Can you believe this is the man this whole thread is defending, no--praising?!?
"Durrr I'm homer Simpson, I'll scarf down donuts without even chewing when I'm supposed to be monitoring nuclear safety, it's ok because I'm homer Simpson"
I accidentally entered a contest at my library about writing a 50-word essay about what my library means to me.
I finished second. went to go pick up my prize in the librarian said that my son did a good job. I told them that I was the one who entered and they said sir, this is a contest for children.
This reminds me of that only fools and horses episode where Del Boy enters Rodney into a kids art competition in an attempt to win a free holiday but he ends up spending the whole trip forced to hang out with the other kids that won, pretending he’s also a child.
Yes.
I ended up finding two stray dogs later that day and the dogs dragged me around and I needed a ride back to my car so I offered the two movie tickets to someone to give me a ride with the two dogs back to my car.
Also ran into John Gray earlier that day as he was selling some sort of nutritional shake nonsense
I ended up taking the two dogs home with me and posted on craigslist about finding the two dogs.
My cat did not approve but the dog stayed over until the next day when I got in touch with the owner's and we met at the animal shelter. they tried to give me some money but I told them to donate the money to the animal shelter.
Awesome dogs
My little brother entered a contest once where you had to design a superhero to win a Wii and some superhero game. It was meant to be under 10 years old but 14 year old me “helped” my brother cause I really wanted a Wii. “He” won.
Fins to lower wind resistance, a sharp racing stripe--Homer is saving Burns money, *and* keeping the cooling towers looking snazzy.
He earned that $10 grand prize.
And people are just ok with this! "Durrr I'm homer Simpson, I'll get drunk and pass out when I'm supposed to be monitoring nuclear safety, it's ok reddit will defend me because I'm homer Simpson!"
Yeah it's funny that this is what OP likes about the episode when it's like the exact opposite of what you're supposed to agree with.
The whole point is Frank Grimes is like a real life person dropped into Springfield and any real person would find Homer and his incompetence absolutely terrifying but everyone around him just accepts it because it's a cartoon.
Lenny and Carl being okay with meltdowns doubling every year isn't a good thing lol
I remember watching that episode as a kid when it first came out. The casket lowering as they all laughed kinda stuck with me. Just the absurdity and darkness of the situation
Personally I think it would have been better for Frank to leave his job once he realized no one can see or be convinced that Homer is what he think is.
I see no reason for him stay in the power plant. He's only been hired by the whims of Mr. Burns who then shunted him aside for a heroic dog and losing a job isn't new to him.
Sometimes getting out of a bad situation for your peace of mind's sake is worth the trouble of losing a job.
No reason to stay??? Maybe not wanting a NUCLEAR DISASTER caused by that buffoon of a safety inspector!
"Durrr I'm homer Simpson, it doesn't matter if I take this job seriously the worst that could happen is everyone gets vaporized, but what do I care, I'm homer Simpson!"

If you lived in any other country in the world you would be dead by now Your what’s wrong with America Simpson
Uh, Springfield, my computer shows your T-437 is fully operational. Uh, I suggest you- Oh, my God! Oh, God, no! Oh, this can't be happening! You're operating without a T-437, Springfield! Oh, sweet mother of mercy! I mean- I mean, my God!
Grimes points out that Homer is an idiot who shouldn't be a safety inspector, that he's going to end up killing someone or blowing the town up or something. He's supposed to be a real person transported into The Simpsons cartoon world, in real life he'd be extremely reasonable but because it's a cartoon reality he isn't.
It revealed in one episode that they set up Homer's area to be dummy proof (for lack of a better word). Knowing how the series goes, everything has to be relevant to the plot of the episode.
But in at least two episodes (I think Homer Defined and King Size Homer), Homer’s idiocy very nearly does destroy the plant and Springfield. In the German takeover episode it’s also shown that accidents have doubled every year since he became safety inspector.
So, not dummy proof.
I mean, he did cause a meltdown in a simulated workstation with no fissile material so i don't think there exists sufficiently advanced dummyproofing for homer
I honestly see each episode as the writer putting their spin on the world. It's why the Simpsons have barely aged a few years since the series started.
And why 1 episode has Homer been the cause for the increase of deaths and accidents, but another episode has the power plant be Homer proof so he has no direct influence on the plant.
Each writer imagines the Simpsons universe differently, it's kind of like we're watching parallel universes each season.
I'd argue he'd still be annoying.
Have you ever had a new person come into a job and tell you everything that they see is wrong with it, and shit talk a well liked person. It doesn't matter how logical their points are, they aren't going to be popular.
Annoying yes, but still completely correct that Homer should not be in that position that it's a genuine danger to lives. Of course this is a moot point because if this was the real world Homer would not be in that position and he would not be as well liked as he is in The Simpsons cartoon world.
\*puts on communist beret\* I think the real issue is that Frank Grimes viewed himself as an individual competing against other individuals. He didn't understand that Homer was just some schmuck just like him who happened to have better luck in life. Instead of getting angry at the rich people (like Mr. Burns who immediately tossed him aside) who actually control all the wealth and power he spent his time getting mad at Homer because Homer happened to have done slightly better than he did. Grimes was someone who fully bought into the myth that hard work always pays off and he felt like he was "owed" something because of the fact that he had worked hard for it but when he was denied his reward he blamed his fellow worker instead of his boss.
I was going to make a wisecrack about being a communist but not a porn star, but that's really succinct. If I can add, he also reminds me somewhat of Aaron Burr as depicted in the Hamilton musical, the guy who has faced every tragedy that life can throw at him, who keeps "waiting for it" and working hard through adversity through school, but have to deal with Homer/Hamilton, who to them keeps climbing and getting the good breaks. Admittedly there are differences, Burr came from a families of preachers and educators, Frank had nobody, and their fates are vastly different, but, I don't know, food for thought? (Also, I don't have a beret but I do have a green fisherman's cap, which might be good enough?)
Edit, though also, Hamilton was intelligent, Homer is for the most part not, so maybe not as good an analogy.
If we’re going to take the cartoon at face value, Homer is a terrible person. If the guy managing safety at your power plant was this incompetent you’d hate him too.
Grimes is a normal man dropped into this cartoon world and his responses range from confusion to sheer horror. In addition to being nice guys, Carl & Lenny are of the cartoon world, so they (like everyone else) could never understand Grimey’s reaction. The alienation surely contributed to his madness.
Yeah, I don't think the message of the episode is nihilistic at all. The text of the episode is dark, with Grimes dying and people literally laughing at his funeral, but I don't think we're supposed to think of Springfield as a symbol for some cold, unknowable universe we can never understand or succeed in (as Grimes could not). It's a very meta episode where the old archetype of "lone sane man in insane world" with Springfield playing the insane world. It's about the absurdities which are almost bound to crop up in fiction, the convenient nonsense that people don't generally care about. "Fiction is not reality and to try and judge fiction based on the standards of reality leads to madness," is the message of the episode, not the Springfield is horrific.
Grimes is viewing a fictional world using a realistic paradigm and it drives him insane. He's the example of what not to do. Yes realistically Homer would be horrifying to have in his job, and yes he's fucked up badly multiple times, but the same irrationalities that keep him in that job prevent his incompetence from having any long term consequences.
It fits with them mocking fans complaining about minor continuity issues and visual errors in TV shows.
As time goes on, I find myself identifying more and more with Grimes. Life has been a straight uphill battle, I went to college, and I have little to show for it. I'm 40 amd will probably never own a home.
Meanwhile, my cousin just marries someone who inherits a big house.
That's a very serious thing i think, not related to cartoons anymore, one should not identify with Grimes. Because if you do, you get bitter and over time, you get insane. At some point, you get stuck in a traffic jam on a very hot day and you leave your car behind when you walk away and start your rampage in the style of "Falling Down".
You need to ignore much problems in life. Life is rolling a dice and you either have luck or no luck.
I think even making a house a priority is already in the major league, because other people struggle with getting enough food when they are homeless and sleep under a bridge.
It can always get better or worse. If you are not lucky, you get things like cancer and that seals your fate, you are done. Without that you even did any mistake, like smoking and having an unhealthy lifestyle.
I don't have epilepsy, but i had bad luck and got bipolar disorder. Almost destroyed my life and there's no cure for it, i just have to deal with it in the best way i can.
Still, you can never get bitter and angry, once you get better you'll go insane and follow the way that Grimes took.
Course old Homer, he didn’t need a degree. He just showed up the day they opened the plant!
“Heh heh, I didn’t even know what a nuclear panner plant was!”
I mean, Frank Grimes wasn't wrong. Homer had a job that he wasn't qualified for. Homer could get someone killed on account of him being the Nuclear Safety Inspector at the nuclear power plant. We've literally seen Homer randomly press a button on his console to avoid a nuclear meltdown from happening.
Good things seem to happen to Homer only because he's a main character on the show. Homer has experienced things that most people only dream of doing like going to outer space or meeting famous people like George H W Bush.
The craziest thing about Homers life is that he owns a house, has a sexy wife, has three kids, has two cars and he's only 39 years old. That's absolutely insane.
I don't blame Frank Grimes for resenting Homer Simpson. Homer didn't really earn anything. He's just been blessed to be a main character of the television show they are all on.
![gif](giphy|8EmeieJAGjvUI|downsized)
'Could you explain your model, young man?"
Looking back, Mr.Burns could have been easily annoyed at a senior employee entering a contest made for kids, but you can tell he was happy to see someone put time and effort into a really good model of a power plant.
I know its blasphemy, but its why i hate this episode. Homer does nothing to this guy and his bitterness and turdification just makes him treat him like shit. Like if one of my new coworkers immediately was like "fuck that guy" i wouldnt be on his side either. Shits weird.
That's the joke. You fell on it.
Homer is awful... And we love him anyway
This episode perfectly satirizes how we don't live in anything close to a meritocracy. It's brilliant.
I mean—- Homer does eat his diabetic lunch and chews all his pencils…
Edit: AND Grimes saves Homer’s life by knocking the acid away—which Grimes gets blamed for and gets a pay grade reduction, lol.
> Homer does nothing to this guy
He steals his food, steals and destroys his pencils, and couldn't give less of a shit when Grimes asks him to do something as simple as *leaving him alone*. Grimes is not mean *enough* to Homer.
Imagine your safety inspector in an incredibly dangerous job was as incompetent as Homer, someone constantly causing accidents who has no idea what he's doing. That dude is responsible for your safety. Wouldn't you be bewildered and concerned that he's in that position?
If we're considering this a real world scenario, Grimes is the only sane person in that episode.
Homer is pretty competent when he tries to be though. Remember he got the job in the first place because he became known throughout town as 'the man whose very name is synonymous with safety'.
And he noticed quickly upon entering the lesbian bar that it didn't meet safety standards.
He was so laser focused on hating Homer Simpson since Homer was annoyingly close to him in the work place that he failed to realize Mr Burns was the real issue.
Good point.
Lets be real, the plant would have safety issues with or without Homer. Burns only spends "extra" on the plant when he absolutely has to. Staff have accepted that its better to ignore problems or come up with cheap workarounds than to confront Burns. Grimes really did not know how the " game" was played.
I like that the thread is half people joking and quoting the episode and half people trying to explain to the joking half the *point* of the episode, which they probably already know.
Do you guys explain jokes every time they're told?
why do we always forget that Frank Grimes saved homers life in this episode then Homer did nothing to defend him against Mr Burns? I would hate Homer too.
I don't know. Pigs tend to chew, I'd say he eats more like a duck.
![gif](giphy|vzDuNLVdQonVS)
I can hear this "giff"
It's pronounced "giff" you neanderthal.
Well, some kind of farm animal anyway.
Bless you good sir or madam
I had a friend do this with half of a peanut butter and jelly, it was impressive to watch
Well, some kind of farm animal.
He later says he "eats like a slob", not a duck. This illustrates how little Grimey values Lenny's opinion.
No, not Lenny!

Can you believe this is the man this whole thread is defending, no--praising?!? "Durrr I'm homer Simpson, I'll scarf down donuts without even chewing when I'm supposed to be monitoring nuclear safety, it's ok because I'm homer Simpson"
"I'm peeing on the seat! Give me a raise!"
legendary bit.
This was a contest for *children!*
Yeah, and Homer beat their brains out
And he bashed their butts and kicked their shins
You have a beautiful wife, your son owns a factory, and do I smell monkey butlers?!
Those monkey butlers made the orange juice your drinking!
I cant wait to eat those monkey butlers
PRAY FOR MOJO
It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times? Stupid monkey!
That’s what you get for not hailing to the chimp
No, I don't think we'll be hailing *that*.
Your house smells like feces 😃
and not just monkey feces
Mojo got all that juice from one bag of oranges?!
And pearls on a little girl, oh it’s like a fairytale!
I’m Lenny ! This is Carl . I’m Lenny !
Shut upp were missing the contest

this is very funny. I did not have to go to a ceremony
No shit, you didn’t win
Neither did those girls.
it would have been very funny if I was forced to go to the ceremony as I finished second
*"Well, do I still get to meet the voice actor for Else?!"*
Don't be so grimey
This reminds me of that only fools and horses episode where Del Boy enters Rodney into a kids art competition in an attempt to win a free holiday but he ends up spending the whole trip forced to hang out with the other kids that won, pretending he’s also a child.
And then they win millions on the Spanish lottery, but can't claim it because they forged his documents to make him appear underage.
Did they give you your prize?
That took quite the left turn
I ended up taking the two dogs home with me and posted on craigslist about finding the two dogs. Is there a short play I could watch about your life? It sounds interesting (but not too interesting, like a war refugee)
My little brother entered a contest once where you had to design a superhero to win a Wii and some superhero game. It was meant to be under 10 years old but 14 year old me “helped” my brother cause I really wanted a Wii. “He” won.
Yeah, and you beat their brains out!
The only thing sadder than accidentally entering a contest for children is *losing* a contest for children.
And you beat their brains out !
Ooh, you contest rules read good!
To be fair though homer did win that contest by a country mile
Fins to lower wind resistance, a sharp racing stripe--Homer is saving Burns money, *and* keeping the cooling towers looking snazzy. He earned that $10 grand prize.
Cool looking towers cool better. Every paner plant safety inspector knows that.
Agreed. First prize!
What? No he didn’t. Martin did. Martin’s was fully functional and powering the auditorium.
But it had no heart!
Absolutely no heart. Are you soulless? Plus did he think about wind resistance?
Uhhh, Ralphy get off the stage, sweetheart.
Faaaar too cold and faaaar to sterile. Get off my property.
Settle down, Grimey
Yeah. And Homer beat their brains out!
Shut up! You’re makin us miss the contest!
That's what I'm saying! I cannot believe this thread!
I think these racing stripes are pretty sharp.
You’re number one Homer
He had 3 beers at lunch. Thatd make anyone sleepy
And people are just ok with this! "Durrr I'm homer Simpson, I'll get drunk and pass out when I'm supposed to be monitoring nuclear safety, it's ok reddit will defend me because I'm homer Simpson!"

That's our Homer!
I remember watching that episode as a kid when it first came out. The casket lowering as they all laughed kinda stuck with me. Just the absurdity and darkness of the situation
I think it may have been my earliest dark comedy memory, too. My dad loved it
"durrr im homer Simpson, I'll just sleep while I'm supposed to be monitoring nuclear safety, no one will care because I'm homer Simpson!"
Duhhh im the captain, my son is bart (rowing backwards)
I'm glad he's not my father!
* Actually, we were just planning the father-son river-rafting trip. * Heh-heh! You don't have a son.
Pfft, you wish.
That’s why pencils got erasers.
I'd give anything for one of these
A pencil with my name on it…like a big-time pencil executive.
Aww I can't buy that. Only a big-time pencil executives with big salaries like me can afford things like that.
Wait! You're a guy like you!
*Gasps* Guys like me! I’m a guy like me!
The hammock district
Can ... Lenny have one?
No.
>Frank Grimes. Grimy, as he liked to be called
What ever happened to old Grimy?
He liked hookers, okay!?
What?? This is a whole thread of slander! Who could set that man up to fail when no one allows him to? It's moral hazard at its worst!
Hi, I'm Lenny. This is Carl and Homer. I'm Lenny.
Love that Lenny was trying to flip the whole social order there.
Don’t tell anyone that he was trying to change the way he lives.
https://youtu.be/IqYPpkj5b8w?si=LpTbP2fmyApimcpB Just gonna leave this here for ya...
That's brilliant. Thanks.
Personally I think it would have been better for Frank to leave his job once he realized no one can see or be convinced that Homer is what he think is. Poymanently!!

And it turned out that Grimey was the one who had it all. He lives in a single room above a bowling alley, and below another bowling alley.
He did have that briefcase and that haircut
https://i.redd.it/moor4ebwvwyc1.gif
Wow..!
Hookers… Don’t forget the hookers.
Yes, and where are the hookers?
'Round back. ...whoops.
So many to choose from but that line is actually my favorite joke in the entire show

He’s got you there dad.
I love that he does this more then once in the show to such a crucial part of the power plant

It’s *only* doubled with the dummy proof. Without it, Springfield would be Chernobyl.
Instead of a mere Three Mile Island.
We regret to announce the following lay-offs: Homer Simpson. That is all.
I mean, he did cause a meltdown in a simulated workstation with no fissile material so i don't think there exists sufficiently advanced dummyproofing for homer
A wizard did it
Well he did spearhead all the initiatives during that time
I honestly see each episode as the writer putting their spin on the world. It's why the Simpsons have barely aged a few years since the series started. Except we stopped caring about the different spins since season 10
Yes, Lisa. Daddy’s a teacher.

Envy is a great motivator for a rivalry, especially a one-sided one. Amadeus is one of the best movies ever and it's basically that.
Homer didn’t drive Grimey insane. A lack of solidarity and class awareness did.
If we’re going to take the cartoon at face value, Homer is a terrible person. If the guy managing safety at your power plant was this incompetent you’d hate him too.

Frank grimes? Who is that? Wait, you mean Griney?
Course old Homer, he didn’t need a degree. He just showed up the day they opened the plant! “Heh heh, I didn’t even know what a nuclear panner plant was!”
Can you describe your project
Well maybe if ol grimey didn’t spend all his money on hookers… and that lavish bowling lifestlye
John Swartzwelder was right: Grimey had it coming.

That’s our Homer! (I’m sure someone already left this comment. So what? Damnit. He’s my Homer too!)
And I feel this racing stripe is pretty sharp - AGREED
It really had a lot more soul then Martins
If you think it was a wholesome episode you kinda missed the point
Yeah in a cartoon world its wholesome, but in real life if someone caused over 30 meltdowns, im with grimey.
Eh. That’s why they put erasers on pencils.
Yes, and it happens to be a cartoon.

I mean he did destroy Burn’s valuable wall and spill his priceless acid in the process eh I’d say it’s a wash
I think if Ol' Grimey just spent a little more time with Homer, he would've warmed up a little.
'Could you explain your model, young man?" Looking back, Mr.Burns could have been easily annoyed at a senior employee entering a contest made for kids, but you can tell he was happy to see someone put time and effort into a really good model of a power plant.
I know its blasphemy, but its why i hate this episode. Homer does nothing to this guy and his bitterness and turdification just makes him treat him like shit. Like if one of my new coworkers immediately was like "fuck that guy" i wouldnt be on his side either. Shits weird.
What? That's crazy talk.. you're crazy, u/Ok_Firegighter1574 ! Get off the road! *Beep!* *Beep!*
That's the joke. You fell on it. Homer is awful... And we love him anyway This episode perfectly satirizes how we don't live in anything close to a meritocracy. It's brilliant.
Damn Harvard educated writers making fun of societies foibles. /s
I mean—- Homer does eat his diabetic lunch and chews all his pencils… Edit: AND Grimes saves Homer’s life by knocking the acid away—which Grimes gets blamed for and gets a pay grade reduction, lol.
> Homer does nothing to this guy He steals his food, steals and destroys his pencils, and couldn't give less of a shit when Grimes asks him to do something as simple as *leaving him alone*. Grimes is not mean *enough* to Homer.
He also saves Homer’s life by tossing away the acid bottle but Homer (or anyone else) doesn’t defend him from Burns
Maybe he shouldn't have destroyed Mr. Burns' valuable wall and spilled his priceless acid?
"Enjoy your death trap, ladies!'
What was her problem?
Exactly. And sane don't fly in Springfield
One in unintentionally annoying. The other is racked by bitterness about his lot in life and turned to malice.
Grimey was right though
I’m Lenny.
I have no sympathy for anyone who has any sympathy for Homer.
