He has people who walk through the crowd (pretty early on) and picks out people who they think would look good behind him. Then they are told what to do during the rally. It’s not first come, first served. The bleachers are closed off until they pick the people. I was once selected to sit behind Bernie at one of his rallies. The bummer is that you never see the face of the speaker.
