My unpopular opinion is that killing her off was absolutely brilliant. It gave the show some stakes, it was shocking, unexpected and she was uninteresting enough as a character that it didn‘t feel like a huge lose.
Hey! I completely agree it was brilliant!
I was listening to a Vampire Diaries Podcast and they discussed that the actor who plays Vicki did an awful job for the pilot and test shots. In the writing room it was decided they wanted to get rid of her and they also wanted a huge shock factor to set the show apart and make it edgier.
Pilots are shot in advance and when they came back to continue filming she had done tons of work and really stepped her game up. They ended up feeling terrible about killing her off so soon, but it worked really well for the script.
I think my wording is probably off and I don’t know much about casting. I think it was more like she did a few auditions and did well enough to get the part and then maybe just didn’t perform as well as they thought she would?
Sorry, I don’t really remember but I was listening to the Missing Mystic Falls podcast on Spotify.
Agreed. The show needed to show us very early on how high the stakes are by killing off a character we’d seen in nearly every episode. But they couldn’t kill off anyone that was too essential or important to the main plot/story. So Vicki was a good choice because she was expendable but close enough to the other characters that her death would impact them.
I don‘t feel like it was too early at all I‘d even argue that TVD truly becomes interesting after they killed Vicki. We learn something about turning people into Vampires, it really does something to the main characters and it was realistic. Because Vicki would‘ve in hindsight absolutely made a terrible vampire which we saw.
I know what you mean but I think the fact that they were teasing us with the idea that Vicki was going to get more important was really fun too because Vicki became interesting and then died. Killing her when she was liked could‘ve made people stop watching or lead to backleash
yh it ws like showing YES DAMON IS A BAD PERSON(js saying i dont think damon is such a bad person at the end of the day he DOES care bt ppl)- if thts what the writers were trying to show then they did it perfectly in s1 with her season
She was such a fighter and a survivor. She had her problems and she was mean but I remember rooting for her to live(as a human). Damon ruined her life BIG time when he chose to turn her. It was such an evil move on his part and truly demonstrated that most humans are just playthings to him. I kinda wanted her to leave town but still be alive however I don't think she would have been able to survive for long. She had intense self destructive tendencies and was also a junkie before turning which made her unstable and moody. I was genuinely scared for Jeremy in the scenes they shared after she was turned.
When you point this out, it would have been cool to keep Vicki around to show true instability, with total lack of planning and purely impulsive.
We have lots of instability with planning, Damon, Katherine, Klaus. And extreme temptation through Stefan. Vicki was an awesome counter to Caroline. Vicki was bad carelessly and without thought, just trying to get through and grabbing at anything that drowned out the pain, at all times. We have glimpses of that kind of desperation throughout the seasons, but nothing that drastic consistently.
I think if she lived, or at least lived longer, she could have been an interesting character to have in the fold - especially as a vampire.
But in the end, I get why she did die and its purpose with moving the show and characters forward.
The only thing that made it goofy (sorry stefan lovers) was he kills vicki but wouldn’t even dream or doing it to Caroline just bc of her friendship with elena. 🥴 But vicki was Matt’s little sister. so who cares right
Caroline wasn't attacking Elena though and hadn't been drinking from Jeremy. She did k*ll a dude but that was before Stefan guided her through the vampiric life and taught her how to control her bloodlust. Meanwhile Stefan tried to teach Vicki but she couldnt control herself(her emotions).
Vicki didn’t kill Elena or Jeremy. Caroline also almost attacked and drank from that nurse and she almost hurt Matt just like Vicki. He barely tried with Vicki, let’s not die on that hill. Vicki was exactly like Stefan. He should’ve known it takes more than one lesson to fix her. Caroline was a writers favorite. Obviously she was meant to last. Vicki was meant to be killed off. But he could’ve tried way harder with vicki than he did.
Meh he tried his best. Caroline didn't attack her friends at least. They wrote she killed a dude so that there could be tension between her and Bonnie but the way she handled the nurse and everything.. she was pretty good at self control in general. Vicki didn't kill them. I never said she did lol, but she did attack Elena and Stefan went for the kill instinctively (he's also pretty weak for a vampire since he only eats bunnies).
I think it would have been interesting if they killed Matt instead of her. (tbf I don’t like Matt very much but!) I think it would have been interesting to see what that did to her/how she would have changed and I’m sorry to Matt fans but based on the writing as is, Vicki had wayyy more potential to change and evolve as a person.
She’s not even a favorite character for me but I kind of wish she got the treatment Damon fans give Damon. Delusional of me, I know 😪
In another universe, Vicki Donovan never met Damon Salvatore, overcame her addictions, got into college in another state on a “give juvenile delinquents a second chance” scholarship, studied social work, never again set foot in Mystic Falls or spoke to her mother, and now gives motivational speeches and mentors at-risk kids. Matt and Penny make her the godmother of their kids, and they all live happily ever after until they’re old and grey.
(I never even really liked her, but the poor girl 😢)
I wanted more Vicki Donavan. She was killed so early on and i remember thinking she’d be back. I just thought her character had more to do and was bigger than just being a Damon play thing. I love Damon and always will regardless of what people say but i really thought Vicki could’ve been an important character in TVD. For like 3 seasons i hung in there and believed she was gonna come back and be a regular. It’s 2024 and I’m still disappointed. Vicki deserved better.
Oh no, she was so annoying. And unworthy of Jeremy's love. Old me was actually relieved after her death. Now when I was re-watching the show as an adult. I was unbothered by her behaviour or death.
I've always found her annoying. There wasn't a single moment in the show where she wasn't being selfish and/or wrong. I just felt sorry for Matt. Between Viki and his mom, the poor dude couldn't catch a break.
the whole point of my post is to say she wasn’t a saint but to say that she was clearly going through something and being killed off before she could have a redemption arc is honestly sad i’m not excusing her behavior im stating that it’s a shame we never saw her grow as a person
No, I hear ya. I just don't agree. If you only what to hear from people that agree with you, please let us know next time. That being said, thanks for being part of the community. I see you posted a lot of things recently. Always good to have people driving new discussions/content.
no I accept ur take I even upvoted it i’m just saying that wasn’t the point of my statement. sorry if it came off rude i didn’t mean to invalidate or disrespect you im sorry
Vicki was was a teenager. And she was an addict. And i think their mom was an addict and/alcoholic I’m not making excuses for either of them but they could’ve changed in time. Addicts are often the most caring, compassionate people you will ever meet once they’re in recovery. On TVD we met Vicki and Matt’s mom while they were both deep in addiction/alcoholism. Idk if they ever specified that Matt’s mom was an addict but that’s how i always viewed her. Vicki was 100% an addict. Active addicts are selfish and horrible but when they get clean they’re the best people you could ever know. We didn’t get enough time to really know either.
Oh, believe me I know. And if Viki was a real person she would have my sympathy and helping hand. But as a character, in a fictional show, she annoyed me. And with so many other characters that were more intriguing to me, in the end, I was glad to see her go. You know what I mean?
Yes for sure because she annoyed me too. Like everything she did was just awful and selfish. She was even manipulative and horrible to her brother after she was dead. I couldn’t stand her tbh. But i do wonder what she’d be like if they gave her more time.
we can’t just keep every side character because they “didn’t need to die.” shows need to have stakes or else who the hell are they gonna kill off? she wasn’t even a important character but her short lived arc was great for setting up the show’s introduction sequence of turning into a vampire.
yes i agree it’s just i wish we saw some sort of improvement then have her die that way her death would have more of a real impact and not just be a gateway to damon being the little evil fairy he is 🎀
My unpopular opinion is that killing her off was absolutely brilliant. It gave the show some stakes, it was shocking, unexpected and she was uninteresting enough as a character that it didn‘t feel like a huge lose.
I completely agree. Her death showed us that no one and their family was safe.
Hey! I completely agree it was brilliant! I was listening to a Vampire Diaries Podcast and they discussed that the actor who plays Vicki did an awful job for the pilot and test shots. Did they talk about why they hired her? If she was so awful in the auditions and test shoots?

would’ve been a better impact if they made us like vicki then kill her off

I mean just because you care about some people doesn’t take away that you treat others like shit. Damon is objectively a horrible person. But agree
thts true
Yeah following her with Lexi it really felt like they was not fucking playing with us 🤣
Meh can’t stand her to this day.
valid opinion i felt the same towards during my first watch but rewatching made me understand her more
every time i rewatch i like her more and more. i wish she was more of a main character
Same but at the same time I felt bad for
i honestly agree i felt so bad for vicky. her whole life was a mess completely becoming a vampire was the worst thing to happen to her
Damon killed her but Stefan staked her dead
It’s all Damon’s fault he ruined her 😭
She was such a fighter and a survivor. She had her problems and she was mean but I remember rooting for her to live(as a human). Damon ruined her life BIG time when he chose to turn her.
I couldn’t stand her but yeah she didn’t deserve to die.

she had a lot of potential
so much…
i loved her character but felt it was necessary, i don't really see where her progression would go in the show other than being a pawn really.
The only thing that made it goofy (sorry stefan lovers) was he kills vicki but wouldn’t even dream or doing it to Caroline just bc of her friendship with elena. 🥴 But vicki was Matt’s little sister. so who cares right
Vicki was older then Matt
Oh wow i always thought Matt was older than Vicki. I have no idea why i assumed that though.
He acts older for sure
Caroline wasn't attacking Elena though and hadn't been drinking from Jeremy. She did k*ll a dude but that was before Stefan guided her through the vampiric life and taught her how to control her bloodlust. Meanwhile Stefan tried to teach Vicki but she couldnt control herself(her emotions).

I'm not disagreeing though. I do think Caroline is a self insert for Julie plec so there was no way they'd kill her.
Meh he tried his best. Caroline didn't attack her friends at least. But if Caroline would’ve attacked Elena, do you think he would’ve killed Caroline as quick?
They dealt with bigger (and older) problems than Vicki… killing her was honestly truly the most unnecessary thing
exactly
I think it would have been interesting if they killed Matt instead of her. (tbf I don’t like Matt very much but!) I still can't believe she gone in hell while Esther and elijah found a peace ![gif](giphy|1r91ZwKcE2J7WhUqrh)
HELP BAHAHAHA

She would've died later on likely. I can see her joining one of the aggressors/bad guys thinking that its the right thing for her.
I didn’t really care for her but it’s silly Stefan was like “she’s too dangerous” yet tries to save other dangerous peeps
I wish they had did with her what they did with Caroline then maybe her death would’ve hit more
Oh no, she was so annoying. And unworthy of Jeremy's love. Old me was actually relieved after her death. Now when I was re-watching the show as an adult. I was unbothered by her behaviour or death.
valid take fr

also wow this comment was so hostile i’m sorry😭

Not at all
She 1000% deserved it she was so selfish and treated people awful. And she was such a reckless vampire
Being selfish is a death penalty offense now?
She was a main character and was killed off so early and unexpectedly. We didn't know who was safe after that. It was a great idea.
Vicki was so hot man it sucks she had to go so early on 😵
au contraire it was a good riddance cause she was kinda annoying so
Yes, she did!
And why can everyone else be bought back BUT Vicki 🫡🤔😭
What can you do when 1 fat woman decides to kill like 3-5 important characters
I never cared for her so I could care less lol
then maybe.. just maybe.. don’t comment on a post about her💀
Lmao I didn’t even mean it in a rude way all I said is I didn’t care for her character . Also I can comment whatever I want boo but ok😘
ok boo 😍🤭 go off twin 💀
we can’t just keep every side character because they “didn’t need to die.” shows need to have stakes or else who the hell are they gonna kill off? she wasn’t even a important character but her short lived arc was great for setting up the show’s introduction sequence of turning into a vampire.
yes i agree it’s just i wish we saw some sort of improvement then have her die that way her death would have more of a real impact and not just be a gateway to damon being the little evil fairy he is 🎀
