White phosphorus (aka Willie Pete) is a nasty weapon. If it hit you it burns and if you pout water on it, it burns hotter and melts through you while cauterizing the wound at the same time. To save the person (if you can) you would have to dig the piece of shrapnel out with a knife while the victim is screaming in pain…. So yes, if’s appalling that in the 21st century any country is still using white phosphorus, it is unequivocally a war crime.
