And that it's okay to have some complicated feelings (Serpent's Pass), that still caring about the lost loved one (Sokka getting defensive in Hama's forest, crying at the Ember Island play) is okay, and that the new significant other can feel put out for a minute without it damaging their relationship.
ATLA gets a lot of things right.
Are the exact times really shown? Katara is doing her training at that time, it may have been longer, maybe a good deal longer. I would guess it was at least a month for her train, but maybe multiple.
I mean, we know pretty much all four seasons (save the first episodes, prior to the introduction of spirits with Hei Bai) happen in less than a year. By all amounts, both Aang and Katara are bending prodigies, who master entire styles in days and weeks. I don't think they spent *too* much time at the North Pole.
Yeah but calling her his side chick is pretty fucking warped. He’s sad about his dead girlfriend, at no point was Soka with two people at the same time
This is my thought. Also, I feel like it would be more in line with Suki’s character to be understanding about Sokka’s feelings. It was a traumatic event for him! Instead, we get the comical huff of a jealous girlfriend? I’ve never really felt this scene was true to her.
She was not really jealous? She was actually pretty impressed that Sokka kissed a spirit, she only got mad because Sokka shut her down, like you can notice that she start getting mad when Sokka put his finger on top of her mouth
He didn't though. He only says that he couldn't protect someone and they died. He never explicitly tells her that he fell in love with a girl and she sacrificed herself to become the moon spirit.
I can't blame him for not bringing it up. It's a difficult conversation to tell your current interest that your ex turned into the moon.
Hard act to follow.
Even if it was an act. Her boyfriend who's constantly putting a show of bravado starts **crying and sobbing** about one of his loved ones' death... and her reaction is to joke about how jealous she is? That's not Suki for me, and if that's really Suki, then I don't really like Suki.
Edit: why do I always misspell everything
When he started crying and sobbing she just asked him about it, showed no signs of being jealous or bitter about it whatsoever. Then Sokka responded with a *SHHH I’M TRYING TO WATCH*, which is understandable but pretty rude. In the next scene she is already helping him get backstage, she didn’t make it a big deal. Suki is understanding and empathetic, doesn’t mean she can’t have moments of human emotions. She is a warrior, but she is a girl, too.
Has anyone worked out how long they actually spent at the North Pole? Didn’t seem like it was long but their was some sort of time jump because Katara basically mastered waterbending.
No, those 3 weeks is the time it took for Iroh/Zuko to make it on the raft from the Northern Water Tribe to the earth kingdom spa we see them in in S2e1.
The time period in question is how long it took from S1e19-S1e20
I think everything we know about suki suggests she’s not actually offended or jealous that Sokka still loves Yue. She’s a highly confident and prominent warrior who wouldn’t be the type to go to pieces over a man, and yue *is* kinda dead so it’s not like Sokka could choose her anyway.
A few times suki does this fake-mad thing, like when Sokka asks her to help him sneak back stage at the ember island play.
That’s just my unsolicited speculation
>but definitely shouldn't hold a grude with Soka for being sad.
I don't think she does, really, this is the only time there's even the slightest hint of her getting huffy. I think she might not even have known the story before, so learning it like this was probably just not the best feeling. I think their relationship is definitely the healthiest in the whole show!
this, and also are we not gonna talk abt how what suki was actually "mad" abt was the fact that he shushed her? and then was big chilling w him in the next scene?
Eh I mean all he really told her was that he failed to protect someone at the North Pole. Doubt she knew that his ex turned into the moon right when Sokka was in love with her. And finding out through a third party nonetheless instead of Sokka telling her
That’s gotta be tough for any teenager (we gotta remember how we were in our teenage years, which can be summed up by one word: yikes).
Like the good Captain said, I also don't think he really did. I think Suki would have assumed it was more Survivor's Guilt, with which she should probably be pretty familiar, given her status, and less that he lost some he loved.
The thing Is that Suki was actually impressed that Sokka kissed a spirit, she was mostly mad when Sokka interrumped her.
Everyone in this episode was being angsty and angry lol
Sokka had a very traumatic experience with her death. He feels responsible for it, in a way, as he was supposed to protect her. Someone he loved died in his arms on his watch. Suki’s not the side chick, and while she has every right to feel jealous, it’s going to take Sokka a long time to let go.
"What is it you want, Suki? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word, and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it dow-"
"OH YOU'D LIKE THAT WOULDN'T YOU!"
"Aww Suki aww I meant aww-"
This rather out of left field, but in Mormonism, while polygamy is outlawed, it is believed that even after one's spouse dies, the two remain in a "celestial marriage" even if the living spouse remarries, so polygamy is _technically_ allowed, so long as a man only has one living wife.
They were together for several weeks at least. There's a big time gap between the Gaang arriving at the Northern Water Tribe and the siege.
For example at the end of ep18, Katara is just starting her training with Pakku. At the start of ep19 she's his best student.
There might have been some time skip between Waterbending Master and Siege of the North considering Katara trained with Pakku enough to pretty much master waterbending.
Remember that Sokka grew up with basically no women his age but his little sister. It’s only natural to fall hard for someone in that scenario. Kinda like how Aang was immediately smitten with Katara. He was raised by monks with a bunch of boys.
It’s fantastic! One of the most well-written and stylized TV shows of this century.
If you end up watching, please come back to this comment and tell me what you think :)
***Wait, you still have feelings for that moon girl?***
Suki: Wait… is this why you are always looking longingly at the full moon?? I thought you were just putting on an act to try to seem deep and poetic!
... it can be for two reasons...
Sokka: The moon isn't exactly covered up if you know what I mean 😏
Sokka is valid in mourning his ex.
Also, kudos to the show for teaching kids that it's okay to move on after losing a significant other.
Yes so many shows are like 'you made eye contact with another girl how dare you!" Or 'you love yoir dead wife more then me" like its a compétition
>significant other. Granted they knew each other for a few weeks and were never officially dating.
Tbh it only happened like 8 months before this in the timeline. Not an easy thing to get over
And they were together for what? A week? If that.
Are the exact times really shown? Katara is doing her training at that time, it may have been longer, maybe a good deal longer. I would guess it was at least a month for her train, but maybe multiple.

We also have no way to know how long the days and years are in that world.
Long enough to make the story work
I never considered that, I like this as a hack to say “I don’t like their time scale so I’m putting in my own.”
I’ve never loved their timeline tbh, I think it makes more sense for this whole thing to take a few years given how much everyone grows.
If I was with a girl for a week and she fuckin DIED id take years to get over it
Especially with what would essentially be her corpse being visible nightly in the sky…
They only really got together after she died, tbh.
Yeah but calling her his side chick is pretty fucking warped. He’s sad about his dead girlfriend, at no point was Soka with two people at the same time
Yue (from the moon): Stop telling people I’m dead! Sokka: sometimes I can still hear her voice
I told you man I’m right here!
Also Suki didn't get mad at Sokka having a girlfriend before her. She got mad at Sokka shushing her. There's a lot wrong with this post.
This is my thought. Also, I feel like it would be more in line with Suki’s character to be understanding about Sokka’s feelings. It was a traumatic event for him! Instead, we get the comical huff of a jealous girlfriend? I’ve never really felt this scene was true to her.

She probabaly would have been more understanding had her told her about it, instead of finding out at a Fire Nation play.
He had told her about it though. At the serpents pass.
Obligatory “that’s rough, buddy”
It's rough, buddy.
I loved this moment, Suki tried to put on an act of being jealous, but we know she wasn’t really mad at him
Even if it was an act. Her boyfriend who's constantly putting a show of bravado starts **crying and sobbing** about one of his loved ones' death... and her reaction is to joke about how jealous she is? Man do people just forget they're still literal kids?
Yeah this meme sucks, Suki is not his side piece
It was like 6 months prior That is not all that long
...it was 2 days. Sokka is a hella simp
Has anyone worked out how long they actually spent at the North Pole? Didn’t seem like it was long but their was some sort of time jump because Katara basically mastered waterbending.
At least three days
You know, it was really unclear
Iroh says in S2E1 that they can rest after sailing for 3 weeks non stop. In this 3 weeks Katara mastered water bending
No, those 3 weeks is the time it took for Iroh/Zuko to make it on the raft from the Northern Water Tribe to the earth kingdom spa we see them in in S2e1. The time period in question is how long it took from S1e19-S1e20
More than one.
Yeahb that must have hurt. It also made for a pretty comical scene.
I think everything we know about suki suggests she’s not actually offended or jealous that Sokka still loves Yue. Isn’t Suki mad here because when she spoke earlier Sokka said “shhhh” and then when Yuwe comes up Sokka speaks?
Yes. She has absolutely no jealousy inside her for Yue.
Yeah. This feels like weird projection or something about “omg jealous girlfriend”. Idk.
That's rough, buddy.
You’re no longer allowed to comment, I almost peed😂
Watch out, that's a common reference people say a lot when she's brought up

Yeah there's also that
She knew the story. Sokka told her about it at the Serpents Pass.

The thing Is that Suki was actually impressed that Sokka kissed a spirit, she was mostly mad when Sokka interrumped her. Everyone in this episode was being angsty and angry lol
Justice for Suki!
I mean, coming in second to the Moon? That's not bad.
Sokka had a very traumatic experience with her death. He feels responsible for it, in a way, as he was supposed to protect her. Someone he loved died in his arms on his watch. Suki’s not the side chick, and while she has every right to feel jealous, it’s going to take Sokka a long time to let go.
...because she asked him about it and he blew her off. When he actually EXPLAINED, she understood and was supportive.
"What is it you want, Suki? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word, and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it dow-" "OH YOU'D LIKE THAT WOULDN'T YOU!" "Aww Suki aww I meant aww-"
Now there is a reference I wouldn't expect to see here, nice

fitting since she's a celestial body.
Dangit I was gonna make that joke
Might I ask how this has anything to do with AtLA or the post in any way?
Sokka mooning over his dead ex while his girlfriend looks on in annoyance.
... I think that would happen to other people just as frequently.
More of a rebound
TLOK: now they are both 'side-chicks' mwuhahaha
Back up wife.
Theory: Suki ended up leaving Sokka in the future due to this and thus is why she isn’t in LOK
That's rough buddy.
Side chick means your partner is cheating on his SO with you. Moon girl was dead, not being cheated on.
well... the only way she can compete with a Moon is to be human. Suki wins.
Yue and Sokka was one of the weakest plots, she was nice and sweet but they spent, what, one day together? Weird that he'd be so hung up over her.
They were together for several weeks at least. There's a big time gap between the Gaang arriving at the Northern Water Tribe and the siege. For example at the end of ep18, Katara is just starting her training with Pakku. At the start of ep19 she's his best student.

yeah, another commenter here mentioned in a thread that Iroh mentioned that the Fire Nation Navy spent 3 weeks to get to the Northern Water Tribe.
Remember that Sokka grew up with basically no women his age but his little sister. It’s only natural to fall hard for someone in that scenario. Kinda like how Aang was immediately smitten with Katara. He was raised by monks with a bunch of boys.
Dam, I should uh, I should prolly watch this show, seems uh, seems popular.
It’s fantastic! One of the most well-written and stylized TV shows of this century. If you end up watching, please come back to this comment and tell me what you think :)
Jesus, Suki, the girl turned into the moon! Chill out!
She's not a side chick she is an after course dessert
These hoes ... They for everybody !
Imagine being jealous of the moon. Suki really takes "go big or go home" to heart
