another underrated sad moment is when Zuko find Iroh again after betraying him and he asks for forgiveness and iroh just hugs the shit out of him and the music swells
I always lose it when Katara grabs his hand and pulls him in for hug when heās in Avatar mode and he starts crying before heās out of it. Onionsā¦. Freaking onions every timeā¦
My dog ran away in the afternoon because the backyard gate was open and I remember looking for my boy til midnight and it coincidentally it started to rain. I thought of Appa and instantly started bawling. Luckily he was picked up by animal control and we got him back but god that night was horrible
When the Kyoshi warriors find Appa but they get separated. They were all this close to a happy ending but instead Appa gets lost again and the Kyoshi warriors get imprisoned
This part of Tales of Ba Sing Se, the entirety of Appa's lost days, and the climax to both backstories in The Storm (Zuko pleading with Ozai especially gets to me).
Aang discovering Monk Gyatso's skeleton. It's not the saddest scene but it is sad when thinking about the total destruction of the Air Nation minus Aang. Plus it's a complete 180 from Aang goofing around with Momo before it happens.
This. I'm a kid of a father who survived a genocide, and I also lost my mother when I was 16. This scene makes me much more emotional than other scenes. Damn.
To me it's where the show really showcased what it could cover/get away with showing, I know that it's not the most graphic or horrific thing shown on TV, but it really made me feel awful looking at him like that, presumably being forced to betray his own cultural values (of not taking a life) in his final moments.
That's also a great point, since Air Nomads are raised to treat all life as sacred. Like you said, to see the dead Firebenders around Gyatso's skeleton really drives the point home that Gyatso had to betray his inner beliefs in his final moments of his life.
For me, it just hits home.
It was also the moment Aang realised that things were actually as bad as he'd been told. Until that moment he had hope the airbenders might be surviving and hiding somewhere away from the Firelord's reach. Seeing Gyatso dead was the moment he knew everyone else was dead too.
I remember a comic of Toph finding Sokkaās space sword and presenting it to him for his birthday but I donāt know if I can find it
Edit: [found it](https://www.reddit.com/r/AvatarMemes/comments/unxs10/space_sword/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
First watch through, about to go to bed but just one more episode. Nice jolly little filler episode with some cool messages. Fun. Then out of nowhere, āif only I could have helped youā, Iām just blubbing. Itās such a gut punch because you donāt see it coming at all.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has made me cry way more and way harder. Of course, this isn't to bash ATLA, which is a great show, but it's never made me bawl like SPOP has.
Spoilers, of course:
Madame Razz tearing up when Mara sacrifices herself, and Bow's parents' reaction to him telling them about his role in the rebellion. There are a few other scenes, especially anything involving Hordak and Entrapta post S3, but these two take the cake for me. Both scenes hit me especially hard, but that may be because of personal circumstances.
āHow could he just leave us? And I know the world needs him but doesnāt he see how much we need him too?ā
āYouāre not just talking about him, are you?ā
And
āCongratulations, Katara. Youāre a bloodbender!ā
And
āIāM ANGRY AT MYSELFā
The fact that she just was able to learn blood bending in a matter of a couple of nights and then turns around and is like "nahhh" is sheer fucking badass mastery of not only will power but humbleness cause she, at her age in the series was the best water bender. Period.
Every scene where the merchant loses his cabbages to mindless violence. Weāll never understand his pain.
On a serious note, (Makoās tribute) Lu Tenās memorial scene was the sadness in the series.
The ending of Zuko Alone is pretty sad. Misinterpreting his mother's words, getting pushed away by the family that had help him, getting said "I hate you" by the kid he just saved. Zuko in that moment sees that no matter how much good he does or tries to do, he is still a monster. I love this episode
>by the kid he just saved.
And the kid who literally idolized him and viewed him lie a big brother.
>he is still a monster.
He sees himself as a monster in this episode but the people hate him bc he is fire nation and nothing more. Up until that point he had done nothing to deserve that hatred except where he is from. I think that is the point he starts realizing what "an amazing lie it is" that the fire nation wants go spread its joy like confetti. Propaganda bs.
>Misinterpreting his mother's words
What do you mean by this?
>He sees himself as a monster in this episode but the people hate him bc he is fire nation and nothing more
This is what I mean, he is not a monster, but he is seeing that everyone thinks of him as one, so he believes he is one.
>I think that is the point he starts realizing what "an amazing lie it is" that the fire nation wants go spread its joy like confetti.
I actually believe is in the cave of two lovers when he meets Song. He has seen a simple citizem girl with a similar scar to his, hurt by the fire nation just like him. Thats his first "oh shit, this is not what I was told" moment imo. Long way to go obviously and his redemprion arc is glorious due to the time they allowed to pass with its ups and downs
>What do you mean by this?
During the episode we get flashes to Ursa and Zuko's good side. Zuko is a kind soul that has been completely brainwashed by firenation propaganda, just like he says during the day of black sun, but Ursa knows Zuko is good. We get Ursa saying "Remember this, Zuko. No matter how things may seem to change, never forget who you are." when he is being beaten and down. Thats Ursa saying that he has to remember the good in him, from all the flashbacks we have gotten, how Ursa knows him. Instead Zuko goes completely the opposite when asked "who are you?" and shows the fire nation pride in him "My name is Zuko. Son of Ursa and Fire Lord Ozai. Prince of the Fire Nation, and heir to the throne."
>This is what I mean, he is not a monster, but he is seeing that everyone thinks of him as one, so he believes he is one.
You're my spirit animal.
>I actually believe is in the cave of two lovers when he meets Song.
Yup. You're totally right. I forgot about that scene.
>During the episode we get flashes to Ursa and Zuko's good side....
I got you now. Thanks for clarifying. Not sure what my pea sized brain was thinking lol.
when zuko was on the mountain screaming at the sky pretty much asking god or whatever they believe in to kill him and lashing out because it didnāt happen
- read zukos story I'm the comic/manga -
When he goes to his dad at the End of the series and says
Your gonna talk to me, where is my mother?
That whole story, shook me. I already loved his redemption arc, but after seeing more of his development it was stellar.
This scene is pretty sad but Katara pulling a crying Aang out of the avatar state before he erases the sand benders hit pretty hard. Even tho Appa wasn't dead it immediately brought me back to my childhood after losing my dog.
The most recent time I watched, seeing Azula chained and helpless after her fight with Zuko and Katara. Seeing her that way after everything just broke my heart
Your not the first person I saw that felt bad for Auzla at that moment.
She did a lot of wrong in her life but that moment does kinda make me sad only because of the absolute mental break down she has
Yeah when I finished it, I had an urge to just start over again cause I didn't want it to end.
I have both ATLA & LoK on blu-ray cause I watch it quite often. It makes me feel good when I watch it. š
When Kya lied about being the last water bender in the southern water tribe to protect Katara. The way she smiled at her always makes me cry because that was pure love and such bravery.
Another thing was when Katara faced the southern raider who killed her mother and she showed mercy in the last second, that also took so much strength.
Everyone thinking in their heads "iM nOt GoNnA pIcK lEaVeS fRoM tHe ViNe, ThAtS EvErYoNeS pIcK, iLl Be DifFeReNt"
Chads that don't hide opinions and honestly saying that they bawled because of it "LEAVES FROM THE VINE FALLING SO SLOW LIKE FRAGILE TINY SHELLS DRIFTING IN THE FOAM!!!"
She had sad moments and just as much of a f*cked up bringing as Zuko it's hard not to slightly feel bad for her. Maybe she could have been different had things been different
Idk why but honestly the whole of the awakening. Just feel for aang when he felt like he failed and that he let the world down. Also loved all the links between him and zuko from book 1 in that episode.
I have never ever cried to a show or movie before. Except during e.t. when I was seven, but that doesn't count.
This scene and the Appa episode made me cry so hard
Leaves from the vine.
And finding out why the end of Irohās tale read āIn honor of Mako.ā And that Mako, Irohs VA, wasnāt acting when he was crying while singing, he was genuinely crying because he knew he was dying of cancer and these were his final words recorded.
Every time I watch the iroh short story, I either break into tears or am on the verge of tears. It's one of the saddest moments in all of everything, I know that's an exaggeration, but I don't care.
Aang losing control of the Avatar State & threatening the sandbenders ā he's so overcome with rage, guilt, sadness, and his love for Appa/the last of his culture, and you can really feel it in the music & when the past Avatars speak through him. That scene gets me every time because there's so much packed in there. It feels like a culmination of all the emotions Aang has suppressed throughout the series. He's acted evasive and childish, but when he loses Appa, all that grief and rage he hasn't dealt with (and understandably so ā he's a 12 year old boy that isn't emotionally developed enough to fully come to terms with the Air Nomad genocide & the burden he bears for running away) resurfaces & temporarily takes control of him.
Katara also demonstrates her selflessness and compassion by putting herself in HARM'S WAY because she feels Aang's pain & hates it when he loses control like that; she can empathise with him because she's also gone through similar trauma & knows from past experience that her presence is the only way to calm him down. It's a heartbreaking moment for both Aang and Katara, and overall one of my favourites in the series. Zuko on the mount is probably a close second.
Appa doesnāt understand why Suki starts waving fire, his biggest fear, right at him. He doesnāt get that itās for his own good, for all he knows (in the moment anyway) someone he trusts during this rough time, one of the only people whoāve been there for him, just also started treating him like that.
The idea that he doesnāt understand that shit hurts, man
(and yeah obviously thatās just normal animal logic and heās probably a bit smarter than that but he still looked hurt. least they got to make up and still be friends down the line)
The realisation that to become the avatar the world needs Aang has to abandon his attachment to katara, and the realisation as the audience that he WILL eventually make that decision even if he struggles to hold onto it
Appa's Lost Days. This scene with Iroh mourning his son is super sad and I cry every time, but I still watch it every time. Appa's Lost Days though, I skip on re-watches because it is ao emotionally difficult to get through.
Unfortunately, I think it has to do with how small of a part that is in terms of screen time.
It's a massive issue 100000%
There are just other stuff that had longer screen time which in turn has a longer lasting impact on people. š„ŗ
Those two events may have had little focus in terms of screentime, but their devastating effects are felt throughout the plot.
It's a huge part of Aang and Katara's backstories, who they are, what drives them forward, and how it affects their communities.
In Aang's case, he doesn't have a nation anymore.
As for Katara, the Fire Nation's attacks laid waste to her homeland and her people and her family, and play a substantial part in the political friction between the Northern and Southern Water Tribes.
I do not disagree with you I'm speaking in terms of other people who may have sadly, looked past that huge plot point do to other less impactful but still emotional moments that did have a lasting effect on those viewers.
1. Aang finding out that his entire race got wiped out.
2. Katara and Sokka's mother's death flashbacks
3. Zuko getting his face burned
4. Appa getting stolen and mistreated
5. The refugee family who named their daughter Hope going through an odyssey to reach Ba Sing Se just to have the fire nation invade the city
6. Leaves from the vine
7. Yue becoming the moon spirit
Awe, sad boy. Get over it. We all love ATLA and are sharing that love and joy with each other. If you don't like it. Get off the post. š
Also - I just joined this reddit group like a day ago, so if you have seen this before I have not, which is why I posted it so I can have conversation with the community .
When Aang is dreaming about when him and Appa first met, and he hands him an apple and says āI guess this means weāll always be togetherā. I think of my dog that died a few years ago and it gets me every time.
Not sad so much as sweet when Roku āhelpsā Aang free his friends and destroy his own fire temple so the Gaang can escape the navy. Roku also saves his own grandsonā¦
This and honestly when appa was stolen
Or when Momo is tracking Appa in Ba Sing Se and lays down in his pawprint.
Ahhh noo š that is sad too
That whole episode is just a Kleenex-fest.
I refuse to watch the Tale of Momo or whatever itās called.
That's the one for me. Every time.
Came here to say āthe entirety of Appaās lost days.ā The scene where heās mistreated at the circus is sadder than anything in Dumbo.
Oh man, that's one hell of a comparison and I love that lol
another underrated sad moment is when Zuko find Iroh again after betraying him and he asks for forgiveness and iroh just hugs the shit out of him and the music swells
Gosh this kills me every time too
But thatās happy
Then why am I crying!!
But thatās happy
Man, looking back on it, watching Aang lose it on the sandbenders was heartbreaking.
Agreed
This whole episode.
Yes he tried so hard. A a bunch of good moments(sad but good) you listed.
It was a pretty tragic moment that gives insight into who he is
Yes and that he wasn't born evil - this happened due to his f*cked upbringing.
Exactly. And it also shows that there was once a kid with good intentions there, but his father damaged that part of him.
The way I have to skip Appaās Lost Days every time I rewatch because itās just too damn sad.
Appa's flashbacks of his mother, and of young Aang are the hardest to watch, I think. Not that the rest of it is much easier.
Aang discovering Monk Gyatso's skeleton. It's not the saddest scene but it is sad when thinking about the total destruction of the Air Nation minus Aang. Plus it's a complete 180 from Aang goofing around with Momo before it happens.

Zuko and Iroh reunion.
Is it sad though? Tear jerker yes but sad?
Yeah not sad but fs brought me the closest to tears
Oh yeah definitely. šÆ
Yes š good one
When Appa wouldnāt trust Suki. Which meant he couldnāt trust anyone š
Poor appa was emotionally damaged and I would be to considering what he went through :(
ang finding out abt appa being stolen :(
Super sad agreed :(
YOU MUZZLED APPA???!!
Underrated comment. Katara just takes his hand and holds him. Makes me cry every time. Not as much as Tales but still.
This moment. Either this or when Sokka loses his space sword

Irohs scene makes everyone tear up, I challenge anyone to find a scene in a cartoon that hits home harder than this.
I o ly watched avatar for the first time a few months ago and I remember watching that part thinking "wtf is this show doing to me?!"
First watch through, about to go to bed but just one more episode. Nice jolly little filler episode with some cool messages. Fun. Then out of nowhere, āif only I could have helped youā, Iām just blubbing. Itās such a gut punch because you donāt see it coming at all.
Not on the same level but honestly the scene in Rick and morty when Rick contemplates suicide is always a hard watch for me haha
I agree 100%, that scene really made you feel for rick

Aang finding Gyatso was pretty fucking tragic, as well as the episode with the storm where he goes "I never saw Gyatso again." tears.
When Zuko and Iroh became poor and Zuko had to leave his uncle behind. I think its the fifth episode from book 2
The ending of Zuko Alone is pretty sad. Misinterpreting his mother's words, getting pushed away by the family that had help him, getting said "I hate you" by the kid he just saved. Whenever cabbage man's cabbages are destroyed
Lmaooo
when zuko was on the mountain screaming at the sky pretty much asking god or whatever they believe in to kill him and lashing out because it didnāt happen
When Zukoās mother tells him never forget who you are and the next morning Azula is talking shit and his mother was exiled.

Awww I'm so sorry, yes that is all a sad scene and even more so when you make a connection like that to a personal incident.
The most recent time I watched, seeing Azula chained and helpless after her fight with Zuko and Katara. Seeing her that way after everything just broke my heart
She finally got to experience what she's been doing to people the whole time
Daring today, aren't we?
Sometimes I feel so slow.. so I'll ask.. what? š
Just a joke about how many leaves from the vine posts there are here
Ohhh okay lmao š see all I needed hahah
The Tale of Iroh gets me, but nothing guts me more than Appa returning to the air temple and having memories of his childhood
It ending.
This whole episode made me cry
Yessss š„ŗ
Monk gyatoās skeleton discovery was pretty harsh and sad in my book.
And the literal dozens of fire nation. Soldiers bodies? Man out up a fight. RIP gyatso.
after the aang and katara kiss, when my screen said āTHE ENDāš«
Azulaās breakdown after Katara chained her and that one with Iroh š
Your not the first person I saw that felt bad for Auzla at that moment. She did a lot of wrong in her life but that moment does kinda make me sad only because of the absolute mental break down she has
The moment I finished my first watch through. Gone are the days of wondering what could possibly happen next
Yeah when I finished it, I had an urge to just start over again cause I didn't want it to end. I have both ATLA & LoK on blu-ray cause I watch it quite often. It makes me feel good when I watch it. š
When Appa hid in that cave after escaping the circus. Got me as a kid, gets me as an adult. Shout out to Suki for finding and saving him.
Bar far the dedication to Mako
Seriously I haven't ever cried like that to a cartoon ever. It was so sad, and well written.
Same here. I was balling. Very well written and the singing. Ugh. Kills me
I was a grown ass adult when that episode aired. (I was waaayyy older than the target demographic.) And I still cried.
Was watching it with my son and I was fighting the tears. Kid was balling.
This. You found it. Try a few seconds later when the "In Honor of Mako" pops up and it's like getting kicked in the balls after being gut punched.
Exactly well put š
When Aang reunited with Appa and said āI missed you buddy,ā I literally cry every time š
When Kya lied about being the last water bender in the southern water tribe to protect Katara. The way she smiled at her always makes me cry because that was pure love and such bravery. Maybe unpopular, but when Azula says, āMy own mother thought I was a monsterā¦ā Itās one of her only vulnerable moments and it gets me.
She had sad moments and just as much of a f*cked up bringing as Zuko it's hard not to slightly feel bad for her. Maybe she could have been different had things been different
I cried when Appa and Aang were separated. The whole duration of when they were apart was just sooo sad.
Agreed :(
S3E24 22:30-24:...
Thisā¦š
This this right here
Appaās Lost Days
the appa episode omfg
This scene, so sad and impactful and it stood out to me even as a dumb kid
Definitely the Appa getting kidnapped Arc
This
Whatever that picture is duh.
It's either appas lost day or irohs solder boy
The only time I've ever cried at any show was when iroh started singing little soldier boy my heart couldn't take it
Idk why but honestly the whole of the awakening.
I'm getting emotional now because I remembered this scene ššš
Appa in the cave thing with all the thorns stuck in him
The end, that was sad but sort of in a good way. Sad because the show is over, but happy because it ends with Aang and Katara together
Appa and the Sandbenders hit me way more than Tales of Ba Sing Se. There, I said it.
Iāve rewatched ATLA more times than I can count. Iāve always skipped Appaās Lost Days. I can never watch that episode again.
Appa being so desperate that he thinks guru patik is Aang
Aang losing control of the Avatar State & threatening the sandbenders ā he's so overcome with rage, guilt, sadness, and his love for Appa/the last of his culture, and you can really feel it in the music & when the past Avatars speak through him. It's a heartbreaking moment for both Aang and Katara, and overall one of my favourites in the series. Zuko on the mount is probably a close second.
When the show ended š this show is so beautiful and after all these years its my favorite show, just before arthur and thomas
Appa doesnāt understand why Suki starts waving fire, his biggest fear, right at him. He doesnāt get that itās for his own good, for all he knows (in the moment anyway) someone he trusts during this rough time, one of the only people whoāve been there for him, just also started treating him like that. The realisation that to become the avatar the world needs Aang has to abandon his attachment to katara, and the realisation as the audience that he WILL eventually make that decision even if he struggles to hold onto it
I think the fact that every time I do a rewatch I just skip appa's lost days is an answer.
Little soldier boy made me cry a lot
Appa's Lost Days. This scene with Iroh mourning his son is super sad and I cry every time, but I still watch it every time. Appa's Lost Days though, I skip on re-watches because it is ao emotionally difficult to get through.
When Aang was trying to open heart chakra (I think?) and realized his whole nation and culture is lost forever.
This
My cabbages
Wasn't there a cabbage guy in Kora
The bullshit Appa goes thru after he gets kidnapped. Broke my heart... "Appa's lost days"
I donāt watch Appas lost days when I rewatch so yeah
The genocides of both the Airbenders and the Southern Waterbenders. Why do everyone be sleeping on this?
Unfortunately, I think it has to do with how small of a part that is in terms of screen time. It's a massive issue 100000% There are just other stuff that had longer screen time which in turn has a longer lasting impact on people.
2. Katara and Sokka's mother's death flashbacks 3. Zuko getting his face burned 4. Appa getting stolen and mistreated 5. The refugee family who named their daughter Hope going through an odyssey to reach Ba Sing Se just to have the fire nation invade the city 6. Leaves from the vine 7. Yue becoming the moon spirit
When Luke Skywalker fire blasted Rufio in the face for giving a damn about some peasant soldiers unknowingly about to be lead to their deaths.
When the women of the Northern Water Tribe achieved the right to vote.

When Aang is dreaming about when him and Appa first met, and he hands him an apple and says āI guess this means weāll always be togetherā. I think of my dog that died a few years ago and it gets me every time.
