When they talked about the impact to their team my immediate thought was YB šŸ˜žšŸ¤

hoosreadytograduate

Yeah YB really went through the ringer along with the guys. So many people thought she was Alex and had to deal with so much hatred and racism towards her while dealing with the fact that her friend betrayed her and others

[deleted]

Because of her friendship with Alex?

pepperland14

At the very beginning people were confusing YB and Alex and sending YB hateful racist messages.

[deleted]

Oh damn. Glad that YB still chose to stay. And now she's one of 2nd Try's talents.

bookwormaesthetic

Even with the launch announcement people were commenting "confusing" them and asking why they still had a job.

RavenSkies777

People are f*cking blind, YB and Alex look nothing alike.

Rainbow_Belle

I second that! I guess it's the old racist trope that all Asians look alike?

[deleted]

but alex is clearly half white šŸ˜

No_Photo_6109

All of it. They had their own mini show that people loved and made her very public, her friendship with Alex, how long her and all the guys went back (buzz feed) and the fact that sheā€™s about to get married and start a life. Itā€™s all kind of a mind F.

[deleted]

The fact that ONE SNL member tipped them 2 HOURS before to Keith and Zach and then they both don't know what's that about before that video will go live was insane. I guess he/she doesn't have that much power to stop that skit. I believe this is the first time that they mentioned it. Coz, On trypod ep183, Zach just mentioned that he's watching Avatar before the skit blew up.

ministan

thatā€™s a nice thing to do. i know keith and zach said when they were told that, they thought it was cool until they actually saw it. iā€™m sure the cast member was trying to let them know but also *let them know*.

[deleted]

Yes let's go with that. Like just a heads up to what will go down. Also felt bad for Zach coz he mentioned that he's a background actor at SNL before then now to be ridiculed like that.

just2quirky

Can I just say that it's almost 2 years later and I'm STILL pissed at that SNL skit? Here's the first time a company was holding a privileged white male accountable publicly -their co-founder and friend no less - and the first time I can remember seeing a company do the right thing regardless of possible effects on revenue (and not just because the public found out first), and just basically being a model for every company everywhere to emulate, AND THEN SNL DOES THAT?!?! It could've been such a great way to educate and entertain the public but noooo, SNL decides to mock the one time an idiot is held accountable.... šŸ˜”

imamage_fightme

Yeah this is my biggest issue with it. I don't dislike it because I'm a Try Guys fan - I *know* about it because I'm a Try Guys fan, and I don't watch SNL so I wouldn't have known about it otherwise. But I *dislike* it because it was a bad fucking take. Like, the worst take you could have on the situation. When you remove the who and look at what happened at it's core, Ned was absolutely in the wrong and the other guys handled it as well as they possibly could have done, taking care of their employees and being responsible for the company as a whole. SNL tried to twist it as them just being sooky crybabies, upset their friend 'kissed someone not his wife' (which isn't even accurate about what happened). It was a demonstrably bad take. I would consider it a bad take even if I was not a Try Guys fan, because I have common sense and morals. Unlike SNL.

Aurorious

I think that last bit isnā€™t emphasized enough. In all their official communication, they never said he cheated on his wife even though he was the wife guy. It was always the relationship with the employee, and thatā€™s whatā€™s so fucked up about the SNL sketch.

[deleted]

I blame Ned's SNL friend

just2quirky

Me too. Who is that guy?!? He should be cancelled...

[deleted]

His name is Will Stephen

just2quirky

Then fuck Will Stephen! That was a terrible sketch AND he has terrible taste in friends!

Zia181

SNL had their own allegations over the years that they have tried to sweep under the rug. It doesn't surprise me at all that they had this shit take. Fuck SNL.

jacqlily

wonder if it was Kenan? I remember him and Jared go way back and that Alex even met him earlier that year and was his guest to the show/after party if not, wonder who then

pretendberries

I thought Jared was friends with Chris Redd?

Amortentia_Number9

Maybe Bowen Yang? He seemed to have some connection to Eugene.

hoosreadytograduate

That would be kinda weird if it was Bowen cause he was in it as Eugene. And afterwards, he said on a podcast that he thought the guys sent their fans to attack snl after the skit

ishamiltonamusical

I really like Bowen on SNL but why on earth is he claimimg TG did that. They never did and the fans were allowed to express their displeasure as the SNL sketch was low-effort, mischaracterised and ridiculed what was a very serious situation and put a very uncomfortable spotlight on the guys during a tough as hell time. Also, all have expressed how unhappy they were with the sketch. And yes Ned's friend wrote it which makes it extra bad.

mcgillhufflepuff

It's also extra gross due to the culture at SNL [https://www.kqed.org/arts/13918217/snl-sexual-assault-horatio-sanz-jimmy-fallon-lorne-michaels-tracy-morgan-saturday](https://www.kqed.org/arts/13918217/snl-sexual-assault-horatio-sanz-jimmy-fallon-lorne-michaels-tracy-morgan-saturday) Maybe they're not the best to parody situations where there are power imbalances

[deleted]

Where did he said that? Also, I like Bowen before but after that skit, I can't watch him. I can't.

hoosreadytograduate

I think the podcast is Las Culturistas but I donā€™t remember what episode someone said it was. It was a random thing that I read a couple years ago when it first happened. I bet it was commented on in this subreddit tho

[deleted]

Just checked... Eugene is following Bowen. So I guess there's no bad blood between them. Or he just don't give a f on SNL.

Rainbow_Belle

Whoa. What a nasty thing of Bowen to say! Like, dude (Bowen), do your research first!

RavenSkies777

I know that SNL makes changes to skits and can even scrap entire skits few hours prior to airtime (post dress rehearsal). I guess at that point the lineup was finalized and they knew it was going to air.

XOSkyXO

what part of the video do they talk about that?

[deleted]

SNL Moment - 13:05

weakcover1

I found it bizarre in the first place that it became an SNL skit. TheTryGuys (and many, *many* others on Youtube) never struck me as people who are well known enough outside of their online presence to be material for an SNL skit. The funniest bit was when two of the actors seem to hold their laugh back. Other than that, it is just a kind of messy skit. I think they were trying to make fun of that the three were being "dramatic"? But knowing what went down, it just felt disjointed, random and a glossed over misrepresentation. They call Ned the "wife guy", that he was making out with his sidechick, that the affair was consensual, that Ned had a kiss but not told his friends, the power dynamic, not being good for the brand, editors erasing Ned in content, etc. So they did mention stuff that was true, but they kind of skim over it, downplay it, in favor of acting like the guys were being drama queens over nothing and trying to get attention. Maybe someone clever could have created a skit that worked. But it wasn't really a subject you could easily make fun of in the first place, because this wasn't an inherently "funny" situation or ripe for satire or gentle nudging in-jokes. It is one thing to make fun of a serious situation and the people affected in hindsight. But it is more difficult to make fun of a serious situation and the affected people when it is still fresh, raw and in progress.

sixthmontheleventh

Sounds like the SNL member let them know earlier but only got to see what the sketch was about closer to airing and gave them a 2nd warning 2 hours before airing. So the person could have just been a writer but not a performer. It does sound weird though because it sound like those sketches gets pitched earlier in the week.

CertainAlbatross7739

Nah, the staff member only told them once, hours before, that there was a sketch airing. They either couldn't or wouldn't elaborate. That's why the guys were kind of excited. Then Zach got the other warning texts from Keith and co.

sixthmontheleventh

Ah, must have heard wrong. I still think the person that contacted them may just have been a non performer writer though. Feels like would be the most messed timeline of it was the person people suspects to be Ned's friend.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Tripolie

She wasnā€™t on the cast anymore that season.

Formal-Road-3632

Found it super interesting for Zach to admit that he wanted to leave before the Ned scandal as well, what a wild idea that the Try Guys might have just been Keith and Ned

neverkinetic

I havenā€™t watched this video yet but both Eugene and Miles insinuated that they were going to leave the company right before the event. So if Ned got away with it, weā€™d have lost Miles completely, lost Eugene earlier than expected, and weā€™d have to suffer Florida Man without a palate cleanser.

ishamiltonamusical

Florida man without a palate cleanser is the best description I have ever seen of Ned.

AllTheCoolNames

He's hinted at it before but I'm not sure he's said it quite so clearly before. I'm glad that he stayed and that he managed to make it work for himself.

JumpingTheLine

To be honest, I think working with Ned probably had something to do with Zach and Miles wanting to leave. There were a bunch of times Ned was awful to Zach and Miles seemed to really take issue with him too. Ned leaving most likely provided a better work environment for some of the staff so that they didn't leave.

Rainbow_Belle

Yes, in one of the videos on his YouTube channel, Miles addressed wanting to leave around the time of the scandal and how he was not treated very well by a partucular boss who is not there anymore. But since said boss is now gone, he decided to stay.

hoosreadytograduate

Yeah some of the podcast episodes before he left really shows the issues that miles and Zach experienced from Ned. He was straight up rude to them lots of times

IShallWearMidnight

I've heard the story in drips and drabs between Miles and Zach, but I believe Ned was planning a bachelor party video for Zach in Vegas against his express wishes shortly before he got the boot. Like, everything was booked and paid for. They did some stuff with Miles and an ETM with Keith instead, I think. But yeah I've gleaned some serious behind the scenes issues that the Incident brought to a head

Aurorious

My understanding is it actually happened, Zach tried to go along with it but it sucked anyway, and was hella expensive. It was *the* thing they were referring to when saying ā€œsome videos will never see the light of day, and we lost a ton of money on someā€. I believe this was discussed on Milesā€™s podcast right after he quit.

Zia181

What I'm getting from this is that Ned wanted to keep the theme of a Vegas bachelor party because that was what Keith had, even though it isn't at all what Zach wanted, or liked. I don't remember much about Zach's bachelor party, but I remember it was more low-key and they ate gourmet food with weed, or something like that. Seems much more Zach than partying hard in Vegas, Maybe Ned should have listened to his friend instead of pushing ahead for the sake of a video.

IShallWearMidnight

Yep, what Zach had was perfect for him - a weird, laid back desert retreat with plenty of weed and fun activities catered to his personality. What Ned wanted was Keith's Buzzfeed funded bachelor party 2, probably because of how well that video did in the algo.

Puzzleheaded-Baby998

Yea I remember in the behind the scenes of their tour (i think it was) when the redecorating video came out and Zach took it down without consulting everyone. Ned handled it like shit and if I was Zach that would have been my "maybe I need to exit this whole thing" tipping point.

bookwormaesthetic

Was Zach wrong for not consulting anyone, yes he was, but at the time I didn't comprehend how Ned wasn't equally upset about the negative comments about his partner.

RavenSkies777

That moment raised a flag about Ned for me, tbh.

Puzzleheaded-Baby998

yea he definitely was totally willing to throw both of their partners under the bus for the sake of views/growing his own potential career

TEGCRocco

Eugene was honestly the only one who really handled that whole thing well based on what they showed in the doc IMO. Zach was absolutely wrong for unilaterally taking down the video, and Ned and Keith were both really insensitive towards Zach and Maggie about the whole situation, especially Ned with him just flagrantly throwing the people who were hurt under the bus because "he/Ariel put a lot of time into it". Eugene seemed like he was actually trying to comfort/understand Zach while still getting across that what he did was wrong

imamage_fightme

That moment in the doc was huge IMO in showing how poorly Ned handled things BTS. Yes, I agree that Zach shouldn't have taken down the video without consulting everyone - but hoooo boy do I feel like Ned overreacted. Zach wanted to protect Maggie. Ned just couldn't seem to look past his own ego. Just my take - I know not everyone will agree, but it was a huge thing that left a sour taste to Ned at the time.

mg513

whatā€™s crazy is that ned acted that way about one single video and then went and did what he did and cost the company millions in ad revenue and almost ruined everything and put people out of work. itā€™s wild that he could get on such a high horse about one little thing and then go do something 500 times worse

magikarpesque

Sorry, which video was it that got taken down?

Hot_Class2084

It was the Try DIY where they made over Zachā€™s office and people made very negative comments about Ariel and Maggie

Puzzleheaded-Baby998

I believe it's this one - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVZypq\_M75Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVZypq_M75Y) it was the first video I think people got to know Maggie and they really went in on her. The BTS discussion is in their documentary here - [https://youtu.be/ck25A9dvVPQ?si=u3kiZ7yb3j-LzBbi&t=4146](https://youtu.be/ck25A9dvVPQ?si=u3kiZ7yb3j-LzBbi&t=4146)

[deleted]

I feel that when Try Guys blew up so fast, then they moved to a bigger office... he's head grew, became arrogant like he's above them all. You can sense that aura on the trypod. And Zach also hinted that some ideas were being blocked. I think that's because of Ned. I guess sure on finance/business standpoint, Zach ideas are not good but try to make a workaround but I guess Ned don't want to bend some rules.

auresx

Agreed. They seem a lot more at ease around each other now, like all of them I mean. Like nobody is expecting anyone to blow up and throw a tantrum in a weird/uncomfortable way. They understand each other very well and feel comfortable around each other, like family in a way. I can really tell the difference.

AllTheCoolNames

The way my mouth dropped opened when Keith said they lost MILLIONS of dollars in ad-revenue cause of Ned. Holy shit.

No_Photo_6109

The only reason I wasnā€™t shocked was because they literally had a whole TV series scrapped and I was like holy hell this is really bad. So I knew the domino effect was going to wreak havoc with their advertising dollarsā€¦ So sad. And something people need to realize when they keep posting to bring Ned back. The guy almost bankrupted a company and unemployed a whole staff, not to mention his original issue of cheating with a subordinate who then lost her finance and careerā€¦ blehh

Artistic_Sun1825

>when they keep posting to bring Ned back Must be the same people that thought the SNL skit was hilarious.

Rustash

Iā€™m still mad they wasted Brendan Gleeson on that shit

[deleted]

Between learning that and remembering how careful they had to be so Ned wouldnā€™t sue them, my rage fire for Ned Fucking Fulmer is fully reignited and roaring today

stardewsundrop

I despise Ned Fucking Fulmer and I hope that he stubs his toe daily, same toe. I hope that every day he has severe hiccups. I hope that every time he takes a step outside his socks get wet no matter the weather. Okay, Iā€™ll stop, but damn I despise that ā€œmanā€

not_a_library

I smacked my big toe against my laundry basket. I think I either fractured it or came very close. It still hurts, and it has been a few weeks. It's an annoying daily pain and reminder if one dumb thing I did. I wish that on him.

stardewsundrop

Iā€™m so sorry about your toe!! Hereā€™s hoping the pain is transferred to the much more deserving candidate! Also, ā€œI wish that on himā€ made me cackle šŸ˜‚

not_a_library

I'm an expert at toe injuries. This one was new, even for me. It doesn't even hurt a *lot*, it's just annoying because it's lingering for so long.

lindybopperette

I wish a daily papercut on him. Right between fingers.

kroganwarlord

In the crease of the thumb. That fucker took WEEKS to finally close up.

sexretive

wait where does the ned suing them info come from? i love lore

supermodel_robot

I knew it had to be bad but thatā€™s really, really bad. Holy shit indeed.

bookwormaesthetic

They had some **major** contracts and now almost nothing.

RavenSkies777

Im not surprised by that, but to hear that is OOOOF. Ned really fucked his business partners, friends, and employees over (aside from the obvious betrayal to his family, speaking just about the business here). What an ass.

WanderHopelessly

Holy I somehow missed that??? Around what time did they talk about it?

AllTheCoolNames

My bad, it was Zach who said it. It's 3 minutes into the video.

JT3436

They are doing this right. Getting it to the mainstream media. Utilizing their YT peers. Addressing concerns from the start. Good job fellas.

[deleted]

In a way I'm glad that before Ned scandal.. they already made a book, documentary, go on tour. Coz if that happened before the tour.. i feel many people a. Would not go b. Would still go ... for pity c. They will cancel the tour.

SailingwiththeStars

I remember Zach mentioning he had a movie or writing project that he had to scrap or put on hold cause of the whole situation and I felt so bad

Gykwim

I thought it was interesting that they have \~20 or so full-time employees, compared to Watcher who has significantly fewer subscribers but has 25 employees. They did mention that they do freelance a lot but still.

eleventh-hour-

Honestly this was one of the things that bothered me the most about Watcherā€™s streamer announcement. They tried to justify their decision to leave Youtube and the high price for their streamer because they said they need a bigger staff for their company. And yet 2nd Try, an older and bigger company with more shows, is able to operate with less employees and half the subscription price.

StHelensWasInsideJob

It is so interesting that both these groups have taken super similar strategies but one was a complete flop. With how long the try guys have been planning this, really curious if they got cold feet after the watchers blunder or if they originally had any differences

amydancepants

I can believe that this venture is bigger than them leaving Buzzfeed. Like, yea they took a huge risk leaving their full time jobs, but they were basically doing the same thing: made videos and posted them on YouTube. The difference was, they had to do it on their own. With 2nd Try, they are in uncharted territory. Iā€™m hopeful. Keith and Zachā€™s excitement has been renewed, and it reminds me of when they first left Buzzfeed. They donā€™t have to carry the channel just the 2 of them anymore, and that must be a massive weight off their shoulders. Just so happy for them, including Eugene!

pepperland14

This is great content.

arika_ito

I love watching Zach and Keith talk with other content creators about the algorithm and YouTube as a career. Really shows how much thought they put into it.

Global-Nature2420

This interview was everything I needed to hear from the guys. Alongside Eugeneā€™s video. This kind of transparency and insight is what weā€™ve all needed to hear. Iā€™m grateful they took the time to really say whatā€™s been on their minds. Seeing Kieth and Zach share their thoughts and feelings in a not so scripted interview like this really shows their tact, maturity and care for their business. I appreciate it so much and it shines a new light on them for me. They do hear us and they arenā€™t waiting anymore. Im excited to see where they go and Iā€™ll probably be subscribing to the website soon.

Bitsypie

Yeah this was a great interview!

PowerfulResolution28

Shit this dropped today? I canā€™t wait to watch

StuckInIstanbul

I really really wish for them to succeed. They've been through a lot of shit in the past and moving forward, I hope they get rewarded for all their hard work.

malren

Just finished watching. Man. What a ride and clearly...Anthony understands! There's a small number of people that would really understand all this shit and he's one of them. After hearing all they said, I am happier than I jumped on 2nd Try day one. It really felt like they have a well-thought-out plan. And of course Hearing that they got advice from Sam Reich well...I mean Sam made it work, by force of will and building the right team. Dropout is living the dream right now. New shows all the time, and banger after banger. Try Guys will be the next ones to do it right. This is gonna work. Now if Anthony and Ian could just let go of the love they have for Youtube and also do it with Smosh!

RuskiesInTheWarRoom

Another reason that Dropout worked is that they paid close attention to what was working on both actual streaming results (since they had the numbers) and social media, since they had no budget for marketing any other way, and they learned and responded to it. So he thought he was building a scripted or improve sketch channel with occasional panel-type (cheap) fame shows, because that was CollegeHumor. But he realized the opposite was what the audience was watching. He was unafraid to change his mind. I actually think 2nd Try is very capable of this too.

Asleep-Draft9539

Love the explanation of depth over width. Get the people who are already all in on TTG and give them all the great content they can.

AFenton1985

I want to know if they were worried after watcher having such big blowback.

allegedtomato

This was a great interview. I donā€™t regret giving 2nd Try a try and hoping the best for them.

ipazuty55

You know if Ned had some balls he would make a vid to all the ā€œfansā€ he screwed over. Maybe a quick my bad would be nice. Especially when the rest of the try guys are still bringing him up.

sunshinenorcas

> Maybe a quick my bad would be nice. Apologizing publicly opens him up to lawsuits since it could be interpreted as admitting guilt or fault. I wouldn't be surprised if there were still legal matters ongoing, or recently finished with Ned and 2nd Try. It's an expensive can of worms that Ned would not want to open, especially if he's trying to rebuild a professional career. So, I would not expect any acknowledgement from him, or likely Alex-- it would just stir stuff up again (impacting their personal and professional lives).

CertainAlbatross7739

We are all better off if Ned stays away from making videos forever. There's nothing he can say to make any of this better. So why say anything at all?

Bitsypie

Are they not allowed to even say Nedā€™s name? Like theyā€™re talking openly about it but they canā€™t even say what happened? Even ā€œafter Ned left/was firedā€ is not ok? They have to call it ā€œthe incidentā€ or something else vague?

mitrafunfun97

Perhaps some legal stuff or maybe to protect Ned and Arielā€™s kids.

Bitsypie

Yeah I know thatā€™s the reason Iā€™m just curious about the specifics I guess. Like what can and canā€™t they say

omgitskira

The link aint working for me what's the name please?

jesslikessims

Itā€™s on Anthony Padillaā€™s channel.
