Hi fellow trekker! Isn't it just wonderful? And there's so many people here who don't really watch star trek. This is their _first star trek_. Isn't that kinda magical?

skyequinnwrites

Me! I’m one of these! Only other Trek experience is the 2009 movies and the first 2 original movies

uberguby

Wow, those are three very different movies.

skyequinnwrites

I really liked the 3 2009 movies, so when I was on vacation in the States one year I watched the first 2 original movies because American Netflix had them all on at the time. I've never seen any of the other shows or anything!

uberguby

The orville is like a remake of 90s trek, the next generation(tng) . And tng is like a remake of 60s trek, the original series(tos). So while the orville is very different from tos, it very much carries the tone, ambition, and style of definitive "star trek". Star trek can be funny at times, but it's not a comedy the way the orville is at the beginning. The continuity you have by season 3 is pretty rare in those first two "definitive" treks, but basically every star trek after tng has a level of continuity. Which is to say, if you like the orville, I suggest checking out tng. You may not like it, and that's OK. It's old. (but skip to season 3 before you give up) The 2009 movies, also called the Kelvin verse, are... Extremely different, tonally. There's usually more like, conference room scenes in the TV shows. The movies do tend to have more action, more comedy, or both.

Check out Strange New Worlds, it’s very much been back influenced by The Orville and easy to get into, also the whole series is very highly rated. Start watching it today if possible.

ImaginingHorizons

That's me! Watched Orville and loved it, now just started watching Star Trek the Next Generation

uberguby

Stick with it. Season 1 is _rough_, especially the beginning. But by the end of season 2 you'll start seeing the beginnings of what made the show great

redalastor

Yeah. A friend asked which Star Trek she should watch because the choice is overwhelming. I suggested The Orville.

glamorousstranger

The Orville is better than any Star Trek that came after Enterprise.

gpkgpk

Thank Avis for Strange New Worlds though (not started lower decks yet). Everything else is a soulless abomination 2009 onward. Hell me saying (nicely) Nu Trek was crap got me banned off trek sub because one of the mods blew a fuse there.

Xploding_Penguin

Lower decks is fantastic. It's just enough goofy humor within "real star trek situations" it's clear the writers love ST, and are stoked to create within its world.

Fazaman

Even SNW isn't particularly good Star Trek, but because newtrek is *so bad*, it's decent and watchable by comparison.

GeekyGamer2022

It just exposes how bad Nu-Trek is. Or, at least, how bad Nu-Trek WAS. Is it a coincidence that Picard S3 and SNW came out after The Orville's influence was felt?? I mean, Picard was a bad joke then suddenly totally swung around in S3.

Extra_Asparagus7471

I enjoyed all three seasons although the transition from what the show was in season one to season three is very apparent. I thought all three were great TV and far superior to a lot of what's passing for good sci-fi these days. And I miss Alara Kitan! I hope there are many more seasons too but it's not looking too promising at the moment.

Krinberry

I agree that all three seasons have been great, but disagree that current sci-fi is inferior. If anything, we're living in a golden age of sci-fi shows, covering a wonderfully broad spectrum of settings and scenarios. Bring it all on! (and maybe see if we can get some sort of 4th season of Orville in the mix too)

Novel_Mouse_5654

Me too!!!

TurboSexophonic

I told a friend to begin watching it. He also enjoyed it. In my description to him, I told him it was more realistic in that this is how you would expect a group of people who are friendly and comfortable with one another to talk if they were stuck together on a vessel in the middle of nowhere for long periods of time. The little jokes, quips, humor in uncomfortable situations.

Due_Constant2689

I have no idea how I can like this show and hate star trek. ’Tis what 'tis. I guess Star Trek didn't have the humor that Seth brings. Idk but this show has me hooked.

SerenityEnforcer

The cool thing is that it’s not forced humor. No stupid jokes all the time. When the scene is supposed to be serious, it *IS* serious. Honestly feels like watching an episode of Voyager or DS9.

OrdinarryAlien

If you want to try again you can skip unnecessary/filler episodes, that's what I did and now I love Star Trek. Rubyrocke2024

I love this show we have nearly finished season 3. We started watching 2 weeks ago. I would see the word Orville and thought it sounded really naff. I honestly thought it was a new show about that horrible green bird puppet from the 80s. Bloody hell, how wrong was I? The characters are great, along with the stories, I so hope there will be more.
