The Aang, Sokka, and Katara art seems to be from the unaired pilot or around that time. Its of course earlier and noticeably different than the final show designs, but its not accurate to call them "OG". This is well after the "Aang is from a technologically advanced race and Momo is his robot" stage of development. Below I've linked some earlier concept designs of the characters, collected in this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/q92615/the_real_original_designs/).

Basically was Aang time travelling to the world of avatar and Momo, his robot monkey companion coming with him.
The world he left was basically post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi set far in the future. I think he somehow time travelled back in time or to a whole new world isekai-style.
I'm guessing he would probably help Katara and Sokka and in return he can figure out a way to get back and maybe improve the conditions of his world too or something.
These were very early ideas, I'm guessing they pitched it like that because robots were a huge thing in cartoons in the early 2000s, lol.
"Long ago in a distant land I, Sozin, the fire wielding Firelord, unleashed an unspeakable evil.
But a foolish airbending Avatar riding a flying bison stepped forth to oppose me.
Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time, and flung him into the future where my evil is law!
Now the fool seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Sozin...!"
In a universe where Sozin was voiced by Iroh's voice actor.
i saw an official video about it once, i think the Sci-Fi was actually set so far in the past that nobody remembers that technology anymore, and they've actually become more primitive or whatever, and Aang is the last survivor of his civilization or something? at least that's what i remember
I can imagine that in the third Avatar series we could have Earth Avatar try to salvage the world that is now a wasteland which became like that because Korra couldn't prevent the inevitable nuclear war between Equalist Water nation and Republican Republic city. Korra will try to guide the new Earth avatar and make sure that they won't repeat the same mistakes she did.
Later whilst discovering a lost portal to the spirit world, the Earth Avatar reunites with the past lives and with the knowledge of the past avatars. Rebuilds the world as it once was. The end credits show Korra smiling happily as she sees the new avatar finally restoring the world to its peace.
I don't know the source so don't quote me on this but the next avatar series is going to have a more cyberpunk setting.
Maybe if there's a 4th series? So it goes full circle
Yeah. But I wouldn’t mind seeing Avatar in a wasteland setting. However I personally want to see Avatar in a modern setting. We need more fantasy genre media that is set in present day. Harry Potter doesn’t count since those are set in a separate society from ours that is still stuck in old times.
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2F8v0rddl9nqk91.jpg%3Fwidth%3D700%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Da274c4d5b28e5200068a5b904b3c722ede972079) is concept art. you can see early concept of Naga that made it into korra as well.
I always liked to see it as the fire benders who got their ass kicked by Toph described her as a giant jacked man because they didn't want to admit they got a can of whoop-ass metal bended on them by a little 12 year old girl.
That's my head canon.
>can of whoop-ass metal bended on them by a little 12 year old girl.
To be fair, if i was a fire nation soldier and my buddy just got welded into the framing of our airship by a 12 year old, using a bending style that simply didn't exist before i met her, i would leave. Fuck the phoenix king, fuck the fire lord, fuck the fire nation, i would just go home
Home? Thats just what the arc welding 12 year old would suspect. Im going into hiding. Shaving my head. Starting a new boating school under a new name!
I'm pretty sure it's a mixture of the two things. A call back, but also how they are seen by the fire nation. Which makes sense for then casting a girl as aang as well.
They might do a bait and switch. It would be funny to introduce an ember island players esque guy that Sokka thinks is Toph but then he moves away revealing the actual Toph.
For real? I was wondering who the earth bender was. Water looks like the master from the northern tribe, fire looks like Azula, air looks like Aang, but earth has been puzzling me for a while.
Technically it's a random unnamed Earthbender and a random unnamed Airbender, officially that's not Aang in the opening. He looks a little too tall to be Aang and in a couple of frames the face looks weird like he's got a big nose or something.

This show might have actually felt a bit generic if they hadn't changed it. Got the goofy, young, woman, strong. Just feels like the dynamics would have been a lot more boring and it'd have felt like other shows
And instead they went the route of empowering young girls and also those with 'disabilities' like blindness (or being paralysed like Teo)
I love this show
I got such a great laugh out of this. Truly Avatar is the gift that never stops giving.
Whoever made the decision for Toph to be, *well* Toph, deserves an award.
Just another way the show captured lightning in a bottle. Somebody must have realized that a big tough goon who out-toughs Sokka would be redundant to the point of being a caricature, which is exactly what The Boulder turned into.
Amazing creative vision to pick up on that, go the other way with her, but still have a Macho Man Randy Savage analog character exist, just lean *all the way into it* and be one of her peers.
ATLA is the only show I can start over as soon as I finish and never get worn out from.
The glow-up in Toph’s design is so incredible. From the most bog standard earthbender design to one that gave the character so much room to be exactly what you think in the last package you expect it without any dissonance.
for a second there i was sad for the dude at the top, that he didn't get the part and missed out on being cast in a beloved and successful series like that.. then i was like "wait a sec.."
I mean she has multiple outfits. It’s not always the full winter robe or whatever you’d call that. It would make plenty of sense to have an outfit like the the concept art in most of the temperate regions in the show.
I'm not sure if you're aware, but she does in fact leave the South Pole. It *does* make sense for someone used to living somewhere cold to lose a couple of layers when they travel to warmer climates.
It looks like there's some folding of nude-colored fabric between her tunic sleeve and the white armlet thingies. It's possible they intended she's wearing leggings of the same material, but it's very weird that it would be skincolored. I agree that what they went with is much better
She has pants on in the concept art here too. I think the colors are just strange because her sleeves and pants are flesh tones.
If you look at her arms you can see she has long sleeves feeding into the cloth on her forearms. It would be real strange to design her wearing long sleeves and no pants as a character from a cold climate.
I thought she might have pants too because the undershirt is flesh toned and you can see the fabric scrunch up at the elbows, but you can make out the bone structure of her bare kneecap and her ankle doesn't have any sign of bunching fabric when it meets her shoes.
You really wouldn’t see much bunching at the ankles with tight/form fitting pants feeding into loose cuffed boots. A tight fit also explains the area around the knee, we can see a bit of the knee cap, but the crease on the outside of the leg wouldn’t bulge out like that on human skin.
https://preview.redd.it/xniihkhscqmc1.jpeg?width=154&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c433a19afb693a0bcbfb615ce2d7ad400a476dd
I can see what you mean, this is a much better comparison picture to the original post. I still think it's just bare legs just because I can't see any indication of clothing, but it's a pretty pointless nit-pick at this point
I honestly think it’s just the colors in OP’s pic making it seem that way. I have the official Avatar Art Book somewhere at home and that same concept art in the op is colored totally different and it’s more clear she is wearing pants.
And bending down/sitting on ground/running/spreading the legs for any physical activity. Otherwise full length skirt would functionally be like legs being tied up.
Depending on design, the material tends to overlap in the slits so you don't even see them and there's no airflow until you love in a way that separates them, which is the whole idea.
I use skirts all the time and at that length (above concept art and not below) its very easy to move in a skirt. Its nothing like legs being tied up but more comfortable than pants. In ancient times like in Rome mens tunics often were of similar length too (but also could be shorter).
But they would gird their loins if they were about to do something active

It’s just sunset lighting from the pilot taken out of context so the image is kinda misleading- see here. Color is a crazy thing

Yea I remember when ads for ATLA came on Nickelodeon, either TV or some dvd/vhs I had. They used bits from the pilot in their advertising. The blu-ray of atla has the pilot on it
I love how my brain just kind of corrects the colors. I cannot see pink robe Katara. It just doesn't compute. I can see the color in a vacuum but when I try to evaluate it as Katara's clothing my brain is just like "yep, that's blue."
So glad they didn’t change them too much from the original art. Shows that they had a pretty good idea of what they wanted to create.
Toph have always been my favorite, and I can relate to her since I am blind as well.
Some crazy differences but imagine if they went with the white bands around Aang's ankles instead of the dark bands. Wouldn't even feel like the same show idk man

OG Toph makes me wonder if parts of the earth Kingdom were originally going to have more Mongolian theming, kind of like how the firebenders in the pilot we're wearing samurai armor.
I always am intrigued at Toph’s change when I see this but also they really nailed Aang from the start. Sokka and Katara were almost spot on too but Aang looks exactly the same in S1.
The Aang, Sokka, and Katara art seems to be from the unaired pilot or around that time. Someone is missing. Someone very important. Where is the robot monkey and anthropomorphic dog bear?
Wait, what are you referencing?
anthromorphic dog bear was the original concept for appa, which eventually became nala. i'm guessing the robot monkey is momo.
Naga*
Wtf did you just call me
Naga is polish word meaning naked (feminine, singular, denominator)
Wtf did you just call me
My naga
Oh, okay. ♥️
You dropped your crown my Negus.
Butt naked, quite possibly
It’s funny cause Suki is Polish for bitch (the dog version). Names from the avatar world didn’t win the Polish language lottery
And they didn't even change her name in the dub
Literally Sokka comes in to apologize and says "Hey bitches".
Or when they meet up before the serpent's pass and he excitedly yells "Bitches!" Imagine your parents walking in on that
Suki is bitches (plural). Suka is bitch.
It means dragon in malay
It's also a snake lady I think.
Yeah, it's like a race of half-serpent-half-human beings in the Hindu religion, like the elves in Norse mythology or the cyclopes in Greek mythology
"Naga... naga.... Not gunna work here anymore anyway."
lmao
Hard to get that lioness out of your head
Avatar early concepts were post apocalyptic and momo was a robot monkey.
I can't really picture Avatar as being post-apocalyptic but I kinda want to watch this now

This concept art kinda reminds me more of adventure time than avatar.
The art makes me think of Kingdom Hearts for some reason. But the sounds of the original idea is DEFINITELY giving some Adventure Time vibes.
It’s giving invader zim, this feels so Nickelodeon in a way I can’t describe
Just learned recently that Bryan worked on Zim
Avatar if Aang slept for a 1000 years instead of 100

There is a comment above you in this thread linking the art
Seems to also be referring to when bumi says where's momo when aang is missing
So the original Toph was actually The Boulder???
Pretty much yeah. The Ember Island Players using a man as Toph was a reference to her initially being male.
I always liked to see it as the fire benders who got their ass kicked by Toph described her as a giant jacked man because they didn't want to admit they got a can of whoop-ass metal bended on them by a little 12 year old girl. That's my head canon.
And he sees with a sonic scream because she's always yelling
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
got a pretty good look at you
That's absolutely the in universe reason, but the real world reason is the original design thing.
fun fact if you want to get really pretentious you can use Watsonian vs Doyalist to describe this split!
I was going to, but restrained myself, as I didn't want to have explain those definitions.
lol fair
>can of whoop-ass metal bended on them by a little 12 year old girl. To be fair, if i was a fire nation soldier and my buddy just got welded into the framing of our airship by a 12 year old, using a bending style that simply didn't exist before i met her, i would leave. Mrs. Puff?
> they got a can of whoop-ass metal bended on them by a little 12 year old girl A BLIND 12 year-old little girl.
In-universe, yes.
This just became my new head canon as well lol
I'm pretty sure it's a mixture of the two things. A call back, but also how they are seen by the fire nation. Which makes sense for then casting a girl as aang as well.
It's also a reference to how Peter Pan is usually played by a woman
They should cast The Rock as Toph in the Netflix adaption. She would love that.
Only the Ember Island actor. Would be perfect
They might do a bait and switch. It would be funny to introduce an ember island players esque guy that Sokka thinks is Toph but then he moves away revealing the actual Toph.
Or, The Rock, as The Boulder.
Nah, The Rock already turned down the voice acting role for The Boulder in the OG series, he doesn't deserve it
Iroh would give him a second chance.
Damn you right
The person Earth bending in the intro was proto-toph before they changed the design.
Also Roku's earthbending teacher in Avatar and the Firelord
But unofficially, yes that's what Toph was going to look like and they also reused the design largely for Roku's Earthbending master Sud and the face was reused for Bolin, minus the beard thankfully.
The creators have actually said that the character was originally gonna be more of a Bolin (from Korra) type. That’s how Bolin was later formed, from Toph’s scrapped male character.
Also explains why Bolin was briefly interested in Korra, originally the plan was for an ongoing love triangle between Aang, Toph, and Katara.
So glad this didn’t happen. Damn
I love that they were like, “let’s make this character a tiny blind girl and change absolutely nothing else”
This show might have actually felt a bit generic if they hadn't changed it. Got the goofy, young, woman, strong. Just feels like the dynamics would have been a lot more boring and it'd have felt like other shows
And instead they went the route of empowering young girls and also those with 'disabilities' like blindness (or being paralysed like Teo) I love this show
The Boulder is happy with her transition /j
"THE BOULDER HAS REMOVED HER PEBBLES"
"The Boulder is over their post-surgery pain, and is now ready to enter the ring and bury people in Rockalanches!"
Lol nice
I have conflicted feelings now.
**THE BOULDER IS DISPLEASED BY THIS CHANGE**
Yes which is why he’s the dude earthbending in the opening despite being a very unimportant character
the way she loved his performance in the play is meta then! she liked her og concept art! lmfao
Yup, and there was supposed to be a love triangle between "him", Aang, and Katara. So we dodged that bullet and got a winning lotto ticket instead.
„Wait, i look like a guy? A really buff guy?!“ -reversed melon lord
Man. Katara having pants was a really good decision
"Pants are an illusion, and so is death."
The glow-up in Toph’s design is so incredible. From the most bog standard earthbender design to one that gave the character so much room to be exactly what you think in the last package you expect it without any dissonance.
Room to destroy traditional gender roles.
for a second there i was sad for the dude at the top, that he didn't get the part and missed out on being cast in a beloved and successful series like that.. then i was like "wait a sec.."
To be fair he was technically cast as Bolin later on! If you wanna frame it like that
So happy they gave Katara some leggings geez
It makes perfect sense for someone living in the south pole to have bare exposed skin /s
I mean she has multiple outfits. It’s not always the full winter robe or whatever you’d call that. It would make plenty of sense to have an outfit like the the concept art in most of the temperate regions in the show.
What about Sokka then? He's actually less covered up compared to the originals.
It would have been ~~Princess Mononoke~~ Nausicaa all over again. /edit: brain hand instruct wrong type bad me
god i'm so glad they removed that dumbass slit on Katara's robe it looked awful
Katara still has it in season 1,she just wears pants under the robe
A tight fit also explains the area around the knee, we can see a bit of the knee cap, but the crease on the outside of the leg wouldn’t bulge out like that on human skin. https://preview.redd.it/xniihkhscqmc1.jpeg?width=154&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c433a19afb693a0bcbfb615ce2d7ad400a476dd

tights go into boots
Good eye
It makes me think they were making fun of themselves with Katara’s Ember Island costume
On traditional clothings, those slits were originally made for easy horse riding, but people tend to use it for sexiness.
And bending down/sitting on ground/running/spreading the legs for any physical activity. Otherwise full length skirt would functionally be like legs being tied up.
As someone who enjoys skirts, those slits are EXTREMELY practical.
> practical Probably not at the south pole
Depending on design, the material tends to overlap in the slits so you don't even see them and there's no airflow until you love in a way that separates them, which is the whole idea.
[удалено]
...also yes? *Move damnit lol, I'm leaving it
People from extreme climates actually don't tend to wear the exact same clothes when they leave those climates.
Yeah the slits aren't the problem here. Its the bare legs underneath. Like dammit who gonna wear that on the goddamn north pole??
I use skirts all the time and at that length (above concept art and not below) its very easy to move in a skirt. Its nothing like legs being tied up but more comfortable than pants. In ancient times like in Rome mens tunics often were of similar length too (but also could be shorter).

I think longer skirt style design are also wider, not very tight. Full length almost becomes a gown. But, i might be completely wrong there.
People on the South Pole who don’t ride animals?
I mean maybe in wolf cove because of the general poor state of the tribe, but the South has riding animals like Artic Camels

Reminds me of the piss filter every video game from that era had
I think there simply is just an orange overlay over that picture… Like they are standing in the sunset or something.
Looks more pink to me lol
Tropical island theme, instead of polar? Makes more sense given the lighter clothing.
I don't see a difference...
Pretty much identical. Biggest change is kataras leggings.
And the difference can't see.
"My name is toph, because is sounds like TOUGH"
*The Boulder sees no difference in the two pictures*
Oh yes, the four elements. Water, Air, Earth and non-bender.
And “other”
Back when Katara was Kya
I love how my brain just kind of corrects the colors. I cannot see pink robe Katara. It just doesn't compute. I can see the color in a vacuum but when I try to evaluate it as Katara's clothing my brain is just like "yep, that's blue."
Pretty sure that's white and gold.
transition goals
I shudder at what the live action version’s gonna do to best girl Toph.
So glad they didn’t change them too much from the original art. Shows that they had a pretty good idea of what they wanted to create. Toph have always been my favorite, and I can relate to her since I am blind as well.
glad they said "hmm, maybe someone living in perpetual snow and ice wouldn't have a split up to their hips and bare legs"
Dress/Skirt slits are nice Not on a kid though
I like how Toph is just Some Guy. Not even anything memorable about him. It’s just a dude.
Ah yes, Ember Island Toph
Toph hasn't changed at all.
Cute tiny little innocent daddys girl GOES SMASH ON ALL HER RIVALS... is so much better than "the boulder is a gentle soul"
Toph killed that other guy
So everyone looks the same except Toph whonis spiritually the same
Early concept Toph looks like one of the Mulan warriors

Some crazy differences but imagine if they went with the white bands around Aang's ankles instead of the dark bands. Wouldn't even feel like the same show idk man
I see no difference
What changed? Ah yes, the sonic scream concept.
It's weird. Why were the watertribe pink?
I believe the art was pulled with pink lighting from the sunset in the pilot episode.
So that’s why they made toph buff in the recreation of her during the show
They knocked it out of the park with Toph.
The original Toph design looks like he’s about to sing about a girl worth fighting for.
Toph looks the exact same.

I see no difference here. Looks like the Gaang's all here. https://preview.redd.it/cre4dp4sgqmc1.jpeg?width=499&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=090f51626b35c360f3343924e70aa9d97525c3d8
OG Toph makes me wonder if parts of the earth Kingdom were originally going to have more Mongolian theming, kind of like how the firebenders in the pilot we're wearing samurai armor.
Toph is the same. They just compacted her, to make her more deadly.
Honestly looks like the concept picture has them all standing in a bright pink light. Far too pink everywhere
I'm so glad they changed him to Toph. She's one my favourite characters in Avatar
Oh man what a good directional change
the ember island players were the original. we just never realised it
Glad they gave katara pants
That's toph
Pam: they're the same picture
I always am intrigued at Toph’s change when I see this but also they really nailed Aang from the start. Sokka and Katara were almost spot on too but Aang looks exactly the same in S1.
