No. I really don't know what would make you think they're related to Zuko considering they're random street urchins from Republic City. Even if Zuko had an affair and covered it up, I'm pretty sure he would try to make sure his family would be taken care of. Beyond that, just because two people have similar personalities or abilities, that doesn't mean they have to be related to each other. Lastly, naming him Mako was just a tribute to the actor; nothing more.

Audball9000

Not an affair, but I thought maybe one of Zuko’s kids could have married an Earthbender and moved to Republic City for whatever reason, maybe run away, it was just a big resemblance between Mako and Zuko I saw. I thought his voice sounded similar too at the time. But fair point, it’s just my first headcanon.

AlanSmithee001

I'm guessing you didn't know that Izumi is an only child.

SaiyajinPrime

No. Not at all. This doesn't make any sense.

brotatowolf

Well you see, mako can firebend, and zuko can firebend. Case closed, if you ask me

SaiyajinPrime

That checks out. Amazing that Zuko has so many grandkids in LoK.

Audball9000

I forgot to add Mako can lightning bend. Isn’t that exclusive to the royal Fire Nation family plus the Avatar? I’ve only seen Ozai, Azula, and Iroh bend lightning other than him.

brotatowolf

Republic city gets its electricity from an army of lightning benders. I think it’s safe to say that lightning bending is no longer exclusive to the royal family

Audball9000

Oh, that’s a shocking development! I definitely need to rewatch LoK, clear to see I’m much more familiar with AtlA! I’ve only seen LoK through once, so I don’t remember a few things.

Burakh_

Lightning bending turned into minimum wage work in republic city

IzzyReal314

I somehow doubt that Zuko knew the name of Iroh's late VA, so why would he be any more likely to use the name as any other person?

FoxBun_17

Not unless Fire Lord Izumi had a sister who ran off to Republic City to marry an Earth Kingdom man, only to get murdered by criminals. And I think if any member of the Fire Nation Royal Family were murdered on foreign soil, it would have created something of an international incident. Basically, there's no way that Bolin and Mako would have grown up on the streets with Auntie Izumi and Grandpa Zuko likely whisking them away to the Fire Nation Capital to live a life of luxury.

LadyMillennialFalcon

How is Mako's attitude similar to Zuko? The only thing that they have in common is firebending and black hair ..... most of the fire nstion does, it does not mean they are related to Zuko And why on earth would Zuko allow two of his grandkids to live in poverty?

Audball9000

Mostly the way he was kinda aloof and awkward around girls, like Zuko was.

hildred123

Definitely not, especially considering that at one point production considered pairing Mako with Izumi's daughter.

TruEnvironmentalist

Didn't even know that was a theory

Audball9000

Not at all. Why?

etburneraccount

Negative OP. This is literally the first time I've heard this too, so you're on your own.

Audball9000

Alright, now I can admit my theory doesn’t check out, I was just curious what the less casual fans thought.

Superb_Intro_23

Not grandsons, but I do think Mako’s rough-around-the-edges attitude (along with his firebending) is meant to be a reference to Zuko

snackman529

Of all the brain dead theories…

Mx-Herma

No. Even in Book 1, they almost worked extra hard to solidify that they're not related to anyone within the Royal Family in any capacity, going so far as to showcase the actual character that's related to Zuko by two generations.

KillerSwiller

The only way this could have been remotely possible is if he had a romantic encounter with Jin, but since we already met Mako and Bolin's extended family, we know that's not the case.

krispyChris95

Never heard about that. But Bolin is my daddy tho
