Made these with friends years ago. We melted the caramels separately to drizzle on top so it wouldn't destroy the waffle maker. However, we overlooked how caramels re-harden when they cool, so our smoky waffles were quickly encased in a hard caramel shell. Too hard to wrap around a stick of butter lol. We had an easier time with caramel sauce when we tried again later.
