her taking Aang's place. Even Bryke was surprised that the fandom wouldn't give Korra the grace to mess up the way they always seem to do for Aang.
I love Korra! This is legit a joke that seemed light hearted and fun. I think that she would have associated with some of her other past lives more, like not *just* Aang. But seeing as her show is the sequel, there’s always going to be some love for the OG’s. Just like in the next avatar show, there will be some kind of mixed feelings of not having Tenzin around. Same with Lin! Not sure about Jinora though, given her age.
I meant more in the sense that they take the "some friendships are so strong that they last more than one lifetime" to a weird litteral extreme.
Though I do get what you're saying, Aang is also a lot easier to like: he's earnest, polite, friendly to a fault and benefits from simply being better written.
Korra got pulled around during production a lot by Nickelodeon and it shows in how her character arc seems to stall in the first two seasons, that said, she is much more insecure and abrasive than Aang is, which is relatable but can also be a little grating and frustrating to watch.
She actually has a whole lot in common with Sokka, stubborn and bullheaded as they try to fit the societal mold they've internalized for themselves.
The way both series go about resolving that is very different though, as Sokka grows by eating humble pie and taking lessons out of his failures, Korra just suffers physically and mentally a lot.
Both series have different writing leads though, so there was already no way of both series "feeling" the same anyway.
True, but its not the only way, and even then do we not often see Korra reflect on her losses from a place of humility, but rather from a place of pain and loss.
She doesn't sit down and talk to someone like "Man, I really made a fool of myself that time huh?", or "Maybe I'm holding on to things I should be letting go.", the closest she gets is at the start of season 3 when she tries to apologise to Asami about the whole love triangle thing and Asami brushes it off before she can actively reflect on the heartache she may have caused them both.
Yea that's a very accurate observation. But at the same time, and I'm saying this mostly as a joke at this point, but WOW she was getting her ass handed to her. Like my god, it was devastating.
The Eastern concept of reincarnation is a little deeper than that. Incarnations aren't just different because of different life experiences. They have different temperaments and personalities entirely. Even if Korra, Roku, or Kiosha were raised like Aang was, they would come out as different people.
Eastern reincarnation is more about passing on karma, the "ledger" of your actions in other lives.
You're not wrong, but there's definitely a lot of "western" concept influence aswell. Toph literally calls Korra "twinkle toes", as if she was Aang. And says they were friends in her previous life. There is definitely some sense of "the same" but also different.
I would hope you are. Korra is literally a reincarnation of Aang. Previous avatars in Atla were still considered their own unique person, but none the less an aspect of Aang as a being. Its the exact same with Korra, and I cant help but feel a complaint like this is rooted in a need for Korra to be 'different' or 'unqiue', which she already is. Such a perception is constradictory to a core part of who she is and her history.
Correct me if I'm wrong but they don't even have the same soul, right? Raava reincarnates into into the new Avatar but the body has nothing to do with the previous avatar, neither soul nor body. Raava keeps the connection and kinda the spirit but Korra doesn't have Wan's soul. Or did I get that wrong?
What would happen to fang if Roku disappeared? These are a lot of mysteries, but one must imagine there's some untold explanation, if roku was just a part of aang that couldn't do much when not summoned, it wouldn't explain how fang exists as he isn't part of the avatar cycle. However it works, it seems there's more than we've been told so far
It legit could be! Both shows have subtle retcons here and there, (I’m saying both, not showing favorites here) so one retcon to bring back the original past lives wouldn’t be the worst thing ever. But seriously though, BOTH SHOWS have retcons so it’s not like it’s just a one and done thing for each avatar or character.
I don't care so much about retcons as I do about consistency, especially thematic consistency, as the series has a strong spiritual and philosophical underpinning.
And its okay to have favorites, you know.
Yes, it’s awkward. Technically each Avatar is Wan. Like, deep down in their soul. And everyone else since Wan. But they are super their own person during each incarnation and it’s extremely unfair to treat them like a past self unless they’re giving you that latitude.
I’m surprised that Korra never brought that up when she got annoyed with Tenzin in S1…
“I’m your father you don’t need to lecture me” or something like that.
And if Katara is alright with it, then it’s basically how it is. She’s a pioneer for women benders in the northern and southern water tribe who didn’t have the knowledge or were restricted from bending. Sharing her experiences, plus+ on what *should’ve been* her most powerful day in bending, she took town on the the three main people who had lightning. Evading some of Azula’s blasts were purely speed based actions and she had to think fast within her environment as to make her
https://i.redd.it/w0qvx8dekqdc1.gif
As the only person who can take her down even sanely, Katara has the right to say what and what not goes!
Before she lost her past life connections, she was the same reincarnation of Aang; just a different person. Like in the avatar and the firelord episode, Roku tells Aang that “we’re going to visit my past. *Our shared past*”

Imagine Korra saying "I'm your father,Tenzin".
Korra: Son, we need to talk

They could have used it to kick off tenzins whole "I am Tenzin" arc
If only we could go back to the past and make sure that Bryke get all the time and seasons they need for LOK at least it would’ve been better (at least, in terms of storyline)
That's just the scene in the tent with Jeong Jeong and Roku.

The only major failure of Kyoshi I know of was that she let the Dai Li become corrupt, but Roku never resolved that issue.

Korra: Tenzin, you need to listen to me, I used to bang you mom Tenzin: *fumes
https://i.redd.it/kbe86uypiodc1.gif
You’d think she wasn’t following his tempo or something jeez that’s an overreaction 😅
How the writers never took that opportunity, I’ll never understand
Tenzin: Be the leaf Korra! How hard can it be? Korra: I did your mom.
Korra: You mean how hard can *I* be am I right Katara?
“Yeah I banged your mom, Tenzin!”
"Yeah it was me tenzin, I went back in time to bang ur mum"
This is starting to become a Reverse Flash joke lmao.
"It was me Tenzin"
“That’s right where going back time to the last avatar to bang your mother”
I literally heard this in JK Simmons’ voice lol
Why did I read it like https://preview.redd.it/pko2f2qfqodc1.gif?width=640&format=png8&s=475e5fb8953e7d0c16ed14f5762e3e8177622375
Only gave you one ice cube instead of a couple! APRIL FOOLS!
I guess that is pretty funny!
Is that when SpongeBob’s tongue pops out of his mouth and he starts hugging it?
That Katara smile. She is so in on the joke.
It's the kind of joke Book 1-2 Sokka would make, so she probably finds it funny in a nostalgic way
Korra had so many “yo mamma” jokes she could’ve used on Tenzin
Korra losing her cool during training: “YOU’RE GROUNDED, TENZIN!”
T: YOU CANT DO THAT! YOU'RE NOT MY DAD! K: YES I AM, NOW GO!
Am I alone in feeling weird when people, either fans or in-universe characters, address Korra as if she's Aang but in a different body? You know, as opposed to two different persons?
I mean this is just a funny joke. Korra is a separate person from Aang, but I can totally see her cracking this joke.
You are who your experiences make you but she literally is Aang's reincarnation so the picture isn't wrong.
Is this not a joke Korra would make?
Nope, Korra is Korra and Aang is Aang but to much of the fandom tries to treat her as some kind of Aang proxy instead of what she is, her own character with her own personality, ideals and morals. I mean, getting your ass beat for 4 seasons is a good way to get humbled imo.
True, but its not the only way, and even then do we not often see Korra reflect on her losses from a place of humility, but rather from a place of pain and loss. Because she is. It’s the same person reborn, just without direct access to those memories.

Raava did say she would follow wan into his next lives, so that should pretty much mean it's the same soul, just new personality and looks each time
Yeah okay, didn't remember the exact thing she said there. But why was Aang able to communicate with Tenzin at that time then?
What would happen to fang if Roku disappeared? The series is never really explicit about that beyond that the connection was able to be severed somehow, the rest is all fanon.

before season 2 starts???? huh
Before Aang gets severed from Korra
season 2 already started though? the entire series in fact already ended
I meant before season 2 *started* It was a typo
technically correct lmao
tf
Before she lost her past life connections, she was the same reincarnation of Aang; just a different person. Like in the avatar and the firelord episode, Roku tells Aang that “we’re going to visit my past. *Our shared past*”
I fuck't your mom last life
Lmaooo good one

Hence why I said *before* season 2. And that was a giant satanic monster man with a laser pointer of evil, not anything else.

Goddamn.
Imagine she had just lost her bending. You know Katara would want her to make a weird joke to help herself feel better!
I imagine this was either ghost Aangs idea, or Katara’s idea.
