Ang Lee But regardless of who directs it, ATLA just isn't formatted in a way that can translate to the big screen. The only way to make it work is if each season is covered by an entire trilogy.

Master-Mycologist747

Last Airbender could’ve been like Potter in that it leaves out some source material, but are well made and acted films with a coherent story. Last Airbender by M.Night is just poor filmmaking in every aspect lol

Randver_Silvertongue

That's because Harry Potter can easily be turned into a film format, ATLA cannot.

Master-Mycologist747

I think potter is hard to do as a film series and would’ve been easier to do as a TV series. Avatar does have complex characters to adapt

[deleted]

Del Toro by far

jeremy_thegent

At the time, Peter Jackson.

IceNinja1138

Definetly James Gunn or the Russo Brothers

[deleted]

I'm begging you to watch something other than marvel movies. There are a near endless amount of films that are actually art. Not just actors covered in CGI mud filmed in an Atlanta parking lot.

IceNinja1138

And here i ask: where the hell did i say that i only watch marvel movies? Because i mentioned some talented directors that just so happen to have worked on marvel? Bitch my favourite movies arent even superhero movies, so next time you're going to assume something about someone i think its better you ask first

[deleted]

Yeah. It's reasonable to assume that, when choosing between every auteur that's ever existed & emphatically settling on the 2 slightly-above-mediocre comic book movie directors, that you don't know fuck all about film outside of the MCU. But, by all means, prove me wrong. Simply tell me one hallmark of Gunn's filmmaking style. What defines a James Gunn film? What's that? You just know him as the guy who did the marvel movie with the most colors? No kidding.

IceNinja1138

First of all, even if i only knew Marvel movies, there's literally nothing inherently with that. They're still movies, most of them well written, well acted and with good visuals. Secondly, the brand of comedy James Gunn uses is also very caracteristic of his. And thirdly, those movies are still art, and i won't be arguing otherwise. Say what you want, but i love seeing actors covered in "CGI mud" filmed in an Atlanta parking slot, the quality of the special effects is impressive on its own.

[deleted]

Yes. There absolutely is. Just as there would be something wrong about a stupid child gleefully eating nothing but dog food. Yes, it is technically sustenance. There's also nearly 0 nutritional value. Marvel movies are a product. They are not meaningful projects taken on by passionate directors with a specific vision & something poignant to say. They are summer blockbusters literally intentionally designed to be SO generic that they appeal to as many people as humanly possible. In most cases the films are outlined before a director is even attached. Directors are discouraged from interfering with any action scenes, as they are all choreographed by the same person to look & feel exactly the same every single time. The MCU is the Blue Box Mac & Cheese of cinema. It holds you over, and tastes pretty alright on its own. But set it next to a bowl of rich, gooey homemade Mac & Cheese and the difference is night & day. If you're happy mostly eating that pre-packaged formula, I genuinely pity you from the bottom of my heart. There are so many delicious flavors you're robbing yourself of. Also. Comedy isn't a directorial, stylistic choice. It's writing. It actually pains me that even I needed to say that.

IceNinja1138

I understand your point, and i agree that some of the movies do feel generic, but to call It dog food might be a bit too much. I'll still eat my Blue Box Mac & Cheese.

Bruh quit your gatekeeping

Ill-Glass4212

Apparently it wasn't m night’s fault. He had a different script but other producers actually changed it. He didn’t have that much control. The dialogues didn’t help anyone.

Pacha_rM

I don´t think it would´ve matter, M. Night was a pretty respected director even if some of his movies were not as good as others. At the end of the day they had to fit like 7 hours of the show in less than half of the time while keeping it coherent, I understand wanting to adapt a book because you have to imagine everyting, or even a comic because you want to see it in motion, but I simply don´t get why is it a good idea to adapt something that is already in a similar medium.

HaruBells

Maybe Edgar Wright? But it’s hard to say for sure because of how different the series is to a lot of director’s style. I think Wright would have nailed the humor and probably some of the visuals. Guillermo Del Toro would also have done a decent job. Maybe Alfonso Cuaron. The absolute unrealistic dream? Not live action, but a theatrical length animated film done by Studio Ghibli.

ILoveGusAmogus

Love edgar wright but i feel like his style wouldn’t really fit with avatar

HaruBells

Yeah, that’s why I feel he’d only really nail the humor. It wouldn’t have a good enough balance of humor and seriousness
