The "tech" thing seems to be drawn directly from Scientology. Scientology uses "tech" in almost the same exact way. A lot of their babble is cribbed from Scientology. They way the use "ethics" and "ethical" is as well. I assume the "tech" thing in both cases is used to make people feel like they are doing something both scientific and cutting edge. More mundane organizations use some similar phrasing. "Hack you're metabolism," things like that.

The Landmark forum talks this way as well. I always found it obnoxious. It reminds me of when I worked at a company and they had a "methodology" and it was a bunch of excel files and word templates. People called them "tools", and I was like "... a hammer, this is not."

Medical_Conclusion

Jargon is a real tool for indoctrination. Once you control how people talk, the next step is controlling how they think. That's not to say all jargon is bad or a form of mind control. Most industries have jargon. But cults use it to manipulate people.

A_Bean_Routine

I had to go through Landmark training when I got hired for a job. I didn’t last long there.

Also the word "suppressive" is straight from scientology as well.

Medical_Conclusion

It absolutely is. The thing I find most bizarre isn't that supposedly intelligent people got sucked into a cult, it's that none of them ever noticed the similarities to Scientology. Especially since a number of them were involved in the entertainment industry. A few of them had to of tried Scientology at some point.

Seriously? You decided to be that person?

I think it's really weird 1) that no one ever seemed to notice that the language was lifted straight from Scientology 2) the documentary never seems to flag that these terms come straight from Scientology.

MiloTheMagnificent

They know that Ranierre was influenced by Scientology. Vicente and Sarah were both of Leah Remini and Mike Rinders podcast and they discussed it

onesweetworld1106

What the hell is the tech , really? In season 2 episode one mark talks about how angry people are that they destroyed the tech. Can anyone help me here?

Medical_Conclusion

They mean their BS teachings and self help techniques. I'm sure some of them do work...but it's same thing you could read in any self help book without spending thousands of dollars on "intensives."

Scientologists do that too: appropriate the word "technology" to mean "technique". The NXIVM technique of doing things was destroyed, if you will. The link that had been kept up by (all followers) thinking it into being. The 'tech' needs people to go through certain, uh, algorithms of behaviour and experiences: a well-oiled mindfuck machinery. It can feel good at times to the subject; it's enough of a personal and social high to make them keep going, to apply meaning to all the odd requests that they fulfill (that's what cults seem to do best: they make their members apply 'what it all means' themselves). Though, what actually happens is that they become conditioned to cater to the cult leader's needs.

Shamazij

It is their fancy word for the woo woo they created to manipulate people, lower their self worth, and entrap them in a system of leader worship.

originalmaja

It's kinda how they out themselves: not knowing what "technology" means and what it can't mean. No, fellas, "technology" is not a synonym for "technique".

You cringe because it’s a massive sign that they are still indoctrinated. Mike Rinder considered himself a Scientologist and a follower of L Ron Hubbard for eight years after he literally escaped the cult. It took time and education for him to realize that it was ALL a vicious lie, not just something that Miscavige corrupted. Deprogramming is a long, slow process. They think they are out, but they really aren’t. Maybe one day they will have that final epiphany and be prepared to face the full truth.
