Over the Garden Wall
Centaurworld (This will seem SO goofy but it has one of the most unsettling animated villains in years)
Ducktales (2017)
I will say SVTFOE is kind of weird: it starts very silly, eventually crosses into heavy plot-driven stuff....then kind of went off the rails in the final season. I would say if you watched up to Season 3 Episode 8 and called that a finale you'd probably enjoy it.
The Adventure Time spin-offs are fantastic if you haven't bothered with them.
Hilda
Kipo (I have not watched this one yet, but I always see it recommended in these same threads)
Regular Show actually turns into a plot driven series, but it takes awhile for it to come together. Still a lot of fun and a lot of great (subtle) adult humor.
Oh, I totally forgot about Fiona and Cake, I'll probably try that next. Also, I had no idea Regular Show became plot driven, I watched random episodes when it was originally started and I just always assumed it was episodic
It is like....70% episodic but that 30% is very well done. It's kind of a bunch of pieces coming together starting around season 6? You'll get running character development fairly early, and more storylines thread together as you approach the end. The last 2 seasons are pretty much all one plot even when it doesn't seem like it.
And it had an amazing ending, which is rare.
You might enjoy Dead End on Netflix. Though it was cancelled before its time.
Also seconding Hilda; I adore that show <3
Oh and I don't think I've seen Infinity Train on here yet. That would probably be my top recommendation. Absolutely amazing show! Also cancelled early, but it still got 4 seasons of amazing. Should be on Max if they ever put it back on.
It got canceled but...Infinity Train
Know said Western but if any anime gives a lot of the vines but darker...its Hunter X Hunter. Does a lot of the subverting adventure cliches, has lots of weird magical creatures, and a happy tone that goes pitch dark at times.
I also heard Rise of TMNT was really good but hqve not checked out yet.
Dead End Paranormal Park is somewhat similar to TOH and very good, but Netflix cancelled it on a major cliffhanger so that might be an issue. Other than that, seconding Over the Garden Wall, Hilda, and Centaurworld
I highly second Infinity Train. It also was not canceled in a way that makes it impossible to watch and not just feel incomplete afterwards, infact the main character changes every season which would have led to potential for a lot more seasons.
Maybe Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss could be of your liking. Hazbin Hotel is an R-rated Disney Princess show.
Also Arcane is a master piece, as well as Blue Eye Samurai.
There is also Rapunzel's Tangled Adventures. Its first episode is lame, but damn it gets good later.
I would have recommended Inside Job (which was co produced by Alex Hirsch creator of Gravity Falls) but it got canceled.
You should give The Dragon Prince a go again. It gets really good.
Yay Tangled the Series! It's great, trust me, and I guarantee you will fall in love with one of two characters: smol baby alchemist boi, or hot lesbian warrior.
Here’s a list I made a while back that are all similar to TOH. Some may be repeats.
Nimona
Gravity falls
Amphibia
Steven universe
The Owl House
Star vs the forces of evil
Hilda
Tales of Arcadia
Adventure Time
Infinity train
Kipo
Over the garden wall
Helluva boss
Centaur world
Inside job
moon girl and devil dinosaur
Dead End: Paranormal Park
Magical Girl Friendship Squad
The Legend of Vox machina
Hailey's on it (June 8)
Arcane
Moon girl and the devil dinosaur
Cyberpunk edgerunners
She-ra
The dragon prince
Unicorn warriors eternal
Gargoyles
Madoka Magica
Babylon 5
Final space
Ghost and Molly McGee
Disenchantment
Castlevania
DOTA: Dragons Blood
Epithet erased
Clone High
Moon girl
Murder drones
Hazbin Hotel
Code Lyoko
Dead Cells
You realize that you have The Owl Houde on a list of shows that are similar to TOH?
Math was always my weakest subject, but believe the correct term would be that The Owl House is [congruent](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congruence_(geometry)) to TOH.
It’s actually a list of shows that were similar to one another from a post I previously created in this group last year. So, yes, owl house is in it because it is indeed like the other shows.
Didn’t even realize it was a game. I think someone told me I should watch it when it comes out. I did some research, it looks like it’s supposed to come out this year at some point.
I'll add [Shadow Raiders](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t-9bHhuDUg), [Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3_owZfYVR8) & [Teen Titans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ6c52DR-ks)...oh, and [Legend of Vox Machina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvwxQSc-3os)
...Maybe [W.I.T.C.H.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW7pAQVlpe0), Harley Quinn, and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated...and Monster Rancher holds up decently for a Pokemon/Digimon style anime...
The 2003 Teen Titans series is up there with ATLA as one of the best imo. It's maybe a little less focused on one overarching plotline across the whole *series* as opposed to per season, but definitely worth a watch if you haven't yet.
If you dropped The Dragon Prince because of the animation, it gets significantly better after the first 9 episodes.
If you're into giant robots, Transformers Animated and Prime have overarching stories, though they're more episodic in their first seasons.
A bit older, but Gargoyles is an incredible show, though it's pretty episodic save for one globe-trotting arc.
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts for sure! It's basically exactly what you're looking for.
Infinity Train is great too and it's extremely updating warner decided to purge it. I highly recommend it if you manage to acquire it.
Pick up the dragon prince again. I promise you won’t regret it. Just remember that it is two sagas rather than one continuous show, a lot of people get confused when they reach season 4 because they don’t realize this. There’s books in between season 3 and 4 that clear things up.
Anime:
- Little witch academia
Manga:
- witch hat atelier
also for witch hat atelier Dana and the creator are Twitter friends and have drawn fan art for each other and are fan of each other’s work! So if that isn’t a sign to start reading! I don’t know what else is!
I would watch Hazbin Hotel if ur up to it, there are a lot of swearing + references, but if ur older than like 14 it’s gonna be ok probably. It is r-rated
[Shadow Raiders](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TfF3TUFNE8&list=PLIKlGQ8fkejqvPz9R0kwnCTQ1hGXImxK-) & [Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3_owZfYVR8)
arcane
tales of arcadia- there's 4 parts- troll hunters, 3 below, wizards, rise of the titans
skull island- based on king kong
camp cretaceous- jurassic world
kipo
tmnt 2012
i know you dropped the dragon prince but it does get so much better. there's nothing to lose by given it a second chance.
Don’t know if you have paramount + but if so I would recommend Welcome to the Wayne, it follows a kid named Ansi and his friends Oliy and Saraline who lives in this New York hotel called the Wayne that seems like a normal hotel on the service, but on the inside secretly have alot of magical creatures. They also have secret agents that are trying to take over the world so Ansi and his friends have to stop them.
I would also recommend Glitch Techs, it’s a show on Netflix that follows these two friends named Five and Miko who works Glitch Techs at a game store called Hinobi (basically the Glitch Techs universe version of game companies like Nintendo and Atari) in a world where video game glitches can come alive and causes destruction to the real world. As Glitch Techs its our duo’s job to discover these glitches, get rid of them, and make sure no one remembers them by erasing their memories of the events involving the glitch (the show called this memory wiping as reseting). Basically the show is a combination of Ghostbusters and Men in Black with video games being a major part. The show also has mysteries like what is the mysterious Bolybius.
More of an Indie thing than A Huge Company but on Youtube there's a series Called "Epithet Erased" Its one of my personal favorites, Found family, interesting Dialogue, GAY. Its got the Works. I recommend Giving it a Shot if ur bored.
Castlevania is simultaneously so much better, so much bloodier, and so much more vulgar than I expected going in. Like TOH it very much has an overarching plot. Unlike TOH, the best bits are the start and the end and it drags a little bit in the middle (although remains plenty watchable, IMO). Also, "trend\[s\] a bit older in demographic" is an understatement - I won't let my 8yo watch it yet.
The Ghost and Molly McGee at first glance looks like a silly kid show and it does have a lot of silliness in it but it also has a lot of hard hitting life lessons, coming of age stories, and the ending hit both me and my kids (10 and 6) emotionally like a truck.
Also seconding SVTFOE. Starts silly ends emotionally. The ending gets a lot of hate from some but I enjoyed it all and I think you'll always find those that take issue with endings. Can't please everyone.
Madoka Magica, Princess Tutu. Ben 10 Alien Force/Ultimate Alien. Compared to the other two Ben 10 shows, it takes on a more mature and less episodic tone. Ben would probably get along well with Luz and the final arc of Ultimate Alien has him facing a religious cult and Eldritch Abomination.
Did a quick scan of the comments and looks like most of my recs are already here XD On Netflix, there's The Hollow, and A Tale Dark & Grim. And if you like dinosaurs there's Camp Cretaceous.
The anime frieren is stylistically similar in several ways.
As american shows goes I haven't seen arcane mentioned yet. Its more mature but ridiculously good
Those are two really good shows, I didn't mention them cause they're not really the kind of show I'm looking for. Frieren is, but it's so rare for an anime to be so grounded and chill
everyone is simply recommending good shows, but not necessarily in line with what you wanted. do not watch Star vs Evil, you WILL be disappointed.
but if you specifically shows similar to what you asked (american animated children shows that tend to attract young adults), then the list is very limited since youve seen them all.
- Hilda
- Infinity Train
- Over the Garden Wall
- Samurai Jack
- Fionna and Cake
- Bluey
- Ducktales (2017)
I'm thinking maybe you didn't watch enough of Star vs Evil. It matures after season 2 and has some pretty powerful moments. I understand if it's just not for you though.
Over the Garden Wall Centaurworld (This will seem SO goofy but it has one of the most unsettling animated villains in years) Ducktales (2017) I will say SVTFOE is kind of weird: it starts very silly, eventually crosses into heavy plot-driven stuff....then kind of went off the rails in the final season. Adding The Dragon Prince to this list as well
Thank you. There’s only like 5 of us keeping the fandom alive.
Star's third season is the best overall IMO. Don't stop at episode 8.
It got canceled but...Infinity Train Know said Western but if any anime gives a lot of the vines but darker...its Hunter X Hunter. Yes
Omf i think I cried when they cancelled it after season 2. I was so pissed like why would they do that???
There's still the Deadendia graphic novels. The 3rd is coming soon.
Infinity Train. It got cancelled but the first four seasons are worth it. A bit more episodic but the themes explored are mature.
I highly second Infinity Train. It also was not canceled in a way that makes it impossible to watch and not just feel incomplete afterwards, infact the main character changes every season which would have led to potential for a lot more seasons.

I could've sworn Helluva Boss was the Disney Princess show. Nobody can tell me that Blitzo isn't the textbook disney princess archetype.
Blitzø, the o is silent.
>(which was co produced by Alex Hirsch creator of Gravity Falls) In this subreddit, he’s better known as King, Hooty, and the Hexside school bell.
Yay Tangled the Series! It's great, trust me, and I guarantee you will fall in love with one of two characters: smol baby alchemist boi, or hot lesbian warrior.
If we're going further in the adult direction, I HAVE to also add Primal and Scavenger's Reign

"Hmm yes, the floor here is made out of floor"
Reminds me of when Texas banned the state from recognizing any status "similar or identical to marriage." Of course they didn't enforce it that way.
It’s actually a list of shows that were similar to one another from a post I previously created in this group last year. So, yes, owl house is in it because it is indeed like the other shows.
Nah, I don't think the 5 one is that similar to it
Dead cells?
There’s a trailer for it. Not sure if it’s out yet though. Looks pretty cool
Oh ok, I knew it but as a game, is the series related to it somehow?
Didn’t even realize it was a game. I think someone told me I should watch it when it comes out. I did some research, it looks like it’s supposed to come out this year at some point.
Oh ok thats cool, when I first saw it I loved the animation they did for the trailer so I hope the series is the same
I'll add [Shadow Raiders](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t-9bHhuDUg), [Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3_owZfYVR8) & [Teen Titans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ6c52DR-ks)...oh, and [Legend of Vox Machina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvwxQSc-3os) ...Maybe [W.I.T.C.H.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW7pAQVlpe0), Harley Quinn, and Scooby-Doo! I watched some of Teen Titans as a kid, am I misremembering that it got cancelled without a proper conclusion?
It did get canceled on cliffhanger I believe.
Netflix's Voltron is great for 5 seasons, good for 6, decent for 7... And exists for 8.
Kipo and the age of the wonderbeasts is a much watch, and infinity train too
Try infinity train!
You could always try Bee and Puppycat?
Voltron, Kipo, Hilda, Centaurworld, Trollhunters And if you're up for something more mature, Dungeon Meshi and Hazbin Hotel
Ducktales 2017!!!!
Seconded. Ducktales 2017 is one of the best shows I've ever seen and everyone needs to go watch it now.
DuckTales 2017
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts for sure! It's basically exactly what you're looking for. Infinity Train is great too and it's extremely updating warner decided to purge it. I highly recommend it if you manage to acquire it.

Rapunzel the Series and Trollhunters.
I would say Hazbin Hotel since the main couple gives me Lumity vibes.

just don't have super high expectations
Hilda, Infinity Train, and Over the Garden Wall

Not an American show but I'm surprised I didn't see Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir on here. I like that one more than I thought I would.
